VICE...I've posted this on several videos in this panel series...the short cut is great and we appreciate the content. However, it's clear that there's more footage. These panels are great! Why don't you let us, YOUR VIEWERS, benefit from the having access to the entire conversation? Can you not release both?
This discussion is the epitome of "we need a discussion about this discussion about this...." Only a couple of the people in here talked about real-world applications. The rest was useless posturing.
I think the problem is- parents don’t realize that just because you raise your kids one way doesn’t mean that your kids won’t experience life outside of your beliefs and eventually change what they believe.

@@anthonygarcia1148 depends on how it's done. I've met some impressive homeschooling kids in University and lead by their morals and convictions which made them far from "soft." It just depends on willingness, environment, culture, the teacher(s), and etc. I'm not advocating for either, I went to public school, but a blanket statement on home schooling results isn't correct either.
I agree, I was homeschooled up until 8th grade and it was one of the worst things that I ever went through. There needs to be more oversight when it comes to homeschooling.

I’m surprised I don’t see comments praising the high school girl! For being much younger and a current student who is affected by the things being discussed/decisions adults make around/for her education, she was very well spoken and had great comments contributing to the conversation! At her age I don’t think I would’ve been as confident and knowledgeable esp around a group of adults in a discussion like this

The real problem is that parents aren’t disciplining their bad, spoiled kids and encouraging them to do better academically, so they hold all the other good students back (due to limited resources and time). I was the quiet kid and I can remember many times feeling genuine sympathy for my overwhelmed teachers whenever the troubled kids wouldn’t stop being clowns and wasting everyone’s learning time. Teachers aren’t babysitters or daycare workers. It’s getting worse and worse and that’s a huge reason why many educators are quitting.

@@quicktoreason2722no they didn't. Majority of Parents won't even show up for school planning events. To be clear, I'm only speaking about my district. Which is a bottom 10 district in the nation. And we have one of the only school boards that are actually paid. For reference they make about 30,000 a year. This year we just started talking about disassembling the school board. Our city got roughly 80 million. Parents wouldn't even show up to vote on where that money should be spent for their kids in the city. No after school programs came back. And we are closing down 11 schools. Those schools have the most IEPs and 504s. Which means next year some classrooms in the elementary schools will have 40 to 60 students in them. Not to mention the teacher shortage. There are many contributing factors. The terrible parenting is the root cause of a lot of issues in the classroom right now. We can't even get to discussing what the kids should be learning. Because it's not a learning environment anymore. I'm the parent teacher liaison for my son's school. These last two years have been very trying to say the least. (In full disclosure, my son was private schooled the majority of his life. We switched to public school because of a robotics program he loves. The program he's in at his public school still places him in a different "education system" than the rest of the school. Because it's an international program. 93% of his school academically does not qualify). My son is not a straight a student not even close. He just has parents who Ask to see his grades and make time to teach him how to study.

Parents shouldnt have to feel the need to constantly be checking on the school board to make good decisions but now with all the mess that the board has done, parents have to. While juggling to survive in this environment where both parents are required to work to make a decent living wage to even get by. most parents are working paycheque to paycheque - and now on top of that already demanding commitment they have to also baby sit the school board. The very fact that you think people are terrible parents because you have the privilege to find time to go and be more involved shows how disconnected from reality you are. Considering your kid was "private schooled" proves my point exactly. Its like those new mothers who suddenly act like they know what all baby's are about and how they know more than everyone else. crazy. Your lived experience is just that, your lived experience. not everyone is on that same boat - The problem here is the Unionized teachers that feel like they are impenetrable. Teachers unions needs to be abolished and we need better access to teachers that actually want to teach kids things that they can further their future with. None of this sexualized education, just important subjects that actually matter.

@@quicktoreason2722 I have taught in schools of different academic levels in both private and public sector. The role of teacher is a job, and everyone capable would like jobs that's secure (unless it pays really well). Abolishing unions would simply make the entire profession felt unprotected and lose a ton of members. I think you can call for adjustments in the way unions work, but abolishing is going to destroy the local education system. (I'm not in US so I don't know any further but I'm sure that prediction is a reasonably foreseeable outcome.)
On the topic of parents involvement, parenting is a natural responsibility. In majority of species in the animal kingdom, the young learn to hunt, to run, to socialise from their family. They also learn values and attitudes from the same source. Children from families that values education usually out-performs the other end of the spectrum in academics and beyond curriculum achievements. Not because they are somehow more talented, but because their family have cultivated a habit of valuing and committing to learn. It has nothing to do with family income, some of the most committed parents I've known are Asian immigrants with low income jobs. Those believe education is the most reliable way to a brighter future and so they would encourage their child to commit into learning. It does not take much extra time or money to let your children know you care about their wellbeing and future.
If taking 20-30 minutes a day to have chat, to let the children feel that they are loved, to help them organise their progress, to praise them for trying to improve are too much to ask for, I think they shouldn't have had any child or they deserved to be blamed as a 'terrible parent'.
Teach students how to think. Not what to think. Always question, be curious, and never stop learning.

