I know Dave was a showoff, but he brought the Van Halen music alive, bringing out the power and energy of 3 great musicians. I agree Alex Van Halen was a powerhouse drummer, and there would be no Van Halen without him. He made the power and energy of the music, with Dave performing the showmanship.

People who didn’t grow up in the late 70’s and 80’s don’t understand just how big concerts were. Looking out over this crowd all you see is people having a rock and roll good time. No cell phones being held up. We just rocked out with the bands. It was great and we loved it. Oh for a Time Machine.

@@passiveaggressivenegotiato8087 Nothing has really changed - it's still boring as fuck between the fun occasions. The only difference is that the fun occasions are hyped up by social media beforehand (so much so that they are actually an anti-climax).
We knew this gig was THE event of the year - all those great bands in 1 day, before the times where EVERYTHING was carefully marketed and controlled to squeeze every penny out of concert-goers. These were the glory days, before the big money men got hold of festivals and turned them into miserable uniform manufactured "events" where you behave how they want you to and hand over large sums for the pleasure. This gig cost £16.00 entry and we just slept in a field, no tents and set nearby hedges alight to keep us warm before we sobered up enough to get home. Good times.

@@Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname Good post. I think the biggest buzz kill for concerts are Fire Marshalls nerfing the volume too much, so that you can hear a kaleidoscope of awful singing/screaming all around you during the whole concert. This was NOT case back in the 1980s. It might not be this way in cool locations, but this is the case in typical boring fly-over cities like mine. It's an outrageously over-priced karaoke party; where thousands sing at once. This actually caused Tom Petty to stop performing 'last dance with mary jane' at concerts, cause he got sick of a bunch of jacked-up shitty 'oh my my, oh hell yeah'

Same here. I was 16. Missed the coach back home, lost my mates whereabouts. Ended up sleeping under a hedge in the camping field, waking up Sunday morning soaked in morning dew (I think, I hope 😂) Walked to Derby train station, no money, bunked on a train. Got thrown off at Uttoxeter, had thumb a lift the rest of the way home. Those were the days. 16 year olds nowadays don’t even know how put the kettle on.

While waiting at a red light, I saw a car travelling too fast coming down the hill and slam into a car waiting in the opposite direction. Both cars careened into our lane! I floored it with my whole family in the car and performed my best Starsky & Hutch maneuver, hard right. Once my Dad figured out what had just happened, He said, "Good job!" and let me drive the whole 2 hours (thru NYC) to my Aunt & Uncles house on Long Island! Alex really played for the song without overplaying, even on songs like Hot for Teacher where he is technically playing a ton. It always fit. He had an amazing ability to follow the guitar in both style and tempo as needed. Most Van Halen songs end much faster than they started, which is why I think a lot of drummers don’t like his style. While some worship the robotic playing of Rush, I always preferred the wooden rollercoaster wild ride of Van Halen.

Early VH shows were totally jaw dropping. To see not only the band, but the entire audience going crazy. They always seemed 10 feet tall to me. When they were here for the Oakland concert in 1983 (or '82?) my buddies knew that they were staying at the Marriot Hotel. After the show we went and waited for the limos. DLR, MA and Manager Monk rolled up, stumbled out and were all smiles as my friend's camera flashed away. Monk walked over, grabbed the camera, and yanked the film out to expose it, which did not really surprise me... What _did_ surprise me a little was that Roth was a couple of inches shorter than me. I'm only 5'9".
Wish they could slow down the tempo a bit. Such as when they soundcheck without a huge audience in front of them. Listen to the following if you also want to hear Roth actually *_sing_* : "The mighty Van Halen soundchecks on their first tour, 1978. Rock Candy (!), ATBL, On Fire". Without the quotes.

Nothing like the Eddie squeeling guitar intro to the concerts back in the day. He would wind the crowd up and then blow them away. As their MC guy is finishing the introduction spiel, the whole crowd seemingly says "VAN HALEN" and drowns out the MC guy and the guitar for a second or two! TIMELESS AND PRICELESS. An era gone by.....

I liked it. Each song sounded good, fresh, different. then I heard the solo eruption. I was like ......ok this guy is next level crazy good. ...... years ahead I was into Circus magazine, atleast once a week sit at the magazine rack for like 30 minutes lol. and I remember around 83 or so when looking at the cover of Gutarist of the year & its a picture of Eddie , and I felt annoyed. Like Cmon enough already. for like 3 years straight i kept seeing Eddie listyed as best, greatest, guitarist of the year etc & was kinda annoyed because .... Ace wasnt getting any of that, nor was Randy or Glenn Tipton & KK etc. Always Eddie ...... EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE here we are over 40 years later, Ive been playing guitar for over 30 years & my honest opinion .... while the tapping can get old sometimes, Eddies playing was just incredible. its NOT ONLY did he do the tapping thing, thats just one tiny part of his playing. His rhythms were almost as impressicve as his leads. .......the list goes on & on & on & on. imo between 78- 84ish he simply was The Best. not the fastest not this not that, just THE bEST overall guitarist on earth imo back then.

Donnington was amazing in the 80s the crowd was insane and the plastic bottle wars were something else! I miss them times, this was my 3rd Donnington 🤘

I was playing soccer in England the summer of 84. I was staying with a friend for one more week after the soccer trip ended and had been told my friend had gotten tickets for this show. My friend meets me at the train station and we talk about things in general and then the talk about the concert happens. He said something came up and he had to sell the tickets. He was upset and sad for us.

I was no Van Halen fan but every time I hear one of their songs, I always think Michael Anthony's backing vocals were as big a part of their sound as Eddie's guitar.
