"Hanukkah" Music Piano Medley

Today 11/28/2013 is no ordinary day. It is a coincidental meeting of Hunukkah, Thansgiving as well as my mom's and best friend's birthdays. I figured I had better commemorate this uber holiday known as Thanks-birth-ukah with a special piano medley.
I decided on a "Hanukkah" themed medley because I was starting to feel a little guilty about having already posted two medleys of Christmas music without acknowledging my own religious tradition. Hanukkah is in quotes because anyone who actually knows anything about the holiday would know that this music has absolutely nothing to do with it. Since I couldn't find a single Hanukkah song I actually liked, I decided to put together some great music that seemed to capture the essential themes of Hanukkah (and many other Jewish holidays) -- Jewish struggle and faith.
I decided to include two Debbie Friedman songs because she is probably one of the greatest Jewish composers who ever lived. As an example, I used to really look forward to religious school as a kid, thinking I must be a deeply religious person and even considered the possibility of a future as a rabbi. Turned out that I was actually just a really big Debbie Friedman fan.
In order, the songs are:
Schindler's List Theme -- John Williams
Exodus Theme -- Ernest Gold
Lech Lecha -- Debbie Friedman (My Torah Portion! Also typically read in November. I had to discuss the history of circumcision in front of a congregation of over a hundred people as a 13 year old...without laughing)
The Hatikvah (Israeli national anthem -- music supposedly derived from a long dead Italian guy)
Shema (and you shall love) -- Debbie Friedman -- (Probably the most important prayer in any Jewish service -- why people just chant it instead of singing this amazing song is beyond me).

HOW WONDERFUL!!!!! I am sitting at the Comfort Suites in Creswell Oregon on my monthly schlep to Seattle for Chemotherapy. I bought a small turkey pot pie and lit my menorah in the window of the 3rd floor room, then I powered up and saw this just sitting as the ONLY email I got from 9am until now. So many Christmas songs were written by people who are Jewish, starting with Mendelssohn to Johnny Marks, via Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, etc. that I wouldn't feel too guilty about the Christmas-only medleys to date. I teach piano, and was asking my students if they wanted to learn a Christmas song and one little guy informed me that they did not celebrate Christmas in his Jewish household. We managed to find a Hanukkah song, though it was merely a refit on the Taio Cruz hit, Dynamite (Candlelight, it's called).
