Hello Ricci, This look like a fun time. I must say I did my first Show Jumping event with thee Z9, what an amazing camera the Z9 is now. Looking forwards to getting this software. So thank you for this and all your super videos. Keep well, keep safe and enjoying your photography.
Hi Ricci, I have always appreciated your thorough testing however I have come across a problem with the Z9 and would like you to identify if its an issue with my camera. For my Z9 camera I cannot get 20 fps. 1. Menu Settings, A1 set to focus priority. 2. Af/c mode 3. 20 fps mode. 4. Whilst focusing either back button or shutter button focusing (Settings A6 af activation does not matter) At any Aperture between f6.3 - f22 camera does not get 20 fps and stutters. Is this replica-table on your end or is it a fault with my camera. It occurs with z24-70, z85 1.8, Nikon f mount 80-400, nikon 105 f mount 2.8. It does not occur with 2 tamron lenses I have, however they do not have the Linkage aperture lever on the lens (unlike the f mount G lenses that do have it).
Thanks Ricci for the great presentation. I am a RAW shooter, and am disappointed with the pre-release doesn’t extend to the C20 Raw. In fact, I was hoping the 20 fps RAW could be increased to 30fps. Perhaps hoping too much. 😄😄 One more thing, it will be great if the timer and frame selection can be brought back in the iMenu like the Z7II. Cheers 🍻

I wouldn't mind to have it in raw even just for shortest durations of say 0.3 or 0.5 pre release. or even only for smaller raw fps option of 10-15 fps (if its a pipeline buffer issue). do you think it might be possible in raw in a future update ?
I agree, or maybe as a compromise, be able to shoot in RAW once the shutter is fully pressed but still have the pre/post capture in 30/120fps jpeg. It's better to get that 'missed' moment in jpg than not at all.
I’m unsure if it will be able to do raw in the future maybe with new faster cards and High efficiency raw Nikon held 8k 60 back to wait for faster cf cards so maybe they are waiting for even faster cf cards for other things

Thanks Ricci for your comprehensive breakdown here. One concern that I'm increasingly hearing is from sports photographers shooting indoors under certain LED lighting (probably PWM control in particular) are banding issues that Nikon's flicker reduction algorithm is just not eliminating. One person is going as far as suggesting that leaving out the mechanical shutter was little more than cost cutting exercise that other manufacturers will not follow. Nikon need to investigate this ASAP. It would highly damaging to Nikon's reputation if the Z9's replacement resorted to having a mechanical shutter. My gut reaction is this issue that admittedly effects a minority of sports pros can be sorted by a firmware update.
Thank you for doing this Ricci - these videos are fantastic and Nikon is just crushing it across social media lately with video updates, having pros with gear videos on launch day etc. Excited for the future!
Closing remarks @29:31 - I do not believe in conspiracy theories but this is an excellent example of what a camera company can actually do when it's business managers are NOT trying to protect other models in their product line so as to not cannibalize sales. Nikon also does not have to worry about competing with smartphone technology capabilities. The Z9 is both impressive technically as well as value for the money and equally impressive firmware updates. This is a win-win for both the Nikon company and their customers. Bravo!
Hi Ricci, I don't want to sound like a broken record, so I won't say it this time, but suffice to say I am a Z6ii owner and love the camera.... I have heard that the firmware is very close now. What I wanted to say was, where can we make suggestions (for firmware updates)? Through using the camera (I have taken over 8,000 shots in about 4 months) we get an idea of what we'd like to see and perhaps we don't know whether it is possible to implement, but we don't have anywhere (to my knowledge) we can go to make suggestions. It would be a useful exercise for Nikon, wouldn't it? I mean, I heard about their investors report, Nikon up to 2030, where I am sure they say they want to work closer with content creators... what about a suggestions page?
