Buy this amp with a Maxon OD808 or a Tube Screamer. Cut the gain, boost the volume, keep the tone moderate, and you'll get the best metal sound ever. Forget the Metal Zone, and just distortion pedals in general.
i used to hate distortion pedals but now i have a mxr fullbore metal and love it with my micro terror. but prob gunna get this to have more amp gain soon
I use a East River od through the lead channel and an isp decimator 2 then a boss 7 band eq through the effects loop. My setup has a ton of low mid so i scoop out the 400hz in a check looking type setting with the 3.2k the highest (+4db) then drop the 6.4k a notch. Badass...
The EVH LB Amps are great ( I played one over the weekend ) but I think these are a level above those. The Peavey is more articulate sounding, more versatile, includes a Reverb, and these just overall have a higher-quality sound that the EVH can't match. Well done Hartley :)
Agreed, I've owned both and really feel the Peaveys still sound the best by far, whether lunchbox or full 120/100, Ed should have hired James Brown to design the EVH stuff because everything he did for Peavy is amazing. He also designed the Kustom Double Cross and later the Schecter amps.
Genuine Chocolate Face Man and get a huge name behind it and they'd sell like hot cakes... I wonder who they could get known for branding himself with 4 numbers...
Just like I hoped, this sounds fantastic. All the more as this vid shows how great 6505s sound for things other than subterranean tunings and chugging metal. Not that they don't do that better than anything else, just not necessarily what they were designed for. A happy accident for death metal! But seriously, these amps are far more versatile than the "5150/6505s only do one sound but do it well" people give them credit for. They do indeed do many sounds and styles VERY well, and this 20 watter can wear the name proudly!!
Is there a way to record directly out of it without the speaker cabinet simulation on it? I would be very interested if that were possible because I would like to use external IR in my DAW.
great little rig. I just bought a 6505 112 plus combo and I love it. if your in to a good metal, classic rock sound, this amp is perfect for it. 5 pre amp tubes and 2 -6L6 power tubes.
chuck jones i wouldn't be either, i've tried the 6505+ 112 in store and wasn't impressed with the 6505MH i can use a 1x12 or 2x12 or 4x12 cab, headphones or simulated speaker out. plus its also cheaper than the combo and sounds exactly the same to me
Sounds nice through a 412 cab, but I'm interested in hearing what it sounds like through the 112 cab made to accompany this head. I don't want to have to buy a 412 cab for this amp.
Sweet! Cuz I just bought this head, with the 2x12 cabinet. But I have a focusrite interface for recording, so this is good to know. My amp arrives next week.
Debating on this vs. a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18. This is a much newer product and everything, but I'm wondering if the direct sound of this amp is better than the Tubemeister 18's. Can't seem to find much more information on the matter, bah.
***** I've tried both. The Peavey is much more scooped scounding. The TM18 is a hifi-rectifier sounding thing. Doesn't cut through the mix like the Peavey.
reuben acciano I didn't say anything was scooped, did I? I was referring to both amps overall. The TM18 is much more thinner. If you want to say the Peavey is scooped, fine, but at least the lows and highs cut through.
dragonzrmetal I had the 6505+ 112 combo too. I went to a Mini Rectifier, and I use it on 10w mode all the time. PLENTY loud. Definitely go Peavey. Much more bass and character than the TM18.
so my TS1 and TS2 are both blinking and I'm not getting any volume. The manual says to replace the tube once they go red, but do I need to get new ones in this to solve the problem?
Can you use the first channel as a total clean channel and make it to a crunch channel with the switch? Or has it to be slightly driven to achieve this?
If this is the remake of the Peavey EVH 5150, i'm assuming it would be a great amp for that eddie van halen sound yeah? Im trying to find an amp that will give me his sound without the cost of an EVH amp
Is this too hot for a straightforward punk sound? I'm into southern rock/punk, I could use a high gain amp, but I could also use some decent cleans and I don't need a super brutal tone. I'm more into sludgey, midrange tones, would this work?
Mikey McDowell Personally I wouldn't go for it if that's the case for you. The midrange on these amps are very tight, and many of the records people consider "brutal" were made by the big brother of this amp.
i have the mt 15 the mt15 uses full size 6L6 and 6, 12ax7s and it literally is god. this am0 has shitty el84 and theyre so fizzy hairy and fuzzy no matter what you push the amp with its just a horrible sounding amp
Hi +HEGuitarTracks! The cab in this video is a Peavey Valve King. You can find it here: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ValveK412Sl. Thanks for watching!
You can run it through the board, but if your playing Auditoriums, setting up a quarter wall of cabs, probably have a roadie or 10. Sound has come a long way.
+alex it definetly is. in 20watt and an 4x12 cab plugged in it is loud as hell. and if you need it even more loud, you still can mic the amp or use the emulated speaker output.
+Rick Ferguson (KarateRick) The 6505 can get more of a modern high gain sound. The valveking can get pretty heavy too it's just a bit of a different sound, also from what I've heard the valveking can get better cleans
Hi, Bothrops! Yes, the footswitch can be used to switch between the Clean channel and the Rhythm channel. It can also switch on the Crunch mode of the Rhythm channel so that you have three footswitchable sounds available to you. Thanks for your interest! Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320
+Jay Sambuco, each channel: Rhythm and Lead, have their own output controls that are each labeled "Post-Gain." The controls labeled "Pre-Gain" are also volume controls, but they affect the input stage of the amp, creating more saturation, distortion, compression, etc. Ok, that's the long answer, but I wanted to make sure I covered it! Thanks! Don Carr
+SweetwaterSound What if I were to put the "post gain" very loud would that make my sound be distorted even on clean? Or does only "pre Gain" make the sound distorted?
Wait. Instead of having a single foot switch with four buttons, they created two foot switch inputs on the back for two separate foot switches that do different things? Really?
I wish the EVH 5150 III had switching options for the power amp. A single 6L6, triode wired in single-ended Class A, could yield 5W. Just imagine the option of gunning it like a 50's Fender Champ, but you still have that EVH preamp... Sorry Peavey, it is just a recurring dream of mine.
Slicklickz I know: that is why I apologized to Peavey. I was reminded of what I want for the 5150 III (and pretty much all other amps) because this is a video about a lower watt 6505 (i.e. 5150).