Really? :/ Getting a bunch of ignorants to spread misinformation without context. It would be more of a civil and educational discussion if it actually had educated people like college professors and Drs to speak on such topics or at the very least a fact checker in the room to shut down the misinformation being spread.
...Like the bereft vermin saying "the British ended slavery", like the enslaved people didn't revolt and free themselves, they kept revolting, fighting back the colonisers ( the British, French, Spanish, Dutch etc). The African-Haitian people had just defeated the colonisers, which helped in forcing the British to sign papers, largely because the British are sneaky and wanted to pay themselves, as they made sure they paid the enslavers reparations and not the once enslaved (sickeningly, African-Haitians and Black British people for e.g were forced to pay the enslavers reparations and not the other way around for their enslavement). Also, since those papers were signed, the British and the French and virtually all the coloniser nations, have used neo colonialist tactics to keep the once enslaved Black nations oppressed, like in places like the Caribbean, where even the British monarchy is still the head of state, once enslaved nations to this day, their head of office still a British coloniser.
Pretty sad how closed minded, the generations that say they seek more open minds. We do celebrate conversations like this.
The Homeschool parents were really revealing. They complain about indoctrination in schools, yet clearly only want their kids thinking one way about everything. If it's something you don't like, its "indoctrination"; but if you agree than its "education". Of course parents have a right be involved in education, but exposing children to different views and people is also important.
Exactly. By limiting what your child consumes and the ideals/beliefs they’re surrounded by, you’re giving them more hurdles to get over in adulthood. You’ll never be surrounded by people who think exactly like you, and by having a child in school, you’re teaching them to not only exist and work with people who are vastly different from them, but they’ll also grow from being around those people
I don't agree, I went to public school and was exposed to terrible things, drugs, criminal behavior, bullying, survival of the fittest mentality. I can understand why parents would opt for homeschool to avoid all those pitfalls. Also it's not the children don't socialize or interact with other people from different background etc. So yes it's okay to be selective in how you're children are exposed to different ideas and views that could being them harm or bad association.
A parent's job is to "indoctrinate" or teach a child the moral and principled world views that they want the child to have. The truth is, the most influential of all educational factors is the interactions between a parent and a child, not a teacher and a child. Public education has evolved as a way of leveling the playing field, not as a means to achieve excellence. In today's world, for many children, home schooling and school choice is often the better way in so-called progressive areas..
Kids are indoctrinated into this world at an early age. The LGBT folks want to indoctrinate into their belief system just like a normal parent wants to indoctrinate. I want my kid to be exposed to lgbt materials when they are old enough to have their own identity so they can be accepting of different value systems but understand their value system is not one that sees high numbers of suicide etc.
It's your responsibility to indoctrinate your child genius... Not the governments.
One one my biggest pet peeves with homeschooling is that most parents absolutely do not have the knowledge to teach high school level classes. I'm an engineer with a master's degree in bioengineering: I can teach my high schooler Honors class levels in both math and biology. Can I teach honors level history, chemistry, english? No. No one can boast to have advanced knowledge in all subjects enough to teach on all subjects and not harm their child's learning. Parents need to communicate with their kids at home on social issues and religious beliefs, but don't fool yourselves homeschoolers: your children do learn less than mine.

@@jonnyfendi2003 If you say so, but don't forget that unlike what most people like to believe, not all opinions are equal. There is a reason humans gather in places of knowledge and share ideas: this is how we are wired to learn, for the most part. My experience in middle class American has shown me that not many people can successfully teach above elementary grade levels and this is a generous assumption on most people.
Just this for an example: I hired a PhD candidate to tutor my son in mathematics online twice a week: he still learns better in school than with her, even though she is highly qualified. It's the setting that makes the difference and he is 15. Also, has straight As in all subject with honors classes in math, biology, honors and literature.

