Morton Hilmer is going to love the auto capture feature. I fully expect to see his badgers at all hours of the night and morning.
ha, i was just thinking about how he was scouting that badger den
I'll be he's been testing it.
I was thinking of that Polar Bear on the island when the Z9 was released. Not really wanting him to risk things or himself but that would be a use of the feature.
Auto capture will be great for private investigators. Now they can take a nap in the car.
Auto capture will be great for sports and action photography
Fantastic, as a wildlife photographer Auto Capture was feature that I was waiting for. Now my Z9 can function as a trap-camera without any limitation on image quality. Now we need pre-capture-release in Raw.. Thanks Nikon.
Curious if Autocapture can fulfil some pre-release functions? Example Focusing on a stationary bird and setting the pre-capture to quickly detect movement as when the bird takes off (setting the speed level); if this works, it is easier, less labour intensive and in Raw!
@@quetharainteresting idea. i looked at this feature as more for use when the camera isn't manned- but this could be worth trying in certain situations. Please reply back if you have luck with this- I'll do the same, BUT i don't have any events planned in near future where i could test this.
I bet your teaser at the end hints to the release of the ~200-600, looking very much forward to that 😊
Excellent! The Z9 just keeps getting better! Thanks for the explanations, Ricci. :)
Great video Ricci as always. Awesome to see Nikon stepping up again, fantastic to see.
👍Exposure delay, hurray. Now bring it to the Z8. Bring pre-release RAW support. That little delay after "very soon", something's coming. Z500 plz or 200-600 or Zf, my wish list is long.
Thank you Ricci for another top shelf production keeping all of us informed in detail of the latest on the Z family. Looking forward to putting these to use and watching your takes on the in depth use of the new improvements. Nikon has done such a great job with the Z family, and you are on top of it all in such a straight forward presentation. Well done Nikon and Well Done Ricci!!!
Hi, thank you for the interesting videos! About Auto capture: Did you notice, that the minimal distance, which can be set is not (!) the minimal distance, which you have for the particular lens for regular use, but seemingly the 20x of the focal length for the so called „prime“ lenses (not zooms)? As I tested, the minimal distance to set with auto capture is with the Z 800mm f6.3 16m(!) instead of regularly 5m. (With TC 2x 32m instead of 5m…) The corresponding values for Z 105mm MC 2,1m (instead of 29cm), for the Z 24-120mm 0,4m at 24mm, but it grows gradually to 2,4m up to the longest focal length for 120mm (which regularly allows to focus 0,4m to. For this lens zooming back to 24mm the minimal distance does‘t change again automatically to 40cm. It seems an allowed closest distance to set for the (not wide angel focal length) possible with auto capture limited by the software to the 20x of the particular (not wide angel) focal lens independently of its regular near focus capacity, which is much closer as that for auto capture (as I wrote the individual values for lenses I tested above). How do you think about? I mean, even if auto capture is generally a very good feature, at that point there is a very relevant limitation for wildlife photographer, with potential to improve this issue. I find it interesting, that up to now no reviews mentioned this issue. Even in the manual („addendum“ to firmware 4.0 there is no word about the limitation of the closest didtance, which differs from that, which the particular lens itself allows. Best regards Josef😮
Wow the low ISO’s on log recording are a very much welcomed feature
Outstanding! Thank you, Ricci. Loving this update so far.
Fantastic new features! Nikon have shown the tremendous capabilities of the Z9 as a platform for software and firmware development. In the past, adding features of this magnitude would usually require purchasing a new body. However, Nikon has demonstrated its ability to continue to innovate and add important features to existing hardware. This says a lot about the power underlying the hardware architecture of the Z9 and its future flexibility. It also heralds a new era in camera manufacturing that allows the addition of significantly improved functionality through major firmware updates. For the photographer making important and expensive purchasing decisions the ability to add significant new features adds tremendous value to the initial investment made in purchasing this camera and the Z mount lenses. I have a hunch that Nikon has more exciting firmware updates planned for the future of this amazing camera.
This is incredible. Wow
As always - excellent video, with features and functions masterfully explained. Looking forward to giving Auto Capture a try.
