It's was the only real film that moved me and made me think in very long time. One of the most interesting thought driven films I ever watched. When the movie ended I just sat quietly for a while just meditating on the feels the film gave me. The Director truly understand human nature, be very interesting to see him make a horror film, it could be mentally terrifying.
I saw this film this afternoon...im still thinking about it. I thought this was a really beautiful poetic film. David Lowery really understands images and manages to make them overwhelmingly cinematic without much happening. We need more directors like him. Brilliant film, my favorite of 2017 so far
i got overwhelmed by this movie, the song is just fiiting into it. left me speechless from the begining to the end powerless just staring at the screen. i won't forget this movie
The film is a masterpiece A real work of art. I've only watched it once. Its a hard film for me to watch again, due to the experience. I listen to the main song now and then and I flood into tears, as it takes me straight back to the film. So Ive never been brave enough to watch it again. Its not because its sad, but its metaphysical journey that can take its toll.
Saw the film last night (2/2020). Your review was spot on and brilliant. Not everyone will or should like this film. But like you, I thought the film was beautiful; it stayed with me.
Finally got around to watching this one & loved it. The only part I found aggravatingly long was the infamous pie scene. But something that really struck me was the DESIGN (of all things) of the sheet(s). It was gorgeous and conveyed so much w/ so little. The pleats & folds, they way it fell and moved. It’s beautiful. It’s simplicity enables us to project whatever we are feeling on it. It’s such a simple but powerful thing that can be easily overlooked but so important to making this beautiful film work.
I could be projecting my own thoughts and beliefs onto this film, but there were many attributes of this movie that really stuck with me. One scene, the one with the most dialoge, was of a guy at a party word vomiting his philosophical views onto everyone. Much of his speech was directly taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy of nihilism. Also, in one scene the ghost knocks the books off the shelf and one of the books was clearly a Nietzsche book. Just wondering if you think the movie was heavily influenced in this way?
A24 released The Witch, Room, Ex-Machina and Enemy which are some of the best movies i've seen, so i'm looking forward to this. By the way, have you considered making a music section on your channel?
on second viewing i found the party guy's monologue really compelling honestly. i thought it was going to be really annoying rewatching it, but i was so in the big questions that the film presents that i was just loving his rambling about how thoroughly futile the concepts of time and legacy are
Andrew HarrisI just watched this movie tonight, and boy did I love it. What a great, ORIGINAL, beautiful, and beautifully moving film. I have NEVER seen another film like this one. I think the only other film that comes somewhat close to this is Personal Shopper, which I liked very much as well, but this was MUCH better. I highly recommend this, if you have a very open mind when it comes to films.4
I think the sheet is a cinematic device meant to make the ghost visible to the audience. The ghost is invisible to the characters in the film so the sheet is not literal but plays to our cultural tropes and oddly the sheets which are used in morgues. Very clever.
Loved the film! Loved the way it was shot. Loved the performances. Loved the pacing. Loved the pie. It left me stunned to the point I couldn't speak for a minute. Very moving. Both sad and hopeful. If that is possible.
He must have REALLY wanted to know what that note said. He waited around for 156 years, just chillin', roamin the streets, watching hundreds of thousands of other beautiful ladies come and go. Never took to any of them or fell in love with anyone else. All that waiting. All that time. All that patience. Just to read that homemade fortune cookie his wife hid in the wall. That takes commitment
I think the note said “NOTHING”. Earlier in the movie she explained that she would write notes everytime she moved & hide them so that if she ever returned she would remember why she loved the place. She actually hated living there and wanted to move away, he loved the house and didn’t want to move. So when he read the words “NOTHING” his reason for staying was over. Or it said “Rest in Peace”. What do you think?
I know people have tried to ask Rooney Mara what she wrote, but she says she doesn't remember-she wrote something she decided on in that moment. She also says that even if she DID remember she wouldn't say lol
I feel that this movie is my cup of tea. I tend to like movies that not much happens lol I recommend Paterson for that type of movie. Interesting that I read Rooney Mara never eaten pie before filming the scene. I find it odd someone never eaten a pie before unless you're a small child. Update: I watched it an hour after watching Marianna's review. I loved it but completely agree this movie is not for everyone ( two people walked out after 20 mins ) im going to need some time to process it that's for sure.
Saw that _Paterson_ was recently added to Amazon Prime, so I'm really looking forward to watching it-sounds like a movie I'd enjoy. Glad you ended up loving _A Ghost Story_!
