    Last year I switched from Canon full frame to the OM-1, mainly for my macro. It has blown me away with the 90mm Pro macro lens and I also picked up the 100-400mm thinking I'd try my hand at birds and wildlife. To be honest I am surprised by how little I miss the benefits of full frame. The dynamic range and high ISO performance is a lot better than I was expecting and the reduced weight compared to my old setup is a huge bonus.

    Correction to my Correction: the full frame equivalent focal length of the 150-400 with the teleconverter is in fact 1000mm. I say as much in the video and my text correction is….incorrect

      But it is 2000m equivalence if shooting the body in jpeg internal 2x teleconverter mode 😊

    Worth noting that Olympus were the first with pro capture. It was on their EM1X back in 2019. All of these other brands Nikon and Canon talk as if it's a new thing on their cameras that they invented. 😂 I was a life long Nikon pro cameras user until Andy Rouse changed to Olympus. I was intrigued, tried them and have been using them for 2 years. Great video, subscribed. 👍

    Why are you using the neck strap on the camera body? there are lens lugs for that strap which don't stress the lens mount...... for Pro Cap, you can lower the load on the processor by shooting at 25 fps and shoot with 15 pre frames and a total burst of 25 so you don't fill the card too fast

  • @williamchan8866
    @williamchan8866 2 дня назад

    Your videos are more personal that’s the difference and you provide first hand experience without following trends of latest gears…..ironically the better the presentation the slicker a channel gets it becomes less personal.

      I really appreciate your words here. I remember you saying as much in the comments for a previous video, too. I promise this channel won’t become centered around latest and greatest gear talk. That said, I will occasionally try out different setups and have fun with it sometimes.

  • @Chris_Wolfgram
    @Chris_Wolfgram 2 дня назад

    150-400… 400 x 1.25 = 500 x 2 = 1000mm. You said it right in the video. Your pop up correction was wrong. Anyway, I’m actually very interested in the OM system. But I shoot with a 1280mm equivalent now. And for small birds, it’s really what I need. Still though, I’ve seen a lot of really nice stuff from OM1 setups 🙂👍 Wish Oly would send me this kit 🙂 I rent everything first, but even that’s not cheap.

      @gerhardbotha7336 День назад

      The 20 mpx on this sensor size matches the pixel density of the R7 and the Fuji X-H2 (which is somewhat higher). So you get the same "image size" on 400mm from any of those if you crop a bit. Or 500mm. I think the OM is a nice system but I like the flexibility of the Canon system. My 100-400mm F5.6L is ii is smaller and when I want to I can through a full frame body on there. And the AF is way better. I do like the built in 1.25 TC on the OM lens. That can be usefull. But I survive with my separate 1.4x and 2x

    Hi Alan! You are fast becoming one of my top RUclipsrs! Congratulations on the 4k! I will be following your review on the OM-1. I mentioned on one of your other posts that I have the Zf and the Tamron 150-500 and I've started making that work. Ergonomically, the combo is still quite heavy for my small hands/wrists, especially after all the procedures I had a couple of years ago. So, I'm leery about picking up a Z6iii or Z8. The OM-1 has been on my list but I've been hesitating on anything but full frame. I think I might have to give it a go now... at least a rental. You did use "big white" in the video. How did the 300mm work for you?

    • @alanyoungphoto
      @alanyoungphoto 3 дня назад

      Hello! I really appreciate the kind words! Thank you! I found the 300 to be very sharp and light considering the effective 600 mm full frame equivalent focal length. It’s like having a 600 f/4 in terms of reach and light. Depth of field-wise, its equivalent to f/8, but I was mostly shooting subjects with distant backgrounds, and I felt like my images still had nice backgrounds. Admittedly, though, I found myself more drawn to the zoom and I wish I would have played with the 300mm more. By the way, I’d also suggest looking at some of the PF lenses to see if they might suit your needs.