I am a psych major with minors in family studies and business management. My 9 year old is home schooled and is doing a 3 year course of classes on Vet Science, has put in 200 hours of volunteer work at a local animal shelter and also volunteers at a vet clinic. Assists surgeries, gives oral meds. She can do the math to determine meds based on an animal's weight and the recommendation for the med. And then physically give it to them. Including anesthesia. She is also taking a 2 year series of courses on marine biology that will culminate with a camp in another country. She has done 3 years of Spanish, as well as ASL and Latin. She has just stated volunteering reading at a toddler group. She goes to lessons on finances with a local investment banker who gives kids lessons. I do about 20 hours a week of one on one education with her outside of what I outsource. Homeschooling does not mean the parent is the only transmitter of the education. I am not a science pro and my second language is French.. Atleast not natural sciences. I don't need to be as a homeschool parent. I just need to facilitate my child's education and outsource as needed and wanted. Oh, by the way she has a 10th grade reading level at last standardized testing over the summer. If she was in public school she would be in 3rd grade. Please tell me what more she would be learning in school.
@@raes8520 My point exactly: you are a psych major and highly educated. Most people I see on these panels are not and do not have the capacity to educate their children like you do. Also, you mentioned she is 9 years old and reads at a 10 grade level, which is wonderful and in line with your own education, but I respectfully doubt you would be qualified to teach 10th grade math, chemistry and physics, just as I would not be able to teach english literature. We all have our own areas of expertise and there is a limit to what a single person can do in regards to teach advanced notions. I am sure your daughter is doing wonderful now, but she does have a highly educated mother to teach her.
OMG MRS POMEROY WAS MY FRESHMAN ENGLISH TEACHER! I’m so shocked to see her on here. She was pregnant with her first kid while teaching us and decided to be a stay at home mom after. So happy to see her on here, I’ll never forget reading Romeo and Juliet with her ❤

I loved how respectful everyone was even though there was clearly tension in the room. As someone who was homeschooled, I felt very prepared for the real world because I wasn’t swayed in my beliefs. I had a strong foundation so when I was faced with the world, I was able to critically examine what others were saying was true. I was apart of a collaborative homeschooling setting where I didn’t just have my mom teaching me but other mothers teaching me and my friends which allowed for a community and multiple perspectives. I think settings like co-ops, charter schools, and parents setting up classes for other students out of their homes are great ways to allow for students to interact with different communities but also allow for there to be immense choice for parents. Homeschooling can be made accessible but we need to create communities if we want to make that happen.
As long as you're prepared to live and work in the world with other people, like me , an African American Queer woman without barring me of services because you don't like my lifestyle, then I can totally say homeschooling was good for you. As long as your parents weren't Jim Jones in this mess, great on you.

I am an elementary teacher in a public school. The topic of “indoctrination” really makes me frustrated. I work at an urban school in a neighborhood where students are predominantly lower income. We have a large percentage of our school below grade level and unable to read. This “indoctrination” everyone talks about is not a core issue and isn’t happening at any school in my city. Can we talk about how to help these struggling students, low attendance rates, lack of parental involvement. I teach kindergarten and over half my class is NOT prepared for school in many aspects. Parental involvement is crucial to a child’s success.

