How can styles of music from various areas in Greece, from the Aegean to Epirus to the Ionian islands and Crete, come together, speaking to the minds and hearts of performers from diverse places, cultures and traditions? Bringing together virtuosos from around the world, from Europe to America, Tora Collective bridges the gap between the West and the East, the Occident and the Orient, contemporary life and tradition, conjuring a universal, musical narrative.
An intriguing musical performance fostering (and reigniting) dialogue between different cultures, using the power of music and improvisation as a springboard.
Declared a “bass ace” by Bass Player Magazine, acclaimed bassist, composer and producer Petros Klampanis grew up in Greece, surrounded by the confluence of Mediterranean and Balkan folk music. Now living between New York and Athens, Greece, he is curious in his approach, always seeking unique ways to integrate elements from multiple genres, ranging from classical music to pop. His varied musical life journey marries aggressive melodicism, beautiful intonation, and uniquely personal sound on all the projects he leads or produces.
Klampanis has collaborated with world-acclaimed artists such as Greg Osby, Jacques Morelenbaum, Oded Tzur, Arooj Aftab, Anoushka Shankar, Shai Maestro, Gilad Hekselman, Jean-Michel Pilc, Snarky Puppy, Kinan Azmeh, Dimitra Galani and Maria Farantouri, among many others. His extensive list of performance credits includes Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, Glastonbury (UK), Rock in Rio (Lisbon), JazzAhead (Bremen) and the XJazz Festival (Berlin).
Kristjan Randalu stands as one of the finest pianists of his generation, demonstrating remarkable skill both as a bandleader and a sideman.
Alkmini Basakarou graces us with her captivating vocals, seamlessly blending elements of folk and traditional music with sophistication and intellect, earning her reputation as one of Greece's most promising singers.
Thomas Meleteas brings his extraordinary talent on the oud to the ensemble, showcasing not only his virtuosity as a performer but also his prowess as a composer.
"The bringing together of Grecian and other international folk and jazz talents succeeds with aplomb, thanks to the sensitive craftsmanship of all the artists and their informed authenticity as they treat these traditional songs with just the right balance of respect and innovation" - Downbeat, USA (listed as one of the top albums in 2023).

Super. Thanks for posting this. I am aware of Randalu from ECM and first heard Petros in Oded Tzur's band also on ECM. Terrific music.
