Simon, not only do you have vast knowledge on photography, but perhaps most importantly, you have a wonderful, lovely way of presenting and explaining things! Thank you so much!
Little known fact regarding longer lenses creating a thinner depth of field: using a shorter focal length lens of the same aperture, but moving closer so that your subject is the same size in the frame, the depth of field is the same!
I really love the blurry background.... I can't afford a really expensive one but I got a Canon 80d I haven't learned it I like it better than the Nikon D5000 I call it a clunker maybe it's the lens
Always great content. Thank you. I am also impressed how you have developed as a RUclipsr in such a short time. The videos are so much slicker in 2024. 👏👏👏
After asking people for year's( and being told it was just LUCK) ,this was the fist time someone told me how EXACTLY to shoot a sunstar. THANK-YOU very much for that. I'm a happy camper.🤩
After owning a dslr for 4 years now and after the struggle for knowlege about photography, I finally understand everything and this gentleman right here just gave you, me and everyone a $1,000 workshop advice. I have watched thousands of videos, bought digital and physical book for photography etc but none has helped me except for this amazing guy. For anyone reading this, I am telling you, all of what he said in here will elevate you from amateur to professional if you actually absorb what he said in this video. Thank you for making this free and available for everyone. This video also eliminate the mind of amateurs who keep thinking " I dont have the best camera that is why I suck, I need to buy a new one " you can literally do this to any camera cheap or high end today. DSLR or mirrorless or snapchat cameras, if you understand this video, you can take amazing photos in ang camera you have.
Yes certainly learning how to use any camera to its very best capabilities is best practice. I always notice Simon has the very best camera equipment so there is something to be said having a most feature rich device if a high standard of photography is your goal. On the other hand, how did the photographers manage 20, 30 or even 50 years ago to produce great images?
184k views and only 9500 likes. Come on, guys. Hit the button. It's not often you find a video explaining something so clearly and it not be overly wordy. Precise and to the point, with clear examples. I appreciate this guy.
This guy is a gem! I could listen to what he says for hours on end, and I don' t even care that much for the business of taking photographs, and I end up learning things I never even so much as thought of! Yours is a rare gift, Simon!
This is so incredibly helpful and really sets you apart from a lot the other photography “educators” on RUclips, in that your content is, imo, much more useful and educational. Thank you so much!
I’ve been doing photography for a year and have asked multiple instructors to clarify to rule of having your subject one third of the distance from the background. I never understood it until now when I saw your diagram!
Summer of 2023 I discovered your channel and the opening song was stuck in my head as I watched your videos every night after shooting all day. It was a great summer. Cheers from San Diego
I learned about aperture as a kid this way: Make a fist and leave a small opening and look through the opening at something in the distance. What you're looking at will appear sharper than if you weren't using the "fist viewer." Now gradually widen the fist opening and you will see the object in the distance become less sharp.
Truly great information on Aperture!!!! So far every video I have watched by has been very HELPFUL!!! Thank you!! Especially because you are sharing all this for free...👏
I’m trying to cut back on RUclips’ers who I follow, I get so many reminders that I struggle for time to watch stuff. BUT, I have to subscribe to your channel, the subject’s you cover are so good, the quality of the images you use to promote the content are superb and I can’t wait to see more from you. Thanks for the hard work putting these together, it hasn’t gone un-noticed by me and it really shows 👏👏👏
Hi Simon! Love your channel and the way you explain things. One small remark: the aperture is the FOCAL LENGTH/diameter of the opening of the „hole“ not the length of the lens/diameter. But the explaination is perfect.
This goes way beyond the description I was taught before where wider aperture just means more light and thinner depth of field. This is one of the most interesting and useful photography videos I’ve seen, one of my favorites from your channel! Thank you Simon!
Simon, I just found your channel, and I'm soo pleased! I've had some success as a real estate photographer for 7 years, but I'm a one trick pony! Any time people ask me to do anything other than what's in my skill set, I have the toughest time. I've been devouring your videos and feel like I already have a MUCH better grasp on how to use my camera more efficiently.
These are some great tips. When I started my photography journey, I bought an entry-level camera and spent the majority of my money on learning so I did a diploma in photography. The great thing was my assignments made me test all these settings and I had a professional photographer as my tutor correcting me on my settings, light and photography.
Just catching up with some of your older videos and how wonderful they are. Full of easy to understand explanations that even I can get to grips with. Yours is the best and easiest to understand “photography made simple” RUclips channels out there by a country mile. Thank you so much
This is the first aperture video that I have understood. The graphics referring to depth of field in conjunction with aperture size were particularly helpful