As a person of color the "indoctrination" fou feel is non existent is actually a highly effective way to enslave the minds of my people. I see people so indoctrinated that they don't know if they are a male or female, think they're American, have no knowledge of what they're nationality is and believe they are black or African American. They also after graduating can't build a house, grow food, cook, sew, not know that herbs are medicine, etc. This actually makes you dumb and cripples you. Seperation is necessary we need our own curriculum. We dont even speak our Native tongue which further pushes us away from each other instead of binding us.
I can tell you, as a person fresh out of high school, that indoctrination is a BIG ongoing issue in my old school and many in my community.
Many teachers fail to keep their political beliefs and personal lives out of the classroom, and there are more teachers constantly telling or emotionally manipulating students into sharing the same political beliefs as them than those who don't.
These include topics such as abortion, lgbtq+, political parties, racism, sexism, oppression, social topics, and many social events as they happened (the students' opinions on them)
I had a few teachers who openly racist, mostly against white people or students who made racist comments about white people without being reprimanded or punished in any way.
I had many teachers put students against each other on political and social debates where students were encouraged by teachers to manipulate and shame others into agreeing with the popular opinion or teacher's opinion. Some teachers even participated in shaming students who didn't agree with views. For instance, shaming students who didn't believe trans should be allowed in the bathroom of their choice.
It was such a sickening environment in that aspect, and this type of thing is more prevalent than people think. It needs to stop.
I whole heartedly agree with parental involvement. I tried to be meaningfully involved with my son in the public school system... Let me clarify what I mean by being "meaningfully involved": Simply asking every teacher what curriculum they are using, so I can follow along at home. When I asked this simple question, I was ignored or simply pointed to the education standards by the state. It was like these teachers had no idea what the word "curriculum" means.
My local education system is not set up for meaningful parental involvement in my opinion. It's set up and encouraged for parents to join PTA, so they can chaperone dances and bring teachers muffins. Those are probably nice extras, but I'm a single mom, and I don't have time for fru-fru. I want to know the meat and potatoes of what my son is being presented with in school. It's so frustrating that this basic request is being treated like it's coming from a 3-headed alien. It's why I pulled my son out of public school despite being a product of it myself.
I can imagine that teachers spend A LOT of time trying to "redirect" and address problematic behavior in the classroom. My district's approach to discipline was laughable. If the parents feel the pain of their misbehaved children (meaning they have consequences themselves) we will see behavior change and schools improve.

The very idea of giving teachers an opportunity to not talk about slavery as a part of American history is baffling to me. You are depriving students of the truth when you exclude certain topics from education.

I found that to be funny too.
In all seriousness though, I really enjoyed this panel of such diverse speakers who were able to respectfully and productively share and voice their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs with one another without it turning sour. What I really loved about this also is that everyone had the best interest of our societies children and next generations to come in mind. It is conversations like this that give me hope for the world we live in.
I believe financial literacy should be emphasized and taught more in the US education system. I’m not surprised it wasn’t a discussion point in this conversation but the more financial literate we are, the more options and choices we can make to how we want to live our life, and teach our kids to be the next generation of leaders in this country.

YES. Economics through all the grades
Because education is about indoctrination. That's why things are set up so that the average parents are too busy with work so they can't homeschool and take control of what their kids learn/believe. So the government can take care of it and mold the kids into the perfect money making machine.
The biggest obstacle to making good financial decisions are conflicts of interest. There's a massive conflict of interest in education because teachers are usually required to have advanced degrees that come from universities that are themselves run by people with advanced university degrees. Advanced degrees, as of the last few decades, require a high amount of student debt. Financially, it makes no sense at all to take on that much debt in order to qualify for a job that pays that little, so the pool of people who teach not only tends to exclude the financially literate (or at least anyone who prioritizes financial success) but it also tends to favor going into debt and pursuing careers that make no financial sense.
So I personally wouldn't trust most teachers to teach my kids financial literacy. If you hire someone to mow your lawn, and that person runs their own business, chances are high that person has a better grasp of finances than any randomly selected teacher.
As someone who works on foster care cases, I can assure you that it’s never a good idea to rely completely on parents to make the best decisions for their children. Those decisions need to be within reason and they need to be in collaboration with education professionals.
And the wider community
This is alarming. Leave your bias out of this conversation. Parents should have the choice. Don't use your bubble to make informed decisions for the rest of us.
I don’t think you critically evaluated what they were saying. Not every parent is a good parent let alone a reliable one. There are many parents that make terrible decisions for their children, parents should not get all rights to decide how their child should be raised because with that kind of logic it can lead to justification of abusive parenting methods and abuse of power.
@@Drowning_GirlJust something to think about, realistically anyone is capable of having children and therefore being a parent. Now think about how dumb you find the average person, and realize HALF of the population is dumber than that... I think parents absolutely should be involved in their child's education, but I don't think all parents are capable of making the BEST choices, especially with topics that they have no experience in, or have a particular bias. The more educated children are, the better our society as a whole will be, even if it's something the parents don't like or agree with such as gay marriage or transgenderism.
Just because there are some messed up parents, doesn’t mean the rights of all parents should be stripped.
Only those parents who show they make bad parenting choices should officials step in; we can’t just make a blanket decision like that for all parents.

This was a pretty good conversation, but I wish there was more discussion about academic performance. That is something we are struggling with as a country. The topic of education seems to always devolve into social issues. Some interesting topics would have been the role of homework and standardized testing and the issue of underperforming kids being passed in order to boost school ratings.
Thank you! Everyone in the comments is commending how 'respectful' this panel was, when ultimately it was just a debate around social politics, rather than topics that pertain specifically to education, such as homework and testing. They could have even talked about the accessibility of tertiary eduction and school fees, the privatisation of schooling and even school shootings.