Wonderful review as always! This film doesn't come out til next Thursday over here I don't think, but I am chomping at the bit to see it - the trailer keeps coming on at my local independent cinema every time I see a film there, so I'm getting impatient haha! It looks so beautiful and emotional, so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Thank you! I'm really curious what you'll think of this one, I feel like it's definitely a love it or hate it kind of movie. Watched Emma's review earlier, and looks like she had a very similar reaction to mine-such an emotional experience!
at first, I didnt like the film, but after finishing it, it kept me thinking more and more and after watching this review...I think I might like it alot more now
Liked and subscribed. The monologue is from William Oldham he's a musician known as Bonnie Prince Billy. I don't think there was too much to read into his monologue, the scene works as a kind of intermission and emotional release to segue into the surrealism of the third act.
That cuddling scene made me insanely uncomfortable. But at the same time it made me sad because I knew exactly the emotions and feelings they were having. But again uncomfortable lol
Who has died the most times? Dr Who, Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, The Drummer from Spinal Tap, Sean Bean in his movie career, people killed by Kevin Bacon in films, or Kenny from South Park?
I get the feeling that sometimes directors troll their audience with these kind of movies though I'm sure it's not the case haha. I don't think they'll show it in my country but since it is getting great reviews I'll get around it someday. I heard the song you mentioned and it's great! If you liked the song out of the context of the movie, I would recommend Vancouver Sleep Clinic's album "Winter". Ben Howard's "Every Kingdom" starts great but gets more personal towards the end and Sufjan Stevens' "Carrie & Lowell" is also great. I'm fanboying at this point but sometimes we need to listen to music that makes us feel stuff haha, pop music tends to be really hollow nowadays. With these albums I get the feel that I'm kind of listening to someone's private recordings, like you mentioned with the movie, especially with Stevens.
Saw the movie and was compelled to watch it a second time. My only issues were the dialog, Casey Affleck high pitched voice, not sure if it was intentional for the movie, had to use CC to understand what was being said. Also the bald dude ranting was a bit much, reminds me of an old boss who looked similar and would pontificate the same way. I'd highly recommend, however anyone going through any type of depression it could trigger some issues especially when the house was being demolished.
I watched this movies yesterday and absolutely loved it! I'm thinking about seeing every movie from A24, since I don't know the company and independent movies are my kind of thing. Is it a good idea? What are your thoughts on A24?
I'm on the same mission with A24, their movies are usually great so I try to watch everything they release. There have been a few I didn't really enjoy, but the majority of them are really good.
I liked it, maybe need to think about it before deciding if I love it. Leaving many things for the audience to decipher is clever but also a bit lazy when there is no proper explaination. I am referring to the note, what did it say and why is it that whatever it says dosent matter but it manages to free C from the eternal circle? Obviously the attachment is to the house but retrieving the note M writing to herself shouldn't affect Cs journey, then his attachment becomes to the note and hence M and not the house. That ending just seemed a bit sleazy attempt at looking clever
I saw A Ghost Story and another A24 movie, Good Time, at the fantasia film festival. I loved both of them. I would really love to know what you think of Good Time when you get a chance to see it, I thought Robert Pattinson was amazing in it.
Hey Marianna, what's your top 5 movies of the year so far? Also, could you review a movie that recently came out on Netflix called To The Bone please? It's very polarizing for a lot of people but I personally loved it.
Hmm, I generally like to give my top movies a second viewing just to make sure, but at the moment it's Dunkirk, Baby Driver, Raw, A Ghost Story, and The Devil's Candy.
+Impression Blend It's a gorgeus movie, but it is slow paced as well and full of imagery and dreamlike concepts. It also deals with the meaning of life, death and trascendence. I hope "A Ghost Story gets screened here in México. I would love to see it.
The Fountain is one of my favorite films of all time. It is so damn beautifully shot, and I get choked up every time I see it. Personally, I think its Hugh Jackman's greatest role. You HAVE TO see it Mariana (Impression Blend). Would LOVE to know how you feel about it.
This was actually my favourite film of 2017 and I was sad to see it wasn't oscar nominated but kinda get it too. Based on the reviews I've seen and read so far this looks like it gonna be a really sad movie! Anyway this movie isn't showing in my town so I probably gonna have to wait the VoD! A question... if I watch Ghost Story at home on the TV should I fast forward the pie eating scene?
i think this is the saddest movie i have ever seen in my life next to hachi: A dog's tale. Please someone help me from this 3 hours marathon for all the Mariana's videos =.=. i hope to see your opinions on War for the planet of the apes, its the closest to a perfect trilogy as we can get.. much love from Australia
You should spell 'V A L A K' on your shelf, for subscriber/viewer 'impact'. hehe P.S. This movie made me cry, because of the sheer loss that the "character" goes through..
I know we should always differentiate films actors from their characters but what does everyone think about this Casey Affleck rape allegation? I know it was a while ago but I don't know what to think...I find it hard to not think about that stuff when I watch a film.
I loved the part where they said hi to each other at the window.
Yessss, I really liked that too!
