    Hey, so I should probably give a little explanation as to where I've been. This channel is really important to me, but so is food. My current full-time job is as a video editor, so it's difficult to do a full day of video editing for work and then get motivated to video edit for the channel.
    This series is a way of narrowing the scope and getting things done quicker. Even the topics are suggested by you, the viewers, rather than me. This doesn't mean longer vids are off the table, but I do need to apologise that I kept making promises I couldn't keep on Twitter.
    For now, the ways to submit myths are curiouscat and Twitter, but I'm open to other methods of anonymous "Suggestion Box" style inputs. I won't be responding to suggestions, but I read all of them. And if you could phrase the myth as a statement, that really helps too.
    (Long comment sorry)
    I also wanted to ask about format. For me, I like the idea of having the myth be "busted", "plausible" or "confirmed" in the first couple minutes and using the rest to explain why, and the context around it. I wanted to see if other people like this idea or if they'd rather see that at the end.
    Thanks!

      I like the idea, but as you've said, busting myths requires you to have "myths" to begin with, so I hope you can get some. If not, you may have to resort to taking questions people might have about anime or parts of anime that are poorly understood (or that casuals may not even notice) and phrasing them in the form of a myth. People might ask, "Why did the dub phrase that line so strangely or completely change from the sub?" Where the answer is (often) that it was the best way they could phrase the translated dialogue to fit the cut so as not to ruin the pacing of the scene. It's hard to make that a myth, but maybe something like "Poorly phrased dialogue in dubs means it's a bad translation."
      As for the Busted/Confirmed/Plausible terminology, while I love Mythbusters as much as the next guy, and putting it in the first couple minutes is a fine idea, I don't think that terminology fits when you're essentially performing a fact-check rather than making tests and analyzing data. As such, I think it would be better to emulate the scale used by a fact-checking organization like Politifact: True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False, and False. Putting the scale in the thumbnail as the quick answer to the title might entice more clicks from viewers, as they may have already learned something just from "What, that's only half true? What am I missing?"
      I fully support your efforts to keep yourself fed. It's better for the channel to lay silent than for you to damage your mental well-being by forcing yourself to make content for it. The quality would suffer if you tried in that state anyway. In any case, glad to see you uploading again.

      Budget definately helps but what really works in making an anime look good consistently is scheduling. Many assume ufotable as a bigger budget than most anime studios due to their production quality but that's not the case. They're just really passionate and have schedules that don't make animators wanna pull their teeth out.

Maybe I'm an idiot without common sense, but can someone please talk about how exactly budget affects the animation quality? Even a superficial explanation would work.

    • @SEGAmastergirl
      @SEGAmastergirl 4 года назад +6

      @@mistbornlazarus2611 Oh you mean the sakuga shot? I think that's more of people thinking that because something looks really good that it means they must've had more money. I could be wrong on this but I think anime animators are paid by scenes completed and not frame count. I think that makes things more impressive because of all the effort put forth just to make something look really cool when you might not even get paid extra for it.

    • @Knoloaify
      @Knoloaify 4 года назад +11

      @@mistbornlazarus2611 The role of budget is to fund the production of the anime until the deadline. So the basic idea is that having a huge budget means you can work on the production for longer resulting in a better product, however you can have a mismatch between the deadline and the budget. As an example, God Eater and SNK season 1 was famous for having production problems, resulting in episodes where a LOT of animators had to be hired at the last moment in order to finish the episode in time. This naturally inflates the budget, however, it doesn't necessarily improve quality since the animators still have to meet a very short deadline.
      On the other side, Kyoto Animation has productions with a normal to a low number of animators per episodes but still with great animation all the while working on a normal budget. That's because of the animator's individual skill (a single very skilled animator can almost carry a production by himself) and effective production management.
      Essentially, time = money. However, there are a ton of ways to lose or gain time on a production, unskilled staff, servers going down too often, co-production studios not being able to keep up, bad communication (this is especially bad with freelance animators, because if a supervisor or an assistant has a question he can't just walk up to him), deadline too short, overly ambitious director, staff leaving, etc. So in the grand scheme of things, the budget does affect quality, along with a ton of other factors.
      It's not a mystery that a lot of studios with good animation are also studios with a lot of in-house animators, meanwhile, A-1 pictures, the most hit & miss studio out there, have a skeleton staff and rely almost exclusively on freelancers.

