Hey Joshua, you should start a series called "But Simple" where you simplify extravagant dishes so regular home cooks can make them at home without spending the entire day in the kitchen. Love your stuff, keep it up!
The Best Idea
pls
This would be so perfect.
That's impossible Josh only knows how to be extra.
Yep I second (or 6th or 7th) this. doesn't matter, it's a good idea.
Man said it costs $1.50 to make, then pulls out $50 of meat
he said its 1.50 per serving, i hope you've become more coherent over the last 2 years
@@whipwalka That's still more than 1 dollar.
@@thesomethingandsomething9823 bro if you cant spare 50 cents for a hotdog idk how you are alive in this economy
@@whipwalkaHey, I never said I couldn't do that.
Wrap your head around this… it’s for the algorithm/views! No way! Crazy right? He rounded down so that he would (via the video) be more successful! I know this is hard for some people to come to on their own, but someday I believe you will be able to. @@thesomethingandsomething9823
Those buns look amazing. Would be great for some lobster rolls.
I’m not wearing my glasses, so when i first clicked i though this was a Lobster Roll video lol
@@faisalaldahlawi6560 lol same
They're New England Hot Dog Rolls. They're for hot dogs. They work well for lobster rolls too.
@@mackal and as somebody from New England now in the midwest, its nice to see a simple recipe for them because I can't buy them here and well..... there is no substitution lol
@@larryarcher8533 Try near the seafood. I was discussing them with someone that lives outside of NE when I learned about this being a thing and he said they sell them with the seafood where he lives :P
I would consider this "but better" bc sure overall the price can be cheaper, but it's balanced out by the amount of time one needs to take to make the recipe (even just the sausage itself) let alone the specific "optional" instruments listed. I think time needs to be included on "cheaper" because it's not just money that goes into cooking but also time/patience
the real but cheaper is to get the hotdogs at Costco and then make your own toppings lol
Imagine doing this in a batch and freezing.... It's fine where it is.
Work smarter, not harder.
Also consider hotdogs are made by the billion already and so are buns there's. Absolutely fuck all stopping them not filling it up with chemical bullshit. Using spices like he does here, they just don't because capitalists are greedy c**ts
So make your own channel doing a proper but cheaper then
@@ericingham3343 Or... (and hear me out on this one) OR, you *could* let people leave constructive criticism and feedback in an open comment forum on the channel who's owner actually takes comments like this into consideration. Instead of expecting everyone who suggests a change do it themselves.

At one point, I am sure that Josh will Ask us to breed the animals we cook for extra flavour
"So first you want to incubate your chicken egg for 20 to 21 days"
”Im serious about this. This isnt something you skip”
No you idiot! You just killed the last of the breeding stock!!!!
Funny stuff man!
Josh, please hear me out. I love to cook just as much as I love to eat good food. I've even started making some videos of my own, in a different style, to share my food with the world. Please try this. The absolute best way to cook a hot dog is to deep fry it! Trust me. It only works with natural casing hot dogs but the snap is absolutely unreal. Please, I know you have leftover dogs. Do it!
I love how Kendrick is just trying to live his life and Josh tries everything ti bring him onscreen and make life difficult 😂
Kendrick was looking like he was having an existential crisis over that dog at the end and like he wasn’t even mad about it. Hey, you might get drug onscreen, but there’s free food, and it’s incredible.
I mean Josh gives the people what they want.... More Kendrick.
wait my name is Kendrick wth
I’ll would buy overpriced hotdogs from Whole Foods but make Josh’s bun recipe! ❤️
His recipes are getting more impossible to replicate xD
quality of his videos is getting worse lately
Good point. While fun to watch these are no longer remotely practical for the average home cook.
When he messes with something so industrialized as hot dogs it's hard to have everything you need to imitate them, sadly :(.
Yeah I came here to see if they would save money but this is definitely not for the time cruncher or penny pincher. I’m about to unsubscribe here in a minute if it doesn’t improve and actually does what the title suggest.