Great update but tell me if nikon will consider 8k 10 bits 4.2.2 instead of 4.2.0 and why not 24p instead of 23.98.Thanks I have 2 Z9.I like all your videos. Thanks
Thank you for the very detailed breakdown. The pre capture is very promising! I've ordered mine 1st day of announcement (October) but still haven't received it. 😵
Hi Ricci and always thank you for your videos. They are a great source of information. Do you think we will ever see a pre capture RAW option in the Z8-Z9 cameras? Cheers
Wow. I feel slightly dizzy. I can't wait to install the update and play with the new options. I am also stoked about improvements to 3D tracking and other AF performance. Hopefully, Adobe will soon support the new video codecs.
Thanks Ricci! Looks like a bunch of good stuff to add to the Z9. Just got mine yesterday so learning, adapting, setting it up. Really appreciate your simple, direct approach to your videos, especially explaining complex features. I may have missed it but it seems you said that you were planning on doing a video on your Z9 evf settings. Hope to learn how you have yours setup as a fellow wildlife shooter, a starting point would be great, especially since this is my first mirrorless.
A question for a future video, is it possible with focus point assignment to FN buttons to essentially set focusing marks like a focus puller would (but autofocus)? Could be especially interesting with the external grip! Essentially: start rolling camera a the first mark, press FN1 and either af-on or use af-f, let it hit, then press FN 2 for another mark and engage af again.
After the update the recording fail regards CF Card Speed issue , sow my tow CF cards are failed : 1-Delkin Devices 2TB Power CFexpress Type B Memory Card (DCFX1-2TB) 2-Sony 512GB Tough CEB-G Series CFexpress Type B Memory So my Question : Is (AV PRO CFexpress XT Type B Card | 660 GB) will works ? Please advise because i did that order . Regards
Exciting update! I’d love to hear more about the Fast AF-ON function for rack focus. I also wish they will eventually add the option to 3D tracking like they just did for Recall shooting function where once you locked on the subject you don’t need to continuously press the back button to keep tracking.
Just out of interest, have a 256GB and 128GB Lexar professional cfexpress type B cards in my Z9 , recorded at 8K 30 so far with no issues. The issue I am having is editing N-RAW in davinci resolve 18 in that the resolution in stepped down to FHD or less while playing then abruptly returns to 4K when paused. Very noticeable pixelation, making tuning image quality into educated guess work. Also if in settings I use crop , the image is displayed as if it were FHD. Maddening. Great video saved a lot of wading through the pdf.
It’s not too long ago some self proclaimed experts were suggesting Nikon’s days were over, oh how wrong they were 🤣😂🤣 Bring it on Nikon, thanks Ricci 😀👏👍
Ricci - @11.22 seconds, you said something that will be a game changer.....I think the best autofocus mechanism in the industry....where using a fairly small autofocus point we pick the subject using AI and then using back button AF transfer it automatically over to 3D autofocus....this is something that another you tuber...Hudson Henry discussed.
Hi Ricci--- It appears that in the final 2.00 you cannot change the size of W-C1 and W-C2 from the i menu. You have to go to the Photo Shooting Menu > AF-area mode and configure it from there. I don't see the new middle "OK" option to change the size of the AF area. I still only have i return and OK. Am I missing something? Seems to be an issue if you have the EVF set to Priority Mode. In the other modes you can access the W-C1 and W-C2 from the i menu on the back screen. You can see and jump to the size change via the EVF in Priority mode. Weird.
I was so excited for the pre capture, now after knowing its only for JPEGs breaks my heart completely, being a birder JPEGs would be useless for me so does this feature. This could have been a game changer if Nikon would have supported Raw format with it. Thanks a lot Ricci for the detailed information.
Ricci, are there any bug fixes, such as a fix for the occasional freeze up related to the protective shutter being set to close at powerdown? Thank you very much. I'm still looking forward to getting my Z9 and 100-400.
Great stuff from Ricci. Always clear explanations. I do not have such a pro camera, but looking at the back screen of the Z9 I am truly frightened by the wide array of settings available. I’m not sure it’s a winning strategy
Excellent video Ricci. Thank you for all of the great information, I can't wait for the new AF features! Cheers! You better have some fast memory cards for Pre capture.
Hi Ricci! I wonder if there is Pre-capture option for video recording on Z9 (2.0 software). I use pre-capture for stills and love it, but couldn't find it for video. Thx a lot for your channel!
