Learning to Dock Start a Hydrofoil

Today I learned to dock start my Ono Swift 175 setup. I've only been able to dock start a wing in the 1800 sq cm range prior to this. Hopefully what I learned can help you learn to dock start as well. Instagram: Just_the_wingtips
Hydrofoil Surfing | Unifoil Vyper 150

Got a couple clips riding the Unifoil Vyper 150 before the GoPro died. First impressions are positive. Really fast, carves hard, and pumps well! Setup needs a bit of tuning for the feel I like. The best attribute of this wing is being able to push it as hard as possible in the pocket without it sliding out on you. Instagram: Just_the_wingtips
Hydrofoil Surfing the Cabrinha H-800
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
First impressions of the Cabrinha H-800. This wing is fast and responsive. I found that it really wanted to lift through turns and I struggled to keep it down despite its small size. Perhaps this could be fixed with a foil parts tail adapter, which would allow you to shim the tail. Little sketchy in the foam for my liking but that's with most HA wings of this size. Overall set up is super flexy...

do you use a tail shim?
I believe for this setup it is a .5 shim thick end forward. Lose a lot of pump but turns well
@@justthewingtips a negative shim?
@@rmoisio yes I believe negative. A bottom mounted tail with thick end of shim forward raising the trailing edge of the tail.
I noticed you were using a small blade Chinook. Is this your regular DWSUPF paddle or did you borrow it? The small blade didn't seem to affect your pop up and probably allowed for a faster cadence. Great that you kept you edit short (who has time to watch 20 minutes of DWing!)
I’m using the 96 stroke. I bought because it’s cheap, I don’t have to take care of it and it works really well. I tried it compared to the code paddle and Ono Ava 105 and it’s about in between those two on the size. So cadence to power ratio was perfect for me
Epic bro
So which one you prefer , bump surfing or surf foiling in the ocean ?
I’d take down wind bumps in conditions like this with a smaller sup. The bumps are so rippable and there’s nothing like being locked in on a down wind
The shop advertises Surf/Prone Foil lesson in Seal Beach. I’m in Santa Cruz but no surf foil lesson given, I go to LB/Lakewood often and interested..do you give lesson? Thanks..
Hey! Reach out to Josh at the foil shop and he’ll give you the run down on booking a lesson. The shop number is (562) 685-1884.
Right on Quinn!
Why haven't we gotten you sponsored yet?
910?
I think it was a 910 with the red fuse.
Kujira!
This is awesome. Great to see someone else's progression. :)
How do you think this compares to to new Lift 180 X that is coming out?
No idea but I’m guessing a lot better. Tried the 150x for a wave and that already blows the 170 away. Low end on the 170 is the only thing it has going for it compared to the 150x
Q you are killing bro!! sick edit, sketch fall at the end... keep'em coming🦅
Try the 178 tail bro it will get even better!
Ooooof meant to say I was riding the 178 tail. The 220 is meant for shotgunning beers! 220 should never belong on a foil haha
Hey what's the difference between the 178 and the 220? I'm considering buying a used set and has the 220 tail and it's actually a 1210 front wing on a 75 cm mast. I'm going to be riding behind the boat and I'd like to ride the waves and pump around a little bit if possible. Maybe even pop out of the water with some straps! I'm 175 lb. Anything you can tell me would be so helpful 🙌
Do you need the wind ? In would like to try that on the Danube
You need wind or waves to surf or downwind foil. But, there are many people that run off docks and use them in flat water.
Sick! Perfect Murlocs chune
Oh shit!
are you happy with your 980 ? just bought one to complete my quiver
I’ve done my best foiling on the 980. I’ve tried a lot of foils and it’s been the closest to surfing for me. It’s slower and doesn’t pump as well as the newer foils coming out but I think it paces better with the waves I foil for maximum shredding
Rear wing?
The 178 kujira tail
weight?
I’m about 195lbs (~88.5 kilos)
So sick dude! What mast and tail Is this with?
Thanks 🤙 it’s the 72cm and fast tail from foil parts
Kikagaku Moyo 👍
did you try dockstarting on the 230?
No. But I’d imagine it would be the ultimate dock start wing. 200 beach starts easy
Hi. I’m currently winging with the Lift HA 120 and glide 32 tail. Looking at extending my quiver for light wind winging. 8 knots or so. What do you think about adding the Lift HA 170 to my quiver? 180 lbs. solid intermediate level winger. Thanks.
I’d say trying to find a used 170 or 200 HA would be the call. Haven’t winged the lift gear but I think those are the only light wind options
really smashing! which tailwing-178 or any custom one are you using?
I’m riding the 178. I’ve tried a kd tail and a couple other customs with the Takuma but in my opinion the 178 pairs best with the Takuma gear
Hey, can I ask how much you weigh?
Around 82 kg
@@castawaymonkey ok thanks, so then you still are able to pump foil on the 980? That's awesome. I heard that this foil would be to small for that.
@@louisbanenspumps great for how well it surfs. I’ve even down winded with the 980 a couple times.
@@justthewingtips Great!
Great video! Really appreciate your input and tips🤙. I am a similar weight to you and have been struggling with prone on my 1550v2 no worries if I’m on an SUP it occurred to me after your video that I may have too much surface area. Do you suggest I go 1250/925 or switch to another brand?” Since down winding is my ultimate goal too.
No need to switch brands. 1550 will get you down winding no problem. But if you are going to go all in with Downwind eventually you'd probably want the 1125 or put in the time to learn to read bumps with the 1550 and go for the 925. Also mess with the tail shims and you could probably reduce some of the lift from the 1550.
Hi, if you campare takuma 1095 to the LIFT 170 HIGH ASPECT, wich one is the best for you ? thanks
In my opinion, the kujira 1095 is better in every way.
Yo im a local. Meet up?
I used to weigh 85 in my 20 s. Now 98 Any chance of me doing the same...
Not exactly hard
Give us some context here mate, what is the spot? Love checking novelty spots on google maps
Morro bay harbor
Kelp is the foils worst nightmare
how much do you weigh?
Around 180lbs
Boring! Did you try Wingfoil?
Haha yeah I wing occasionally but don’t have the best spots for riding waves.
Man I love foiling

