    NOW I understand the issue. Thanks for explaining it... and yes it does seem kinda weird that the DoF preview stops at f/5.6 in stills mode.
    I do hope Nikon addresses it for us still life and landscape shooters.

    I love Nikon and my Z7ii, but that kind of upsets me! It makes no sense to lock the aperture in manual mode to a maximum of F5.6. I hope Nikon listens to its customers and finally improves it! Thank you for bringing this up over and over again!

    Thanks for this video Hudson. I love my Z7 but I’ll admit this needless limitation annoys me especially when the whole mirrorless experience is supposed to be about seeing the view you’re pointing at. I now tend to AF a scene then use focus peaking to comfort myself of sharpness. I miss zooming in a checking and the little dot bottom left of EVF seems impossible to keep static on some occasions. I would like Nikon to remove the limitation in manual mode, and will message them.

      Reply... "It has been noted that when previewing the depth of field on the the Z series cameras the aperture only closes down to f/5.6. This is different to a DSLR that can preview the image to the smallest aperture i.e. f/22. This is in accordance with specification. Due to the different AF systems between DSLR and Z series cameras the preview is limited to f/5.6 with the Z series as the image would possibly become too dark to achieve AF. Due to the different way the two systems work this is not an issue for DSLR which always AF with the aperture wide open but this is nt the case with the Z series, hence the limitation.
      If you want to preview the depth of field on the subject when shooting, use Custom Setting f2: "Custom control assignment" and assign “Preview” to a camera control and then press the control to confirm it. Here is the online manual to help you also. onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z7_z6/en/09_menu_guide_05_f02.html
      However I want to thank you for your suggestion regarding the depth of field on the the Z series cameras . Hudson, I am a Sony A7R4 user and I have the opposite problem. I'm not sure if all digital cameras do this, but I am unable to set the camera into a mode that uses "open aperture metering". Rather the camera is in "depth of field preview" mode all the time. What I loved about my first advanced camera 40+ years ago (Pentax Spotmatic F) was that it allowed for focusing and aperture metering with a fully open aperture regardless of the aperture setting for shooting. This allowed me to place the point of maximal focus exactly where I wanted it and then I used my knowledge of DOF to determine how much in front and behind the focus point was in focus. Of course, the DOF-preview button could also be used to confirm. Problem is the Sony seems to autofocus the aperture setting on the lens, which means there is uncertainty in the point of maximal focus, especially when a restricted aperture setting is selected. This is also true for manual focus, regardless if the aperture setting is made in the camera or on the lens (aperture by wire lenses). My solution has been to transition entirely to either mechanical-linkage aperture manual-focus lenses, or the GM series of f/1.4 autofocus primes, which have a manual aperture ring. I have to have the camera in manual focus mode, but I can whip the aperture ring from f/1.4 when focusing and I manually rotate to the taking aperture quickly before snapping the shutter. This is too slow for people shots, but works for landscapes. Do you have any other ideas on how to emulate traditional open-aperture focusing/metering? We already know from this video that the Nikon Z7 ignores the aperture setting when in manual focus (at least for small apertures), but what happens when in auto focus? Does the Z7 also focus at a mid-range aperture when the setting is for wide-open? Thanks. KQS

    Great vid. Agree, this feature should at least be optionally available in the Z's. But then again, I still don't know how to zoom in with live mode (I'm RTFM challenged). I do... however.... have the new 105/2.8 macro on pre-order. And that lens and this missing feature would be nice together!

    There are still other annoying "problems" too. They just have to look how Fuji did it. After owning a X-H1 I sometimes feel a little bit restricted with my Z6. Fuji has much more configuration options and you can also assign the d-pad with functions (for example).
    But image quality is better and that was the most important thing for me ...
    What I also don't like is that the screen immediately turns black after pressing the shutter button in exposure delay mode. Not sure if there's a reason for that (night photography?). When I shoot handheld and use the exposure delay to reduce movement at very low shutter speeds, I often unintentionally change the composition a little bit because I don't see it on the screen for 1 or 2 seconds. I could use the 2 second self timer but it isn't possible to assign that function to a FN button.
    There's somewhere a very good "please Nikon listen to us and solve that problems with firmware updates" list online that was supported by pro photographers but many points are still unchecked and Nikon seem to ignore it.

    Hi, Thank you for the video. Nikon needs to concentrate more on their firmware for these Z series cameras. I have the Z50, I really like it and using your videos set it up precisely as I need it with the occasional tweak here and there. However, recently upgraded the firmware to 2.10 and this made it difficult for me to change the focal length: a lot of resistance and a clicking sound. After consulting Nikon, they were helpful. On checking RUclips I discovered I was not the only one suffering this, the upgrade engaged the aperture thingy from the body to the lens and hence the noise. I was advised to wait for a further upgrade but it could be some time. I reinstalled 2.03 and lost all my settings but I have my new camera back.