Thanks Ricci, I'm excited!
I can’t wait to see you very soon Ricci 🤩
Wow - that’s a lot! Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks Ricci, great to have exposure delay back! Great informative video as usual. Wished they put Aeroplane mode in this update.
Thanks for the run throughs Ricci!
Nailed it again, Ricci. Many thanks.
Great news about auto capture. I've wanted to video the antics of some of my local birds in my bird bath, but didn't have the means. I do now!! 😁
Thanks Ricci I’m looking forward to trying these new features out and huge thanks to Nikon for updating our equipment free of charge 😀👍👍
Incredibly sophisticated auto capture implementation options -- well done Nikon!
Wow! This a a great surprise!
That’s incredible, so much more flexible than an ultrasonic sensor 👌🏻
Thanks Ricci, concise and informative, as ever... It would be lovely to get a few tweeks for the Z6_2 via firmware, especially a little tightening up of some of the autofocus modes.
Great run through on a serious impressive update. Cheers bud!
Thanks for this very informative video.
Very well done Nikon and well done Ricci, clear, easy to understand accurate information as is your hallmark, Cheers Ricci much appreciated! 👏👍😀 Ps no “exposure delay mode” was a weird omission, thankfully it’s been added, I reckon lots of users will be delighted by that single improvement! 😀
Best V4.0 video out there by far! Thanks Ricci!
Hello Ricci, Thanks for the great info.
Great INFO Z9 shooters !
Great stuff
Very informative as always, Ricci. Thank you for making and sharing this video for the Nikon Z9 community. As always, your expertise and honest review are appreciated.
I'm so happy Nikon continues to update. Hopefully some day we'll get raw precapture. Thank you for the rundown.
It did cross my mind as you were describing auto capture that it could have been called 'auto photographer'. Amazing feature.
Excellent explanation. Thanks Ricci.
Thank you for a great video. I know this is coming to my new Z8!!!! Hummingbirds watch out!
always lovely to get a substantial FU like this
Im sure….you will see us all very soon Ricci - thanks for the video’s your putting out, very informative.
excellent. thank you for this.
Awesome as always !!
Ricci. I was having trouble setting up the Z9 Auto capture and making it work because most of the other videos were difficult to follow and often incomplete. Your video on this subject was excellent and has brought me a long way toward being able to use this capability. I have now subscribed to your RUclips channel. Keep up the excellent work.
Very helpful information! Thanks
Great stuff. Always look for your vid first. :)
Very lucidly explained, thank you so much. None other than you have explained update in a clear thought.
Exposure Delay, Shutter Sounds, Eye Switching - MUST have in the Z8! 🙂👏🏻
Thanks Ricci!
Ahahahah the teasing Ricci ;)
Thank you for those explanations,
Well, I'm sure I see you veeeeerry soon ;)
Brilliant Professional Feature! I love that Z9 keep updating their new firmware for us! Can't wait to try my new sharp trap camera!
Thanks mate! Great video as always ;)
Wow! This is amazing. That's for the great overview and demonstration. I photograph professional golf, and I can see setting this up to start a burst when the ball reaches the hole, and capture a scene with the golfer's reaction as it goes in or misses. I can photograph a rider on a horse going over a jump and capture every single rider at exactly the right time.
Also glad to have Exposure Delay return. That eliminates the need for a cable release. I've used this a great deal for landscapes in that 1/30 to 2 second range.
Wow!
Have always been a Nikon fan and this is only one example of why.
All those added features (there have been many. We are at 4.0 now) make the Z9 even better as it probably was already.
Would love to see the Auto Capture also in cameras like the D850...
you a are so qucik by this update information. Bravo
Very helpful, Ricci. Thanks!
Great summary as always Ricci, I would love to see Nikon put back "Peaking Stack Image" into the latest version of each model Nikon, this was in the Z6 and Z7, it was very useful out in the field when using focus stacking capture to check you had enough images for the image you needed.
where in z6 can i find it ?
