I was thinking of that Polar Bear on the island when the Z9 was released. Not really wanting him to risk things or himself but that would be a use of the feature.
Fantastic, as a wildlife photographer Auto Capture was feature that I was waiting for. Now my Z9 can function as a trap-camera without any limitation on image quality. Now we need pre-capture-release in Raw.. Thanks Nikon.
Curious if Autocapture can fulfil some pre-release functions? Example Focusing on a stationary bird and setting the pre-capture to quickly detect movement as when the bird takes off (setting the speed level); if this works, it is easier, less labour intensive and in Raw!
@@quetharainteresting idea. i looked at this feature as more for use when the camera isn't manned- but this could be worth trying in certain situations. Please reply back if you have luck with this- I'll do the same, BUT i don't have any events planned in near future where i could test this.
Thank you Ricci for another top shelf production keeping all of us informed in detail of the latest on the Z family. Looking forward to putting these to use and watching your takes on the in depth use of the new improvements. Nikon has done such a great job with the Z family, and you are on top of it all in such a straight forward presentation. Well done Nikon and Well Done Ricci!!!
Thanks Ricci, concise and informative, as ever... It would be lovely to get a few tweeks for the Z6_2 via firmware, especially a little tightening up of some of the autofocus modes.
Hi, thank you for the interesting videos! About Auto capture: Did you notice, that the minimal distance, which can be set is not (!) the minimal distance, which you have for the particular lens for regular use, but seemingly the 20x of the focal length for the so called „prime“ lenses (not zooms)? As I tested, the minimal distance to set with auto capture is with the Z 800mm f6.3 16m(!) instead of regularly 5m. (With TC 2x 32m instead of 5m…) The corresponding values for Z 105mm MC 2,1m (instead of 29cm), for the Z 24-120mm 0,4m at 24mm, but it grows gradually to 2,4m up to the longest focal length for 120mm (which regularly allows to focus 0,4m to. For this lens zooming back to 24mm the minimal distance does‘t change again automatically to 40cm. It seems an allowed closest distance to set for the (not wide angel focal length) possible with auto capture limited by the software to the 20x of the particular (not wide angel) focal lens independently of its regular near focus capacity, which is much closer as that for auto capture (as I wrote the individual values for lenses I tested above). How do you think about? I mean, even if auto capture is generally a very good feature, at that point there is a very relevant limitation for wildlife photographer, with potential to improve this issue. I find it interesting, that up to now no reviews mentioned this issue. Even in the manual („addendum“ to firmware 4.0 there is no word about the limitation of the closest didtance, which differs from that, which the particular lens itself allows. Best regards Josef😮
👍Exposure delay, hurray. Now bring it to the Z8. Bring pre-release RAW support. That little delay after "very soon", something's coming. Z500 plz or 200-600 or Zf, my wish list is long.
Fantastic new features! Nikon have shown the tremendous capabilities of the Z9 as a platform for software and firmware development. In the past, adding features of this magnitude would usually require purchasing a new body. However, Nikon has demonstrated its ability to continue to innovate and add important features to existing hardware. This says a lot about the power underlying the hardware architecture of the Z9 and its future flexibility. It also heralds a new era in camera manufacturing that allows the addition of significantly improved functionality through major firmware updates. For the photographer making important and expensive purchasing decisions the ability to add significant new features adds tremendous value to the initial investment made in purchasing this camera and the Z mount lenses. I have a hunch that Nikon has more exciting firmware updates planned for the future of this amazing camera.
Great summary as always Ricci, I would love to see Nikon put back "Peaking Stack Image" into the latest version of each model Nikon, this was in the Z6 and Z7, it was very useful out in the field when using focus stacking capture to check you had enough images for the image you needed.
Wow! This is amazing. That's for the great overview and demonstration. I photograph professional golf, and I can see setting this up to start a burst when the ball reaches the hole, and capture a scene with the golfer's reaction as it goes in or misses. I can photograph a rider on a horse going over a jump and capture every single rider at exactly the right time. Also glad to have Exposure Delay return. That eliminates the need for a cable release. I've used this a great deal for landscapes in that 1/30 to 2 second range.
Ricci. I was having trouble setting up the Z9 Auto capture and making it work because most of the other videos were difficult to follow and often incomplete. Your video on this subject was excellent and has brought me a long way toward being able to use this capability. I have now subscribed to your RUclips channel. Keep up the excellent work.