    Hudson, thanks for shining a light on this issue - hopefully Nikon will lend you an ear. This is probably my 2nd TOP peeve on my Z6... close runner up to NOT offering the eye focus options from the "i" control AF-area mode as you get with the Z6/7ii. Cannot image there is any physical/electronic reason to offer this, but rather it is either something they don't prioritize (not as bad) or they chosen to not include in the Z6 Z7 (cripple ware would be my name) to make the "iis" more attractive. PS Love the image of the Guanaco on the monitor in the background! Torres del Paine?

    Thanks Hudson for bringing back again this topic which is really an enormous limitation and a real pain for any landscape photographer.
    That is actually the only reason preventing me switching from my DSLR to the Z7ii...
    This is simply non-sense even from autofocus point of view. First, the Z-mount is one of the largest and is supposed to bring in more light hence speed up autofocus. Or even standard mounts such as Sony's E-mount allow for depth of field preview regardless the aperture you choose. Second, even in movie mode you need autofocus to work reasonnably fast (eye of face detect) which is the case as you shown. So why this limitation for still mode? Complete non-sense...
    I hope as much as you do that Nikon will make things right with firmware update for the sake of anyone sanity. Are you aware of any petition currently running on this matter?
    Thanks again for raising your voice and let's hope it will finally be heard.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

      It's become less and less of an issue for me since I gave up hope of them changing it. Now, when I want hyperfocal, I use frame-wide DOF preview and manually focus as close as I can tell at a reasonable aperture like 11. Then I hit play, zoom in and check. If it's not sufficient, I switch gears to focus shift shooting usually in step width 8 or 9 for landscapes. Works great and lets me use a higher quality aperture. I know I shouldn't need to do that that first test shot to find out, but... It honestly isn't that hard and just 10 years ago it would have seemed like magic to be able to use this method. :-) The quality of my focus shift shooting and simple blending in photoshop to focus stack are quite mind bending. If you want to really up the game and enjoy macro, then Helicon Focus is my favorite too.

  • @RichardAmesMusic
    @RichardAmesMusic 3 года назад

    You can get around this issue using the old-school lens-twist technique. But yeah you shouldn't have to because it makes no sense when using manual focus. Every mirrorless I can find behaves like it should, including the D850 in LV mode, as you've shown. The other weird part of this behavior is that the aperture always pulses when you shoot an image, even if it's already at the proper aperture. This is a big deal for timelapse because it's unnecessary wear that is not necessary with a mirrorless camera. I contacted Nikon support about it a few months ago when I got a Z6 ii. They're clueless.

    M a big fan and when you first mentioned this a year ago, I thought you were absolutely correct. Now I’m onto my fourth Z camera, I can’t help thinking why you don’t just “aperture bracket” and zoom into the playback? In MF you can still nudge the focus, shoot and nudge again, obviously.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад +2

      This isn't about choosing the right aperture, it's about nailing the hyperfocal distance to bring apparent depth of field into the exact zone you need for your scene. True your can focus stack to get that, but why should we need to do that and work in post to blend exposures, when a simple firmware fix would allow us to accurately preview our final aperture and quickly focus the zone we need. Other mirrorless brands don't limit live view aperture this way even in AF mode. Heck these cameras don't limit it in video mode when you flip the lever???

    There is a way to get working DoF, but it requires use of a manual focus lens that isn't AI-P. That's because non-CPU lenses never have the aperture controlled by the body.
    This can work well with some UWA's, especially if using Laowa, non-CPU Zeiss or Voigtlander (or CPU-equipped one in FE mount on a non-electronic adapter)
    It's not a good answer, but it is one reason I'm still shooting an F mount Laowa 15mm f4 instead of going to the 14-30.

    I just find it so crazy that my Sony a6000 that I've had since 2014 (SEVEN years!) has the feature to check focus (& thus see as aperture is adjusted) and yet a brand new Nikon doesn't?! And that Sony makes it so easy to check focus (zoom in to focus point) by just moving the manual focus ring on a lens...no extra buttons to move through to get there. I've wanted to move back to Nikon for awhile now (seriously dislike Sony skin color) but they just aren't making it easy (ie: their autofocus modes and not being able to switch easy between eye and point, etc., which is really important for a mom documenting family life).