In over 50 years of very amateur photography, I’ve never seen anyone explain photography as well as superb Simon. And love his splendid photographs used in videos.
Thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge! And for talking so clearly about fundamental things that you have long mastered but others like me still struggle sometimes to understand - and not in a condescending way that makes me feel silly but really sharing and encouraging. Greetings from Germany and thanks again!
This is one of the very best explanation on DOF that I've seen so far. Very easy to follow and understand, especially the explanation why something works as it is.
You mentioned a neutral density filter for your waterfall photography. Please consider a video on various filters and their uses. Thanks for the videos! Super helpful!
I would add to the other very favorable comments that you've received, and that is that you have a voice that would do well in broadcasting. I think it adds interest to the already fine content you present. You have excellent production values.
Never touched the AV-mode before I found your videos on youtube. Tried to use this mode for the first time today and I'm over the moon with the results & differences compared to my earlier pictures. Thanks for posting these videos! I now finally understand the impact of aperture, shutter speed & ISO.
One of my favorite videos! I actually understood everything you said about the subject! There are very very few videos out there like yours!! Great job for the beginning photographer!!
You are by far the best at explaining technical aspects of photography. I’ve watched so many of your videos and have absorbed so much information. Thanks!
Just recently stumbled upon your chanel. I’ve been shooting most of my life ( just turned 70, gasp!), and though your vids are review of learned techniques, I love your plain english explanation of them. No need for all the ‘techno jargon’ most ‘educators’ spew. Your vids are easy to follow and understand. Your examples are stunning as well. Your labour of love is sure to help many. Keep it up. Much admiration here.
Just getting into photography and I find this Pro’s videos to be incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I’ll be sure to watch many more. Keep up the amazing work and sharing of knowledge. Bravo.
Thanks !! This clears up a lot of questions I have about aperture. I'm using a 70-300mm lens with Fstops 4.5-6.3 in mildly low light to get morning pics of hummingbirds at the feeder that hangs in the shade of a large tree behind my house. Distance from camera to subject is about 25 feet. The pics come out pretty good but not super crisp like I would like them to be. I'll try experimenting with smaller apertures to see what happens !
While watching the video that's exactly what popped up in my mind too. Absolutely fantastic video. I have learnt much more in less than 14 minutes than what I have learnt about photography over the years. 👏👏👏
Simon: This is by far the most useful and understandable aperture video I've seen. I learned a lot. Thank you for putting so much thought and effort into your videos!
Thanks! Great video:) I've replaced the "F" with a 1 as in a (math) fraction: 1/4 is a bigger value (a bigger hole) than 1/11 Easy to explain and makes the illogical aperture numbers easy to understand and visualise. An excellent online tool to learn and practise how the DoF works is free and called dofsimulator net :) Beautiful tool.
I don't even have my first camera yet but I'm learning so much from your videos. And it's making me even more excited to get it and experiment with all the tips I'm getting from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
So very well explained and by a fellow Maritimer too! I've been going through all of Simon's tutorial videos and I've picked up an incredible amount of knowledge for use with my DSLR. Even though I've had an SLR for some time now, I've realized how little I really used it. No more just putting it on F11 or F8 and hoping for the best. I've re-discovered my enjoyment of taking photos and my telephoto lens is no longer just gathering dust - thanks Simon.
When I use Aperture priority, we do the work around to use for instance a set 200 ISO. We can do this on both the Nikon D5300 and the Sony A73. This helps alot when I am using Aperture priority but the ISO is higher then I want and it truly changes the sharpness on the image without the noise! High ISO settings tend to be noisy on both cameras when it gets set too high in the priority mode. Its a great work around to improve the image quality. If you set the ISO too low to work with the aperture set on priority mode, it simple won't take the picture. So its a practice shot before using it at times. Well work using and my husband was setting up both cameras the other day with this......I got the clearest Raven shots and a very far off eagle shot as well. So to confirm, the cameras both set the shutter speed only by doing this.
Simon, you are a brilliant instructor. I have watched many great photographers explain how to control the aperture and the effect it has on the DoF and fail miserably due to making it far too complex, You have explained this in simple terms, making it clear as day. Thank you.
Superb Sir!! You are hitting it out of the park with your value addition. Have been taking pictures for 25 years without understanding why my DOF is shallow with big apertures and the converse with small apertures. Today, I am clear as a crystal, thanks to you. Brilliant!!
Thank you Simon! Your videos are great. I was into photography decades ago, long before there ever was a DSLR camera. But now I am learning photography from you. can't imagine such high quality content is available for free. Thank you Simon for creating this channel
Glad you enjoy it!