He's making hotdogs...what could he possibly do to speed up the sausage-making process? Same with the buns. Just buy hotdogs from the store of you're that bothered, they're not that expensive.
seriously, who is going to go to these lengths for a hot dog. Are you really going to spend the day cooking to then take the hotdogs out with you, no you are going to pay for a hotdog whilst you are out. Nice idea but then you completely lost the purpose of your own video
This was more a "But Better" imo. I mean it's cheaper if you don't count your time plus about 2000 bucks of equipment. Snarky comments aside, I love cooking, I will definately try this out!
Lol. This video drove me nuts. Who has hours and hours to make a hot dog? Absolutely ridiculous and Im saying this as a fan.
So much this! Just even the time investment. Lets take two days to make a hotdog.
It's only "But Cheaper" if you compare it to super inflated prices at a sports stadium.
And he didn't even make his own mayo, ketchup, and mustard. I mean after all that effort... lol.
And it's only cheaper if you are making an industrial quantity of hot dogs.
The video was fun and interesting to watch but no one's going to make this.
Thank you for the video. We are on a tight budget, so this is quite impossible to make.
Yo, this is a great way to use up my leftover sheep intestines, Prague seasoning #2, hotdog emulsifying powder, sausage stuffing attachment and meat grinder. Thanks!
Man has jokes 😂
Geezuz wept
i can’t tell if this is sarcastic or not and because of that this is hilarious
How'd they turn out?
😂😂😂😂😂
The only thing that gets me about this series is that it’s but cheaper, and he typically uses his most expensive tools for the *flex*, hence defeating the purpose of “but cheaper.” No big deal tho, everything always looks delicious and I would pay insane amounts of money to eat something made by chef 👨🍳 joshie

I get what you're saying but in reality it cost like 100× more than a 1.46 to get everything and then make it
The inclusion of the crew is fire. Their reactions make it more real as the audience can't be there. They seem pretty honest about it all too
I just found you and had nightmares all night of you making super super cheesy garlic bread but it was terrifying 😂
I have no doubt this tastes amazing, it looks fantastic. However, I have nowhere near the time or energy to do this entire thing from start to finish. I'll just pay the extra $0.50 and go to Costco lol 😅
I completely agree, Josh does get a little overboard with these, but hey! That's why we watch him, isn't it? I mean, if you have access to a good bakery and butchers (or are fine with whatever your local store has), you can cut down the prep time by like 90%.
@@xyrthor 💯 I love these because I trust Josh's judgment and while some things I will never make myself, I like knowing what the premium standard is so I can make informed choices when I buy things like sausages or bread in the store.
Hey he said cheap not quick! Gotta put in some work to make up for the money saved.

I just always want to give Kendrick a hug in the least creepy way!
Anything bought in massive bulk - if bulk enough - will always be cheaper than what you usually buy for a family serving. This series is inherently flawed... and impossible for the average home cook to replicate, I might add.
I'm a meat cutter at Publix (grocery store in S.E. US) we will grind pork shoulder and chuck roast and any other raw meat we sell at no cost if you ask. I'm sure many grocery stores will do it for you.
Side note if you apply the typical multiplier of 3x for business expenses most of the food service industry uses, your "but cheaper" comes up to nearly $6. So it makes sense for a business to have to charge $6
I love how Joshua's crew is so great at acting out additional comedic stunts, they seem like a great team. And I just freakin' love Kendrick.
You made a cheap food sound expensive, then made the cheap food expensive and made it sound cheap.
I'm honestly impressed. The food looks pretty though
Bruh this is litterally the most expensive hot dog i have ever seen😂😂 looks good though
hi from Mexico!!! Thanks for this!! If you make them yourself you know exactly what you're getting! :-D We make creative vids on numerous subjects
The reality is is this will come to about 10$ a serving for like 4 servings and you end up with about 50$ ingredients you'll never use ever again. Still cool tho but definitely not cheaper.
that's half of his vids lately, his recipes are becoming even less practical over time. it's why i go to other creators for actual recipes I plan on making

I love that, in order to make this the way Josh did, you have to count on Barter with a butcher, as well as hundreds of dollars in equipment. Oh, and you have to make 80+ hot dogs to get the price just right. Fun to watch, though, lol.
It's not that expensive really. It's $400.... like... how much is your iPhone or android smart phone? How much is your car? How much is your mortgage? Or rent payment? Like... honestly, put into perspective of all of the things we buy, it isn't that much money. Especially considering that it's a one time purchase, not like a car or a phone or laptop or iPad etc. That is VERY expensive and we all pay extra in interest for all of these things. And your complaining about a kitchenaid that's a little less than a flat screen TV? That most of us have multiple of.... I mean... I do understand, it's NOT cheap. But, considering everything else out for sale on thr market right now, I mean the God dang thing is cheaper an an xbox!!! Come on people. It's not thay expensive!!! You pay more for a PS5! Etc. For reals.... like.... perspective! That is all.