Me too. The conversations about gender, sexuality, and CRT are important, but I was more focused on HOW were being taught less of what we're being taught. As a high schooler that is dual enrolled with a college, I see the discrepancies within our school system, and they're failing us. They're saying that oh we need to learn how to do reading writing and arithmetic, but no one is retaining any of it. We are just doing it to get a grade or a title, and we've been gaslit, guilt tripped, and manipulated our whole lives. I really wish we could have a more organic learning experience rather than soak up material, do home work, turn assignments, then take a test. It's not working and I speak for a lot of us when I say this.

As a school speech language pathologist, I wish there was someone who worked in special education on this as well. I think the aspects of special education were missed in this debate and that’s such a huge and important part of education as well.
VERY TRUE! That is a major variable left out on how school choice could be a benefit or a detriment to special needs. Personally I think it would be a benefit because you could get schools that focus on it rather than it be an afterthought.

I agree. I think that should be part of this discussion. As someone who had an IEP I don’t believe public school is the answer in many neighborhoods. The reason is because in many school districts without the proper staffing or great programs you are only as strong as your weakest student in those classes. I needed just a little extra time, the ability to take tests in a classroom alone and extra homework. Unfortunately they said the regular classes couldn’t accommodate that so they put me in special education classes. That held me back so much. There was no medium between the two classes and that hurt me so bad. I do understand that many schools have the resources to teach each student individually at their level, which is AMAZING. For the schools that don’t have that ability, if the parent is able to, I believe homeschooling or a private school that can accommodate is the best option. Some schools don’t even have the ability to have “special education” rooms and the children with behavioral problems get put into classrooms with the other children. I tutored in a 6th grade classroom that is like that. These children got all the attention and other children began to act out too or be stressed. The class took 20-30 minutes between subjects to calm down which means they lost vital teaching time.
I think this debate is more for the majority, as they wouldn't have enough time to delve into the very small parts of schools. Special education only makes up about 14% of the schools statewide, give or take.

I would want my kid taught by at least one teacher who is the complete opposite of me so they can learn more! Be more open minded and tolerant, and get more perspectives on the world we live in! There’s a lot to learn from people we know nothing about! Why have we lost that or don’t want that?!

@@Thisismyhandle8383 I can honestly say, my entire life all through elementary and high school, I never had a single teacher push any sort of value.. Some would discuss their beliefs, but honestly most teachers are afraid to even speak to one side or the other on any political issue due to the fear of backlash from parents and administration. I don't think that presenting a view that is in opposition to oneself is harmful though.
I am shocked that that not a single member of this panel addressed the most profound problem within the education system in the United States of America: Utter and complete lack of parental/guardian accountability for the infractions of students. The majority of students, k-12, are simply out of control, spoiled, petulant, rude, inconsiderate, and intellectually challenged. 🙄
I just commented this on another video about a student pepper spraying a teacher that took her phone that she was using to cheat. Lack of parenting and lack of consistent real world consequences or accountability create an out of control student population.

As a german student, i look at this with shock. The differences in cultures are so real and i gotta say i am thankful to live in germany, since we actually have a good and (mostly) working education without huge conflicts about what is taught and how it is taught.

the US is much younger than germany but does a better comprehensive job of teaching its history than a nation scared to venture out pre-unification of various german landers.
I graduated from a DOD school in Germany that gave a dual diploma if one was to qualify. I'm so glad to have had that opportunity.

I love this argument that we don’t trust parents to educate their kids. That’s 💯 true bc right now the majority of parents are sending their kids to school completely unprepared, without emotional regulation and executive functioning skills, and with an inability to grapple through problems. So no. You’re not raising your kids in a way that helps them be successful. Most kids are getting those skills at school.

The feminism panel left me w/ "PTSD"/jaded when it comes to Vice debates, so whenever one pops up I immediately read the comment section to discern if it went well or off the rails. So far it seems this one went well enough.
This convo is civil and respectful but some of the members are so incredibly uneducated on certain topics that it's hard to understand anything from their point of view. One of the conservatives doesn't understand a lot of the things that he doesn't think should be taught in schools. I know this is edited and there would have been more to the conversation but the rebuttals to his view of CRT and what indoctrination is, shows how these bubbles that they live in can be so damaging to our society. The failure to understand white privilege and how he disagrees to factual information blows my mind.