Just updated this and have been finding bugs - seems like the number of options for the i-menu have been reduced? For example, I can no longer have 'release mode' in the i-menu, which is really annoying...
Hey Ricci! Love your video - as always very informative. Do you think it’s possible for Nikon to implement 12-bit raw stills in the Z 9? And also to increase the max stills frame rate, given it can do 8k60 at 12 bit? Perhaps in the summer firmware update? 😂
Ricci, now that I've downloaded the Z9 Firmware Update 2.0, I'm a little baffled by some of Nikons photos on it's site and this video doesn't address the issue. It appears on Nikon's website that not only can the box size be altered (as you do in this video) but that your vertical line can be moved right or left (for example, ir thee is a specific runner you want to capture (outside left or outside right). I haven't found a way to move the AF box either Up, down, right , left. How is this done or is there something I'm missing in Nikon's promotional slides?
Hi, thanks for the video update, always look forward to seeing your take on new releases so thank you. I just wondered if we would see any Z II demos for the updated AF features, or is it to minor to discuss? I hope Nikon have fixed the back focus issue, as it sometimes drives me round the bend. Thanks again
@@RicciTalks I was reading about TicoRaw/N-Raw flexibilities. they have mentioned its capable to have compression ratio from 16:1 to 2:1 and looking at data rate of 12:1 B-Raw which is kinda similar to N-Raw its technically possible to run 12:1 and 16:1 compression ratio N-Raw on Z6II/Z7II. i am wondering if Nikon is not going to announce Z6III and Z7III soon can they put N-Raw in Z6II Z7II. because looking at the data rate dual expeed 6 can handle its not impossible to have 12:1 or 16:1 4k N-Raw on both bodies.
@@RicciTalks so do you think a significant firmware update for the z6ii and Z7ii is close to being released ? And what do you expect they might change or improve on that update ? Thanks 🙏🏻
Hi Ricci, thanks for your videos. I don’t have a Z9 yet but I just want to have an idea. What’s the recording limit for 4k 120p in N-Log with the Angelbird 512gb? Thank you!
Thank you for the update. I did update my firmware and I was particularly interested in changing function button to toggle versus hold but could not figure out how to do that, even after I went back a reviewed that part of your video. Could you provide a little more detail on how to do that? I was hoping to find an updated reference manual with the firmware update but could not find that on line. Do you know if one is available and if so where to find it? I checked the Nikon website and did not find it. Thanks.
Hi Ricci, great video! Does RSF (Hold) use the same settings as RSF or can I configure them separately? I'd love to use RSF on a button to slow down my shutter speed (say for a perched bird) and then RSF (hold) to enable/disable subject detection. Would be nice to do all this without it being a choice of one or the other depending on settings banks.
@@RicciTalks I asked this here and on the Nikon Canada video before your quick reply. They replied last night with "Hey Phil, it uses the settings from the regular RSF, so you aren’t able to configure two separate settings. Good idea for the future though!" - so now I have 2 polar opposite answers! As a fellow countryman I guess I'll believe you for now and I'll just have to see on Wednesday! 🤣
Watch those Anglebird cards. I have a pair of 512 SE cards. One of them has failed after only a few shoots with my Z9. If I shoot with it, the Z9 EVF glitches while shooting and files aren't recorded reliably.
Hi Ricci, I am on the verge of getting a Z9 but am concerned about the pose process ie editing. I use Premier pro and wondered if the codecs will be an issue with this program? Any advice is appreciated.
What Nikon really needs to do is implement auto focus-box movement - e.g. if my chosen auto-focus area is set to a box on the left (because I am taking photos of a subject looking to the right of frame [subject's left]) and then the subject looks to their right (and so I need to compose to the right so that the subject is looking into the frame), what needs to happen is my chosen auto-focus box needs to shift to the right side of the frame... voila! The perfect focusing system indeed! This could be implemented across the whole of the focusing system and would avoid manually trying to deal with this issue. Of course, the auto-eye and subject recognition in cameras these days is slowly taking out the need for this sort of thing, but it would still be a fantastic option. Think subject recognition with auto-eye focus of a child/person/bird/animal looking left to right rapidly with your composition needing to move rapidly! Anyway, great video Ricci...
Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions for my morning train journey! We're finally getting a pre-capture feature - yass, totally awesome! (I think I chuckled a bit out loud - people looked) Definitely a stand-out feature of the OM system and something that'll be very welcome on my Z9... except it's only for the 30/120 fps jpeg modes - booo!! I will definitely try it out and probably use it, but if it was available in the RAW mode I'd probably use it a lot more of the time because I wouldn't have to change anything to activate it. Any ideas why this restriction is there? I imagine the high speed jpeg modes might actually be something more like video and frame extraction in terms of the processing pipeline, so different to the RAW process. Anyway, I really hope that this is a road that Nikon decide to continue along and maybe add pre-capture for RAW shooting in the Z9 at a later date or perhaps in a future camera body...
Guess the restriction is because of buffer space available (has to fit 2 seconds or more of images). Still, if you can do it with JPEGs at 30fps, it should be possible with RAWs at 20fps, with compression set to max. Would be nice if it got added later as a third high speed mode (C20).
BTW, the Resolve 17.4.6 update has supposedly added support for N-RAW on M1 Max processors (native, not Rosetta). Not sure about other Apple silicon processors
Hey Ricci, great video as always. How much is the bitrate difference between N-Raw and Prores Raw? Is Prores Raw much larger than N-Raw and is that the reason that it's not available for 4K 120 and 8K resolutions?
Thanks for this, Ricci. I was so excited to try the N-RAW 8K .... As a Mac and Final Cut user (soon to be M1 when my Studio arrives) I guess I'll have to wait and see if Apple adds support but won't hold my breath. Don't have time to learn DaVinci so I guess it's ProRes for me. That tops out at 4K though, eh? Edit: ah, up to 5.4K. That's pretty good.
I’m also a final cut user but I don’t see me needed to record 8k raw too often 😊 For what it’s worth running davinci though Rosetta seemed nice and smooth even with 8k raw files but yes I’d still love to see native support
Do you know if there is a way to shoot 20fps and auto focus at 20 different points? This would be amazing for shooting small spiders. You could then stack the pictures in photo shop. Spiders move fast, but 20fps could get a mazing shots all in focus at different points.
what would have been useful is to have the ability to recall more than one set of functions when two buttons are assigned. wakey wakey Nikon this one was obvious. 😁both lens function buttons are really useful for this.
Thank you Ricci for the Video. 🙂 (and Nikon for the improvements 😊) - have they brought back the d4 Exposure delay mode? (for Astro, Studio, etc) - it would be good to have 5-digit for the image numbering. - Which of the "officially compatible" Cf-Express card are recommended and don't get to hot?
No exposure delay No change to file number either sadly The only “official recommended” cards are the pro grade and nikon CFe cards both of which I don’t use
Thank you for this video as always a great job. Can you expand a bit on your comment that 3D tracking was improved?, In what way. Also were there any other improvements to existing AF modes?
Good news that Nikon are workign on the Z9 I am sure you have never been asked about this But do you think Nikon will do a Z6/Z7ii firware update soon?
Thanks again Ricci for the information you put out, my first check for anything Z9 at the moment. I’m thinking of getting the Angelbird se 512 model for video, it seems like a good choice (I have delkin black 128 at present) - unfortunately I am not sure if it will work with my sandisk pro cf express card reader, I’m also not liking the idea that I may have to update the Angelbird firmware so it’s compatible with my D850 and I need to do this on the Angelbird card reader which I dont have. Can you tell me if the Angelbird version 2 cards work with the Z9 and any other way to update the firmware (or if you have done it) and whether any card reader would at least read the Angelbird cards - thats the only things holding me back from purchasing Angelbird over the delkin blacks (however they are more expensive). Any insight or tests that you may have done on this would be great info. Regards.