Hi, if you like cooking, feel free to check out my easy recipes ;-)
facts
Or money, to be honest. Dude used the most expensive methods for a series called "but cheaper". what a fucking sham
I mean.... You spend a couple of hours, and you get, easily, a few months, to a year's worth of hot dogs... Or a few summer party's worth.
Being realistic, if you've already got the grinder out, you could, feasibly, take a day, and have all the cased, meaty goodness you could ever need, for that same span...
@@andrewamann2821 cool 👍 thanks for the advice.
My $1 Gourmet Hotdog is looking a-lot different then Joshs... .50 cents for some crappy azz Bar-S brand Hot dogs & $1.45 for a pack of hot dog buns....
I am already over $1 lol. Let alone, a meat grinder, fresh pork shoulder, binder flower from a butcher, fresh sheep casing I totally have in my fridge... this is not even close to $1 even if your some how separated it lol XD That hot dog looks good though!
I'd rather spend $20 on a stadium hotdog than put myself through this.
It isn't even a hard recipe. Maybe the sausages are, but you can just buy sausage and make everything else to save money.
come to san francisco that’s how much they are here 😩
murrica, if it were up to me, id triple the charge
It's certainly better, but theirs probably has a lower cost, and they still sell it for $6-8 because their food cost is around 10-20%.
Turns out the reason we pay for hot dogs is the price of the equipment and expertise to make them NOT the ingredients. I love cooking at home but I'm not gonna be making my own sausage lol.
oh wow you just understood how every single artisan profession makes their money
Josh did say you could buy store bought instead of making your own. It is still way cheaper
Kendrick's face at 7:36 of eating pure humble pie is so good.
I think there should be a series for college students who only really have access to the mini-fridge and microwave in their dorms. I didn't have access to a full kitchen until my senior year of college.
Edit: To make it clear, my school also didn't have a food court. You were completely on your own for food.
I mean, what people living in a dorm even have a cutting board and a knife? And if for some reason you do, you have to awkwardly cut on your desk. You don’t have spices, and you don’t have room for much of a pantry or condiments. And based on how Josh does videos, you’ll be given recipes with ingredients you’ll use once or twice before you hit the expiration date. And do you want those things crowding your fridge or pantry space when you have so little in the first place?
I support the idea out of pure absurdity and how much it will crush Josh’s soul to have a microwave and mini fridge as his only appliance options.
But if we’re being realistic, just eat your food court and your ramen and be happy.
@@seanmatthewking Yeah um…we didn't have a food court either so there goes that. My school owned a "cafe" that didn't serve full meals and it was a train ride away. And to answer your questions, yes actually. You do awkwardly make your food at your desk. Maybe not the microwave as his only appliance but to use things that someone would have in a dorm. Hell, I even used an iron and tin foil to make a quesadilla before and it was probably one of the best cheap meals I've had. No, I didn't have a cutting board but I did have a knife and a plate to cut things with. As far as space, I had my bed lofted for the majority of my time living there so storage wasn't really an issue as far as things like spices and ingredients that don't expire fast. As for other things, I got everything in 1-3 serving sizes so nothing ever went bad.
Again, about space, you can make it work. I dormed with 3 people and shared a bedroom. You can find ways to maximize space.
You get really crafty with how you do things in college when you don't have any other options. Nothing stopped me from being able to make full meals with what little I had to work with. It's all about creativity.
Edit: also, to your comment about ramen, yeah, no. I tried that along with a lot of other instant food my freshman year then ended up with high cholesterol and heart problems fairly fast. I didn't have a choice but to eat full and healthier meals. Again, when there's no option, you make it work.
2nd Edit: last thing, when I transferred schools to one that had a kitchen (still no food court) for the people in the dorm to use, it was two refrigerators for ~450 people to use so… yeah
@ I have learned to make S O many things in the microwave, and while I do prefer full kitchens, you just can't help but make do. Or...
"Settle" and be happy 👀 have nothing and be happy... Sounds familiar. Ew.
He wouldn't be able to do it bc he's so out of touch with broke people. The prices in his But Cheaper videos are always kinda sketchy and he makes recipes for people with loads of free time.
Damn that college sounds like a shit hole.
My lord, mouth is watering for some of Josh's double glizzy action
0:03 me when me when your mom me when
For a series called “but cheaper” this one really fails at the point of the challenge. The whole goal behind this is to make something more accessible and affordable, and the time and equipment needed for this makes it really unrealistic for the average home cook to consider. Please consider how you are using specialized equipment and way more time than the average home cook on a budget can afford.
Josh, I am once again begging you to go to Iceland, try their hot dogs, and teach us how to make them. They are the best in the world.
@Jacko Sargs They're the best I've ever had that's for sure.
JUST SAY THE ACTUAL COST, CLOWN
I remember Aramark selling hot dogs for $1 at the Royals game. The hot dogs were rotten and the buns were moldy. They're statement after the game stated, "What do you expect for $1?" I expect what you made Josh!
From my one and only experience with their coffee, I think a more accurate statement would have been "What do you expect from Aramark?"
I regularly get hot dogs from Sheetz. They’re $1 each for 2. They’re a little small, but damn if they don’t hit the “I want fast food hotdogs and pay very little” feeling.
@@johnbuscher unfortunately some people don't have a Sheetz or even know what that is.
I'm sad for those people because Sheetz prices really can't be beat 🙏🙏
I don’t expect good quality food for $1 but I do expect *edible* food when it’s being served in a public place
You have a point, but nobody is going to serve you anything good for a dollar. I’m sorry lmfao. But they shouldn’t sell mostly and rotten food.
this is NOT but cheaper, but the thumbnail Is mouth watering. ill still stick with a pack of turkey ball parks cause like i said this is not cheaper. period. how about some bundt pan recipes?
I doubt I'll ever make my own hotdogs from scratch but I'm glad a straightforward tutorial like this exists in case I ever get the urge to go big and buy a grinder with attachments. Good stuff.
Personally as an onion fan, I'd add the onion & mix into the cucumber mix after having squeezed the cucumber, so as not to ring out much of the onion potency. A small difference, but still one well worth considering for that onion potency to remain a bit more after cooking them in the relish. 🥒
Also after going all out on this "but cheaper (but not cheaper)," I better get a butter bun, lol; butter isn't that expensive that we would have to exclude the brushing from the bun. 🐄
Also also, I wholeheartedly think 2 dogs 🐕 🐕 is 1 dog 🐕 too many per bun. You gotta enjoy all the different flavor nuances while keeping the calorie count at a "don't kill you" level. Especially since they're eaten so quickly that people usually have 2 separately anyhow, as they're eaten too quickly to be full.
Stay healthy and don't kill your wallet as well everyone! (Also rest in peace, burned hot dog bun side. 🌭 )
A l s o, needless to say as your editing team said it themselves, a blade of any kind in the mouth is very very life threateningly dangerous. 😰
I like how this one was like "okay, so you do have to own the things to make sausages, so.... anyway, we made the episode so here you go!"
Not using a hotdog as a prime excuse to eat some high quality spicy brown mustard is blasphemy. Also grinding your own dogs is a waste of time when you can just buy them on the cheap and spend the extra time consuming more aforementioned mustard.
I wish I was a millionaire so I could hire him to be my personal chef 👨🍳 😂

