Homeschooling is nice but kids do need to socialize with their peers. The best way is for parents to set up a school like setting for the neighborhood where the parents can teach multiple students all at once. Social life for the kids, and the parents get to educate the kids as they see fit.

You don't...but the major obstacle for most American families is having one parent home to be able to home school. There's a small percentage that have enough money to have one parent not work or work less to be able to home school so for most it's not even about arguing for or against homeschooling, it's just logistically not possible.

Yes but she’s dead wrong on why…. The one on one attention/tutoring that comes from homeschooling your kids is why 5 hrs on a subject goes further than that same five hrs in a class room where the attention is split between 18 kids. Which means you can either get through a whole semester much faster in a homeschool setting than if this kid and this subject were covered in a school, and that’s only if all other factors were equal. Because depending on the child and the subject, it could take way longer, which is neither good nor bad.

I cried when my daughter wanted to be homeschooled because I didn't think I was capable of being her teacher. That was 9th grade, now we're 3 years into it and it's the best decision she made for her mental state, kids are cruel! She is her own person with her own thoughts, she's so mature and has a beautiful outlook on life. She's able to work at the local youth center because she has flexibility in her schedule. The lack of social interaction was my biggest concern, she has a circle of friends any parent would be proud of. If in school, would she still feel the way she used to feel about herself? Would she have the confidence in herself that she has now? Homeschool changed her life for the better and I'm really proud of her for making such a big decision at a young age.

amazing that you could consider your childs words as most are conditioned not to do so, your child will respect you in old age,she won't become satanic as big component of becoming perverse and satanic is a disconnection from your roots,,,,in my opinion if the perents are decent people, productive members in society and have a good relationship with their kids ,there doesn't need to be a specific education at all, you just live and you learn!! especially if your very successful and there is love in the air then the kids strive to be successful as you as well if their is no outside influence messing it up the kid will naturally want to learn this and that, and when that internal desire is awake then the input is very minimal,,, i see it on youtube allot how wonderful those homekids communicate and much more worldly they are,,,, and also when home learning you can have your ideas whats good for your kid to learn and your kid can have their own ideas what suits them, and you compromise in both and when your kid learns something that they are not invested in ,they do it for you, to please and respect you thus even if it ends up not being important to them it still is a respect to you that they did it,so its still very meaningful ,same if they end up not doing what they were passionate about, they enjoyed expanding their brain they will love you for supporting them in their quest and its all meaningful,, but when they are in the system its completely meaningless ,most of what's learned is meaningless to the perents to the kid and even to the teacher, everyone is just doing there part/job as a means to an end, yeah the perents care for the good mark but they are not invested in it,,,life is about connections and everything you do should improve your connection to others to your perents to your kids ,schools by definition is disconnecting

I've been teaching h.s. science for 32 years and I used to think that socialization was the major 'con' of homeschooling. I was wrong. Homeschooling parents purposefully seek out interactions to fill this gap. They have the option to do extracurriculars at the local school. And the time it takes a traditional school to teach the 3 r's is much longer than takes in a 1-on-1 session, so home education is vastly more efficient which leaves tons of time for the kids to learn things they are more interested in. The stuff you can find online makes homeschooling a much better option than it used to be without the internet. Finally, the negative impact on kids in a traditional school is way worse than any negative that homeschooling could have.

After my son's kindergarten teacher destroyed my son's love of learning, I pulled him out of public school and homeschooled him from first grade on.
It took me 3 years to get his love of learning back, to begin taking chances again, to grow back some confidence, and not feel stupid.
I homeschooled all of my three of my kids. We joined several homeschool groups, one of which had 250 kids of all ages involved. My kids have thrived. They are all able to socialize with anyone, they have a healthy self-esteem, and they take responsibility for themselves. I get compliments from strangers about how engaging and mature they are almost daily.
She is right, you have to remove your idea of what homeschool is and start over. They can learn a whole lot more if you do homeschool differently than regular school. One example of this is how public schools waste a lot of time in crowd management, getting in line and going from class to class. Homeschool can be much more child led, where they retain their love of learning following passions, but still learn all of the important basics, all before noon.
I'm constantly awe of what my kids have accomplished at such a young age. They've began businesses on their own, and I've almost taken for granted how mentally, emotionally, and socially healthy they are. I meet kids from public school all the time who seem depressed and stressed, and it breaks my heart.

