The Vietnamese really do know pork. My last night in Vietnam, the owners of my homestay invited me to have dinner with them. One of the dishes she made was roast pork belly with pickled mustard greens. It was so simple but one of the best things I'd ever eaten. I was kind of obsessing about it. 😂A friend who cooks for a living gave me some fine points for making it well, things I'd never have thought of. Giving my arteries a break but I'll be back, pork belly.

This is the most correct title for this video. I've always planned to find and share videos like this to my non-Vietnamese friends. Not Pho or any famous dishes of Vietnam, or anything that is touristy/mainstream/overhyped, this right here is what they should be eating if they want to best experience authentic Vietnamese food. Very underrated and uncommon outside of Vietnam. I bet not everyone would think 'kho qua' (bitter melon) is good until they try it in Vietnam. It wouldn't be good on its own if you try it at home, it's how you cook it.
My hope is that future foreigner tourist who comes to Vietnam would try more "com binh dan" (economy meal) that has many plates on the table, instead of just heading straight to try Pho, Bun Cha or Egg Coffee, or Banh Mi, with an exception to Com Tam.
I encourage my friends to try something different. It saddens me to see that Pho is almost always the only thing that most foreigners just know when asked if they know any Vietnamese dish. I love Pho but since when it becomes the only dish that represent Vietnamese cuisine?!! It should go down on the list for a little bit so other dishes can have their chance to shine in the world's eyes. Maybe the media should switch it up every year so people can learn more about other dishes. Pho has reigned on that throne for too long and it's not even what most people would eat everyday. Pho has become too touristy. (other soup based dishes like Hu Tieu, Bun Rieu Cua, Banh Canh, Bun Bo Hue, Mi Quang, Canh Mong Toi Rau Day are lesser known but could lowkey be someone's favorite if they had known about it).
I nominate Max McFarlin's channel to be the go-to channel for anyone wants to educate themselves on Vietnamese food.
I'm from California, USA.. these types of restaurants do exist...and most of it is available as to go or take home..and it's called " family meal" when you go to restaurant ask for family meal menu

I very much agree with your opinion! I enjoyed watching Max's videos because he introduced his friends around the world to know more about my country's cuisine. There are many delicious, cheap and nutritious dishes and restaurants besides Pho. Max's video will help foreigners coming to Vietnam to enjoy delicious dishes without spending too much money in luxury places.

You have to start them slow and easy. Go with the sure things like pho and eggroll. Slowly move up to broken rice, fried rice, beef noodle, and spring rolls. Once they are ready you give them the "family meal" complete with shrimp paste sauce and bitter melon. I have many nieces and nephew that are born in the USA. Their parents try to introduce them to traditional Vietnamese food and almost always failed at first. The older they get, the more types of foods they can eat. We have to treat foreigners the same way. Part of the issue too is the lack of English translation. If foreigners know the ingredients of a dish, they are more willing to try. Food allergy and food poisoning are the surest ways to ruin a vacation

Nói chung ăn đồ ăn vn mà thiếu nước mắm thì ko còn ngon nữa vì có nhiều món sử dụng nó. Ông này còn biết mắm tôm thanh hoá ngon là giỏi rồi. Minh đi khắp nhưng đúng mỗi thanh hoá có chỗ bán mắm ngon ( có nhiều chỗ bán cũng ko ra gì).
Hey Max, Vietnamese living in the US here. Thanks for making these videos of trying out all types of food in Vietnam. I left VN when I was a kid so these videos bring me nostalgia as well as a sense of wonder at how much variety there is in the way the food is made there now. A lot of it looks so good that one day when I go back I want to try many places that you've put down locations for. Also thank you for putting where you find your bg music. When I lived in Hanoi in 2016 I would always eat Phở Tíu. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's the best dish I've ever had from any country. I live for Indian and Thai food, but Phở Tíu trumps them all.
I can't begin to describe how amazing it is. Strangely it's not popular or even that well known by the Vietnamese, and only 2 places in Hanoi serve it in the whole of Vietnam (as far as I'm aware).
I went back to Hanoi last year and thankfully the lady was still there :)

That looks a lot like a restaurant at Eden Center in Northern Virginia. Ex-Pat Vietnamese Americans have filled a strip mall with restaurants and stores. There are a few Korean and Thai restaurants too.

Cà pháo là từ ghép "quả cà/eggplant fruit" và "pháo tép/firecracker" vì ở miền Bắc khi xưa thường muối cà pháo nguyên quả/nguyên trái, ăn rất giòn và khi cắn quả cà trong miệng sẽ có cảm giác nó "nổ" lép bép như tiếng pháo tép, nếu vô ý các hạt nhỏ sẽ bắn ra ngoài như xác pháo vậy...! Hơi cường điệu tý, nhưng thật đấy!

I love seeing the home style spread of com bin dinh. Reminds me of childhood comfort and delicious foods. Absolutely LOVE the pork belly with mustard greens. The fish in tomato sauce was also a favorite of mine growing up, but my dad fried a whole catfish and put it over a bed of tomato sauce that is uber yum! And yes, fried stuffed tofu in tomato sauce is good, too.
Tôi là người việt nam nhưng nhiều lúc vào những quán cơm bình dân cũng ko biết chọn món ra sao. Vì nhìn món nào cũng ngon và muốn ăn tất cả :)). Vậy nên mỗi ngày tôi sẽ ăn 2 đến 3 món :))