Hi there, thanks for your interest in our Cards. the possibility of FW updates on cards will be widely used in the Industry the next years, as it makes sense. If I may point out, our Reader is not only able to do FW upgrades, but it has a very very helpful extra feature which is a write protection switch. experience shows that most card errors are caused by Windows or Mac OS or Lightroom writing garbage on cards during reading the cards. with our reader this is not the case. just a simple but very very helpful pro feature. maybe you keep that in mind for your decision. as for the other reader I don't see any reason why it should not be able to access our cards as they are fully within CFA spec. kind regards, Christoph / AB Team
@@AngelbirdMedia thanks for your reply, the professional sandisk reader I have does have a write protect. As I understand I will not be able to use the Angelbird on my d850 unless I update the firmware with the Angelbird card reader which I would need to purchase and also for updating future firmware on the cards, however Just to use on a Z9 and no d850 or future compatibilities is a shame because I really would have liked to have purchased an angelbird card and future Angelbird cards for our cameras.

Has there ever been a paid for firmware update with Nikon. I can’t remember one
Thanks for watching! 😊
@@RicciTalks I’ve been Nikon exclusively for 35 years, I’m not stopping now!🤣👍
Ricci - @11.22 seconds, you said something that will be a game changer.....I think the best autofocus mechanism in the industry....where using a fairly small autofocus point we pick the subject using AI and then using back button AF transfer it automatically over to 3D autofocus....this is something that another you tuber...Hudson Henry discussed.
Does using the slower shutters in video create clipping or choppy footage? Thank you for the video. Super helpful!
Thanks. Possibly the precaptire in raw had too much affect on viewfinder framerates
Ricci, are there any bug fixes, such as a fix for the occasional freeze up related to the protective shutter being set to close at powerdown? Thank you very much. I'm still looking forward to getting my Z9 and 100-400.
Can you please go over the 1.4 Z6ii-7ii updates?
No one is doing a good video explaining it fully.
Thank you
Thank you Ricci. So much more to get wrapped around. Great info! You STILL Rock!
If you get a chance could you do one of your updates on the 1.40 Mk II firmwares? I trust and value your opinion. Thank you
Thank you very much Ricci for your great review of the new features.
More Roc(k)-on Ricci I suspect!! 😂😉🤣
Great stuff from Ricci. Always clear explanations.
I do not have such a pro camera, but looking at the back screen of the Z9 I am truly frightened by the wide array of settings available. I’m not sure it’s a winning strategy
Have you seen the message below?
Excellent video Ricci. Thank you for all of the great information, I can't wait for the new AF features! Cheers! You better have some fast memory cards for Pre capture.
Hi Ricci! I wonder if there is Pre-capture option for video recording on Z9 (2.0 software). I use pre-capture for stills and love it, but couldn't find it for video. Thx a lot for your channel!
Just updated this and have been finding bugs - seems like the number of options for the i-menu have been reduced? For example, I can no longer have 'release mode' in the i-menu, which is really annoying...
Did a fast forward as soon as I see jpeg only for pre-shooting. No interested on anything else but RAW.
Trank you for explain the New Firmware. If there are improvement on Flicker with LED Lights?
This will be added in a Firmware update in summer !
@@RicciTalks Thanks for Information
How is this done or is there something I'm missing in Nikon's promotional slides?
this is excellent video as per usual and lots of new capabilities added with this new firmware. Bravo Nikon
I requested the Z6ii /Z7ii update so I could make a video covering it but I haven’t be able to get the update yet 😔
@@RicciTalks Thank you for the update, extremely grateful. Keep up the great work.
Thanks 🙏🏻
@Photo Bunny probably get one bigger update just before they release new camera versions and that will be it basically .
Thanks ricci
Great vid as always
Question. In resolve is the iso adjustable and can we recorded externally raw to a atomos ?
I'm digging the updates,...would like an EVF frame rate setting of 90 fps as well. The 120 fps is gonna suck battery juice like crazy!
Ricci Another fantastic insightful and professional presentation sir!! Nikon is on 🔥 So incredible that this FW is so futuristic!!!
Thank you as always !
Thank you Ricci great work as always!!
I also heard that now we could one key operating ISO but u didn't mention is it also tru? thanks for sharing
Hi Ricci, thanks for your videos. I don’t have a Z9 yet but I just want to have an idea. What’s the recording limit for 4k 120p in N-Log with the Angelbird 512gb? Thank you!
