    Here's another 'gotchya': I was really excited to learn about this, but came upon a situation that makes it somewhat useless for me. Here's why: While shooting sports, specifically baseball, I'll shoot action in 20, 30 or sometimes 120fps. Periodically, I'll spin around to shoot single shots of players on the bench or surrounding fans like you describe hockey fans. Programming a L-FN button for recall shooting mode hold appears to be the perfect answer. I setup the mode to switch release mode to single (along with other settings). But (why is there always a 'but'?), the recall shooting hold will switch the release mode from 20fps to single, BUT if you're shooting 30 or 120fps, the release mode will not change. Everything else changes, but the release mode does not. Ugh.

      Thank you for letting me know about this. I will test it and update the video comments to reflect this. Good catch!

      Also an annoyance, if in recall mode, and chimping to check, it goes back to before. That sticky feature in recall is also a great nuissance. Trying to +/- exposure also takes you out of hold. Now you say don't know why the engineers ... that is the whole problem. Where are the photographers. The Z9 should have been a FF Olympus M1X with better newer tech, but proper U1-U4 for the recall banks.

      Same limitation with the User Settings on all Z cameras like my Z6ii

      @@jean-baptistegrenouille4726 Yes, it's still a mystery to me how Nikon which "group" of photographers they are surveying from... I haven't seen anyone praised the Shooting Bank anywhere on forums, and everyone is saying how the U1-U3 are more useful as the settings can be saved, and can be "recalled" with a switch. I had so much ease using all the other lower end cameras until I ended up with the D850, and now the Z8, again without that super useful feature..... the "banks" can't be replicated, and there's so much settings to "tweak", and it's so dangerous as we need to press a button to activate, before we can scroll, and when we are in a rush to switch around, it's almost a definite that we will accidentally change the settings if we released the button earlier, or overdialed by 1 click (ended up changing shutter speed or aperture by 0.3 stops)

    Thank you very much for this explanation. In the past I used U1 to U3 on the Z6ii and other cameras. With the Z9 I set up the shooing menu banks for this and put it on Fn2.

    Great video Joe. I'd heard the Z9 could save a second exposure but didn't expect it to be as comprehensive as it is and you explained it in a great way. I will go and have a look and will definitely use it for my sports photography. Liked and subscribed. Thanks!

    Yes - I go to “Load User Settings” to get back to my desired setup. I find that easier than manually changing things back. I’ve also noticed that when I press the function button a second time, the aperture doesn’t always return to my previous setting. Again, a quick loading of user settings gets me back to square one, but I agree that this Nikon Mystery is annoying…

    Aloha Joseph from the Rugby World Cup 7’s in Capetown, South Africa. Could you please compare the RSF to Shooting Banks. Due to extreme half field shadowing during these all day events, we have to shift to Auto ISO. Also you did not show RSF in video mode. Thanks for explaining here or creating a new vid. Thank you, very nice explanation. I just noticed that you cannot set min shutter speed in "ISO sensitivity settings" which is a great necessity to me. Because I'm switching from action shooting to still shooting, where my min shutter speed is set to 1/500 in action mode but in still mode 1/60 would be enough. So it remains at 1/500 when I switched and increasing the ISO for still shooting unnecessarily. I wish Nikon adds that min shutter speed adjustment option as well.

    Thank you for the info and the clear and direct explanation. However, I am still having trouble getting what I want. I am a new Z8 owner with no Z9 prior experience. Between Custom Shooting Banks, Custom Controls Banks and Recall shooting functions, I would think I could create a simple one button or one menu option to switch between what I would call Action settings and Portrait settings. I would like to include the skin smoothing function in the Portrait "bank", but it won't work with the high fps mode. I can't seem to find a way to "bank" the skin smoothing functions with the release mode to change the both with the same action. I can't seem to get consistant action between bank changes. Am I missing something, is there a clear explanation of this somewhere?

    Great video! Thank you. I was successful in setting my custom function button then I thought great! I can do that for different auto focus modes for Fn2 another for Fn3 and Fn4. SpSweet dreams it does not work. 😏 when you make your settings for Fn2, Fn1 follows, if you set Fn3 in a different way Fn1 and Fn2 follows. Frustrating… any tip? Am I making a mistake here? Thanks in advance.

    Very helpful video but I have one question. At the 5.38 mark you set auto ISO to 1000. Why would you set it to anything above 64? By setting it at 1000, if the scene is very bright ISO will not go below 1000.

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  2 года назад +1

      No rhyme or reason - just for demo purposes. But using the given example in the video if I was in a hockey rink I would want a higher ISO to compensate for the darker areas where the fans are.

    • @jean-baptistegrenouille4726
      @jean-baptistegrenouille4726 2 года назад

      @@ShutterSpeak Methinks that to take full advantage of Auto-ISO, you should try: ISO sensitivity 64, Maximum sensitivity 12800. This should encompass the whole range. Fine tune +/- exposure can be done with the lens ring, WITH a silicone wrist band to slow and avoid accidental moving. This too is a kludge as that ring should have click stops.

    Help! So I find the Menu banks are useless as they save the last settings when you used that bank rather than a permanent fixed set of settings. So is this more like the Z6ii User Settings on the mode dial? Thanks

    Thanks for the great info. I find the RSF function really useful to change from Wide area L to single point when shooting wildlife. However I think I found another gotcha that I would be interested in seeing if you can replicate. I am trying to set up independent RSF features for each of my my two shooting banks. In bank A, shooting manual I want the RSF to be 1/3200, F4 single point. In bank B I want the RSF to be 1/320, F7.1 Wide area large. What I am finding is I can have independent RSF focus points in each bank but the RSF speed and aperture end up being the same in each bank. Ie I cannot have unique RSF Speed and aperture in each bank. I know it is getting a bit complicated but in my mind the idea of having banks is so that you could have uniques settings in each bank, My expectation is that the RSF function would have been treated similarly

    The problem with recall shooting function in my area of application: bird photography is that while it does work, but once the camera goes to sleep, it goes back to the original mode again so if i am shooting a perched bird and i can recall a bird in flight shooting quickly using that but once you wait too long and the camera goes to sleep, it goes back to the original shooting mode. Is there something you can do about it ?

      Oboy, glad I stumbled on this vid, well done! I've had the same problem of the "recall" settings reverting to original. Very irritating! Now that I see the reason it doesn't lessen the angst, but now I check more often! If Nikon can fix this on the next firmware update that would be appreciated!

    Storm in a teacup! Really small things just to make it BIG deal!... You make some mistakes and one of them I remember (the last one) you didn't understand WHY the camera changed to f/7.1 when YOU changes the metering to PIN and the focus (AE) point gone to the black body of the parafernalia you had!...