Every time I paused to disagree and have a discussion with myself about what someone said the next person who spoke said exactly what I just said out loud to myself. Im glad this panel actually had the balls to speak up against what some of the others were saying. This panel is exactly why ppl lean toward home schooling. You never know what type of teacher you will get. They are honestly HIT or MISSSS.

A problem is that parents have to spend a lot of time working for the system instead of being able to do stuff in their own surrounding and being able to manage. We used to have parents coming together and teaching their children.
1 full time job should be enougj to provide for a household. This is a problem. Im not saying only one person makes money, but both parents should be able to work 20 hours a week so they work 40 hours a week to provide for they family.
I had the pleasure of having Teacher Frambrini teach my son that year at Vincent Academy! He was very kind to me as a parent and taught advanced math to the students!
I had Sex Ed in the 5th grade. It was a week long curriculum that concluded with a parents night. Mothers with daughters and fathers with sons, we watched our own informational film and then had our own Q and A with our parent or guardian. There was a licensed health expert in the room the whole time to address any concerns or deeper questions.

I really wish they would have touched on bullying and the no tolerance policy. I would have loved to hear the teachers perspectives on it. Both of my children have faced bullying and both of my children have been punished for defending themselves from bullies who were physically threatening them. The no tolerance policy needs to have some common sense. We know a 12yr old girl who was just suspended for busting a kids lip while trying to stop him from throwing her down a flight of stairs. But because she hit him she got in trouble. It's becoming a huge issues in schools and with the increase of not just school shootings but suicides among middle and high school children it really needs to be addressed.
Great point. That's part of the reason why I said I homeschool. They just edited it conveniently to make it seem like I was saying to shield them from LGBT kids. When I said "to keep my kids away from YOUR bad kids" was actually more aligned with your point contextually. Seems they chopped it up to push an agenda to try to discredit me. It backfired.
We need to introduce combat sports and weight lifting in middle schools. These teach discipline, the importance of standing up for yourself and they build lots of confidence as participants see themselves progressing in them.

Teachers are too busy teaching kids LGBT stuff or white primacy stuff.
It will never change. A kid came up behind me and started choking me. I broke out of it and knocked him out. I got a week suspension and he got nothing but a giant black eye. A teacher watched the whole incident too. The teacher told the principal we were rough housing and that I took it to far.
What's shocking is that 9 adults are asked what is the reason for school and only 1 said to be literate.
They were really respectful, I love that.
I'm a trained Educator in Nigeria both in teaching and administration. I will really love to be in a panel like this just to rub minds.

I've seen a number of these Vice Debates, and I have to say THIS is probably the most civil and respectful of all. Congratulations, to you parents and educators for being such a great example of being civil, respectful, and authentic. If American society is filled by people of your kind of openness and respect, and you raise your children with this degree of respect and sincerity, then there is hope for the greatest country in the world.

But NOTHING was accomplished. And nothing of value was shared. You spent time listening to people who LOVE to hear themselves talk and regurgitate positions they've been fed. That's all it was. You could have sat there just as easily and brought as much to the table.

Vice does some solid reporting but this was pure theater. They were checking a box. What's unfortunate is that it appears that the comments are mostly positive and revolve around "respectful debate." It really speaks to an uninformed and lazy populous. As long as the surface is appealing there's no need to dig deeper. And that's as common on the "left" as it is on the "right." I got halfway through this, and was infuriated. They are focusing a very limited range of topics, and it just ended up coming to social issues. I wish they chose more ideas like standardized testing or common core or ones that involved less misinformation and were based on facts

Just because a child is attending school doesn’t mean the parents can’t educate alongside the school. Parents, in general, need to take a bigger role in the education of their own children. I also think it’s important for children to be introduced to other ideals from other people.

It’s the black and white mentality some people have where they perpetuate this belief that schools have absolute control over their children, and that they as parents are powerless to stop it. They act like the parent is completely removed from the educational process. That’s not the case at all if parents are involved and invested in their children’s education, and take the time to learn alongside them.
And some parents want to be the ones introducing their child to other ideas at an age the parents feel their child should be exposed to, if at all.
So true. Parents should take an active role in educating their children on topics or issues they will encounter. This day and age, social media or other school kids will teach kids about the world more than the parents. Parents that are tapped in will know that and take either a proactive approach to the issues or topics or will have to be in panicked reactive state when issues or topics arise. Some of the issues and topics of the world are not a matter of if the child will have to face it, but when.
im no completely disagreeing, i definitely belief parents need to be more involved and i wish mime were. but what about the children who dont have parents to be involved or are neglected by theirs, what happens to them?