Blue hair is a homosexual which means they are not capable of having a conversation. I remember I had an incident with a gay black neighbor before I moved out of the lower levels. Gay and black is already a protected group. I asked him to listen and that we could find a solution he walked away screaming crying saying "talk to management" that day I realized I don't like homosexuals. Before that day I didn't care because it don't matter to me but because I noticed those shared behaviors I realized I don't have to like individuals who are not capable of a rational conversation nor do they have intentions in finding solutions but rather expressing their feelings in emotional tantrums making scenes. He was In the wrong and I tried to be a good person to explain to him something I had no obligation in doing. The homosexuals we have known thru family friends are always involved in domestic violence situations which leads back to the point of no emotional control. I wouldn't use the word homophobic because that implies fear or something as opposed to repulsive perception of someone based on their group sharing disfunctional traits that interfere with coexisting with other individuals in peace.

In school they only teach you that there's only one way of doing it, they teach you how to be a slave for society instead of flourishing out of society.

We moved and the only private school in the area had no room for my 4th grader and public school has never been an option for them solely because I don't like what the public school system is indoctrinating our children with. My husband and I decided to homeschool this year and so far all is flowing smoothly. We cover the basic subjects; math, ELA science and history. It's an education not an indoctrination. I hear horror stories from my niece's and nephews on how kids consider themselves cats and dogs and are purring and meowing, wearing tails, half are confused about their gender etc etc. The school system is a mess at the moment and if I must continue to homeschool them, then so be it.

Great discussion. 34 years ago before digital and the internet, I decided to pull my two kids out of school. They were 7 and 9 at the time. I was constantly questioned on a daily basis as it was not a known option at the time.
I began with home education and then switched to natural learning.
Our kids are now 31 and 28, both self employed, they have a solid group of friends of a variety of ages, are financially self sufficient, empathetic, great conversationalists, of high intelligence, life long learners and have good social values.
It’s so beautiful to have the level of closeness that we’ve always had. We constantly debated, they came to work with me on production sets. My son is pursuing his film career shooting and processing on 16mm of which he taught himself. My daughter is a life model in the arts industry, trains other life models and works part time in the medical industry.
I know I was ahead of my time, but being an entrepreneur myself for the last 28 years, I believed and rightly so, that teaching them how to imagine, create, think and sell would be the future of work. I was right.
They also travelled overseas with us, have since travelled overseas independently more than 3 times each.
I’ve always believed that if you can ‘sacrifice’ your time to be with your kids at home, it’s a viable option to consider.
Incase you’re wondering, my kids always had the option to choose school at anytime. My son wanted to enter highschool at 15. They put him two years ahead as his maturity and academics were far above. He then went to university. My daughter tried highschool for three months and then resigned. She found the classroom environment a disruptive place for learning.
It’s not for everyone. But it’s a valid option. With the internet there’s nothing you can’t learn on your own.

I have home educated my three kids for five years now.
The pros are: 1.Academics-choosing curriculum that aligns with your values and child’s level of rigor, customize learning for each kid, and focus where the interests are for your child.
    2. Environment-you control the environment your children learn in and are raised in, No bullying, not having your kid being exposed to vices from other kids ie. being shown Porn on someone’s iPhone at recess, never gonna have a school shooting or have a dude wearing a dress sexually assault your daughter in the bathroom, and never will have a teacher sexually assault your child. The sexual assault examples are not common but do happen enough in public schools to pose a risk.
    3. Values- You are able to establish your children’s value system. Teach them what is good, true, and beautiful and why. This also means you are not needing to de-program your kids when they get home from school or having your kid rebel against you because they are taking in their teachers views as their own. Ultimately your child will decide what is true for themselves but during the rearing stage of life, it’s the parents job to shape them. There is no neutral ground in the home or in the school. Wherever your child goes, they are being messaged to and proselytize by someone.
    The cons are:
    1. It can be a lot of work for the parent to teach. It is a sacrifice. The most common thing I hear from parents is, “ I could never home school because I don’t have the patience.” The truth is no one has enough patience, but you do your best and learn yourself how to help each of your kids. It’s just like parenting. If you can parent, you can teach.
    2. Financial cost. You are losing an income if you had a two income household. You are paying for your kids tuition twice; once in the property taxes that funds the public schools and in the supplies and curriculum that you must purchase for home education.
    3. Socialization must be intentional. Kids need to be around other kids. We put our kids in sports, church/camps, and they spend time with their cousins who home educated too. Kids reflect who they spend time with. If your kid is around other immature kids for 7 hours a day all week long, then they will act like that. If your kids are interacting with adults and having conversations with adults, they will level up in their maturity. They also will seem less jaded and rebellious.
I take it year by year. I view the education and rearing of my kids as my responsibility because my wife and I brought them into the world; it’s not the state’s responsibility. I view home education as my duty and a necessity because of how toxic and screwed up the public school system is. I’m open to private education too if one day we can afford it.
    Hope that helps.