Nailed it again, Ricci. Many thanks. Great news about auto capture. I've wanted to video the antics of some of my local birds in my bird bath, but didn't have the means. I do now!! 😁
It did cross my mind as you were describing auto capture that it could have been called 'auto photographer'. Amazing feature. Excellent explanation. Thanks Ricci.
Very informative as always, Ricci. Thank you for making and sharing this video for the Nikon Z9 community. As always, your expertise and honest review are appreciated.
Some really solid changes there. Will be interesting to see how many of these flow down to the Z8. I think all Z cameras should default to Type E camera sounds (ouch). ;-)
Wow! Have always been a Nikon fan and this is only one example of why. All those added features (there have been many. We are at 4.0 now) make the Z9 even better as it probably was already. Would love to see the Auto Capture also in cameras like the D850...

We need Exposure Delay in the Z8 as well. This is an essential feature for us Landscape Photographers. I already miss this in my Z8 and use it all the time in my D850.
Up to now I have used Snapbridge to trigger my Z9 with my phone if the button press is a concern, it's a simple solution that takes seconds to implement.

Amazing news wow on the features...however it does mess up my priority to buy the Z8 some excellent new features on the Z9. Considering the financial commitment in buying these cameras would be nice to know if I get the Z8 I will get those new features eventually or if not maybe the Z9 has become the better camera for me even though I wanted a mini Z9 ie the Z8. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

Thanks for the video. I will be using it to capture birds in the desert behind my home (Arizona, USA). I am wondering if the camera’s response is fast enough to capture lightening, either air to ground or cloud to cloud? Currently I just just set the camera to fire a few hundred times sighted on a particular area. Well maybe not that many shots but when reviewing the take later it seems like that many.
Thank you Ricci for the great, as always, overview. I tried the Auto-Capture with the 8 Z 800mm pf lens and the distance's Near value can be only dialed to 16m at the minimum distance . why can't I choose closer distances ? Is there a way to change it ?
Ricci, I may have asked this before, but I've not heard anyone give a good answer. I'm grateful that Nikon added in Exposure delay - as many have been asking for - but why on Earth have they not added live Zebras for stills. If there was some reason it couldn't be added to show on the screen, okay, but it's there in video mode. What gives? That would be so nice to go manual ISO instead of AUTO ISO especially if Nikon allowed the adjustments to ISO ceiling to match RAW as in the Sony A1. Have you asked about this feature with anyone from Nikon?
Thanks Ricci! 1 question: I am missing the point of the 300 s with pre release... what does it change? I was actually hoping to rather see raw support for the pre release function ... cheers
Previous if you activated pre release capture but didn’t actually fire pre release capture would force you to stop after 30 seconds (you would have to let go of AF ) Now pre release capture will run for up to 300 seconds before you actually press the shutter button. When you do it will then store the previous 1 second. Let’s say ur waiting for a bird to fly off a perch and that bird doesn’t move with the old FW you could only wait for 30 second with the new FW you can wait for 300 seconds
I really don’t know if the camera in auto capture also does aoutofocus or just triggers with a predifined distance? Also I would like to know if it’s important where the focus point is. Thanks for your explanations Ricci. Great content
Thx for the, as always, interesting & useful video. How odd is that to limit auto capture with DX lenses ? I can't imagine what would a technical reason for that.
Thank you Ricci for this video. My problem is that I only get it to work in video mode, not photographique mode. What do I do wrong, tried several different FF lenses. Great regards Robbie Nijman.
Great explanation. I have been using Auto Capture for several days. The camera is set up in the shade with the target area in full sun. I noticed that when I change the battery after 4 hours that the camera is warm to the touch. Is that normal? The Auto temperature cutout is set to Standard.
I tried the setup today with 500mm/5.6 PF but the AF-C does not start automatically so I had to focus manually after I pressed the video button. It happened the same way with my Z 100-400mm S lens unless I set the distance. Your help is appreciated. Thank you for sharing.
Did I miss some settings or bracketing still only allows for 3 and 5 shots? That is such a miss for me... I often shoot 2-shot bracketing on my z7ii ("normal" exposure and one extra -3ev exposure to retain hotspots). With the z9 and z8 i always have to take a useless long exposure, which takes a long time too, since it only has 3 and 5 steps.