Thank you for the information.. can you please provide a link to Z9 N-RAW footage so we can test it.
They are configured separately
Great video - thanks! Will the new 1/6 ISO increments activate in auto ISO as or is this a manual-only setting? Thanks!
Have missed your tests and videos. Thanks Again
Thanks for watching them
Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions for my morning train journey!
I’m running 17.4.6
You have to run davinci in Rosetta to read the N-raw files
Davinci without Rosetta still runs but won’t read the N-raw files
Hey Ricci, great video as always.
How much is the bitrate difference between N-Raw and Prores Raw? Is Prores Raw much larger than N-Raw and is that the reason that it's not available for 4K 120 and 8K resolutions?
Really hoping they get rid of the banding I am suffering with some live gig shoots.
Is there any option in n-log raw to change ( saturation, contrast , brightnes, sharpness ) just like sdr picture profiles in camera ?
Thanks for this, Ricci. I was so excited to try the N-RAW 8K .... As a Mac and Final Cut user (soon to be M1 when my Studio arrives) I guess I'll have to wait and see if Apple adds support but won't hold my breath. Don't have time to learn DaVinci so I guess it's ProRes for me. That tops out at 4K though, eh? Edit: ah, up to 5.4K. That's pretty good.
I’m also a final cut user but I don’t see me needed to record 8k raw too often 😊
For what it’s worth running davinci though Rosetta seemed nice and smooth even with 8k raw files but yes I’d still love to see native support
@@RicciTalks I’m with you on that. Would like to take advantage of the N-RAW compression though. Cheers!
Do you know if there is a way to shoot 20fps and auto focus at 20 different points? This would be amazing for shooting small spiders. You could then stack the pictures in photo shop. Spiders move fast, but 20fps could get a mazing shots all in focus at different points.
Nikon Blowing Minds! 🤯❤️🙌🏼
what would have been useful is to have the ability to recall more than one set of functions when two buttons are assigned. wakey wakey Nikon this one was obvious. 😁both lens function buttons are really useful for this.
Thank you Ricci for the Video. 🙂 (and Nikon for the improvements 😊)
- have they brought back the d4 Exposure delay mode? (for Astro, Studio, etc)
- it would be good to have 5-digit for the image numbering.
- Which of the "officially compatible" Cf-Express card are recommended and don't get to hot?
No exposure delay
No change to file number either sadly
The only “official recommended” cards are the pro grade and nikon CFe cards both of which I don’t use
Thanks. Are you going test the 50 mm micro lens.
Thank you for this video as always a great job. Can you expand a bit on your comment that 3D tracking was improved?, In what way. Also were there any other improvements to existing AF modes?
It’s significantly improved in a few ways I actually took the part I spoke about it out of this video with the intention to cover it in another video
Sandisk extreme pro 512gb Type B 1700r 1400w do you think they would work with 8k 60?
Exciting!!! Thank you for sharing
Will the Atomos Ninja V+ record new resolutions/codecs? Also, if using an external recorder am I able to just record the H.265 (8/10-bit)
Cheers for sorting through the update!
Is there any hope for 8k 60fps / 4k 120 fps prores raw in future firmware update?
Odd, I don't get the 'new OK option'.... ? [at approx 10:50 of video].
Thank you, Ricci. You're the man.
super job. very informative, well done
Good news that Nikon are workign on the Z9
I am sure you have never been asked about this
But do you think Nikon will do a Z6/Z7ii firware update soon?
Announced at the same time available to download on the 20th too
@@RicciTalks Wow! Thanks for that
6:33 Did I hear you say "preCRAPture"? Aptly describes a lot of my photos.
Hi Ricci! How long can you record 4k 24p on a 512 GB card?
As I understand I will not be able to use the Angelbird on my d850 unless I update the firmware with the Angelbird card reader which I would need to purchase and also for updating future firmware on the cards, however Just to use on a Z9 and no d850 or future compatibilities is a shame because I really would have liked to have purchased an angelbird card and future Angelbird cards for our cameras.
is the oversampling feature working for 1080p ? 8k 50/60fps to ->1080p 50/60?