After watching most of your videos, I started asking for certain appliances for Christmas present and Birthday. Thank you because I got what I wanted. I received a stand mixer for Christmas (2022) but it's not Kitchen Aid. I asked for a Meat Grinder for my Birthday (March 31 2023) & I am waiting for it as I type (this after 3 hours on the phone yesterday with Amazon Canada) I cannot wait to make this. I am excited! This one was more of a "but better" than cheaper. The idea with making the buns is good tho and indeed simple and can be cheap, same with the pickled stuff and onions. The dog itself, not so much. There are also non intestine casings made of collagen that are cheep, easy to source online (look for sausage casings, they should come up), and last approximately forever if kept dry.
Hand grinders are cheap and effective. Just remember to keep the meat cold; almost but not quite frozen is best.
And, finally, a zip top bag with either a wide piping tip or, if not, a clean (preferably new and unused) syringe with the top cut off can be used to fill the sausages, albeit slowly enough you may want to cut the recipe down to a 10-15 batch.
You could actually buy the same amount of meat, grind it all, split it into batches and make other types of sausage or some amazing burger meat with the rest. If the meat you bought came to the store never frozen, you can split the ground meat up and freeze it in a size convenient for you (most people like 1 lbs portions if they have multiple people to feed). If you got pre-frozen meat, or the store got it frozen and thawed it, cook the meat into the dish you want before freezing.
I used to work at a butcher shop and actually got certified as a butcher here in the USA. I loved helping customers when they came in, especially those who wanted to try things like this but just didn’t have the kind of money to buy all the special equipment. So, all these ideas are tried and tested. Good luck!
Next time I go to a ball game, I will bring my own hot dogs. Thanks Josh!!
