  • In this video I upload and flash a new tune file to my ECU using HP Tuners to my 2.4L Saturn Sky and it's new Turbo Build. I'm so close to being finished I can taste it. All of the hardware is installed and the only thing left is to get it tuned and making the proper boost.
I'm using a manual boost controller and slowly adjusting it to increase boost. I want to get into the 8-10 range.

Hey, Mike! I've been watching your videos for quite a while, and just recently picked up a 2008 5spd redline. I thoroughly enjoy your straight forward, honest, no bs videos.
I've been looking into tuning my car. I'm just not sure how to go about it. ZZPerformance offers their maf sensors and pcm tune, but I'm fairly certain that requires me to remove my ECU and ship it to them. I realize that the 2.4 may be different from the redline, but how easy was it for you to get setup and running with Hp Tuner?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Matt. Welcome to the Kappa family with your Redline. I used RPM Motorsports to do the tune when I simply had a stage 2 tune before the turbo. Afterwards I had a guy in Canada do the tune for me. In both cases, they were remote. For RPM, he sent me a laptop with the HP Tuner cable and then logged into it via my wifi at my house. He then did everything while I sat and watched. I did have to do some data runs throughout the tuning process however. With the Canadian guy, I used a friend's HP Tuner laptop and cable and I would do data runs and email him the results. He would then email me back a tune file which I flashed to the ECU. I would then do a data run again and send it to him. This process went on for 15 sessions because he would tweak it just a bit after seeing each run log. He is very hard to get a hold of, though but did a great job. In both cases, I had nothing to do with the tune. I just mainly did data runs logging the results and sending them to the tuning guy.

Hi Mike, I always love your videos. Is there a reason why you can only get 8 to 10 lbs of boost in the 2.4? I have a Redline 2.0 with a big bore turbo and I'm getting like 24 to 25 lbs of boost. And what is that boost controller? Is that an aftermarket part specifically for the 2.4?

well the number one priority in doing a tune always has to be the competency and experience of the person doing the tune, I can tell you from experience that working on a dynamometer as opposed to working remotely will save you days of time, DAYS!
Working remotely requires you do your runs on streets, which often have traffic and rarely allow you to do the kinds of pulls you need, up to the speeds you need to maintain in order to get a good log. And when you consider that after each run you have to send the data to your tuner and then wait for them to return a new tune to you so you can do additional runs, you can see it gets very time consuming. Not to mention that getting your car up to 70 or 80 miles an hour may not be legal on a highway near you.
So if you have a tuner that you absolutely want to use who is not local to you, at least spend the money to put the car on a dynamometer for the day. That will allow you and your tuner to get everything done in one 4-5 hour day.

Hi Edward. The 2.4L engine has a higher compression ratio than the 2.0 so it does not require the higher amount of boost that the 2.0 does. I could go higher than 8-10, but then I'd need to beef up the engine with higher end internal components. My engine can handle the 8-10 range and keeping it that low will also make it last longer.

@@slsmag I agree with you 100%. If you can find a local tuner that you trust and they have a dyno, that's the best of both worlds. However, in my area, the only tuner that was recommended to me with a dyno was extremely expensive and I also heard bad things about them from others. The other shops that were recommended to me were quite a distance away. The tuner that I'm currently using was recommended by a friend who also uses him and trusted him a lot. He was also significantly less expensive than the local guy. So even though it's taking a lot more time (which I don't mind because I like driving my car), it's turning into a win-win situation for me. This guy is really really good. But, like you said. If you can find someone locally with a dyno that you trust, by all means, go that route.

I can agree with the 2.0 owners, 24 or 25 psi Boost is one heck of a ride.....I applaud Mike for all his hard work....that 2.4 is a different animal now!

The shop is called Overkill Motorsports in Canada. Their website is www.getoverkilled.ca.
I'd rather not give out pricing because it may depend on what he needs to do with your car. I basically emailed him and he came back with a price for me which was extremely reasonable.
Let's just say that a local tuner in my area was going to charge me over $600 for the tune (but this was also using a Dyno). William at Overkill Motorsports wasn't even close to that price.