Which program do you use to layer the images with different focuses on top of each other? 🧐
@@cloud.3 Photoshop

This might be the best photography channel on RUclips.
Glad you think so!
The best photography RUclips channel

Yesseri. I am glad I found this knowledgable man. He is a great help!
Simon is the best!
Simon your clear and concise narration is what sets you apart from many on You Tube.
The best and most professional lecture in photography I've ever watched here in RUclips.
My favorite Teacher on RUclips Academy. 10/10
Mine too
Terrific video, a crystal clear explanation of how to use the aperture with a full explanation and examples. Love it. Thank you Simon.

I am so grateful for this. High quality and very detailed, yet easy to understand.
I'm glad it was helpful!
I really love the fact that you are not sticking to rules and saying we should avoid the sun flares!
A great explanation of aperture in photography. Great techniques especially sunshine behind objects.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautifully explained in detail & in a very simple language, amazed again!
I just bought a serious camera instead of the common point and shoot. I appreciate your information . This has become my go to channel.
Your content is always so professional and well produced. This was clearly the best explanation of aperture that I have found online. Thank you!
Wow, thanks!
This dude is a legend, other youtuber the younger gen focus on tech and not lens and how to shoot.
Your videos are the best out there...straight on to the point and no ads in between and best of all really high quality.....thanks a lot.
Hi Simon! Love your channel and the way you explain things.
One small remark: the aperture is the FOCAL LENGTH/diameter of the opening of the „hole“ not the length of the lens/diameter.
But the explaination is perfect.
Thanks for that! Actually, even more accurately, the diameter measure is from the entrance pupil, rather than the diameter.
If you can explain it as simple as this, you know what youre talking about 👏👏
The sunstar tip alone was worth it. Of course I'm more than happy to watch the entire video to get there.
Would love to see a video on different types of lenses and what they’re best for!
This goes way beyond the description I was taught before where wider aperture just means more light and thinner depth of field. This is one of the most interesting and useful photography videos I’ve seen, one of my favorites from your channel! Thank you Simon!
Something just clicked. You explain things clearly and simply. As a beginner thank you so much!
I just got a 50mm (finally, after two years) and it's a F1.8, my mind is being blown away and I'm just starting to use it.
Simon, I just found your channel, and I'm soo pleased! I've had some success as a real estate photographer for 7 years, but I'm a one trick pony! Fantastic!
ahhh that "focus stacking" for landscape is interesting!
Love this vid. Fills in the gaps on aperture that have haunted me for years.
Your explanation of settings is so clear and precise, the best I’ve ever seen on you tube, your an amazing teacher.

@7:13 This has got to be the most iconic/ultimate/definitive shoreline photo I’ve ever seen!
Thanks very much!

What I like most,,,, I always learn something new Thank you
So nice of you

The democratization of knowledge on full display here.
Thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge! What a remarkable clarity in explaining the topic! The photos shown are very impressive as well!
Thanks!
This is one of the very best explanation on DOF that I've seen so far. Very easy to follow and understand, especially the explanation why something works as it is.

