I just want t say, I just found this channel a few weeks ago and I am very impressed and am glad I caught this potion of your channel about the responsibilities of building boats etc. anyway, your have mad skills and the boats are very unique. I lived in Florida and Texas where john boats were a small part of life and never have I seen anything as detailed as you do. please keep up the good work.
IAM going to build a back on mine to cover the gas and battery but I think I'm going to try fiberglassing the deck then gel coat over. The Reason is I need the experience fiberglassing and gel coating so what better way to practice than on something not connected to the boat haha
I think for the vhaul! I still haven't had the time to dig in but I think a 1inch PVC skeleton filled with foam but the main one that stretches from bow to stern should have sand in it. That will be a dead weight running the length of the boat and will stablize it
best way to frame in front half of a 16ft aluminum v hull , want a slightly higher but flat sub floor , and battery and anchor box in the very front, could probably stack them in the first 2 feet of the front
Man you guys are the absolute best when it comes to doin the tiny boat builds. I absolutely love how you guys show love to us guys who can’t afford the big nice 20k plus boats. The mods are insane. I was thinking could you guys ever do a plastic sun dolphin american 12’ jon boat to bass boat conversion. I’ve looked all over the web and theres none a available. I would love to see one with insane mods and who better to ask than #tinyboatnation
Reserve bouncy is how much more weight a boat can handle before you use up the available freeboard and the water pours in to the boat. What you mean is flotation. Nice builds.
Ok! My 14’ x 4’ fiberglass boat should rate 4 person , 600 max weight 25 hp max horsepower ?? Not sure what the gross person , equipment, gas total weight should be ???? Do you know ??
Dose the jon boat have to be a flat bottom. I'm looking at a v-hull 12ft that I'm getting a great deal on. To good to pass up with a trolling motor. Can this be converted into a kick ass bass boat? Or does it need to be a flat bottom "square nose" or "front"? If you send me a link or email I can send you pics so you can tell me what you think. Also I'm in south Florida do you know anyone in the TB nation down here that can assist me. In addition I don't know how to weld so how would I go about getting thr frame fabricated and attached? Thanks any and all help would be appreciated. Who ever reads this can comnent and offer assistance also.
v-hull, open bodys like a lake, flat bottoms for creeks and shallows. aluminim(metal) for rivers or rocky areas, and glass, wood, for lakes deep rivers. based on stability and durability. But you cant beat a plastic Sun dolphin in any environment. Id love to see a Sun dolphin 9.4 or pro 120 build with a 25hp outboard. (way heavy motor, not normal use, but i bet it would scream.
Not on RUclips, at least not with that motor combo. Ive spent hours searching for ideas when i had mine. LOL... I plan to get another, maybe I will do it.
Hey man I really love all the builds. I have a sun dolphin 12 ft jon boat. Im curious what I could do with it and what you would advise. Thank you for your time.
@@TinyBoatNation Would you mind posting the link when you have a moment please Michael? That is if it's still there. I looked, but unfortunately couldn't find it.
Does converting one add enough weight to make a 12 foot v hull stable when standing up? I have tried standing on my seat on my 12 foot and man almost fell in lol
What's your opinion on re-framing a fiberglass boat with, not wood or aluminum, but some heavy, plastic-ish, board? I'm not sure what it's made of, but it looks like plastic or vinyl board, but is much heavier than wood. Basically, it would never rot (although I live in an arid climate). Do you think it's a good idea to use, as long as I make sure to use a lot of foam sheeting and noodle tubing? I have an out-board motor, 115hp, so it can handle pushing the weight. I'm more concerned about the floating/sinking factor...and I just want your opinion. I'm not going to sue you for bad info or anything, I promise.
Enjoying your videos. I’m planning a build for targeting carp on the fly. I’m planning on starting with a 1448 alweld LA (flat bottom). I’d love to be able to pole it in the mudflats. Do you think it would track well enough to build a piling platform on the rear? If so, do you think pods will help offset the added weight? Thanks in advance.
I have a 16 foot long 72" wide aluminum deep v-hull. I can't figure out how to cut plywood for the front deck. I have it framed well but can't cut the curve correctly. It also has gunnels on the inside which is hard to match for fit. Any tips on measuring and cutting?
Evan Dickson set the plywood over it and trace the outside of the boat on it from underneath then cut it out. That should give you the shape you need then just remove a little evenly all the way around until it fits in.
so , i live in sweden, trying to find a good plastic ( cause i dont wanna buy a used , rotting wooden boat ) , but dunno what brand of plastic boat to get, that is about 16ft ( 5 meters ) long, and about 6 feet ( 2 meters ) wide , do you know any boat that would be a good convertion that you can suggest ? as i commented on other videos, im not a millionair, i dont got 4000 dollars ( 40 000 SEK ) to put into a boat like that XD
Hey I may have missed it in one of your videos but how do you mount your frame in the boat. Do you glue the wood? Screw through boat? or just plain held in by weight? Thanks
if you have a v-haul bottom and flat bottom with the same specs 48 inches on the bottom with sane weight in it which one do you think would be more stable.
a flat bottom will displace water more evenly, however a semiV will cut through the water better and ride smoother. given how the physics of your question says they both weigh the same then both hulls will displace the same amount of water to float. since the semiV will have to sit lower in the water to displace the same amount of water it will feel more stable in the water. however there is no substitute for hull width for stability. thats why im building a 102" wide hull.
as you know it has been build out of necessity and the determination not to spend 30k on a boat from a dealer. however i have sit on the sidelines for 1.5yrs building this boat and ended up spending 40k building it. yea its completely different than anything that could be bought but i spent a lot of time and extra money to be able to say that. if you like that Taraga and BPS you'll save yourself a lot of pain and suffering.
New boats are very reliable, as far as the basics of power and the hull integrity. 4 stroke OB's or direct injection etecs are as reliable as a car's engine. You might get issues with electrical or corrosion on boat accessories after a few years, rust stains, damaged boat covers, etc all build up over time. You will still go through batteries and regular maintenance gets a little pricey if you can't figure out how to do it yourself. But if you can build little boats like this, I think you could handle it no problem.
I love the arguments against wood. 50-70 year old wooden boats or boats with wood in them still cruising today. Yet frame a jon boat with it and "It'll rot out in 2 years".
I've got a question, I just bought a 1984 12ft starcraft jon boat and the stability feels like it just isn't there for a conversion. I want to build a casting deck and fish without falling over. will it be stable after the conversion?
I just finished a 12' 32" boat and fish chickamauga lake with it. Casting deck and all. Great boat just don't make deck to high at least 2 or 3 inches under the lip and add plenty of foam and distribute weight
great info. an video. Day 1 member and been on all day watching and learning. If you weren't out in Az I'd definitely ask for you to either build it or help build one. lol any So Fl builders around? I'm on FB so drop me a line...thanks again :-)
You might want to mention also that the foam sheets that you show in your videos that are normally used as insulation for vinyl siding is not a coast guard approved floatation foam for boats. in fact what you're using is the equivalent to pool noodles. if you're going to make a recommendation at least make the right one. A-B foam is what should be used.

Dillon Vice are you an attorney? If not, you should probably ask those questions to someone who is. Not a family law attorney, either. Ask an accident attorney if you can sue the manufacturer when something they built malfunctions and causes you injury. Or, just look at a court docket to review whether there are any cases like that scheduled in the court.

14 foot inlet in Sc! 2 people all day. Love tiny boats
I was wondering, by adding foam insulation on the bottom (inside) of the boat would it restrict water flow to the transom where the bilge would be?

What is the boat length for a boat to be labeled a tiny boat ?
on average about how much do these boats weigh
