The amount of time Max got free meals from Vietnamese local street restaurant tells you a lot about him, not just about Vietnamese people. Max has so much merit and good karma and social credit living in Vietnam. As a Buddhist, I truly believe this was the case for Max. When people see the cuteness and glow in your aura, your life become much much easier. Not everyone can get this kind of treatment, and I admit I'm not as charismatic as Max to achieve this even if I bring a camera to review a restaurant. I lived in Vietnam long enough (basically my whole childhood) to notice the pattern. It's about your face and yourself. Sometimes when the owner simply likes you and finds you cute (not the attraction kind of cute), they might as well just go ahead and treat you as their family members and give you free stuffs, because they hope to see you come back.
Now this part is about Vietnamese people, and I'm deeply proud to say when we are fond of someone, we care more about sentiment than our own business profit. If I like you and appreciate our friendship, giving you a free meal is worth it. I've been given free meals before from different owners, mostly they are middle aged or senior people. I didn't bring a camera or review anything, we just simply had conversations and we enjoyed the connection. When I was done eating, we still kept on talking, then when I was about to head out, I asked to pay for my meal. They took me by surprise and said "don't worry about it, it's on me". I did not intend to chat with them to get a free meal. I was planning to pay as usual. But that's how Vietnam works for you. It's either you get a free meal after forming a good friendship with the owner, or you will almost always get a discount. Just don't intentionally do this hoping to get a free meal, it might not work. Just be genuine and detach from the outcome. Don't expect anything or you will get disappointed.
Then this is where Vietnam becomes very unique when the customer ask to pay more because the owner is way too kind. And it's end up becoming the "tug of war", owner and customer fights over a bill. It's just so wholesome. And you don't even have to be a foreigner or food reviewer.
Owner: "It's alright. I got it. You're good".
Customer: "No, don't do that. Please let me pay".
It's the hospitality. Imagine owner charging less and customer asking to pay more in the U.S (or should I say, a environment where people focus heavily on making a profit). Well I guess there is a thing called tips. I forgot to say. Perhaps you would almost only find this kind of hospitality in home/family business, or in sub-urban, rural areas. When entering a corporate setting, maybe I wouldn't expect to get free meals, unless, again, I'm able to form a good connection to the owner. The employees cannot make decisions on their own.
I've gone astray and gone so far from the main topic. Anyway.
In this case, I'm aware that Max could be given free meal because they think he's advertising for them, but no matter what people say, I like to believe in my theory that it's really something about Max. Max is smiling and acting cute and polite (not the general/social kind of cute and polite, it's the cultural/Vietnamese kind of cute and polite). Max uses the right words "Dạ" when talking to the elders (dì, cô, bà), that is that kind of polite. As if Max was raised in Vietnam.

Anyway. That's about it.

A foreign youtuber who can talk a bit of Vietnamese vlogging his meals is free advertising. Some free meal is not big of a deal compare to that, and he can earn some money, or at least views and subscribers on his videos. That's fair and square

Max giỏi lắm , biết ba rọi là ba chỉ luôn . Max hỏi bánh mì hấp là gốc ở đâu , để cô góp y nha . Ngày xưa khi mua bánh mì về ăn không hết , nó bị cứng , vì tiết kiệm không muốn bỏ đi , người miền Nam ( nói chung tức là người miền Tây , miền Đông luôn ) thường hấp lại cho bánh mềm và cho thêm thịt bằm , mỡ hành lên cho thơm ngon , rồi từ đó nó trở thành một món ăn chơi quen thuộc . Bánh mì chiên tôm cũng vậy . Hồi còn nhỏ , nhà cô hay làm món này ăn sáng lắm 😄🤗.
Hôm nào mình ghé ăn thử xem !

That's Vietnamese hospitality for you. They can be very generous and it's hard to say "no" even though you wanna support their business. I've never had Banh Mi Hap and I live in the OC where we have a huge Vietnamese population and Little Saigon area. I gotta Yelp it and see if there is a Banh Mi Hap in Little Saigon now!!

Bánh mì hấp có mặt từ trước Giải phóng rồi. Ngày xưa mỗi khi đám giỗ sẽ dư lại bánh mì rất nhiều. Gia đình sẽ để dành lại. Khi nào muốn ăn thì đem bánh mì ra hấp lại. Nhân ăn kèm với bánh mì hấp có 2 loại: bì hoặc thịt bò xay xào chung với củ sắn xắt hạt lựu hoặc ăn cùng lúc 2 loại nhân. Bỏ thêm mỡ hành, hành phi và đậu phộng. Khi ăn ta gắp bánh mì vào chén, thêm nhân, rau sống ăn kèm rồi chan nước mắm vào cho thấm và thưởng thức ❤
I grown up in district 8 but now im living in the US, i miss district 8 so much. Im so happy because you made more video about my place, everybody just know about popular district like 1,3,4,5,Binh Thanh,... but they dont now we have a lots of good foods, good restaurants, good peoples in district 8. My dad was from Rach Gia and he would have banh mi hap daily for 3 pm snack when we were living in Berne Switzerland in the 1970s . Looks really yummy Max. Your Vietnamese is really fluent now.

Bánh mì hấp bắt nguồn dân saigon làm có thời trước 1975 chỉ có mở hành do dân nghèo đi xin bánh mì củ nguội rồi hấp ăn dân miền tây trước đây không có bánh mì may có dân Saigon đem về chia nhau ăn không đủ nói chi hấp 😂

Like com tam (from unwanted rice left in the field), banh mi hap is from stale bread, instead of throwing it away, they create banh mi hap. It’s surprising nice. Vietnamese people are very creative with food invention.

Steam bread is one of my favorite dishes from the south. My mom makes it all the time. We make ours with ground pork topping with the fried onion. Sooo good.
