The only difference is that the fun occasions are hyped up by social media beforehand (so much so that they are actually an anti-climax). We knew this gig was THE event of the year - all those great bands in 1 day, before the times where EVERYTHING was carefully marketed and controlled to squeeze every penny out of concert-goers. These were the glory days, before the big money men got hold of festivals and turned them into miserable uniform manufactured "events" where you behave how they want you to and hand over large sums for the pleasure. @@Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname Good post. I think the biggest buzz kill for concerts are Fire Marshalls nerfing the volume too much, so that you can hear a kaleidoscope of awful singing/screaming all around you during the whole concert. This was NOT case back in the 1980s. It might not be this way in cool locations, but this is the case in typical boring fly-over cities like mine. I saw them on the 3rd show of the 84 tour back in January. Best concert I've ever seen standing about 20 ft in front of Eddies mike stand the entire time.
Dave...the Poster Child of A.D.D., God Love him! He admitted he was like that as a little kid...his parents explained to guests to their home that Dave was having his "monkey hour!"
here's a very random bit of trivia... parts of the Bionic Woman episode 'Jaime And The King' were filmed in dave's childhood home, and his dad also has an uncredited role as a guard. clip filmed in the house here... ruclips.net/video/bD8_1sln6zw/видео.htmlsi=xU_Q5RngdqIbQgJ3
I saw them in 1978 when they opened for Bob Seger in Bay City, Michigan!! I was 11 years old, my first concert!! I saw them twice more afterwards through the years!! Always with Dave!!
There's something about the synergy between two (unbelievablely talented, disciplined) brothers that makes the most magical music. Just like the Bee Gees with their harmonies singing, AVH and EVH with their drum/guitar harmonies is overworldly
Doesn’t matter to me what they looked like. Van Halen pre Sammy was groundbreaking and legendary. I remember getting the 1984 cassette my 1st year in college. Thats when they started bringing in the keyboard and synthesizers. Anything before that was pure gold.
So wrong, most often Dave was wasted drunk, forgetting the words while Sammy's voice range was so much better and a great companion to Eddie on the guitar.
Early VH shows were totally jaw dropping. To see not only the band, but the entire audience going crazy. They always seemed 10 feet tall to me. When they were here for the Oakland concert in 1983 (or '82?) my buddies knew that they were staying at the Marriot Hotel. After the show we went and waited for the limos. DLR, MA and Manager Monk rolled up, stumbled out and were all smiles as my friend's camera flashed away. Monk walked over, grabbed the camera, and yanked the film out to expose it, which did not really surprise me... What _did_ surprise me a little was that Roth was a couple of inches shorter than me. I'm only 5'9". Wish they could slow down the tempo a bit. Such as when they soundcheck without a huge audience in front of them. Listen to the following if you also want to hear Roth actually *_sing_* : "The mighty Van Halen soundchecks on their first tour, 1978. Rock Candy (!), ATBL, On Fire". Without the quotes.
Nothing like the Eddie squeeling guitar intro to the concerts back in the day. He would wind the crowd up and then blow them away. As their MC guy is finishing the introduction spiel, the whole crowd seemingly says "VAN HALEN" and drowns out the MC guy and the guitar for a second or two! TIMELESS AND PRICELESS. An era gone by.....
Journey gets the credit for the giant screen TV....Steve Perry insisted as a condition, acc to manager Herbie Herbert. "He'd only do the shows if all thepeople could see him upclose. The only solution was to do live TVon giant screens....so he could be seen AND they could play to crowds over 5,000 people" to paraphrase.@@gtrrobster

