  • Yesterday, Nikon released the fourth major firmware update for the Nikon Z9 - version 4.0. One of the most interesting features is 'Auto Capture,' allowing the photographer to turn the Z9 into a powerful motion capture device. In this video, I explore how this can be used for automating backyard birding!

    Hi, thank you for the interesting videos! About Auto capture: Did you notice, that the minimal distance, which can be set is not (!) the minimal distance, which you have for the particular lens for regular use, but seemingly the 20x of the focal length for the so called „prime“ lenses (not zooms)? As I tested, the minimal distance to set with auto capture is with the Z 800mm f6.3 16m(!) instead of regularly 5m. (With TC 2x 32m instead of 5m…) The corresponding values for Z 105mm MC 2,1m (instead of 29cm), for the Z 24-120mm 0,4m at 24mm, but it grows gradually to 2,4m up to the longest focal length for 120mm (which regularly allows to focus 0,4m to. For this lens zooming back to 24mm the minimal distance does‘t change again automatically to 40cm. It seems an allowed closest distance to set for the (not wide angel focal length) possible with auto capture limited by the software to the 20x of the particular (not wide angel) focal lens independently of its regular near focus capacity, which is much closer as that for auto capture (as I wrote the individual values for lenses I tested above). How do you think about? I mean, even if auto capture is generally a very good feature, at that point there is a very relevant limitation for wildlife photographer, with potential to improve this issue. I find it interesting, that up to now no reviews as Ricci and others) mentioned this issue. Even in the manual („addendum“ to firmware 4.0 there is no word about the limitation of the closest didtance, which differs from that, which the particular lens itself allows. Best regards Josef

      Thank you for this very detailed reply! I can't exactly answer your question because I didn't test the distance settings thoroughly, but I did notice that for my 105mm macro that I was limited to around 2.1 meters for the minimum distance, if that helps!

      @@alanyoungphoto Thank you, it helps aß far, aß you report the same experience with the Z 105mm, weich I made and it seems to support the impression, that the Otter data I collected with other lenses are in fact correct.

    Excellent tutorial video. Wish you explained a little bit more about the pausing time. Thank you so much for sharing.😍

    • @alanyoungphoto
      @alanyoungphoto  Год назад +1

      Thank you! If helpful, this is from the Supplementary Firmware Update Manual:
      The pause option is "the minimum length of time the camera will wait before beginning shooting again" and it "can be selected using [Wait after shooting], which offers a choice of values of from 0 seconds to 30 minutes."
      I think, to me, this limitation may especially be helpful if you do not want to fill up your memory card too quickly. I suppose if I wanted to see what animals were dropping by, I'd set it to take a few shots, and then pause for a certain amount of time to preserve battery and card space.

    • @alanyoungphoto

      They will work with Auto Capture, but you won’t be able to use the Distance Parameter. Motion and Subject detection will still work just fine, and all of the footage in my video was captured without using the distance parameter (my lens was too close).

    It's so difficult for a Japanese camera maker to do the tiny trick and even release it as a major update. All these kinds of things are simply a third party app if the camera is running on a true OS.

    Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem? Got the camera back. They had to replace the Main PCB. Less than 1,000 clicks and worked perfectly until I tried to update.