Simon’s explanations and ideas are fantastic - help exploit the capabilities of my cameras

Simon, I almost watch your videos exclusively. Have been since I started doing wildlife. I love everything you've taught. Thanks so much!
Wow, thanks
It's unbelievable that these wonderful contents are available easily, thanks a million Simon🌹
Glad you like them!
The detail in your video's you teach us is second to none. Love your channel and thank you.
Very knowledgable and professional way of explaining. I've leaned so much from you.
Never touched the AV-mode before I found your videos on youtube. Tried to use this mode for the first time today and I'm over the moon with the results & differences compared to my earlier pictures. Thanks for posting these videos! I now finally understand the impact of aperture, shutter speed & ISO.
Thanks Simon! F 8 worked out perfectly. I allow too much time to pass between photo shoots and forget how to use the camera.
One of my favorite videos! I actually understood everything you said about the subject! There are very very few videos out there like yours!! Great job for the beginning photographer!!
Awesome! Thank you!
This felt like a 14 minute masterclass on Aperture, really great video
You are by far the best at explaining technical aspects of photography. I’ve watched so many of your videos and have absorbed so much information. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
I love your photography! Thank you for the tutorial. Very helpful

Hi Simon, That has to be the best "DEPTH OF FEILD explained" I've ever come across. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Wow, thanks!
Simon: This is by far the most useful and understandable aperture video I've seen. I learned a lot. Thank you for putting so much thought and effort into your videos!
You have a way of explaining things like a professor. I found this channel very professional and informative. Thank you, Simon.
Simon, you articulate these concepts beautifully. Thank you.
Thanks! Great video:) I've replaced the "F" with a 1 as in a (math) fraction: 1/4 is a bigger value (a bigger hole) than 1/11 Easy to explain and makes the illogical aperture numbers easy to understand and visualise. Great tip!
Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and experience with the rest of us .
One my favourite photography channel ❤️
New subscriber and new to photography. I have started binging you videos soaking up any knowledge I can to help me learn.
I don't even have my first camera yet but I'm learning so much from your videos. And it's making me even more excited to get it and experiment with all the tips I'm getting from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
I am also impressed by this costly knowledge but without a rupee. ❤
You're very welcome!
Thank you.
Master class on Aperture & DOF! Very useful in creative, art photography. Thank you.
Thank you sir, I just want to say that I can understand your explanation even though I'm a complete newbie and just got into photography.
Great to hear!
Often listen to you repeatedly, still find interesting ❤
Glad you enjoy it!
Superb Sir!! You are hitting it out of the park with your value addition. Have been taking pictures for 25 years without understanding why my DOF is shallow with big apertures and the converse with small apertures. Today, I am clear as a crystal, thanks to you. Brilliant!!
I really enjoy your explanations. Having ADHD, I feel you give a great balance of information with opinion/discussion
Thank you Simon! Your videos are great. I was into photography decades ago, long before there ever was a DSLR camera. But now I am learning photography from you. I am blind in one eye now, and have very poor vision in the other, but I have glasses, and I am going to try. I bought an old DSLR camera, and it will be here tomorrow or the next day. I can only try…it won’t hurt. Thank you so much!
You're a great teacher. One of the best ways I've seen these concepts explained. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I've been shooting for a long time after watching hours of videos daily learning, but the way you just explained these different aperture situations was perfect
Thanks very much!
Thank you for the video. I'm going away on vacation in December and I want to take pictures while I'm there. My dad's lending me his old cannon 550D and I'm a complete novice. I'm looking forward to putting what I learned from this to use.
Watched a number of videos providing information over the last year .. some are very good, but I always now come back to yours
I find them very easy to understand, and have come to the conclusion, that yours are the best ( for me anyway)
Thank you 👍🏻
Welcome back!
Very well explained for a person new to DSLR photography and very helpful.
7:17 THANK YOU SIMON! I have been wondering forever where one puts one's focus point - not only for landscapes and pics with deep DOF but also for street photography and other general purposes. Ever thought of doing a video on "Where should I put my focus point"? Some more golden info here...thank you again!
Thank you so much! I now how these things work (more or less), but I have never understood WHY aperture effect the result the way it does. You really explain tings, so everyone can understand.
Glad it helped!
People not in photography also can see your video. It just awesome and pleasant
Thank you so much 😀
This is a fantastic video (again!). Very clear on the basics and then some terrific more pro tips. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am surely a better photographer after this video. I will be thankful for the every single new things i learnt here for my whole carrier of photography. God bess you ❤️
Thanks!
Simon, your detailed and simplified explanations make it so anyone can snap amazing photographs! 5 stars out of 5!