Having finished this episode I have to be honest. That was in my opinion the best and most wholesome episode I've seen so far. Different opinions, respectful conversations and conclusions at the end where everyone seem to have benefitted from the talks. Certainly not an end I would have expected but one I'm actually even grateful for, because it builds hope in a better tomorrow.

I agree. This is the best VICE panel ever. It was actually balanced between left and right, which helped immensely. It really seemed like both sides agreed about what should be taught concerning race…a hopeful sign. Clearly, those on the left here don’t know how the powers that be have formulated CRT. It is extraordinarily toxic and divisive. And those on the right are just as naive, not seeing that much of the anti-CRT movement has out-and-out racist motivations.
It felt like, if left to their own devices, unencumbered with their respective leadership’s manipulations, these 8 could iron out a fairly decent curriculum on racial relations.
It was different on the sexual side of things. There, there was no common ground to speak of. Which is exactly what I would have expected. I don’t think there really is any genuine common ground that is discoverable. One side wants to inappropriately expose and indoctrinate kids from a very early age, and the other wants to inappropriately shelter them till they’re 35.
Vice is better than most will give credit. 90% of their material you wouldn’t find approached the same manner elsewhere.
Not everyone represented by each person here think like the person who represents them.

What I really liked about this episode is the respect and civility everyone showed towards one another. Everybody was free to state their opinion and actually listened, which is something that is becoming rarer and rarer by the day. Civil discourse fosters mutual understanding and helps depolarize our views

40:55 where he was saying that he wishes to see parents at the PTA meetings and such.. something like that wasn't possible for me where I am from a single-working-parent household. My dad pulled well over 50-60 hours a week working anyone from 4am-3pm, sometimes earlier and/or later. My dad would have to drop me off at my grandmother's in the middle of the night so my relatives could take me to school. Aside from my dad working long hours, he immigrated here from China and only get a partial 3rd grade education. He took some adult school here in the US to learn some English so he could get by. But PTA meetings for someone like him and many parents of friends and classmates from my generation/graduating class are all in a similar situation.
Going to a PTA meeting was by far a waste of time back then because they had other chores to do around the house or prepare for the next work day.
Like others have mentioned, the education system is due for a revamp. Many parents now, not all, have been born and raised in the States now and can afford to do much of the things our parents wished to do. And that is similar to much of every other aspect in the US. Things we wished we could do, or wished our parents could do back then- we can do now for our next generation.

My mom and dad taught us to never stop asking why when people give you information, always challenge what you hear, former your own opinions, and understand the facts and how they were proven. My wife and I have the same approach to our two kids and I'm happy that they are always searching for more information. I don't always have the answer FOR them but searching with them makes for some interesting conversations

Great Panel. One thing I think is really important and has not been brought up is there are lots of kids out there who see school as a safe haven, they literally rely on educators and their fellow students because of a toxic or abusive home.
So why not help those students individually? If the situation is that bad for them at home why not work to get those students out of the toxic situation? Isn't that better than having them for 6-8 hours a day 5 days a week only to have them return to the toxic situation every day?
What's your point?. They should keep going to public school ( if that's their parents' choice. ) but you can't force other parents to keep their kids in there bc your child needs an outlet and likes their teacher.

I'll say, if a child views school as a safe haven, that parent probably isn't prioritizing education planning or school choice in their plans. This is a valid issue, but I don't see it as a valid point regarding education choice conversation.

I agree! As someone who grew up in a toxic and abusive household and also fell through the cracks because I looked like I came from a "good" household, I think there should be time in there where kids are taught what abuse looks like, what is okay and not okay and the damaging effects of words and actions we as individuals and as groups can have on others, and what is unacceptable regardless of age or race or power dynamic. And then from there have a place for kids to find resources.
The trouble with me is that I was so isolated that I had no concept of what healthy relationships should look like, and how warped my perceptions were, to even articulate that there even WAS a problem, even though my behavior/actions/grades clearly reflected that, there was never anywhere to go with those issues.

