@Simply Betta: Hi Taylor, great video with a nice explanation of what aspects you took under consideration. Nice animations as well! Selection of breeders indeed is subjective and even if two hobbyists would start with the same pair, the result will be not the same a few generations down the line as personal preference simply differs from hobbyist to hobbyists. Nothing wrong with that! As the perfect fish simply does not exist it will be difficult to find all the desired characteristics in one fish. As F1 generation, all these fish should be carrying the right components to see some lightbodied metallic fish back in F2. It will be a matter of chance that the right alleles will be combined to get the combination you are aiming for colorwise. I would not worry too much about the red wash at this point, this likely will pop-up anyway in some fish in F2. You can always get rid of that later by selective breeding. For me personally form includes the finnage as well. At the moment the F1 generation shown in this video are is superdelta, in order to work towards the shape of the finnage as shown in your animations I would already put more emphasis on that when selecting fish for F2 from this spawn. Off course I can not see these fish live and only can judge them from the pictures/videos displayed in here. With respect to the males I also would choose male number 1 and understand why you have selected number 11. Personally I also would take number 9 in consideration. With respect tot he females, female number 4 would be a no-go for me because of the short body (despite the nice color). Female 1 and 3 would be my first pick, but would also take 5 as reserve. There are many ways to succes and at the end it is all matter of personal preference and working the line by selective breeding. In order to increase the chance of reaching your goals I would advise not to bet on one horse but to go for more than one in parallel if the space/time allows this in order to create multiple options for future 😉. Good luck and looking forward to see the results!!

@Simply Betta Please still raise Male #12 especially if he is a marbling type from the look of the transparent fins. He may be great for someone's community tank where they need that docile betta. Thank you SO MUCH for the video! It will help me pick out a future betta for my own tank. Now I know what to look for =)
That would be the COOLEST but I had to downsize my projects recently after I tore out my fish room, and this project was included. *sobs*. I'll start over!
@@SimplyBetta awww that sucks I thought this was an introduction to such a series. I too would love to watch you go through the generations with us. I would def wait the time frame between.
Concerning qualities or the male, I think you missed the two most important Taylor....Can he hold down a job, and does he have good benefits......speaking as a dad of course....love your vids
Also a very important trait to look for, especially in metallics, are the scales. They should be all around the same size and go streamlined along the body. Fish with scale faults would bei disqualified in shows. Plus when talking about metallics or whites. Allways keep an eye out for any growths on the scales and eyes.
This applies SO MUCH to geckos, especially crest geckos and their colors and patterns. I'm going to steal your voice over, do a video on crested geckos, and replace 'betta' with my deep voice over of 'crested gecko'. 😉

Here is a great comment from @mackenzie ferguson from a different video! Hi Taylor! This is a lovely video and considering what the parents were, it looks like you did very well here! I know this is a video from a while ago, but since you asked in BBU, here's my 2 cents! From the potential fish you've chosen, it looks like you're leaning towards yellow/blue copper longfin HM, so that's what I'm going to go with here. As far as my overall personal preferences, I want fish with enough body to hold up those fins in the long term, finnage that is proportional to the fish's body (again for longevity, but also balance), and toplines that don't drop off towards the head. I personally do not like fighting red wash and spoon heads, so I don't lol! Overall, I think these fish have a nice depth of body, but they all appear to be a little short in comparison. I'd try to breed towards keeping the depth of body and strong base of tail, while adding length to improve the overall balance. Another thing you may struggle with a little is getting those nice sharp outer caudal edges. In my opinion, there are 3 males I'd consider and 2 females. I've listed them in preference order with critique below: Males: #1: Male 8 - Male 8 would be my top pick. Overall he is a nicely balanced fish with no red wash, a nice topline, and strong tail base. I really like the depth of his body and how strong the base of his tail is. He has a decent spread, but is lacking those sharp edges (though the outer rim is even which is good). His dorsal fin could have longer front rays, but that may also be from the photo/video. His anal fin is long, but considering his positives, I don't mind it too much. Long anal fins can be hard to breed away from, so that is something to keep in mind. He doesn't have any red wash which is a nice