"I don't think they're coming"
“The Pie” scene was the most heartbreaking movie scene I have seen in years.
U feel like ur the ghost itself and as heartbreaking as the ghost is
@Samael bc that's when you realize that HE realizes "fuck...now I'm going to have to wait another 156 years to find out what that damn note said"
It's was the only real film that moved me and made me think in very long time. One of the most interesting thought driven films I ever watched. A Ghost Story is a romance story for the intellectual, philosophical cosmonaut. A philosophical statement on love, life, loss, and meaning.
It so sticks with you. I watched it 3 days ago and can’t get over it .. it devastated me!
Yeah
This movie strucked me like a lighting in the middle of a backyard, overwhelming . So unique. An absolute fricking masterpiece.
I also LOVE the poster. Can't to get it, frame it, and hang it up
Me too! Beautiful poster art.
M and C are the stars of this movie, but the music is the supporting cast. It was stunning and carried emotion and feeling in a very beautiful way.
Great video I am a A24 fan myself, they are the best studio releasing movies today, can't wait for the Disaster Artist
Thank you! I'm looking forward to that one too, should be interesting :)
That teaser they put out was kinda terrible though :]
Jacob Durham good time also looks really good.
Ethidian, I didn't even watch the teaser-I know I'm watching that movie just because it's A24.
DERE HE IS

Music? No, not really, wouldn't even know how to approach that.
Carlos Gonzalez and Swiss Army Man.
I feel the exact same way as you about this film. This movie is devastatingly beautiful. Great review. You got a new sub in me!
How awful would it been if the note simply said "aha, made ya look"
on second viewing i found the party guy's monologue really compelling honestly. i thought it was going to be really annoying rewatching it, but i was so in the big questions that the film presents that i was just loving his rambling about how thoroughly futile the concepts of time and legacy are

I so agree with you! Great and emotionally impacting film.

Teren Cole it doesn’t really matter what it said
I hope it said Rest In Peace
I loved every moment of this masterpiece
One of the best I've seen

I went into this film really thinking I was going to hate it but I have to admit, it was quite good.
Positive review, I am very much looking forward to watching this film.
You had my curiosity, now you have my attention

Marianna, this is a wonderful review of a wonderful film. Somehow I've lost my connection with your website. I'm back and I glad I am.
Thank you! Welcome back :)
I loved it. Especially the time passing toward the end and how it all comes back around through time. amazing concept
Liked and subscribed. The monologue is from William Oldham he's a musician known as Bonnie Prince Billy. I don't think there was too much to read into his monologue, the scene works as a kind of intermission and emotional release to segue into the surrealism of the third act.

one of the best movies about life, death, love and loss ive ever seen. A must watch!
ma'am can you pls review REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
Oh man, that means I would have to re-watch it.
I don't know if I can handle that movie again! haha
it's ok. I know it's a hard job for anyone
"Artistic" schlock.
overrated unrealistic movie; dat's overplayed af homie
Great review, Ms Marianna! I anticipate watching this film soon.
Thank you!
Who has died the most times? Dr Who, Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, The Drummer from Spinal Tap, Sean Bean in his movie career, people killed by Kevin Bacon in films, or Kenny from South Park?
kenny probably
The Cassandra Syndrome meets Radu Molasar Bill Murray Groundhogs Day.
"Sometimes you just watch a film on a day where you're in the mood for that type of thing." Me, in a nutshell.
I get the feeling that sometimes directors troll their audience with these kind of movies though I'm sure it's not the case haha. This is the only movie I have ever seen that I have immediately re watched in a loop!
You had me at A24 =)
An innovative, impactful film, and a great review. Thanks
Thanks for watching :)
Saw the movie and was compelled to watch it a second time. I love your movie reviews never quit doing them
Thank you!
Thanks, I was looking for a comprehensive take on this one. Always skeptical of the movies that look potentially AMAZING.
Thanks for watching :)
As a Pheobe bridgers Stan I had a special appreciation for this
*Great review Mariana, didn't saw this film yet, but from the review i'm pretty sure that this will be the kind of film i'll love. Greetings.*
Thanks for watching :)
great film...loved the technique of staying with the scene longer than normal
I watched this movies yesterday and absolutely loved it! I'm thinking about seeing every movie from A24, since I don't know the company and independent movies are my kind of thing. Is it a good idea? What are your thoughts on A24?
I'm on the same mission with A24, their movies are usually great so I try to watch everything they release. There have been a few I didn't really enjoy, but the majority of them are really good.
Thank you ^^ ♥ I'm definitely doing a marathon of these ahah
Impression Blend just checked your letterbox & i must say you may be in for a treat once you get a viewing of The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Beautiful film.
You got good points.
Hey looks like I am not the only one who gets attached to movie soundtracks.
Would you say that it runs a close tie with "The Fountain"?
