As someone who has recently adopted Nikon Z and enjoys macro I was delighted to discover this video. In the end I mapped the lens function button to DOF. Many thanks!
Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I bought a Zf and this has confused me a lot. Mirrorless cameras are so complicated! I have subscribed and liked. Thank you and all the best.
Big Like and thank you. Just got a Z 6ii for an early Xmas present and it is my first Mirrorless experience. Still feeling my way around and spend half my time trying to find things in the menus or trying to understand things I have never seen. This is very informative. I appreciate your factual presentation and useful training subjects. Happy to have subscribed. P.S., you may not realize it, but when you say "nice to see your smiling face again", I am one of the ones who smiles back at you. 8-)
Hello Joe, thanks for the information on the depth of field button. I set up my button the way you showed on your video. Wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas and many blessings for the coming new year. Be safe
Thanks Joe, Barry Doig from New Zealand. I've just bought the Nikon 6ii and I really appreciate your videos, especially this one. A question; does using the Movie Record also actuate the movie camera?
Hey man, great stuff and very helpful, I'm a Z50 owner and was hoping you might be able to help. I have my preview set to the record button just like you do, great, no problems except that it also engages AE-L AF-L lock when pressed. I do have back button focus setup but don't know if this is by design. It's actually good to be able to combine those, like a 2 for 1 button. Thanks in advance!
First time I've seen your channel (just subscirbed) I am sure that many of us would not have known that. Thanks I wonder why Nikon shuts it off at 5.6?
I don't think it is a firmware issue. It has to do with the amount of light being picked up by the sensor. AS I understand it there isn't enough light above 5.6.
Thanks, great tip Joseph! Unfortunatly I’ve designed the movie-button to 100% zoom. FN1 is designated to fokus box (on/off) FN2 is for changing focus mode (with back wheel) Any advise?
Hey Joe! Happy holidays big brother! I still think you are watching me on my web cam. I’m 87 years old and been shooting Nikon for over 50 years. I got lenses older then you! All this technology is a bit confusing, my great godson helps me with my computer and without his help I wouldn’t know how to turn on this complicated computer. I’m used to the days where film was like ammunition and you conserved your film for something important. Now with there gosh darn digital cameras people just take pictures of everything and anything as they don’t value there shots. I think a good exercise for everyone would be to go out and limit yourself to 24 or 34 pictures that way each shot becomes more important than you think about what you want to shoot rather than just shooting everything. But what do I know,!
I own a Nikon D7200 DSLR and a Nikon Z5 and no matter what lens i use for portraits ,my nikon D7200 has an amazing depht of field! I don`t understand why photos always has a 3D finish looking with the D7200 and the newest Z 5 don`t ...Can someone tell me why?

Glad to have helped - enjoy the new camera!
My first time to listen to your show. I am so impressed with the quality and clarity of the information. Thank you !

Thank you for watching!
Thanks. I graduated up from the Z50 to the Z6ii. This was really helpful.
Congratulations on the upgrade - the Z 6 II is a wonderful camera. Thanks for saying hello!!
Why is this not told to us in the beginning? This is nuts. Thank you so much.
Very helpful. I had heard about this as a problem and now have a good workaround.
I also had no clue how depth of preview worked . This totally blew my mind . Never understood it til now !

Thank you for the comment and subscribing. Enjoy your new camera. You made a great choice!
I've owned my Nikon Z7 for 5 years now and only just found out about this feature 😅
you explained this well. I never knew what that feature was or how it worked. Thanks!!
Hello Joe, thanks for the information on the depth of field button. I set up my button the way you showed on your video.
Wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas and many blessings for the coming new year.

Thank you ! Merry Christmas to you and your family as well :-)
Joe, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. This will be very helpful...
Happy I could help. Thanks for saying hi :-)
Thanks Joseph been trying to figure that out for ages
Way to go Joe. Very clear and concise presentation. .
Thank you for watching :-)
I'm fascinated by the Tricorder on the shelf behind Joseph.
Well in that case I'll try to work it into a future video... just for you :-)
Thanks Joe, Barry Doig from New Zealand. I've just bought the Nikon 6ii and I really appreciate your videos, especially this one. A question; does using the Movie Record also
actuate the movie camera?
Brilliant, many thanks.
Very good, thank you !
Hello Joseph from İstanbul, thank you very much for this information. Be safe please..

Sorry but I don't have a Z50 so I can't be sure.
Great advice as always Joe, thank you.
You're welcome :-)
Very helpful 🙌🏼

Great tip....thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Great hints again.
Thank you and thanks for watching and always saying hi!
@@ShutterSpeak your welcome and a merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 to you and your family, relatives and friends and a healthy, happy and prosperous 2022
@@NikCan66 Thank you - Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and your family as well :-)
@@ShutterSpeak Thanks 😊
Really informative! Thank you
You're welcome!
I assume for landscape photography you could use depth of field view to check whether foreground, mid ground and background are in focus?
Yes- this would apply to landscapes, macro, and even portraits if you are looking for a sharp background.
Is it me or is NIKON the king of photography right now?
great, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Good to know the workaround… Hope Nikon takes this limitation off through firmwire if possible.
I don't think it is a firmware issue. It has to do with the amount of light being picked up by the sensor. AS I understand it there isn't enough light above 5.6.
@@ShutterSpeak how it is then happening with assigning a buttton for dof preview ?
Thanks, great tip Joseph!

It's a tough call. depends on what you need the most! There are always the lens buttons on the S line.
@@ShutterSpeak Yes, we seem to always run out of useful function buttons 😏

I remember those days of 24 or 36 shots very well. But you've got to keep up or get run over, right? Thanks for saying hi!
How would this work with manual (AI, AI-S etc) lenses? Would it preview correctly as one stops down the lens?
It should work exactly the same provided the camera knows what the f/stop is the lens is at.

The new Z8 doesn’t have this option?
It certainly should have this option although I do not have one to test it out... any Z8 owners out there care to comment?
I noticed that your video doesn’t usually show what mode you are in, M,A,S, does that make any difference.
It would make no difference. Not at all. But great question!
Thanks.Pity you drew it out for so long though.
Almost 4 minutes of your life you will never get back. But you learned something you won't forget.
@@ShutterSpeak Well tbh I knew it was 5.6 before you eventually mentioned it,and knew how to assign the preview to a button.
And it was over 8 minutes.