plus (considering my assumption with where you want to go with this line) and he has a nice topline without spoonhead issues or a dramatic slope. #2: Male 11 - I like this male too, though not as much as Male 8. He has nice depth of body, but is shorter than I'd like. I do think his body will be able to support his finnage long term. His topline slopes a bit farther down than I'd like as well. His dorsal is fine, and while his caudal has good spread, the outer rim isn't as smooth. His anal fin is also long. He does have some red wash, but it's not too bad overall #3: Male 10 - This male probably has the best length/depth ratio, but his finnage is oversized for my taste. He has a decent balance between his 3 unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, anal), but he does have red wash. I'd prefer longer front dorsal rays. I do worry about this fish's ability to hold up with its finnage over time and therefore his ability to produce fish who hold up to their finnage over time as well. Females: #1: Female 5 - I like this female the most. She has a nice topline with good depth of body. She appears a bit shorter than I'd like though. I like how even and balanced her anal fin is, especially in comparison to the males. She doesn't have a red wash which is nice. Her dorsal fin looks alright, the front rays could be longer and the dorsal could be wider as well. The caudal is nice and even, again the edge rays could be longer to help give that 'sharp' look, but it's not bad, and she appears to have good spread. #2: Female 3 - This is another nice female with a good topline and depth of body. She is shorter than I'd like. Her anal fin isn't quite as nice as Female 5, but still pretty good. Her caudal/dorsal fin spread is nice. She does have red wash though it isn't too bad. If you wanted to go HMPK with this line, I'd probably go get a nice copper male HMPK and pair to Female 5, it would save you a bunch of work. I would make sure to look for a male with really clean caudal fin edges, a good anal fin (depending on what variation of HMPK you want), and a longer body. Overall, this looks like a nice group considering how different your parent fish were!
That is a good explanation of how you select the pairs. But we have to take in consideration that in genetics there is a thin called Recombination Frequency where you can mathematically calculate how the offspring will be using the Punnett square, that describes the phenotypic ratio 9:3:3:1, so let's say you get just 16 individuals only 1 will be with the characteristics that you're looking for. Long story short from the amount of offsprings just a few will have the golden color you are trying to get very probable in the 3-4th generation. But I'll be here to congratulate you in that achievement. Best of success in the task ahead.
Thank you for sharing your process with us! It's always nice to see someone breeding and selecting traits for health as well as colour. Loved hearing your selection process and how you weed out your fish to select your breeding fish.

Hello! haha my pleasure, I love your enthusiasm for your hobby and animals. I'm getting my first Leo soon and I'm excited! I'm considering trying the breeding and raising process at least once in my life, maybe next year!
My favorites from the beginning were male 11 and female 3! I LOVE their coloring and form so much. Although the pairs you chose will produce some stunning offspring 😍
This was so cool! I loved how well you explained your choices, thinking process and why you ultimately choose what you did. I wish you didn't have to scrap the project as it would have made a fantastic series. You really knocked it out of the park 🐠💯❤👏
Absolutely amazing video... this is what makes breeding fish so exciting 😊 great selection and beautiful fish... good luck with upcoming generations! 💪🏻
From your final picks I would have paired male 1 with female 4 and then the other 2. I think you would arrive at the color you’re looking for quicker, and with the number of fish in a spawn and the number of genetic combinations, chances are you’ll get the form you’re looking for. (spoken as a molecular biologist not a fish breeder, though a betta-obsessed keeper 😉)
@@SimplyBetta Aw well you have a good foundation and it shows! I have an M. S. in biology and spent 25 yrs in research labs before fate changed my hats, now in the biosafety profession. I love your videos and your betta keeping tips and tricks!!! You do great work!!! 🙂👍🏼 Howdy from Texas!
Absolutely wonderful video Taylor!! You covered every aspect and the thought processes that has helped you achieve these absolutely gorgeous betta fish! You have done a phenomenal job on your research, experience and all we should consider when spawning them!! Thanks I hope you and your family have a very blessed day!!🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
Great vid and I enjoyed your talk, you are really a bettaholic 🙈 about your desired traits, you always have to work more lines to get any desired traits. So for me is body the first, than the fins and than the color. 😉 But love your plans for this line, like Joep mennaged, take two pairs next to eachother to start two lines wich you later also can cross again 😍 Much good luck with these betta's.
