  • Last night, Paul Newman's personal Paul Newman Daytona sold for a record-breaking $17.75 million, making it the most expensive wristwatch ever sold. Ever since news of the watch's consignment to Phillips broke in the Wall Street Journal on June 1, 2016, the watch world has been buzzing. What would it sell for? Who would it sell to? What would happen after the sale?
We have covered this watch extensively, from placing it on the cover of the HODINKEE Magazine, Volume 1, to going hands-on with it and featuring it on Friday Live last week. In the week leading up to the auction, we spoke to a slew of watch world insiders, including dealers, collectors, auctioneers, and HODINKEE readers, to see what they had to say about the Paul Newman Daytona and what it means to the watch world and collecting as a whole.
Now, with the sale behind us, and the dust beginning to settle, let's take a look at the story of how a stainless steel chronograph made horological history.

love this story and for those who are deeply cynical, this was the true story of the sale - The watch had been given to Newman by his wife, Joanne Woodward, in 1968. She bought it from a Tiffany & Co store in New York and had it engraved with the message “Drive carefully”, in light of her husband’s fledgling motor racing career.
In 1984 Newman gave the watch to his daughter’s then boyfriend, James Cox, who did not own a watch, saying it “keeps good time”.
After Cox and Newman’s daughter Nell split up they remained on good terms, and they jointly put the watch up for auction. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Nell Newman Foundation and the Newman’s Own Foundation.

When you think about it though, rich people donate a lot more than $15 million to charity. So basically, the buyer made a $15M donation to a fantastic charity and got an incredible watch along with it. There are suspicions that it was actually Rolex that bought the watch, but I’m not so sure.

I feel like this was more of a flex among rich people than actually the watch. Like without the auction and the pressure of bidding; these people wouldn’t of paid anything close

Good news for everyone who already owns a vintage Rolex. Bad news for anyone who wants to start collecting vintage timepieces... This auction will for sure cause an avalanche in Vintage-Watch values... Much like vintage Ferraris...

Is that the original BUND STRAP or did they change it to a smaller strap for the auction?

That leather would of been worn to shit, and I'd be shocked if it was the original. Vintage anything holds up better~