      Hmmmm I much prefer the Z camera controls and ergonomics in general. I spent a bunch of time with an A1 last weekend and still prefer the z7ii but a lot. I very much prefer Nikon's eye detect focus system layout and spot subject tracking activation from eye detect (single custom button on and off) , but different opinions make the world more interesting. I've got a lot of videos showing how fabulous I find shooting people, including my kids with it. I love being able to switch to any left or right eye out more distant face in the scene by tapping the joystick right or left. The Z eye/face detect is fabulous and dead easy.

      I'm just used to the size and weight of the a6000 so the z6ii i think would seem big and heavy to me and I'm wary of that since I quit taking photos with my nikon dslr for at least a year before downsizing to the a6000 bc I didn't want to drag my dslr to the zoo or on a walk or a bike ride or hike. Hi Hudson, quick question - is it possible to see depth of field information on the back screen? Information such as 1) focus distance and 2) the range of your depth of field. Some lenses like the new 105 2.8 MS have a 'DISP' button which toggles between these sets of information. I can't find any information on how I can set up the camera to display this information on the back screen. This information would be useful to have for Z lenses that don't have a 'DISP' button. ✌

To my knowledge none of the cameras I've worked with from Sony, Canon, Nikon or Fuji that I know of have that feature. If I'm wrong I'd love to know. Thank you for the feedback. I will follow your advice and trust my eyes. Speaking from experience, the Fuji X100 has on its back display an innovative bar. It shows distance in either ft or meters. IT shows exactly the focus distance and your depth of field (DoF) range. As you change aperture or focus distance you can see the DoF range changing (expanding or contracting). By using this you can really dial in your DoF and it has been very accurate for me. I use ft for macro and meters for landscape. I believe this feature appears on all of their X series cameras including medium format, however, I haven't checked as yet. But Nikon zoom and check with eyes will be just fine. Thanks for your help.🙏👉🆒

  • @andhib

    You are right, Depth of Field preview doesn't work when zoomed in to 100% on my Zs. And, as you say, DOF preview does work on full screen view in manual focus mode with focus peaking enabled when you press a button assigned to preview -which immediately shows the increased DOF with the peaking effect. Surely with f8 to f12 the DOF is so large that it's hard not to get focus -seems easy using mirrorless and focus peaking to get good manual focus at f8+ full screen. I mostly use telephoto lenses wide open so I'm probably missing something here...?

    • @andhib
      @andhib 3 года назад

      Ok, I've just tried manual focus using DOF preview at f10 using peeking and it's less effective than attempting manual focus at f5.6. I guess punching in to 100% with DOF preview in MF everything would have red peaking, whereas at f5.6 you can aim for focus around the hyperlocal distance. So I can see why Nikon may not want to bother with DOF Preview above f5.6. Just use hyperfocal chart and punch in to get the sweet spot then trust ;-)

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад +1

      It's so much more accurate to see with my eyes on the diopter adjusted viewfinder. I am not a huge focus peaking fan, too much digital trust for me. I often use longer focal lengths for landscape work that I need to check. The biggest question is why the limit? Other brands don't. These cameras themselves don't in video mode. Video has peaking too, but filmmakers are meticulous like landscape photographers and they'd scream bloody murder if it behaved this way in video mode too. So why in still mode?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад +1

      Oh and be very wary of hyperfocal charts and apps. I find they're a bit like the old 500 rule we used in the lower resolution days for stars. Use the measure if you must, but check the final image at 100 percent before the light's gone. There's just no substitute for zooming in to 100% at final aperture while focusing. Hyperfocal is a breeze with that. You know that way you've got it right.

    The lack of any kind of video roll/cut indication other than a "Rec" red dot in the most difficult place to see in the frame (center top) leads to operators filming endless shots of their feet because they thought they'd cut and hadn't. The still camera section has confirm beeps for lots of things. Why not video record?
    And while you're at it, Nikon, how about a viewfinder with effective eye relief? It's nearly impossible for eyeglass wearers to see the entire frame. Allow eyeglass wearers to shrink the viewfinder image slightly on demand.

    Does d8 (Apply Settings to Live View) have any impact on DOF Preview?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад

      No, it only affects whether the live view stays bright or emulates the exposure you have chosen. It doesn't override the f5.6 limitation.

    On the f mount nikon bodies when you depress the dof button , it stops down lens to working aperture, screen gets dark as you stop down lens..not get brighter as you indicated!!

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад

      That's true in the optical viewfinder only. In live view on the DSLRs the DOF preview does the opposite (as I demonstrate) and opens the aperture wide for a brighter cleaner view. Pressing it again takes you back to the default stopped down live view of final aperture. It's been that way since live view debuted. You can see yourself in my video or test it on your own camera very easily.