Thanks for the comment! I agree, I should have talked about keeping multiple lines. Oh well, I'll mention that on my next video, or whatever next project line I pick up :) I told Joep I got greedy for gold by choosing the colorful female over the female with better form, hah! Oh well. live and learn ;P
Hey there! So I don't know if this is a good pair and you tell me if this isn't a good idea. I have a GORGEOUS healthy samurai HMPK male, and a healthy cobalt blue alien female. So far, from what I can tell her genetics would primarily take over. I think the "wild type" pattern on her is dominant, and the blue is dominant over black. However I do know that there are layers... and that part confuses me. They both have the metallic part, but he only does one half of his body. What makes samurai/mambas half metallic? As for fins, I'm assuming him having halfmoon would cause the offspring tails to be a but longer, but not as long as his. Maybe an inbetween. Is this an ethical pair? I also want to know your opinion on samurai/mamba breeding. I have heard some day its unethical due to diamond eye. My understanding of genetics is still kinda basic, so thank you for any help you can provide! Edit: I see where you talk about layers! Do you have any idea where I can look to get a good outline of colors and layers and a good understanding of it? It helped to hear you say weed out any male with red, because you didn't want that red layer!
I would've swapped the end pairings, but chosen the same fish. In your opinion, are fully green betta really such a rare thing? I enjoyed your video and look forward to more. Thank you!🎉
male 12 is the most gorgeous one. and i dont care about them not flaring. it's a personality mutation. more docile. some people may be very fond of that.
I keep it simple...frist spawn by accident. LOL. I went with braun and brain. the male had the brain big veil tail, the female was the biggest crown I have ever seen. they made babies. Upon fry growing, some were dark within 20 days, some white, translucent.. tiny, medium and big. all in the same tank, same food. I have 40 days to go... I am amazed every day.
What a very well done, and interesting video! I just got started with my first betta a short time ago, but am already in love with my halfmoon betta. Your expertise is far beyond me, obviously, but still found your video very interesting. Your personality is also very amazing, and contributes so much to the video!
I can't wait to get my pair of api api! I think it's almost time! I have 5 tanks set up and cycled! The plants are doing well, and I think they will be happy fish! A 10 gallom tank for the male and a 10 gallon tank for the female, and three 20 gallon long grow out tanks... just in case, and a 75 for the girls to hang out in! I have 6 grow out tanks for my other betta grow out tanks, 2 tanks per nest, I try and do one nest per month! But I only have 40 gallon breeders for the female hang out tank, one per pair of tanks for a total of three. My LFS is very excited for me to breed api api! The last batch of pretty galaxy koi bettas I brought to them, they sold for $50 per male, which was pretty cool! I definitely need to bump up my prices 😂
I have an halfmoon plakat as my first betta and God he's handsome! Then now I have 20+ beautiful bettas. I got obsessed with the long fins i have now 2 copper halfmoons, 2 black orchids I'll soon breed them. I really love the copper right now!
Any other authors in the comments? I'm just here to learn about halfmoon bettas (not necessarily the breeding part), though, I doubt yall could guess why.
Thanks for the informative video. I'm about to attempt to breed my first pair of bettas! This really helped with characteristics to look for and choose!
Honestly I'd be more forgiving in breeder selection except color and much harsher on spawn. Better to cross cross cross and have a large genetic pool where your only keeping the top 1% of fish. Excellent fish have terrible babies all the time and given a big enough spawn terrible fish have excellent babies. I'd pick color first then worry about the rest because the rest isn't wholly genetic anyway.
I am so sorry to objectify you but man I have a serious crush haha! Great info too! ive just started getting into breeding Bettas and you channel is like a bible! Thanks for all the help and advice!
Nice video. However, I would believe going for color would be the highest priority. Glad you are giving female 4 a chance because she is the only one with the gold tinge.
1yr old video, almost to the day. But this type of video but for more generations would be super interesting. And as for what I'd do, I'd try to pair another pair unrelated but same colors. And then pair up those babies to this ones. Pair 'pair A' with the goal to create mainly one look and pair 'pair B' to create another look and when A+B babies are combined to try to get all in one in less generations. I don't know if that's possible with fish but that's something I'd try.
