  • Oh hanoi hanoi.
I’m in Hanoi with my family in time for Vietnamese lunar new year year, têt.
The sound of moped engines vibrate in the air and angry grocery shoppers haggle for the best produce to feed their family. Small plastic stools are sprawled across the city and hungry patrons slurp away. I’m on a mission to find the best street food hanoi has to offer and to share what I taste smell see hear feel with you in this beautiful city, This is 100 hours of Vietnamese Street Food in Hanoi.

UPDATE: I've linked all the locations and pinned them onto Google Maps so they can be helpful for your next Hanoi trip! I've starred the ones that were my personal favorites (even though I enjoyed everything), but keep in mind that a lot of places were closed for Tết holiday, so my options were a little more limited. Nonetheless, I can assure you that even the "average" street stall with patrons eating will be better than any noodles you'll get anywhere else in the world. I apologize in advance for all the spelling errors in the video, promise I’ll double triple check next time :)

Hello Tina! Congrats on your trip to Vietnam and Hanoi! I’m honestly more proud than I should be to have you visit my city lol😭 but anyways. I do want to add some extra notes to the foods you featured here:
    - I wouldn’t describe it as fish pho personally, bún cá feels very much like its own thing.
    - Regarding the place where you ate both the phở gà and the bún chả, from my experience, restaurants that covers many different types of foods usually can not match with a restaurant who specializes in that food. So the bún chả having the chả (which is the meat) being a little dry is honestly kind of expected😭
    - Actually, the papaya salad you ate is actually called nộm, while the “bò khô” is actually beef jerky, and the fish sauce should be called nước mắm, with an “mmm” sound at the beginning of the second word
    - The Bánh Mỳ Phố is actually a chain of bánh mỳ, and personally, independent vendors will generally always have better quality
    - I love you so much for covering bánh cuốn!! It’s always seemed very underrated to me as a dush
    - I actually think you going on Lunar New Year was a disadvantage, because everyone will close their business on New Years (understandably so) so it might have hindered your food experiences a little bit
    - Riêu would be more closely translated as crab butter in English, and the combination of bún riêu and bún ốc would be bún riêu ốc
    - Very glad you tried out Grab, it’s just so iconic to Vietnamese transportation
    - Nem chua rán is such an iconic snack, and it’s actually made by fermenting raw pork until it develops a sour smell, which is the “chua” part
Again, thank you so much for visiting our country and city, and producing a beautiful video to accompany it🩷🩷

Really really nice video! I can see the dedication you put in for every shot and the effort to speak and write the vietnamese name of each dish. Thank you so much! It's just that I cant help myself correcting some details:
1:47 The "phở cá" that you mentioned is actually a very different and not a common dish, definitely not the same "bún cá" that you were having, even though "phở" and "bún" are both types of rice noodle, the soups that are paired with them usually have very different and distinctive flavour, hardly interchangeable. The vegetable is probably water crust or some similar sort as I have never seen morning glory go with this dish before. And you are absolutely right about "bún cá" being a good refreshing hangover soup, the youngsters ate it a lot during the Lunar New Year Holiday after all the repetitive heavy traditional meals.
5:06 Here in the North, "chả giò" is usually called "nem rán" (literal translation is fried meat roll)
6:22 I'm not quite sure about the yellow skin indicating that it's aged chicken because normally "phở" is preferably prepared with fresh chicken. And the boiled chicken skin we have here is always that yellow.
6:53 8:02 You got the translation for "nộm thịt bò khô" quite correct but the word for "salad" here is "nộm" while "thịt bò khô" is "dried beef" or "beef jerky"
9:01 "Chè" is actually a broad term for many of different types of sweet pudding soup we have here and even though "chè khúc bạch" is the name of the shop, I believe what you had there was a different type of "chè" as the "khúc bạch" one is flavoured milk jellies that are eaten with thin lychee flavoured syrup and topped with lychee and almond slices. (Personally really love it myself)
10:59 "Bánh tráng cuốn" (without the ending "g") is actually rolled rice paper and it should be "bánh tráng nướng" - fried rice paper that you were showing.
13:24 The higher price for public holidays is a way that businesses try to pay the employees that sacrify their days off to work, quite common here.
14:33 The spatula is actually a single giant thin chopstick. In addition I doubt that the meat must be pork and not beef, never seen it in typical "bánh cuốn" to be honest. The cinnamon note is obvious because that type of ham is purposely made with the cinnamon flavor (the orange part). It's called "chả quế" - cinnamon ham.
18:16 The "riêu" is actually crab paste as we would crush/pound whole small sweet-water crabs and gently boil it to get that airy crumbly cake texture.
28:14 We can let go of the other mispelling but definitely not this one because of the meaning of that word 😅 The one you want to put there is "Phở bò". I guess that you pick up the "Cơm Phở" from the vendor's sign but it just read as "rice and phở". Fun fact is that many vietnamese vendors dont really have a name and just put up name of the dishes that they are selling.
28:24 We dont use chives for phở, that's actually spring onions
30:45 They're pickled papayas and carrots, other places might put them on the side for you to put in based on your preference. 32:00 Yes, bún chả is supposed to be served warm, perfect for the cold winter of Hanoi. Love how your mother did a ssam for you there.
36:50 The "nem chua rán" is actually made of pork and pork skin, which explains the jelly chewy texture. The black sause tho, I think it's a mixture of soy sauce (maggi or other brand) and tamarind as we call it tamarind sauce - "sốt me"
42:40 The typical filling should be green beans. Most types of nuts except for peanuts are quite expensive ingredient in Vietnam so the most popular filling for so many traditional cakes and sweets is bean, expecially green bean.
Lastly, it's so cute each time you said fish sauce in vietnamese but it should be nước "mắm" with an "m" ^^
Of course my notes are not absolute as the culture and cuisine of Vietnam are very diverse and there are a lot of variations of each dish among regions. Just an urge to share a more indigenous view. Again, thank you so much for making such a nice video introducing Vietnamese with your culinary insight, Tina. Glad your family had fun!

You also seem the most in your element when you're traveling and eating which makes it all seem like such a passionate adventure. This is what makes you stand out from the rest on RUclips imo. Hi, the fish noodle soup and snail, crab meat noodle soup are made with another type of noodle called Bún, it’s round rice noodle, it has a little hint of sourness. Phở on the other hand is made with Bánh Phở/Phở, flat rice noodle, that is more bland, when it comes to the taste.
