Tom, Thank you for a clear explanation of recall shooting functions hold! I just programmed my Z8 with your settings for wildlife photography. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks. Had this on the D5 but you had to hold the button down. I use it for birds in the sky which need extra EV, and birds below the horizon which do not. I had not found it in the much longer menus of the Z9 but RUclips saves the day again.
@@TomReplogle The issue, NO PROBLEM, is that when recalling , and chimping or +/- adjustment takes you back - and of course that sticky feature is a nuisance when shooting events.
Hey Tom, your channel is really good. But I was shocked when I saw that you had only 35 subscribers. I thought, "This can't be right." Then I realized you only launched your channel recently. If you enjoy this RUclips thing, and stick with it, I think you'll find a substantial audience. You're natural and comfortable in front of the camera, and from what I've seen so far, you seem to have a good sense of what your audience might want to see and learn. Good luck!
Thank you so much! You made my night! Coming up on my 1 month anniversary on RUclips!🎉 I created the channel about a year or so before I actually made a video this past April….I was 🐔 …lol. I’m really enjoying creating the videos…still have a lot to learn but having a blast doing it. Thanks again!
Thanks Terry! That's exactly what I was thinking. I have a shooting bank for wildlife & sports but I may be able to use that for something else now. Cheers!
One new channel to another - very good content! I've been struggling with this function on my Z9, and I think the main problem is that all your post-recall-adjustments are sticky, as you demonstrated. I was hoping for more of a hard setup that I can only modify via the menu. But as you say, one has to be aware of how it works and use it accordingly. I also use the Fn2 button for it.
Thanks! Yes I wish it was a hard setting too. That should easily be fixed with a firmware update if people let Nikon know about it. Good luck with your channel!!
@@TomReplogle Thanks for replying. I noticed there is a photo shooting bank, settings bank, and video shooting bank. Wondering what the difference is between the shooting bank and the setting bank.
@@rjzucker Ah, gotcha. Essentially, those banks allow you to save settings for different styles of photography or situations for "quick" access. I have my "I menu" set up so that I can access and switch between banks quickly. I have my banks set up for Aerials, Landscape/Tripod, Handheld, and Sports. I have those banks custom named for both the Photo Shooting and Custom Setting Banks. I wish Nikon would just consolodate all the settings so that we don't have to change two different sets of banks but it is what it is. I made a video on how to set it up here --> ruclips.net/video/qmMrusJsYKY/видео.html
I have it set up kinda opposite: I "normally" am out stalking birdies so set my Fn1 button up with the recall settings function, to shoot single shot, etc. Well, now I'm having to learn front button focus all over again (actually, I see less of a need for BBF with this camera!) so I guess I *wish* Nikon woulda figured that out, but in a perverse way, it's OK! It's a wonderful function...
Nice video. I wish I could use the Fn buttons to select the bank settings. Like bank A (F1)is for Landscape. Bank B (F2)for wildlife. Bank C (F3) for potraits. :-)
Thanks! Yes, it would be great if the Custom and Shooting banks were combined and allowed to be assigned to function buttons....that would be pretty sweet! Thanks for watching!
Hi Tom, nice content and video. I have just unboxed my Z9 and am having trouble saving the Fn buttons assigned to Banks. I have assigned the fn buttons in the menu but they all show as Bank A. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks! The function buttons are menu bank specific. For example, I have a bank for my landscape shots (on a tripod) and use the Fn2 button for “Recall Shooting Functions” but on my bank for wildlife/sports I have Fn2 assigned differently. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
@@TomReplogle maybe a video explaining what a BANK is and why we want to use it is in order? The Z 9 does so much more than my 850 which I left in BBF, single point, auto ISO - and that worked for most everything
So when you program say Fn2 to recall your shooting functions, does that program it for all the banks, A,B,C and D? Or do you have to go to each bank and program it separately while in the bank? Thanks for the video, you done good.
Thanks Teri! Yes you have to program it for each bank while that bank is selected. For example, I have a tripod (landscape) bank and a general/handheld bank that I programmed it for, but my aerials and sports banks I have the FN button assigned to something else. I may end up getting rid of the sports bank....but haven't quite yet. Still testing everything out. Thanks for watching!
@@TomReplogle I have found that I cannot have separate RSF speed and aperture setting in different Banks. eg I wanted an RSF of 1/3200 F4 in Bank A and an RSF of 1/320 F7.1 in bank B. The software would retain the 1/320 F7.1 in Both A & B banks assuming I updated B after A. If I updated the RSF settings of A after B I would get 1/3200 F4 in both RSF setting in banks A & B. I would be interested if you agree and can replicate. Other RSF settings such as AF and animal subject detection seem to work fine and can have different RSF values in seperate banks.
@@rwilso15 You are absolutely correct. I have a video that is dropping in a few hours that demonstrates what you describe. It would be nice if Nikon would update it in a future firmware update. ..fingers crossed. Thanks for watching!!
I'm new to Nikon Z9, my previous Nikon Z7ii and Sony A1, both have U1, U2 and U3 at the mode dial but Nikon Z9 these U1, U2 and U3 are not there, or these are hiddened somewhere...if anyone can help me
Hey Nik, thanks for watching! The Z9 doesn't have the User settings but instead has the photo shooting and custom settings menu instead. I have a video on setting those here: ruclips.net/video/qmMrusJsYKY/видео.html
That U1-U3 missing on the Z9 is beyond my understanding when shooting events. U1-U4 would even have been ideal. Going to & through the banks is a PITA. Great if not under pressure and a single subject, but if under pressure to catch every different 'actor/model' under different conditions, the banks - until I learn to use them! - are useless. Too much to say, too little space ....
The more I use the Z9, the more I think the engineers should spend 30 days shooting with an M1X. Certain features need to be programmed in with hard controls, not via emulation. Links between settings become tedious. That lack of saving menus tto non volatile RAM is awful. Too many work arounds due to lack of controls.
Such an amazing feature! Thank you for the break down! This will come in handy for my sports photography!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