Nice and informative video thanks❤😊 @Simply Betta . I have a doubt can you please give me the answer of it? What did you mean by the generation? Is it generation means same man and female bleeding in multiple time or you bleeding their babies .are you bleeding firstly selective male and female then you select their babies breed them select another babies from their babies selecting them and making a third generation.😅
How Do you breed the half moon beta for fin size and confirmation because the half moons I’m getting have small fins a little bit bigger than a female but not the way yours look , could you actually breed Halfmoon male to a long fin regular female and then select babies from that and then Bree back again to half Moon female and just keep trying to breed for long fins
Where would you recommend buying betta? Im looking for a halfmoon galaxy koi to possibly start a breeding program but cant find anything im looking for. I'll find an awesome colouration but the ventral fin is too long, or the caudal fin is too round, or the topline is too flat
The ventral or anal fins which you call the "hands" are actually the legs. The pectoral fins behind the gills are the hands instead . Later in evolution they will develop into arms and legs in tetrapoda (amphibians, reptiles birds and mammals)
Besides form and finage, what about about health? Do these lines carry genetic defects that make them more susceptible to stuff like tumors(which are becoming more common in betta fish)? Lots of people should not be breeding fish, people who don’t put thought into genetics or time into their fish should not be allowed to fish. I’m glad you are considering health, as health should come first before mutations.
"i have a link down below if you want to see that video too" oh noo Taylor, no need to. I have raided your profile over and over, I have watched them all. Always waiting for new content. The breakdown of your fish room has given me TONS of ideas to do something else with mine. Keep it going, you are one of the most lovely fish-tubers on the internet :D
Have you ever had a male betta that none of the females seem to be interested in? He makes a huge thick bubble nest. Idk what I’m doing wrong. Any help would be amazing :)
Am rewatching vids for background noise. So excited for the return of the fish room and breeding program, id love to see the variety of results from the second generation. Question, what happens to the fishes who dont cut it? Do they go to the pet store?
Just found you’re channel, and found this video very interesting. Just out of curiosity if you haven’t already could you possibly do a series of how you breed through generations to get your ideal fish?
Out of curiosity I kind of really like the top line that you called spoon I believe its adorable and gives them a kissy face is there any reason other than person preference that would make a fish this shape unhealthy? They are all stunning in my opinion thank you ever so much for sharing and best wishes always...

I knew I recognized ur name/picture! Thanks for stopping by our little channel and spending some time with us! Hope to see more of ya if I can help in any way! Have a good day! 🥳🥳
Hello! haha my pleasure, I love your enthusiasm for your hobby and animals. I'm getting my first Leo soon and I'm excited! I'm considering trying the breeding and raising process at least once in my life, maybe next year!
Thank you I love you videos I found this sooooo helpful.
Hi God bless all of y'all and always know that God and his son Jesus both love all of y'all in Jesus mighty name I pray Amen.
I love these and can’t wait for the next update! This makes me want to breed bettas!
For some reason I took a liking to male 12. I wouldn’t use him for breeding but he’s just has this cuteness that I love🥺
He is cute ☺
My favorites from the beginning were male 11 and female 3! I LOVE their coloring and form so much. Although the pairs you chose will produce some stunning offspring 😍
Right on!
Same here! They were my #1's. I think they'll have some stunning babies.
I really learned a lot from this video, thank you.
wow these are my favourite types of videos! genetics are so dang interesting! and you explain everything so well!!!!!
I appreciate that :)
This was so cool! I loved how well you explained your choices, thinking process and why you ultimately choose what you did. I wish you didn't have to scrap the project as it would have made a fantastic series. You really knocked it out of the park 🐠💯❤👏
Thank you so much! : )
Absolutely amazing video... this is what makes breeding fish so exciting 😊 great selection and beautiful fish... good luck with upcoming generations! 💪🏻
Thanks so much!
Nice.....supporter from MALAYSIA..👏👏👏
Thanks for explaining your thoughts on the breading project.
Thanks for your thoughts fellow biologist! Actually I dropped out after year 3 so I don't count T_T
I don't even have fish and yet I can't stop watching your videos (:
I get a deyabo on this video
I was about 12 like you were about this gold female. It was like love :D
Great job I'm new to the breeding Betta game and your videos are very helpful so thank you keep up the great work 🎉
Absolutely wonderful video Taylor!! You covered every aspect and the thought processes that has helped you achieve these absolutely gorgeous betta fish! This is the very reason I enjoy watching your informative videos. I have not I have not bred bettas yet, but someday....