Don't know, haven't seen it.
THE FOUNTAIN, along with APOCALYPTO, is one of the few truly visionary films of this century. NOT Malick's TREE OF LIFE.
Not a personal favorite, but THE FOUNTAIN is certainly one of the VERY few VISIONARY films of the 21st century. This movie comes nowhere near it.
Bravo! You nailed this review of an amazing movie.
what a brilliant movie!
This was actually my favourite film of 2017 and I was sad to see it wasn't oscar nominated but kinda get it too. I kinda think it did what Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain aspired to be which is one of my all time favourite films but on a lower budget, tonally consistent, and kinda more everyday-ish. It's nice to see that other people appreciate a film like this where much like The Fountain, I feel like I mostly only see people who so adamantly and so ironically, pretentiously, crucify it as being pretentious and a garbage movie, waste of money and time. I also really liked the little detail of the scene where the ghost is upset and throws the books that there is a copy of Nietzsche which I think kind of acts as a safeguard against people saying that the time repeat in A Ghost Story doesn't make sense.
Looks a very interesting movie.
I think it's an interesting and unique way in telling a story. Even though I haven't seen the movie, I think it'll effect me in a way that few movies have. I know it'll start me thinking about my mother, who I miss very much so. 😯😯😯
Yup, I'm sure it will have a strong emotional effect on you then. Let me know what you think after you watch it!
Well Marianna, I saw it over the weekend and it's the second movie to make me cry (The Elephant Man was the first). I"ll give David Lowery credit , he's told a very powerful story about grief and a person ability or inability to move on. I was thinking about my mother, who passed several ago, while watching this movie and imagining her, doing the same thing but making sure her 'Baby Huey' was OK.
You just picked up a subscriber.
It's one of the only films to make me cry in the theatre along with Toy Story 3
Talking about Rooney Mara, please review her it is a beautiful movie
One of my favorite films!
A great film. I agree with this review, for the most part. The movie lags in the first half. But I did not object to the philosophical monologue.
So glad i watch this movies, the last scene hit me like a truck, tears bursting out and all.
L Simply L I didn’t get the last scene .....
God i want to see the movie but i think my country wont display it at theaters! Great review as always!
Aww that sucks! I hope you will get to see it eventually
Hey Marianna, any plans of reviewing the great new Netflix show, OZARK?
So many shows, so little time... Will have to check it out at some point soon.
So let me ask you this. I lost my
Daughter 7 years ago. Is she walking around our home? If so, how
Could I dream of moving from
This house like I’ve been thinking of..... that just brings guilt. Opinions???
Dan Da just move don’t dwell , I know what you are feeling , I left and never looked back too many memories
May you please review suspiria if you love it?
I can't wait to see this movie trailer looks great and your review makes me want to see it for sure! Thank you👍
I hope you enjoy :)
LOL I haven't seen it but just you talking about was starting to make my eyes a little watery. Damn my empathy ....schwooooo....
Aww I hope you check it out soon :) Thanks for watching!
Based on the reviews I've seen and read so far this looks like it gonna be a really sad movie! Anyway this movie isn't showing in my town so I probably gonna have to wait the VoD! A question... if I watch Ghost Story at home on the TV should I fast forward the pie eating scene?
Why would you fast forward through anything unless the movie is actually bad?!
Hehe!!! You got me there! Something that's great shouldn't be fast forwarder!!!
i think this is the saddest movie i have ever seen in my life next to hachi: A dog's tale. Please someone help me from this 3 hours marathon for all the Mariana's videos =.=. i hope to see your opinions on War for the planet of the apes, its the closest to a perfect trilogy as we can get.. much love from Australia
Kelly Park add one more movie in your list which is definitely as good the movies you mentioned above.
Seven Pounds(2008)
Best movie I’ve seen in 2019.
Best review.
The pie eating scene made me so angry, that I nearly turned it off. And I NEVER turn off a film, no matter what.
I'm like Larry David. Im a finisher :)
You should spell 'V A L A K' on your shelf, for subscriber/viewer 'impact'.
hehe
P.S. This movie made me cry, because of the sheer loss that the "character" goes through..
i love the movie from A24.but honestly i hv a qus in my mind.what was she right down in her note?
Love this movie, great review!
Good review but I think the background music is too loud.
an art film with white-sheeted ghost :) , Ok I have to see first.
I know we should always differentiate films actors from their characters but what does everyone think about this Casey Affleck rape allegation? I know it was a while ago but I don't know what to think...I find it hard to not think about that stuff when I watch a film.
Arthouse schlock. Give viewers something to hold onto.
I do the same thing with the song. Omg.
I liked it but the end made me so confused
hey I gave it 4/5...
I am India I love u speak English and your hair style... I love u so much
This was an awesome movie!