Two Cheers for the girlfriend. My wife would have packed it in after Take #10. She's a Keeper ;)
😂
Love the video thanks. technique you are using is very similar to what i've been trying. I'm at the point where i often land decent, glide, get a few pumps and sink. Had a couple where i pump out and get about 10 or 15 seconds. I am using a small board (94cm Axis tray) just cause its what i have from kitefoiling. Very little volume. Would I be better off with a board with some volume? I sometimes feel im coming off foil with speed and might be able to pump out if board was more bouyant. I'm about 70kg, probably around 8 dock sessions, and lots of kite and wing foil experience. What size/volume board would you recommend? Thanks, Mike
You may be able to recover from a touch down easier with a larger surf foil board but I would say there is no reason to get one just for dock starts. The tray foil boards are ideal for handling them while running and pumping.
@@justthewingtips Ok thanks so much. Glad I just stuck with the tray. Much more consistent now and it really is a dream to run with, pump, and manage getting back up for another try.
Generally speaking I feel like jumping and having a time when you stop applying pressure on the foil is making things way harder. (And I learnt just the way you do there). I think of you manage to learn more on the board while you run and walk on the board without jumping and keeping your hand in place until you feet are settled would make things easier because you would be able to run faster and conserve much more of that initial speed. On the video I feel like you manage to overcome the difficulty of this launch because your stubborn enough and your very advanced pumping skill. Note that it's easier to lean on shorter boards while running. It's not a comparable context but just to be sure you get my point ruclips.net/video/8-JJ6iPQSys/видео.html Did you try that ?
For me I’d need a lower dock. It was too hard to run hunched over.
@@justthewingtips yeah sure, but in the end you manage to take 3 steps with your hand in place, so the only difference would be to just walk on the board keeping your hand in place instead of jumping. Maybe I'll try to find a high dock like yours and see if I can manage that or if there's an additional difficulty to it.
@@justthewingtips in fact the fall you show at 1:13 is really close to it, I would just keep the hands pushing on the board until the feet are settled. Do you think you wouldn't be able to have the sufficient initial speed doing that ?
@@yohann.roussel That would've been the ideal way to do it but I couldn't jump on without letting go.
@@justthewingtips Rhaaa... Too bad😭 fortunately you managed the other way !
Sick review, just bought lift 170 have had one session winging but I’m hooked. At 215lbs do you think it would be dock start possible at my weight??
I’d say with some practice yes but won’t be easy.
Wait. Everything stopped for me at the MILF sticker. How can I get one!? 😂
This was filmed a bit ago and I lagged on making them but the demand seems to be there so I’ll order more. Best to dm me on Instagram to order 🤙
These look super fun. How do people usually get into this? Do you just buy one and commit to it or what?
Usually getting towed behind a boat is the best way to learn.
But yes it takes an all in commit! And he said big foil. Axis 1310. Or 1150.
@@justthewingtips that makes sense. But I meant more like how did you get introduced to it? Do you have to know someone who can let you try it out? They seem a bit pricey, so just buying one seems like a big commitment.
@@testaklese if you live in Southern California I work at a foil shop and we can get you out for a lesson.
This thing is ridiculous! It's missing the motor and propeller! ;)
Hell yeah dude just learned myself on the Armstrong 1550v2..keen to move down to the smaller ones
Rippin
Wow this is so sick!!
Nice gliding and start I finally got one today it took like 400 tries
They’re definitely a challenge. A good spot is key though. I’ve failed many times trying challenging spots
where do you get those hardware wing screws? I like your channel name bro. thats legit going no straps no grip and the offshore wind
really sick