The world we live in would be a kinder and happier place to live in if we adopted the 80s vibe. Unfortunately, the next generation thought they were edgy by being angry and mad at everyone and everything, and unfortunately, that has trickled down to today's youth. I'm so glad I was part of the joy generation.
Yeah the emo, sit alone in the corner of your room attitude today is just insufferable. Having a sense of humor that’s unafraid to jab or offend is a big part in bringing that joy. Now everybody’s so afraid to make jokes that it keeps everybody apart, guessing what a good time is
Agreed. Even with 100,000 mostly young men and bikers with the odd Angel there was never the least bit of aggression. We all ‘got’ the humour on the music and each other
Ahhhh 1984, good year, the year I graduated high school, the year I turned 18, for new albums that year we had Van Halen 1984, Prince Purple Rain, Bruce Springsteen Born In The USA, Metallica Ride the lightning, Madonna Like a Virgin, The Cars Heartbeat City along with many others, I'm 57 and miss those days but the one thing I still have is the music.
I was there but didn’t see it after Diamond Dave made his first high kick on account of being smacked on the back of the head by an empty 1/4 bottle of vodka… spent rest of the set in first aid tent getting 5 stitches 😣. So it’s amazing to see this now 🎉 thanks 🙏🏻.. I’m always amazed when footage like this from old bands shows up from the days before iPhones 👍🏻😍
I know personally that being about 8feet in front of 2 -4/12 cabs and a 100watt tube peavey 5150 that the air those cabs moves vibrates your body and the hair on your legs when playing. So I can only imagine the air all those side fills and back line cabs are moving. I bet they literally feel tingling all over their bodies.
REALLY strong performance from DLR here, I always preferred the daylight shows from this early era, seemed like he had a lot of energy and did less drinking compared to evening arenas.
Born June 97'. I hope you all realize how lucky you had it. I'll be 70 in 2067. Look where we are already. By the way tho. They had cell phone's in Vietnam War. Just not for us lesser humans. They made a mistake by creating their own destruction device. The WWW. Now people can wake up to all the crimes on humanity that have been taking place. No internet?? We would all be completely enslaved I guarantee it.
What a great band, album, and tour. Thanks for the chance to see them on the 1984 tour. This is the album along with Eddie and Randy Rhoads and blizzard of ozz that got me interested in guitar. Thanks so much for this great video! It makes me wonder what Fave would have sounded like on the next album, 5150. To bsd the band didnt stay together after this tour.
Love this clip! So much excitement and energy. And I love the a-holes who get on the stage and are dragged away! They probably were STRONGLY discouraged from doing it again.
I saw DLR many years later during his solo tour in a small bar in upstate New York. There was just a few hundred people there. I was 10ft away from him and Diamond Dave gave it his all. Great performer and dedicated to giving you a good time. Friendly, funny and a true showman.
For VH to be and sound like VH, EVERY member is important. Eds guitar sound, Al's drumming and that signature snare sound, and Mike's vocals. Without any of those parts the soup is shit... Period.
I was there aged 19 and I can't believe I've found myself in the crowd 40 yrs on - I also found myself on the back cover of Gary Moore's live album "We Want Moore" in a pic taken on same day from the stage. It was an unbeliveably good day at Donington I will never forget as long as I live. So sad so many great guitarists there on that day are no longer with us, Gary Moore, Eddie Van Halen, Bernie Marsden, Malcolm Young, probably others too - gone but not forgotten !

Like Cmon enough already. for like 3 years straight i kept seeing Eddie listyed as best, greatest, guitarist of the year etc & was kinda annoyed because .... Ace wasnt getting any of that, nor was Randy or Glenn Tipton & KK etc. Always Eddie ...... EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE here we are over 40 years later, Ive been playing guitar for over 30 years & my honest opinion .... while the tapping can get old sometimes, Eddies playing was just incredible. its NOT ONLY did he do the tapping thing, thats just one tiny part of his playing. His rhythms were almost as impressicve as his leads. .......the list goes on & on & on & on. imo between 78- 84ish he simply was The Best. not the fastest not this not that, just THE bEST overall guitarist on earth imo back then.

The Real VH
Saw the 1984 concert.
Still not over it.
🤘
VH played in Atlanta Ga. 3 nights in a row in 1984. I was lucky enough to catch all 3 nights. Wonderful memories.
PVHD (Post Van Halen Disorder) I have it too. You'll have to live with it the rest of your life. 🤘🥸
In 10 months this video will be 40 years old !!! Let that sink in for a bit 😢
True, but it's a killer performance by Eddie, Alex and Mike; and no modern band will overcome this.
Yep and in 30 days I’ll be 62. So we were in our prime watching them create magic. And boy was it a great trip.❤️
I'm 52 and this brings back such good vibes.
@@minvike37 me too ..turned 52 last August.
@@mrbill9248 we made it and still listening to great rock roll...