Who are you to question one's decision to decide to homeschool vs having some stranger teach their kids just because you think they should work more to bring home more money, while some strangers raise and teach their kids? Why do you care if they tighten up the purse strings in order to be sure their children are taught the type of education, morals, values, etc. they want their children to have vs allowing some stranger that opportunity? To me, this shows they care more about their children than to allow some stranger the opportunity to raise their kids with their morals, values and style of education over themselves. @Bonzo Cleach you are the problem with this country making stupid assumptions and using childish name calling ad hominems to try and make an argument. People can choose to homeschool if they want without immature judgemental people questioning their reasoning. When you have more ideologues and predators indoctrinating and grooming children in the public school system today, I would say homeschooling is a MUCH better option so that parents can be sure their children don't get taught the immoral values and political vues of some ideologue that they don't agree with. It is happening at a major rate today, so much so that our country is being torn on half. The public school system has become a major failure, putting ideology and cult loke religion in the classrooms disguised as education. If a parent chooses to homeschool their child yiu have no right to question. Mock or ridicule them. If you want to send your child to a public school that is your choice. Parents don't HAVE to have 2 incomes to make ends meet. They simply have to change priorities to make sure they have the necessities in order to pay the bills while 1 patent stays home. I certainly would NEVER take advice from someone like you when it comes to finances. Anyone can do it, if they make the right choices in life and don't put themselves in financial debt. Make wise financial decisions and you can make ends meet. My mom worked part time and my dad would work 2-3 jobs to make sure we had someone home when school was out and we had the money to buy the things we needed. I went to public school back when they actually just educated kids and didn't have to coddle them or use special pronouns and couldn't fly cult flags like BLM and gay flags in the classroom. A time when teachers wouldn't have a political agenda and bully students over politics in the classroom. Even though my mom worked part time with 4 boys, we were still able to play sports all throughout our childhood, have a boat and motorhome and take vacations to go camping every year and go to the lake and fish and ski most of the year. But hey. I guess stupid people like you will make ignorant arrogant snap judgements and and use childish ad hominems in a forum such as this because it gives cover for you to say things you wouldn't dare say to others faces

I am an advocate for homeschooling as long as the parent doing the teaching is patient and has a network of support to fill in for any weak spots. In our case, we utilized co-ops and local junior colleges to help fill in the gaps when our high school students were in subjects that we could not cover. That allowed them to also get college credit in high school. However, there are many parents that are not equipped to homeschool. They may be overwhelmed with impatience, be completely stressed out and end up with bad relationships with the children. Be sure to homeschool with love and an open heart, and not fear and a closed mind. This woman is to be commended for her willingness to homeschool, but homeschooling will not guarantee her children won’t make up their own minds about what they believe culturally and otherwise when they’re adults.

Instead of the misery of being forced awake every day, in the dark during winter, and being pressured to go go go to meet that horrible early morning deadline the school imposes on them. Rural kids have to wake up at an even more unnaturally early hour to stand around in the dark cold morning waiting for the bus to come, and endure the mind numbing commute every day- not to mention what social garbage they have to deal with every day on the bus. The choir teacher noticed that I was quiet, and she constantly would say to me, sing louder, speak up. . . Towards the middle of second year, came the Christmas play. "A Christmas Carol". Whoever wanted to audition wrote their names down. I had no desire to audition or even be in the play for that matter, and didn't sign up for any part. Then came the day of auditions, for the roles of scrooge and bob cratchit, both one of the major roles, and has a singing solo in the play. The teacher calls my name out first to audition. i was caught off guard. . So i walk to the mic, find the words, and she begins to play on piano. I literally only got a chance to let out half a second since opening my mouth, and the teacher stops playing, says, "that's enough. go back to your seat." yet she cast me for the role. To this day I am glad she did. I am glad that I was put on the spot out of my comfort zone, because the whole play is a great memory from my childhood, even though i did a terrible job playing Bob Cratchit.

Instead, she was able to spend hours a day honing her craft and has pride in knowing that she can bring joy to so many people. Fourth child is getting an online college degree, because it’s half the price, and she will graduate without debt.

Our homeschool league has a co-op that has enrolled over 250 students and we are in a small rural area! We also have a homeschool sports league. Our teens have a group that meets regularly. My son, who is an only child, interacts in person with his peers at least 4-5 days out of the week. Also, people generally do not understand just how much time is spent on non-instructional tasks during the typical public school day. 🙄

Not even a minute in to this one... Adam & the purple haired guy must have had really awful parents if they couldn't handle being around them. Heck, the purple haired guy says he was homeless at one point and preferred being homeless! Or maybe the problem was with them and not with the parents.