@@PaulShutts. thanks will check it out
Thanks Ricci excellent review, 18 months ago I was so close jumping ship to Sony, so pleased I stayed with the Nikon family, SEE YOU VERY VERY SOON 😁
Hahaha! Just before seeing this video I had just watched a video on auto capture by Digitutor but there was no mention of a new firmware update, so I was chastising myself for not having seen this in my menu and that I should fully now read the manual!😂😂😂 Ricci you are King!👏🏾👍🏾🙏🏾
Auto capture seems incredibly powerful!
Ricci, Thank you.
Amazing news wow on the features...however it does mess up my priority to buy the Z8 some excellent new features on the Z9. Considering the financial commitment in buying these cameras would be nice to know if I get the Z8 I will get those new features eventually or if not maybe the Z9 has become the better camera for me even though I wanted a mini Z9 ie the Z8. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
Thank you very much!
Thanks - very soon sounds good ;-)
Hi Ricci, Thank you very much for the detailed explanations. It's cool what Nikon delivers. 👍🙂🙂
Is there still the display/viewer black-out for longer exposure times (between 1/8 ..1s) ??? 🥴
Nice to sea that they re-integrated exposure delay 🙂
So the HEIF from Z8 is coming later?
Some really solid changes there. Will be interesting to see how many of these flow down to the Z8. I think all Z cameras should default to Type E camera sounds (ouch). ;-)
Thx for the, as always, interesting & useful video. How odd is that to limit auto capture with DX lenses ? I can't imagine what would a technical reason for that.
Good news on the shutter delay. I hope this gets into the next Z8 update
Setting shutter' sound as type E may be result explosive!
Thanks for the video. I will be using it to capture birds in the desert behind my home (Arizona, USA). I am wondering if the camera’s response is fast enough to capture lightening, either air to ground or cloud to cloud? Currently I just just set the camera to fire a few hundred times sighted on a particular area. Well maybe not that many shots but when reviewing the take later it seems like that many.
Loved that pregnant pause at the end. ;)
Yes for adding exposure delay mode again. Use it all the time
For me the come back of the DLY i s the Best improvement. Hopefully the also add it to the Z8.
About the shutter sounds: I'm missing the FM2 sound (specially for long exposures 🙂)
Thank you Ricci for the great, as always, overview. I tried the Auto-Capture with the 8 Z 800mm pf lens and the distance's Near value can be only dialed to 16m at the minimum distance . why can't I choose closer distances ? Is there a way to change it ?
Hopefully they bring these updates to the Z8
We need Exposure Delay in the Z8 as well. This is an essential feature for us Landscape Photographers. I already miss this in my Z8 and use it all the time in my D850.
Up to now I have used Snapbridge to trigger my Z9 with my phone if the button press is a concern, it's a simple solution that takes seconds to implement.
Very pleased with what they have given us, however I am still holding out for pre capture in raw even if at 10FPS and HE compressed. Could they not give us pre capture in HEIC?
Hi Ricci, excellent - thanks. Great firmware upgrade... but, does 300 secs pre-capture work with back-button focus or just half-press on the shutter ?
I would love to have this feature on my Z6.
'And I'm sure I will see you all VERY soon', he said at the end of the video....😎
Oh, something new is coming, I'm 100% sure. Just look at his face at 22:08. But what will it be? The long overdue 200-600? Maybe a DX pro body? A Df 📷perhaps?
Keep those eyeballs peeled folks!
Thanks, great information...one thing, I did not see if you mentioned what the size number equates to...is 1 small and 5 big? thanks
Thank you for your review of Firm 4 - can you change the distance meter to go from meters to feet and inches?
I really don’t know if the camera in auto capture also does aoutofocus or just triggers with a predifined distance? Also I would like to know if it’s important where the focus point is. Thanks for your explanations Ricci. Great content
I thought there was nothing in the Z9 I wanted that my Z8 doesn't have. Here's fingers crossed that auto capture will make it to Z8 pretty soon.
"I will see you, very soon" wink. Sounds like a "I've been using X for a month..."
Mmmmm...
Auto-capture is not something I was ever expecting, but something I most likely will use a fair bit, so well done Nikon! Do you know if it will work with lightning? It's not really motion, but hopefully that would trigger it as well.
"I'm sure I will see you all very soon" - is that a hint???? God, I wish he is talking about the mythical 200-600 telephoto lens.