    Why not ?put the lens into manual and use focus peaking?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

      You still only see the focus peaking for f5.6 unless you hit DOF preview and then I just don't trust it like I do my own eye looking at the details at 100%. Focus peaking is a good cheater way to grab a quick focus, but it's no substitute for analysis at 100% with your own eye at final aperture.

    This is what happens when electronics and computers take over tasks that were done by a single mechanical lever for decades. Nikon is not the only one who suffers from these ' mishaps ', Canon not so long ago was suffering from some sort of overheating problem due to the limitations of the firmware. For my part, besides the D800 and D7200, I stick to mechanical film cameras. They work for ever.

    Bud,
    Manual focus still trumps AF for precision(nail it) even with mirrorless. The solution to DOF is in your hands, the D850. Don’t count on Nikon to release a firmware update. The Z7/II is not a D850 replacement. Probably will have to wait for the Z9/Z8.

      You're entitled to your opinion my friend, different opinions keep the world more interesting. However, I'll bet it would change after a solid two weeks with a z7ii. I've owned the d70, 200, 300, 700, 610, 800, 750, 810, 500, and 850. I've worn out nearly all of them except the 850 and the 500. Why? They hit my back studio shelf relatively new after I got the z6 and z7 and never came back off. In my experience, the Z cameras are more than D850 replacements. The 850/500 combo are the best dslrs that will ever be made, but I haven't reached for them for years. The Z cameras are just far more advanced tools. Can't imagine going back despite this one annoyance. Nikon's been stellar with firmware since release. If enough people take note, this can join the already impressive firmware improvement list.

    • @paulbusby2013
      @paulbusby2013 3 года назад

      It's hard to believe 'cos it ain't true. Focus Peaking as implemented on Z system cameras by colouring in-focus areas with the chosen shade with 3 levels of sensitivity to DoF - it works with manual focus only. You can also have magnification of the focus point by assigning a button to do so.
      The main issue is that when the view is set to show DoF, it only does so up to a max of f5.6. You have to stop down the lens for smaller apertures where the display becomes very noisy. I don't have any experience how other manufacturers do this. This is one area where mirrorless cameras are very different to DSLRs!

    Hi,
    I like to know if you face the same challenge that Nikon Z7 ii when I shoot at iso 64-400 at high contrast scene -1 to -3 ev have color noise issue at Camera Standard profile. Please help me with how to fix that. I thought this the best landscape camera and I feel this doesn't have the dynamic range they mentioned. I just bought this camera and I love files but it sucks recovery. Any help will be great please.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад

      No, it's the same sensor as the A7Riv and z7. They have dual a channel iso system that kicks into a different channel at 400iso. At 400iso and above they have less read noise and less dynamic range. With a well exposed image below iso 400 the signal totally obscures the read noise and you get more dynamic range, but if you underexpose and pull shadows you're better off at or above iso 400 believe it or not.
      The real key in high contrast is to bracket and combine into a linear HDR output in your software of choice. When doing that, I bracket 3 stops apart at iso 400. :)

      I adore mine. I will be taking about it, but just remember not to underexpose at iso's less than 400. It's the same with the D850 too. Same sensor. I'd urge you to keep with it and spend enough time to make an informed decision. I could never go back. Love my Z cameras!

    • @bmwcar335

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto thanks for your reply. So you don’t shoot under iso 400 and what picture profile do you use?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 года назад +1

      I do shoot below 400, but I don't underexpose below 400. Sony's latest sensors (in Nikons best cameras too) have an iso step where you lose dynamic range, but decrease read noise above it. So long as you don't underexpose you don't notice under 400 (the Z7's iso step) and you get better dynamic range. If your signal to noise ratio drops (underexpose) you're better off shooting at 400 and above for shadow recovery with less noise. It's the physics of the sensor.
      Picture profile has no effect whatsoever on your raw files. I use the flat profile to get a more accurate approximation of the histogram for my raw files since the histogram is based on the preview jpeg rendered for camera playback and uses the chosen profile.

    The more expensive the gear the less hassle and issues should there be when using it .
    I feel the video would have been far more interesting on hearing from the person who actually thought his/her Idea was worthy of putting into the camera .
    I would have loved to hear the excuses on the glaring flaw

      There are a lot of things I'd miss from the z7ii. The controls layout, ergonomics and customizability still seem better to me. I also prefer the Nikon eye detect system for people. For landscape, people and low-light work I'll take the Z's every time. For wildlife and action, I'd prefer an A9ii. That high iso performance is invaluable with long lens work in darker situations. The 50MP is really all about 8k. Good 4k is so good. Plenty for me.