The public school system is crippling for the black community. Which is unfortunate because so many black families are single parent homes and younger kids can't be left at home alone. We, especially, need to get our kids out. My son is 6. He turned 6 this past October. He's reading on a third grade level and doing second grade everything else. He's actually moving to third grade spelling tomorrow. We homeschool. We're ordinary people of above average but not genius level intelligence. He's so far ahead of his peers it would be to his detriment to put him in public school. Because black kids, especially black male students, are excluded from advanced classes and disproportionately targeted for disciplinary measures. He's six. He is very much emotionally six. He's a very active, easily distracted little boy. Most six year old boys are. But mine would be in trouble because all of that energy would be forced to adhere to standards of less than mediocrity because "black kids can't read, write or do math."

You are very fortunate to have an opportunity to do this. We were unable to homeschool our children because both parents had to work full-time to meet our physiological needs, but public school did not work well for them all and all. They were much more well adjusted before we sent them to school, and are beginning to find themselves more successfully now that they are out of school. It only takes a few discriminating staff members to do lasting damage. I know because I had a few of those teachers when I went to school as well. We absolutely need homeschooling more than anyone, congratulations being able to provide this, it is not a reasonable option for many of us.

Balance! That is the answer for me. As a mother of two children I can’t imagined be the teacher of my own child teaching academics. I already stressed by teaching the basics of every day!

veronica yunes: How about the balance of parents being involved enough and willing to help enough in spots the kid might be stuck, to ensure the kid has the opportunity and motivation to get a decent education in public school?
That's how it was in my day in the 60's, 70's, and it worked well overall for the vast majority of kids who tried and took college track classes.

The best way to explain the comparison and benefits of homeschooling Vs. Public schools would be to having a 'Personal Trainer' Vs. 'Public Gym'.

One of my son's began repairing computers at age 12 and before he graduated, he designed and built 4 high quality computers from parts. He struggled to read, and needed vision therapy to read. So we focused on his gifts. He could build almost everything both with wood and components.

I was home educated till about age 14, where I begged my mom to let me go to public school, and I feel like I got the best of both worlds because I believe learning at home for myself allowed me to become more efficient with my time, and to know I was capable, my mom used the Abeka books and I loved the science books and they had quizzes and tests in them where I would go back and study any that I got wrong so that I understood it better, when I went to public school they thought I was strange because I looked forward to exams, for me it was a chance to see how much I'd retained in my learning. Even though I considered myself shy I was confident enough to debate my teachers in science because of it being one of my favorite subjects and I learned it from a biblical perspective so when they taught the big bang theory as if it was fact I challenged them as to how it had any more weight than the creation theory and which one made more sense...to me a Creator made much more sense, in any case I am very thankful that my parents taught me those first 14 years because it gave me a base of confidence in them that allowed me to stand up against the world when it didn't align with my beliefs, after being in public school I lost that for a while, I think it taught me to conform and I was lost for a while. But then I came back to my base and thought about things again, why I believe what I believe being a Christian, and I found my confidence and fearlessness again and I am just so incredibly grateful for the way I was raised. It taught me great work ethic as well so I have been quite successful in all the different jobs I tried because I was efficient and hardworking. But it's a big topic and I have loads to say on it so I'll leave it at that, but if you're able to home educate your kids I think it's just awesome.

I’m with you on the creation vs big bang and even evolution. It was two conflicting ideas being taught to me and I ended up feeling confused and lost. Recently I have gone strongly back to my faith and the world makes much more sense. I don’t feel lost the way I did in public school

I’m on my second year homeschooling my boys (10 & 12) after them being public schooled.
I know now I should have always homeschooled them but we learn and grow and can’t change the past.
My boys are happier and our family is closer than it’s ever been. I’m picking their curriculum and teaching them how we see fit. I strive to teach them accurate history.
We are Christians so everything is taught with a biblical worldview. It’s been a wonderful decision and I will never put them back in state indoctrination camp ever again.

one thing I went thru is the bullying in public school from students and coaches...reason....I wore glasses, had a passive attitude as I was told...you don't fight in school...I got kicked out three times for finishing a fight. Being passive doesn't mean I can't fight. What irks me....the teachers never looked out for us....the adults in school...to busy hitting on the gorgeous French teacher in the mini skirt.

It's interesting to me that people think homeschooled kids have no socialization. They stay home with their parents and see no people outside that. My child has homeschool groups on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. He had 18 kids at his birthday party. He had 8 other kids trick or treating with him. No lack of socialization here.