    • @Knoloaify
      @Knoloaify 2 года назад

      @@hatersgonnahateplayersgonn2198 First off: You don't need to be taught animation. If you can work well on your own you can absolutely "study" on your own and join communities on the net (I'm talking about forums specialized in animation such as Catsuka) to share your work and receive advice from professionals. From there you can make a Demoreel with your animated works and show that to employers.
      I guess online classes would be a good complement to that although I have no idea about those as I've never met an animator who took online classes (usually they come from an animation school).
      I didn't go to a "college" although I did go to an animation school. What these bring you is a good environment to push yourself to work and learn as well as connections to professional studios. Which can be quite important.
      Be careful about whether or not the formation is in a college/university or a private school as the former are often more oriented toward artistry than actually learning the ropes of the trade. Although I don't know if that dichotomy exists in your country.

    Anyway, painting or drawing on a 3d model or on a short made by actual actor is an old tecnique, and there is nothing bad on that.
    It is to keep movement more believable. Disney did it a lot and even showed how things are done.
    There is one anime I remember is painted on an actual movie, but it wasn't that good (they just redrew the same faces and the same bodies they were animating, creating an uncanny valley effect)
    Then there are well done CGI anime like Land of the lustrous and Bubuki Buranki (the second may not have a good story, i never saw all episodes, but is undenieable that the CGI is great, those aren't drawing but actual 3d models rendered as if they're drawings), and horrible CGI like the ones in Berserk.
    As far as i know, most anime are done traditionally. Just colours are done on a computer.

    A fine video. As soon as I saw that tweet I went on a mini-rant inside my own head that basically summed up what you then went on to explain in a really understandable way. In all visual works, reference is key. That's something non-animators need to understand, and something even animators need to be reminded of so they don't fall into the trap of feeling like they're not good enough because they have to cross-reference their work with a source. Everyone does it, it's the only way to stay true to what you're trying to accomplish.
    Let's not forget that before 3D became so readily available, many great animations from all around the world used real life footage as reference. Sometimes bespoke footage recorded for the specific project, sometimes a creatively assembled montage of scenes from existing live action movies... This is still just that, but in a way that lets the creators inject even more of their own vision into the work without being held back by the logistics of real work filming. Well, they obviously still do that, when the animation calls for it... Can't get more realistic than real life, after all.
    I ramble. Good video!

    I don't work in this part of the pipeline but I'm almost certain the entire point of the 3D Yuri on Ice reference was for the camera move of the 3D rendered background. The 3D figure skater is there for reference of where the animator should put the character during the camera move. I'm sure the animators have other references from multiple camera angles that they're looking at over the previz 3D figure skater.

  • @MikachuAi
    @MikachuAi 4 года назад

    The 2d animators that get the 3D reference are still amazingly talented most people have no idea how hard it is to imagine the exact position every strand of hair should be in at every millisecond, let alone these super complex body movements, live footage can’t be traced properly too because the camera isn’t perfect so you would have to draw the camera movements rather than do camera after animation which will mess up background timing and placement unless that is also drawing simultaneous with the movement. Basically 3D has helped animation have more dynamic camera movement and accurate lighting reference as well as more complex movements where as before it’s nearly impossible to make those up even the most talented artists would struggle. I’m currently a game art student and I am working with 3D but I want to learn to make anime and discover the 2D process

    I personally love 2D animation and 3D animation equally. They can create amazing things separately and together. Both have their ups and downs.
    We will always have bad 2D and 3D stuff like Berserk 16/17 (3D), Ex-Arm (3D), Tesla Note (3D), Overlord Season 3 (2D/3D), High Guardian Spice (2D), Nanatsu no Taizai Season 3 (2D) and the start of DB: Super (2D).
    However we will always have masterpieces from both like Gantz: 0 (3D), Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (3D), Beastars (3D), Land of the Lustrous (3D), Akira (2D), Ghost in the Shell (2D) and Spirited Away (2D).
    In the end, i will always love animation in general. No matter what kind of art style 😊👍

    I would argue Blame, Revisions, is bad CG anime. Both shows goal is to convey the illusion of 2D anime but fails.
    1nd failing at animation timing both shows are run on two's and third's but 2d animation timing is very
    specific. these two 3D shows have a very consistent timing, which comes across very choppy.
    2nd lack of stretch and squash, anime is very subtle with stretch and squash. But it's there whatever fans notice it or not.
    Blame, Revisions lack this animation principle the character models doesn't break.
    And third a lack of animation smears.