So impressed with how respectful everyone was. I really would have struggled.
I knew a lot of homeschool kids growing up and they were weird as hell, socially stunted, and missed out on so many cool opportunities. I'm sure it doesn't always happen, but often that is true. Also homeschool is an easy way for abusive parents to hide their abuse, those kids might never be around a mandated reporter.
Also I'm a teacher, as is my husband and when we get homeschooled children that come to our school for the first time in their lives, they are far behind the other children.
This is just my experience.

I spend my childhood in Mexico and homeschooling isn’t a thing (or wasn’t back then.) honestly, I find hard to believe that someone can be able to school and educate someone on their own.

The one lady that said public schools are segregated failed to mention that schools in the United States are funded based on property taxes.
She also doesn't want the students to know WHY schools are so highly segregated.... but wants to use it as a talking point against the school system.
In nyc they spend 30k per pupil. N California is not far behind. White n Asian parents are more willing to send their kids to private school. In Nyc 92% of the of the highly competitive schools are attended by white and Asian. Hard work pays.

A lot of people's children NEED to have 8 hours separated from their parents.

We don't tell criminals that they get to grow and explore illegal behavior so they can be an individual and the legal system just takes a step back..no.....the boundaries of the law are already set and they abide or receive the consequences.
I'll be the same way with my children. Their individual self is not more important than the moral and ethical boundaries that were laid out for them before they were born or were developed to make their lives more profitable in the long run. Those boundaries are there for a reason, because they're effective. We don't tell kids not to smoke cigarettes because we hate them. But because it can potentially spare them from cancer and respiratory issues.

What a great debate: topic is very current; many viewpoints were calmly and eloquently expressed with respect; this is how politics and ideologies should be, with questions and answers; problems and the sources explored and possible options and resolutions openly discussed to see them down the longer road. The bad ideas will be discarded and we are more likely to build consensus around hopeful solutions to implement. Wish politicians would do more of this town hall open talk.
If we want our children to to brought up to be respectful, educated, and productive citizens, they need to see their teachers and parents having conversations like this. Learning from each other by actually listening. Not being afraid to speak their mind. Coming prepared with examples and evidence. Well done panel!

Expect when you look at the reality that alot is cut out of the video from this "debate". Whether or not you agree with a viewpoint any editing involved allows biases to leak through, these need to be raw and uncut to be a true debate.

I think it’s interesting the one woman said public school is the best space for all walks of life to come together, but I went to a private school K-12 and i had soooo many different kids in my classes. So I don’t think it’s just exclusive to public schools. But I also see how I can be biased only having gone to private school as a child too

As a Native American I wish that there was more talk and discussion on both sides about native history with race being taught in education. I would love to hear both sides
I’m a teacher and a parent. While I don’t teach history, I do know both of my kids have studied Native American history in middle school. It’s also being taught with a more realistic focus on the injustices. In high school, my son has learned about the systemic racism native Americans have faced (esp. reservations). I support all of this wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, no one wants to talk about the real problems facing our public schools today that have little to do with race, religion & gender identity.
Bub, the average Anerican is too busy focusing on his or herself to the point where they completely forget that you exist, so what makes you think that they'll ever make Native history a mainstream subject in U.S public schools? Core base studies have been drastically altered to the point of literally building the foundation of education on quick sand.
They taught me about it in school, extensively. I still gain more definition of the word "genocide" from a Google search. I was taught how beautiful the life your ancestors lived truly was. When it comes to the conversation of homeschooling and how the majority of public figures like "founding fathers" were homescheeld or only went to school until third grade: an important part of the narrative that was left out was how nascent pubic education is and the requirements that you send your children to school and don't just assimilate them into the workforce. The history of public education is fresh and important to learn, esepically currently when there seems to be an intense dismantling of the public education sphere. Great video with different persepctives.

I think what's being overlooked here is that everyone is looking at what they are teaching from an adult perspective. Kids absorb and perceive information in such a different way. Misunderstanding happen far more in the education process, especially in elementary school

I remember as a child, having parents be part of the classroom a few times a year. Particularly when it came to class parties and fun events. Parents would bring goodies and gifts for us students. Some parents did this for their own children when it came to birthdays etc. Others did this for the emotional offering of support to the students in my class because they were sympathetic and empathetic of certain kids' home lives. Having healthy parent role models in the classroom is a healthy thing and I don't see a problem with it.
The problem is parents don't even show up nowadays. They get angry when you even ask them to.
I like that this was a largely productive conversation. It makes me happy for the future.