Great explanation. I have been using Auto Capture for several days. The camera is set up in the shade with the target area in full sun. I noticed that when I change the battery after 4 hours that the camera is warm to the touch. Is that normal? The Auto temperature cutout is set to Standard.
You don't talk much are 'ntyou 😉. Thank you for the information 🙏
I tried the setup today with 500mm/5.6 PF but the AF-C does not start automatically so I had to focus manually after I pressed the video button. It happened the same way with my Z 100-400mm S lens unless I set the distance. Your help is appreciated. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Ricci for this video. My problem is that I only get it to work in video mode, not photographique mode. What do I do wrong, tried several different FF lenses. Great regards Robbie Nijman.
Ricci, I may have asked this before, but I've not heard anyone give a good answer. I'm grateful that Nikon added in Exposure delay - as many have been asking for - but why on Earth have they not added live Zebras for stills. If there was some reason it couldn't be added to show on the screen, okay, but it's there in video mode. What gives? That would be so nice to go manual ISO instead of AUTO ISO especially if Nikon allowed the adjustments to ISO ceiling to match RAW as in the Sony A1. Have you asked about this feature with anyone from Nikon?
Is that possible to set that function to one of the custom buttons?
Did I miss some settings or bracketing still only allows for 3 and 5 shots?
That is such a miss for me... I often shoot 2-shot bracketing on my z7ii ("normal" exposure and one extra -3ev exposure to retain hotspots).
With the z9 and z8 i always have to take a useless long exposure, which takes a long time too, since it only has 3 and 5 steps.
I was a little puzzled about the section on exposure delay- mainly the comment that it wasn't present or went away.
Is this different from choosing the delay option that's available in the FPS menu? That option has been on my Z9 since purchase in october 22. If these are two different functions, can someone explain the differences to me? Please and thank you!
Does low iso 200 video work in auto iso video as well? Or is the lowest in auto iso still 800? Thanks.
Do you think the new mode could be used as a trigger to photograph lightning?
I hoped you would have discussed exposure delay mode...
Hi Ricci, informative video as always. I have a query regarding firmware 4.0 in that I noticed on my 400mm f4.5 lens that had the function ring set to exposure compensation in the custom settings menu however although set this way the function ring is changing aperture. It appears to be also controlling aperture on my 800PF and 105mm macro. Both originally set to exp. compensation. On my Z6ii all works as originally set, ie exp. comp. Is it possible this is an issue with firmware 4.0 or an issue with a setting on my Z9. I’m stumped. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
I am no longer stumped. It would appear to on my Z9 under Custom Controls "F2" I inadvertently set the "lens Fn ring" to Exp. Comp and not the "lens Control Ring" which was already set to Aperture. Operator error I'm afraid. Hope nobody reading my query above was confused.
Thanks for this review 🫡
Is there any place on the internet where I can submit requests regarding firmware functionality? I'm specifically interested in adding a 3x4 aspect ratio. It was available on the D850, and I used it every time I did photo shoots for print magazines or intentionally framed for platforms like Instagram. Currently, the options are 1x1 and 16x9. Adding 3x4 shouldn't be a huge problem, I believe :) I know that you can set guidelines for a 3x4 aspect ratio, but full-frame framing was definitely more convenient.
@Nemat Eynullayev Yes. You are correct 👍🏻
Thanks. Any changes to how the Z9 accepts third party batteries? Curious to know after seeing multiple reports that the Z8 won’t accept third party batteries whereas my Z9 and Z 6II got along well with them.
The Canon R5 has something called, “face priority ttl” which reads the exposure off the portrait when using ttl flash. It’s great as it separates the exposure from the background and gives better consistency on the model. TTL works fine on the Z9 but when I want add more flashes say a rim light the ttl might get confused, often overexposing the face. I’m having to go all manual most of the time to overcome this and when I’m on an outside shoot doing different locations it becomes a chore. Is there a chance this feature can be added in a future update? I’m very jealous of my R5 buddies right now!
I assume that s my screen goes blank when pressing the start button in auto capture with a f 2.8 24-70 lens on it means that it doesn't work with that lens?