For home use, I get that. But a 20W EL84 amp for a small club with a heavy-hitting drummer (like most metal drummers) and a full band is going to be tough. You're going to push it pretty hard which means you're going to get loose and muddy power amp distortion. And that's not what you want from an amp like a 6505. It's perfect for an amp like an AC15 or a DRRi but not an amp that gets it's drive from the preamp. The 60W 112 combo is the best 6505 for a small club if you actually want something that sounds and responds like a 6505.

Ironically, "enthusiasm" actually means “inspiration or possession by a god.” Enthusiasm entered the English language around the beginning of the 17th century. The minute you put a USB port on this amp, you have completely lost me! Why in the world would you do something so freaking stupid! I don't even care if it's practical at this point, you got to understand people in the market for these kinds of amps are purest!
I'd say the opposite - Peavey know their market here, as a lot of people buying these amps will be wanting to record them at home. This makes it very simple without going through a dedicated interface to record the amp directly into their computer then add speaker impulse responses to taste. The interface will be doing all it's stuff on a totally seperate routed channel at the end of the signal chain anyway so "purists" need not even acknowledge it.
sonicwingnut are you sure that you can use IR using the usb out? I think peavey included a speaker simulation that you can't turn off. So you can't use IR on top a cabinet simulation…
Bruno Nunes Not sure, I just bought the Laney IRT Studio because Peavey are apparently gonna take forever to get these things to the UK, very similar back panel to this and the cab sim select applies to both analog and USB outputs. Personally I just use the XLR DI output because I have a decent sound card. Definitely worth a look if you can't wait for this amp - more features, fully-valved, rack-mountable and I picked mine up for £245 on ebay.

Yes, andy T, there's a "mini cab" for this head. You can see it here: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/6505PlusM112
Great explanation, playing variety of tones and what amp can do non existing.
Imagine if they made one like that, only bigger.
Genuine Chocolate Face Man and get a huge name behind it and they'd sell like hot cakes... I wonder who they could get known for branding himself with 4 numbers...

Bruh, do you even, DO YOU EVEN BRO?
+Genuine Chocolate Face i dunno if peavey could handle making a full size amp they should stick to the mini's
+alvarg aaah Van Halen used there famous 5150 amp for years

Man, that is one sweet little amp! I haven't been this excited about an amp since Marshall released the Class 5! :)
Much more, it`s a full tube audio interface! the best buddy for home recording
Is there a way to record directly out of it without the speaker cabinet simulation on it? I would be very interested if that were possible because I would like to use external IR in my DAW.
Sounds like a proper 6505! Was afraid it wouldn't being a mini head and all. Can't wait until it comes out!

+alvarg the micro head is definitely the way to go. I bought it plus the Peavey 2x12 cab loaded with Celestion Greenbacks and it's KILLER.
I have one on pre-order and I can't wait.
PRS custom + peavey 6505 = absolute win
Keeley compressor plus into an overdrive really tightens this thing up. You dont need the gain past 4!
I noticed this amp doesn’t have a volume knob, how do u raise the volume on this??
Is it me or does the youtube compression negate what they're trying to prove with the resonance control?
Sounds nice through a 412 cab, but I'm interested in hearing what it sounds like through the 112 cab made to accompany this head. I don't want to have to buy a 412 cab for this amp.
you made the amp sound bigger running it thru a Peavey 4x12 .Id like to hear it thru a 1x12 or a 2x12
Nice avatar.
Eddie sure did help Peavey and every other company that could get there hands on him
Can we plug in directly into a focusrite or some thing like this for recording?
Yeah. And it also has an USB output!
Sweet! Cuz I just bought this head, with the 2x12 cabinet.
But I have a focusrite interface for recording, so this is good to know.
My amp arrives next week.
Can I use it directly with headphones without a cab?
The simple answer is yes.
Nice demo, is there a mini cab?
yes its a 1x12
I couldn't hear much difference when the 'Resonance' control was changed. The 'Presence' control was noticeable though.
Sounds like the original 5150 amp. Nice.

Very impressed I'm going to buy one
Why run it through a 4x12. Most ppl that buy a mini aren't gonna cart around a 4x12?
It happens, I see people gig running Dual Terrors and Dark Terrors 16ohms on a 4x12. But the convenience of this amp with a 2x12 would be nice.
You can get a nice 4x12 much cheaper than a nice amp head, that's how it was for me anyway ha
Can you use the first channel as a total clean channel and make it to a crunch channel with the switch? Or has it to be slightly driven to achieve this?

Valveking cab?
killer riff at the beginning!
Will the tubes break so fast that you need a warning LED?
Seriously, who needs to continuously monitor their tube health?
I have one... fantastic amp to record at home... small stages works very well...

Use a keeley compressor plus and an od in front!
i might sound noob, but how do you controll the volume if there's no volume knob?
daan oudhuizen post-gain is channel volume. pre-gain is like normal gain.

Now this is a good useable wattage, unless your playing a stadium :-)
You're gonna be mic'd in a stadium anyhow
It's actually not as usable as the bigger ones. It's not like a Fender DRRi where you want some breakup. The 6505 gets all of it's gain from the preamp and you want to avoid poweramp clipping. That's why they're 120W. You want all the clean headroom you can get. Their master volumes work fine.