You have done a phenomenal job on your research, experience and all we should consider when spawning them!! Thanks I hope you and your family have a very blessed day!!🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
You're so kind! Thank youuuu Mary
Great vid and I enjoyed your talk, you are really a bettaholic 🙈 about your desired traits, you always have to work more lines to get any desired traits. So for me is body the first, than the fins and than the color. 😉 But love your plans for this line, like Joep mennaged, take two pairs next to eachother to start two lines wich you later also can cross again 😍
Much good luck with these betta's.
Thanks for the comment! I agree, I should have talked about keeping multiple lines. Oh well, I'll mention that on my next video, or whatever next project line I pick up :)
I told Joep I got greedy for gold by choosing the colorful female over the female with better form, hah! Oh well. live and learn ;P
@@SimplyBetta that's the spirit and that's what breeding and keeping all is about 😊 good luck and keep up the good work ❤️
Super helpful video!
Thank yooooou
Keep doing these kiddo!! Glad to see you back!!
Hello, and thank you :)
Mantap
How do I tell a "strong betta" apart from a hunchback? They both have a lot of back. 😅
Poor male 12. Not being aggressive = no girlfriend
She's into betta fish, not beta fish.
@@quitlife9279 too good 😂
Wow saya pikir di negara anda tidak ada Betta fish saya sangat terkesan ternyata disana lebih besar sukses selalu
Hi taylor??? swift?? 😅
Quick question:
Did you ship, to Australia???
Every betta with x...iam very much willing to adopt.
My betta just spawned today but i don't know what to feed the fry so they can survive
I feed infusoria, or tiny live foods like microworms or vinegar eels. After a few days I use baby brine shrimp
@@SimplyBetta thanks for helping
You ❤️ them 🐠🐠🐠and I ❤️ you! ☺️
🤗
Amazing! How do you continue the generations? Any advise? Thank you for all the knowlede.
This was so cool to watch. #TheBettaBachelor
But the 5
Great video! Came over from KGTropicals. New sub!
I have never really thought about bettas that way! I just choose one that looks healthy and colorful. Thanks for the extra insight!
nice video ... just want to share my opinion .. usually the body shape of betta will follow the mother gen & male betta will brings the colour ... 🥰
Thank you for this video. I needed this education. I'm sure I'll be watching it numerous more times.
Hello, will Bettas mate if the female does not have eggs ready to spawn? Thank you in advance
Black with Solar flare orange tipped fins would be amazing.
Any other authors in the comments?
I'm just here to learn about halfmoon bettas (not necessarily the breeding part), though, I doubt yall could guess why.
dont even think about what people say,..actually, im from malaysia, I also select fish like yours
Thanks for the informative video. I'm about to attempt to breed my first pair of bettas! This really helped with characteristics to look for and choose!
Ever bred 2 similar colored Betta and they spawn some fry with completely different colors?
I could've sworn that everything else I've read said short fin single tail is dominant over LT
This is an incredibly interesting video on a topic I never knew I could care about. Your presentation was excellent. Keep doing more videos like this.
I'd love more content like this. You have some really pretty fish. Can't wait till u start selling again.
Hi
How can we identify a shortfin female? What's the difference between shortfin and halfmoon female😇
I like you mam ❤️ we also the same hobby I am Betta fish breeder from Philippines 🇵🇭
Please do a video on third generation. Outcome and results of selective breeding round 3.
I like 2 and 6 males! I wish I lived in the US ! Would love to order from you if I did! You are an amazing breeder! Great video!
Awesome job!!
I'm soo interested in male #12!!!
Someday we'll gonna be successful in life 🤗
Wait, you paired related fish? I’m just getting into breeding !
Have you ever had a male betta that none of the females seem to be interested in? He makes a huge thick bubble nest. Idk what I’m doing wrong. Any help would be amazing :)
This is very helpful thanks for sharing.
New to the channel, very informative, but this is just Penny talking about beta fish.
I actually prefer female bettas now. I just loss my plucky white girl, but she was the start of me getting to know female bettas.
I’m very invested please do continue
I’d have swapped the pairings but I agree with everything else
Out of curiosity I kind of really like the top line that you called spoon I believe its adorable and gives them a kissy face is there any reason other than person preference that would make a fish this shape unhealthy? They are all stunning in my opinion thank you ever so much for sharing and best wishes always...