    Enjoying your videos Alan. One question I have for you that I haven't seem to hear you mention, but so many other channels do complain about this with the ZF... How do you feel with the long lenses and the lack of grip on the ZF? I lean so much towards that camera body, but have not gone through with getting it because of all the noise and negative chatter on channels complaining about the grip and handholding specifically. You as a wildlife and bird photographer, are putting way longer and heavier lenses than I probably would, so your thoughts on that would be nice to hear. For myself I prefer landscape and some street/cityscape photography. I'd probably go wide lens and I really liking the z24-70mm 2.8 lens. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    • @alanyoungphoto
      @alanyoungphoto 22 часа назад

      I think the body is just fine for me. I do have a smallrig grip on it, but it isn’t that big. I might feel differently if I used it as my primary all day with a telephoto but as of now I think its fine enough for me.

    Wow, I've gone through 5 iterations of wildlife photographers' tips on other cameras, but these settings for the Zf are PERFECT!! I cannot thank you enough! I just picked up the Tamron 150-500mm Z lens. I photograph birds and wildlife only 25% of the time so I wasn't ready to put down a lot of cash for a Z lens, the cheapest options being 180-600mm which is too heavy and the 400mm f/4.5 which would be fabulous but twice the price. I look forward to using these settings with my Zf and the new lens. Thank you so much!

    Great video, very informative! You mentioned you focus the subject at center point and then recompose. I am curious, with AF-C and dynamic focus area, the focus area is fixed (e.g. center point), how do you maintain focus on the subject when you move the camera? In my understanding, with this combination, something in the focus area will be constantly focused. If you move the subject out of the focus area, the subject won't be focused anymore. Did I miss something?

    I do not agree with this review. You have basically made a comparison with Z9. Yes agreed the AF is little sluggish but when a bird is a habitat where there are branches and trees , you need to use single point AF. 99% of cameras will fail against Z9. For those who are with a budget , this is a good offering. I have got brilliant images with the same setup you had in this video.

    • @alanyoungphoto
      @alanyoungphoto 13 дней назад

      I would counter that I think we are actually in agreement. I do think that the Z9 autofocus is better, which you agree with, but the point of my comparison was not to say that the Zf fails, but to be honest about my bias. I agree that this camera is a great offering for most and I think I say as much in the video. I actually still have the zf as my back up body and I quite enjoy it.

    The image circle is move evenly illuminated, with more light rays hitting the sensor at close to a right angle. The image circle may be wider, but that is not the main feature, and most likely the image circle is restricted by some mechanical vignetting (outside the full frame area, of course).

    I came across your interesting video "Nikon 500PF for Bird Photography - Still Good in 2024?". I have a 500mm f/5.6 VR PF and have been considering to sell that and get the Nikon 600mm f/6.3 S PF - to avoid the FTZ II and get the most portable 600mm that I will actually use in real life on my Z8. I had a 600 f/4E FL VR for around 6-7 years but I did not use that as much compared to the 500mm PF or the 80-400 (that I had at the time). Your video convinced me to keep the 500mm PF and think of the Nikon 800mm f/6.3 S PF to complement the 500mm PF. So in some ways going back to a big and relatively heavier lens than the 600 PF. I ordered both 600 PF and the 800 PF with the idea of returning one of them to really decide which one I will actually go for. I received the 800 PF yesterday and I will get the 600 PF tomorrow. Both are used lenses - to keep the upgrade costs low. The 600 is $3800 and the 800 is $4900. If I go with the 600 PF, I can sell the 500 PF + the TC14E III + FTZ II. The 800 PF feels much lighter than my old 600 f/4E. Still may end up being a rarely used lens because of the size and not being easy to travel with. On the other hand, it could give me stunning images similar to my previous 600mm f/4 that would not be possible with the 500 PF / 600 PF. And I will likely use it more frequently compared to the 600 f/4 - at least locally. So now an interesting decision looms between the 600 PF and the 800 PF. If I do choose the 800, I do not plan to carry the 500mm and 800mm together. For travel, it would be 14-30 f/4 + 70-180 f/2.8 + 500 PF while the 800 PF would be used locally. Choosing the 600 PF will make the decision of which lens to take out for an excursion a lot easier as it would always be the lighter weight lens. If you have any thoughts / suggestions beyond what I said, I will definitely be interested in knowing those.

    Great review. Thx. Q: if you were to choose one, would you go with 105 1.4 or 135 1.8? Thx.

      Thank you! This is honestly a very tough choice. I think the Plena gets my vote but it would make me sad to give up the 105.
