Supercharged VW Beetle doing Dyno Pulls with an AMR500

  • I was finally able to get some dyno time with my supercharged 1600. It did not disappoint me. Keep in mind this is a stock long block 1600 using the factory cam and heads. Sorry for the length, it was hard to fit 2 hours into just a few minutes.
I was able to surpass all my goals with this combo. I wanted to run 2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile. Previously with ITBs, I ran 18 seconds. Now I am able to do a 15.47! I was shooting for 90 wheel HP and 120 ft-lbs of torque and managed 93rwhp and 127 ft-lbs. All that torque is at 2-2500 and makes for a heck of a driver :)
Dyno plot is at the end of the video with ITBs, 8psi, and 11.5 PSI.

Beetle horsepower is a funny thing. Non vw guys laugh at our small numbers but don’t realize just how light these cars are. 120hp bug will whoop a mustang at a light. My little fiberglass Manx feels like the front tires will come off the ground and it only makes about 70hp :) I pulled on my buddies 400hp impala ss and he just about crapped his pants. Lol. This video is great because I had wondered what this blower could do on either of my bugs. This looks fun!

Keep coming back to this video for inspiration. Building something crazy at the moment with stockish 1600 lump and Mercedes m45 blower. Aiming for 10psi or so boost and having it switchable on and off for kicks. Impressive figures for 11 psi on yours and that's rwhp too. Wonder what percentage the transmission eats.... Got to be 20% or so as bone stock 50 odd bhp engine usually in 40bhp zone on dyno.

It's hard to be sure from the video, but are the wheels running significantly forward of the center line of the roller? If so, is it safe to move the car back so the tires are centered on the roller (I don't know anything about proper dyno operation)?
If the center of the rear wheels is in front of (or behind) the center of the roller, then the camber in the rear will force the tires to scrub sideways to some degree as the rotate. Imagine if you had a roller right at the back of the tires (at the 9:00 o'clock position looking at the right tire). Here the slip angle of the tire would match the camber angle. The scrub will be much less when the roller is near the 6:00 o'clock position, but only at the 6:00 o'clock position will the scrub be zero (assuming a zero running toe setting).
I don't know how much power the tire scrub could eat up - probably not really enough to be noticeable. Somewhere in the one horsepower range wouldn't surprise me.

You can literally get a 2004 beetle that looks just like this one and really the only difference is basically the fuel injection and the radio. You can get a super tricked out bug from Mexico for 5-6k…. Not sure what the import fees would be to make it legal I.