I could literally watch this forever.
Back when all the lights, pyrotechnics, big screens with tons of graphics weren't needed.
The music was enough!!❤🎶🎤🎶🎤🎶🎤
Van Halen had an outstanding light show.
This performance was during the day, so they did not use them.
Yeah it's pretty lame when a rock band needs a big LED screen at a show --- just fucking PLAY and ENTERTAIN if you got the talent
@@kerzytibok3211
The screen is helpful for huge concerts where many people are far far away
They blinded me for about 10 mins back in 1984!!!
@@gtrrobster
Journey gets the credit for the giant screen TV....Steve Perry insisted as a condition, acc to manager Herbie Herbert. "He'd only do the shows if all thepeople could see him upclose. The only solution was to do live TVon giant screens....so he could be seen AND they could play to crowds over 5,000 people" to paraphrase.@@gtrrobster

Oh man, love that they played 'On Fire'. Was great seeing them together like this playing some of the classics

VH, and other big groups of the era, were amazing. LOOK at that sea of humans, all paying their fifty bucks, standing in lines and watching the concert in exhausting dehydrating conditions... and LOVING IT. I've stood in a number of these huge events to see huge bands and wow, what an experience! I doubt this will occur again... unfortunately. VH and others like it were just lighting in a bottle...
50 bucks? According to the Exchange Rates that day, it cost the equivalent of $21.12, haha. What a day!
@@Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname you have to account for inflation, that's what he ment by 50 bucks. $21.12 back then is equivalent to $50.
And waiting for ac/dc the headliners 😄
If you look at old ticket stubs to this show it was $11. In advance, $12 @ the door. 80’ and 90’s were the greatest times for concerts IMO.

The world we live in would be a kinder and happier place to live in if we adopted the 80s vibe. Unfortunately, the next generation thought they were edgy by being angry and mad at everyone and everything, and unfortunately, that has trickled down to today's youth. I'm so glad I was part of the joy generation.
Yeah, but the 60s freaks started at all with their free love and promiscuity that always ends in disaster

Damn man. That sucked
Donnington was a dangerous pastime wish I could go back
12:29 Eddie asks for more drums on his monitor... 👀👀 Man! the stage volume at the time was killer! Look at those side fills too!
And notice how he plays the riff one handed while doing so.👍👍
I know personally that being about 8feet in front of 2 -4/12 cabs and a 100watt tube peavey 5150 that the air those cabs moves vibrates your body and the hair on your legs when playing. So I can only imagine the air all those side fills and back line cabs are moving. I bet they literally feel tingling all over their bodies.
Ok, that planned flip ver was fucking awesome!
I miss the 80s.

REALLY strong performance from DLR here, I always preferred the daylight shows from this early era, seemed like he had a lot of energy and did less drinking compared to evening arenas.
This drum intro to 'Everybody Wants Some' is next level - even better than 'Hot for Teacher" intro - and that was the Everest of drum intros.

It blows my mind how many people manage to get on that stage! Some even manage to touch Eddie! 😆
Van Halen was extra special because of Michael Anthony’s backing vocals! A perfect storm of talent here.
Love this clip! So much excitement and energy. And I love the a-holes who get on the stage and are dragged away! They probably were STRONGLY discouraged from doing it again.
One of the best front men ever David Lee Roth 😂
I saw DLR many years later during his solo tour in a small bar in upstate New York. There was just a few hundred people there. I was 10ft away from him and Diamond Dave gave it his all. Great performer and dedicated to giving you a good time. Friendly, funny and a true showman.
Eddie once said a band is like a soap, you have to have all the right ingredients. But Eddie was so important to this soap, the best ingredient...
I meant to say soup not soap lol

David Lee Roth. The best front man in the business. That hand stand into a flip over Michael was awesome!!! He could do it all.