Not at all, it will analyze the scene and only trigger when certain events occur and will continue capturing images as long as these events do occur if my understanding is correct
@@bernardlanguillier7970 I think you're confusing auto capture with exposure delay and self-timer. AUTOCAPTURE for long telephoto lenses, how does the autofocus work? because of the shallow depth of field, would it be able to focus and take pictures in time for fast moving across the frame subjects? it have to be prefocused? would it mantain 3d tracking or other modes? if the subject is a lot out of focus because of the DOF of the long telephoto lens, 400, 600 or 800, will it recognizeit and shoot it? The Canon R5 has something called, “face priority ttl” which reads the exposure off the portrait when using ttl flash. It’s great as it separates the exposure from the background and gives better consistency on the model. TTL works fine on the Z9 but when I want add more flashes say a rim light the ttl might get confused, often overexposing the face. I’m having to go all manual most of the time to overcome this and when I’m on an outside shoot doing different locations it becomes a chore. Is there a chance this feature can be added in a future update? I’m very jealous of my R5 buddies right now!
The Exposure Delay I miss the most with the Z8 - will Nikon bring it back there, too? I can use the intervall timer as a work around, but it is not stored in the bank and uses a different start button.
Thanks. Any changes to how the Z9 accepts third party batteries? Curious to know after seeing multiple reports that the Z8 won’t accept third party batteries whereas my Z9 and Z 6II got along well with them.
'And I'm sure I will see you all VERY soon', he said at the end of the video....😎 Oh, something new is coming, I'm 100% sure. Just look at his face at 22:08. But what will it be? The long overdue 200-600? Maybe a DX pro body? A Df 📷perhaps? Keep those eyeballs peeled folks!
Did I miss a part about the camera going to sleep and kicking back on? Leaving it for four hours is fun but do you have to turn off the sleep function?
Auto-capture is not something I was ever expecting, but something I most likely will use a fair bit, so well done Nikon! Do you know if it will work with lightning? It's not really motion, but hopefully that would trigger it as well.
One thing, I would like is AF which is automatically circle through all the faces which are on the frame. (Would be nice for sport photography) 😉 The Memory Banks are still unusable and a PitA.🤬🤬 Something like the U1, U2, .. U9 System would be nice (With naming and the possibilities get it with the Mode selection (A, S, P, U1, U2..) (And only change the value is saved on purpose.) - I heard about an android App maybe this could somehow allow to set the camera professional to the desired setting?
Morton Hilmer is going to love the auto capture feature. I fully expect to see his badgers at all hours of the night and morning.
ha, i was just thinking about how he was scouting that badger den

Thanks. Any changes to how the Z9 accepts third party batteries? Curious to know after seeing multiple reports that the Z8 won’t accept third party batteries whereas my Z9 and Z 6II got along well with them.
D and E sounds are absolutely silly lol. B sounds pretty good though!
my original reaction when I first heard E was interesting 🤣
@@RicciTalks it’s almost painful through my head phones lmfao good content my friend 👌
I thought there was nothing in the Z9 I wanted that my Z8 doesn't have. Here's fingers crossed that auto capture will make it to Z8 pretty soon.
'And I'm sure I will see you all VERY soon', he said at the end of the video....😎
Oh, something new is coming, I'm 100% sure. Just look at his face at 22:08. But what will it be? The long overdue 200-600? Maybe a DX pro body? A Df 📷perhaps?
Keep those eyeballs peeled folks!
Do you think the new mode could be used as a trigger to photograph lightning?
Thanks - very soon sounds good ;-)
Did I miss a part about the camera going to sleep and kicking back on? Leaving it for four hours is fun but do you have to turn off the sleep function?
Awesome as always !!
Auto-capture is not something I was ever expecting, but something I most likely will use a fair bit, so well done Nikon! Do you know if it will work with lightning? It's not really motion, but hopefully that would trigger it as well.
"I'm sure I will see you all very soon" - is that a hint???? God, I wish he is talking about the mythical 200-600 telephoto lens.
One thing, I would like is AF which is automatically circle through all the faces which are on the frame. (Would be nice for sport photography) 😉
The Memory Banks are still unusable and a PitA.🤬🤬 Something like the U1, U2, .. U9 System would be nice (With naming and the possibilities get it with the Mode selection (A, S, P, U1, U2..) (And only change the value is saved on purpose.) - I heard about an android App maybe this could somehow allow to set the camera professional to the desired setting?
Ricci, Thank you.
"I´ll see you all very soon.... " How soon? IS THE 180 600 ARRIVING???? :P
