I’m not sure how I feel about heating up partially cured resin. If there’s any unreacted acrylate monomers left, I imagine volatilising them by heating would be pretty bad for you. Probably best done outside/with appropriate PPE.
yes I always remove my supports before curing, actually I have used my heat gun to remove supports and on some delicate models with super fine points ( some mecano spiders I have ) i still use clippers/flush cutters
As someone who works at a 3d printing lab, we always cure it first just because of ease, I've cleared so many cured supports at this point when you ripped it off I went "wow that guys strong!"
That was satisfying, but I honestly thought you were "VladSickBartender" when I saw the video. Awesome video tho. Reminded me of those soap cutting and crushing asmr videos 😁
If your supports are hard to remove you can wrap the print in a towel and gently twist it both ways until you start to hear the supports snap. The towel gives you grip and protects some of the more delicate parts from the strain.
While I only have an FDM right now, supports are great to reuse. If anyone wargames (OPR or WH40K for example) supports make great rubble, barriers, pipes/conduit, fences/handrails, and rebar. I even have some supports to build on with greenstuff. Yes, you can use other materials, but if you are printing and have the waste, may as well use it.
The heat method is great, unless the parts are thin details (like swords, capes, or wings) that could get floppy, or worse get torn off or have a chunk torn out.
We used a water blaster at the facility I used to manage, made the job easy but even then delicate parts can't be broken and we sand them down to get the perfect finish
Prefer the warm water method because it's also a great indicator for when your IPA needs to be swapped out when you see the resin fog as it hits the water.
in my limited experience resin printing removing the supports before its cured causes pitting which is harder to sand smooth than bumps left from supports, i guess i dont mid the meticulous bits of clipping away the supports but i feel like you get a better looking model that way
I use very hot water. Since there is usually leftover resin particles in the ipa I use to clean the resin the water is an extra rinse so I don't get any sediment leftover during curing.
I can't believe that if I told my past self in the 00's I would be watching a video in a horizontal format about how to peel the excess out of a creation of a machine that prints almost anything, My head would explode.
I’d watch an hour long video of support-peeling, partly because of how satisfying it is and partly so I can feel the justice of revenge after I spent hours yesterday trying to pull off some supports
The supports remind me of the scene in fraggel rock where the one fraggel is eating the support beams for the little builder guys build, idk just a random thought
It's super easy if you let it sit in the alcohol for a few hours between prints. 2 wash cycles. One at first and one before you take it out. I let them dry on cardboard then cure.
I do this. I’ve been selling clear colored resin prints locally just state shaped stuff or bears. I do the wash then put it in a new jar of alcohol then go work my nursing shift. The supports just peel off when I get home.
I find that if I put my prints through a 30 minute cleaning cycle in alcohol in my wash station and then use warm water, supports will pop right off. I think the extra long wash weakens the support contact area.
I tried hot water amd a hair dryer with water washable resign and each time i get something extra warped or just soft enough to smudge the quality. Now i just make the supports small wash the print in cold water, dry, then use a toool if needed to carefully remove supports.
Man. I wish I knew this when I was trying out 3D printing in high school… The amount of cuts on my fingers from trying to manually peel and smooth my stuff..
Hi Jesse What Temperaturen do you recommend? I think as with the hot water (as I did up Till now) its important to dont overexpose the print to not deform anything Certainly gonna try with my heatgun too Merry Christmas

interesting i’ve been using hot water. what heat gun do you recommend?
most heat guns are the same. warm to hot air
Hair dryers?
Be careful using a heat gun, depending on the material you used to print it maybe more heat sensitive and may warp
Blow dry it

I- there’s no mess
Part of working under IPA or Water is making it a lot safer. Also, if your exposure settings are dialed they come right off with warm water.

Depends on the resin. I pre-cure ABS resin before removing supports, they pop off clean with no damage to the print 😅
Mad respect for making 5 3d prints just for 1 short
Yes the heat gun is the way to go when removing supports. Loved the vid.
That's was satisfying. I need a video of you just removing resin supports please. Lol
i have a 3d printer not a resin tjough but with them you just change your settings to tree supports because they branch out so it is easier to get of

Good supports dont require heat. :)
I've always used the hot water trick, but now I want to get a heat gun!!!! Thanks! :)
Just tried the heatgun. And while it does work like a charm i also feel it warps the prints a bit
This guy looks like Dave Coulier and his name is Uncle Jessy. I love it!
Any way to return the support material to resin for efficiency?...

What do you do with the supports? Do you throw them away or reuse them?
You should make like a futuristic city from the supports
Is that the same with regular 3D prints?
This is Vlad in an alternate universe where he has a 3d printer
Wouldnt it also affect the printed part you want? Or is it heated only enough to affect the supports to be removed?
I have a 3D printer, I’ve always ripped them off and they have never broken, still for fragile parts it’s best to use heat
This is going to be very helpful information dor when I get a resin printer
I love learning about random topics that I won't ever use, eh maybe one day I'll have a 3d printer, who knows.
This is really cool though 👍

Youve gotta rinse the resin off anyway so you might as well use water, or whichother solvent.

You’re not supposed to cure it first. That explains so much