    • @StudioArtFX
      @StudioArtFX 4 года назад +1

      Good points, but I still kinda liked BLAME! I think it was the best Polygon had done to that date. The problem is that many CG shows don't get that 2D work isn't just cut the frame rate in half or thirds. They mix it up, and you can find shots that are 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, and so on...

    CG assisted animation has been around since the early 80s. Rotoscoping was one of the first forms of animation in general.
    I missed the tweet and the reactions. But just looking at the shots presented from Yuri. It makes me wonder if he really saw what was there. Because the 3D model that was in the previz was basically just a still model not moving much at all. Mainly rotation and position was there. All the expressive movements and bending was in the 2D animation layer probably translated from the video footage. So in all even if the claim was true, it was a very poor choice of example.
    But yeah, the horse is dead and there's no point in me beating it further.
    My favourite example of cg anime shots done right is still the first episode of Kill la Kill. And it really shows why most full CG shows falter. Because... Doing it right takes just as much time in CG as in 2D. And since the money men mainly choose CG for cost savings they don't want to put in the time (meaning money) that is needed and we end up with uncomfortably stiff and deadeyed puppets.

    • @heinewittgenstein3957
      @heinewittgenstein3957 4 года назад +1

      The number of Key Animators often means that studios will spend more money on Key Animators, 2nd Key animators, Supervisors etc. While it means more people which people often think it's better, that will mean the studio is struggling with its anime schedule. I think the term "Too many cooks spoil the broth." Is the best term for it.
      On "if more animators mean bad" basically Anime Studios are trying to finish the anime episode or such as fast as they can that equals unhealthy production. Just note more animators doesn't mean better animation it might mean slightly more decent looking art. Even if there are a lot of animators on board doesn't mean the anime will be great I believe Dragon Ball Super Episode 27 is a great example of that.

    • @Meidaneh_Shush

      People are very defensive of 2D animation because many people (who also enjoyed 2D productions) feel like they are going to be seen as old fasion or childish for choosing to prefer 2D. Personally I prefer 2D in television and movies because it flows so nicely but I like 3D a lot too. I don't like how everytime something can be done faster they abandon the old method for the sake of time reduction. Lazy 3D is horrible.
      And "3D allow for much more artistic freedom" is false. A pencil and paper can provide instant creativity and freedom while a 3D model can only be used once and needs modification if it wants to take others shapes. So both sides have their downsides

    I rather much prefer 3D to stay as 3D, with high framerate smooth dynamic animation, and not trying to imitate 2D, which often results in clunky framerate and awkward animation. Yes, I know many people love Arc System Work's Guilty Gear and DB FighterZ animation, but whenever the special attack cutscenes happen, the framerate really take me out of the experience since I can tell it's still CG and seeing it trying to be like the hand-drawn anime just feel weird. The new Guilty Gear trailer seems to have smoother animation, though.
    I don't know, I just want all CG anime to have smooth animation all the way instead of having smooth framerate during action and then switch back to low framerate.

      Kratos oh I don’t disagree man, the work is definitely great though i’m just talking about what they used to one-up themselves. Oh and the key frame count is kind of the same as in the first game, only from as far as i saw, they seem to have upped the exposure of the frames. So in one instance for example. they used 12-16 fps and in some parts of the closeups 22-28 fps... also the parallax scrolling helps convey movement without actually animating character movement..

    No, most anime is drawn 2d digitally but does not use 3d models and sometimes it's still drawn analogous and or hybrid of the 2. But the fate series use rough 3d models for there animations and then draw over it leaving the 2d
