Lol. I was about to switch it off when you put the ball under TJ's foot! Rotating the midline past the lead kneecap has never occurred to me. Old-timers used to call this hitting against a firm lead side. You fellas are opening my eyes.
For a hip sliding, early extender like me, this is pure gold! It clears up so much gunk both mentally and movement-wise! Planting the lead heel closer to the target and internally rotating the lead femur buys me sooooo much time in transition and allows me to rotate my rib cage much better. Thank you!
Love the Elite Golf content. I know this is an older video, but just watched it. Combing this with content with other of your videos I’ve come up with a map of my golf swing based on your principles. Let me know if I’ve missed interpreted these concepts. I know the swing is dynamic, but here are the tidbits I’m using as check points as I buildup my swing this winter: 1. Address - rounded upper a lower back, weight more on the toes. 2. First move on back swing- active move of the chest causing rib sway/ lateral move away from the target. Both the back of the lead shoulder and back of the trail shoulder are unloaded. 3. Spiral the club up. First part of this a active movement with the spiral. The rest of the club moving to the top is momentum as the body is moving into transition (next step). One new sensation for me is at the top of the backswing is experiencing a pull on the outside of the lead foot, which pulls the heal slight towards the target. 4. Transition - lead heel replants with the lead heal slightly closer to the target. This provides a good landing base to support the pelvis bend (active movement of the pelvis away from the ball and slightly towards the target). Lead femor stays internally rotated during the replant. 4. Downswing - begins with rib sway towards the target ( active movement). This loads the back of the lead shoulder and front of the trail shoulder. 5. Through the hit and into the first part of the follow through - active chest rotation, pulling the loaded shoulders through impact and unloading into the finish. Through the hit, the heal of the trail foot rotates away for the target and trail knee does not pass the midline of the body (both passive movements). Thanks again.
Great stuff! The point about not trying to externally rotate lead knee and instead letting it be a product of upper spine is monumental. So many golf coaches teaching active lead knee external rotation to start downswing without getting pressure forward
Hey guys just watching video and near the end you had said the kissing knee thing is no good, so i was wondering most coach tell you to have knees together, hips pushed forward and chest to the sky on follow through. I’m a member with Milo and he told me I needed more left bend, so I followed your tip to do it early and it was immediate success. Excellent forward low point with irons and hit my drives 25-30 yards longer and straight. Golf heaven, for sure. But my 63 year old low back noticed and I started getting numbness in my right foot. I’ll see if using my hip/leg fascial lines (applying this video) will take my swing stress elsewhere. Hopefully this helps. Crazy to play so well and then realize I may have to go back to an old man swing. But at least I know your system works! Keep up the great work!

I think dual hip flexion is the solution! Wow, I didn’t realize I was extending. I’ll do an online swing evaluation in a few weeks to get your input. It looks like Milo and Hovland keep the trail foot down/flat almost to impact and then spin it around. Is this a common feature of dual hip flexion? Thanks again.
Unfortunately, failing to do dual flexion wasn’t the problem. Doing left side bend early in the backswing can simultaneously increase spinal extension so by p4 I was in a classic reverse spine angle position without realize it. I hit the ball great but I was an injury waiting to happen with the reverse or exaggerated spinal extension hidden behind the scene. TPI says reverse spinal angle is bad for anyone so I guess I got injured not just because I’m an older golfer. Not blaming your instruction. I should have known better. But telling a player to left side bend early in the backswing, even with only the thoracic spine, can possibly lead to or promote a reverse spine angle without realizing it. I’m on the mend though and should be better soon.
So needed to see this. Have been afraid of getting forward on the lead foot (cue fear of hip slide) but seeing how planting feet + spiral work together at p5 to get the sacrum back… mind blown! Already seeing changes in my swing today. Thanks guys!
Very clear presentation of your system! I tend to believe that David Weck has the more complete picture of athletic movement than GOATA which allows for use of entire foot they agree on locomotion but disagree on a good many things. Victor Hoveland as you mentioned displays the heal spinning away and that pattern produces really solid strikes but he pulls every shot while most great players let the trail heal rise but I don’t see many spin it away because most of the greats didn’t hit pulls. Interestingly both Schedfler and Hoveland hit pull fades from opposite patterns.
I came accross this method a year ago on a foreign youtube channel and implemented it to my swing. I started flashing my irons within a few days. Then, after a few months absence from golf( winter),I went back to my old ways and could not hit a descent iron if somebody offered me a million bucks. Now after watching you explained your method, I feel confident that I will be flashing my irons very soon!! everything you explained makes perfect sense. thanks

This is exactly what I needed! Because of all the teachings I've incorporated in the past I "bank" all the time. This system chain naturally fixes so many of my other issues but the key takeaway is that none of this is driven by the legs but rather the chest and hip systems, correct?

I've been a big "groundforce guy", should one of the big takeaways be that all of my feels should be more core/spine/pelvis focused? instead of focusing on my feet pressure. e.g. from P4 to P5, a swing thought is "pull the rib cage" down and around and up instead of anything lower body?

However I’m struggling getting a little lower right lumbar pain and I think it has something to do with my shoulders being out of sync with my lower body rotation

Thanks for great videos - Question: trail foot pressure is on the inside heel on the back swing. What is the movement to shift weight from inside rear foot heel to balls of the same foot, where the pressure is more on the outside pinky toe area? I always had difficulties banking the ankle deal.
I have never used force plates while teaching but would your movement pattern produce a lighter reading on them as there is no pushing off the ground? Or would the numbers look similar? 🤔
Internally rotating lead knee as belt buckle pints ahead of lead knee at same time as trail heel spins away from target and you move into the delivery position is huge power source hereto unexplored by me.Awesome.
Might want to explain this by explaining what “ closed chain” motion is. Describing what occurs in terms of entire lower extremity joint movement. Good video
Loving this Channel!! Might I suggest a clarification with background as a physical therapist. Your explanation about the front leg internal rotation is technically correct, but logically a little confusing. When deciding whether something is internally rotating or externally rotation, we are talking about a joint, not a bone. So, we are looking at the joint of the femur into the pelvis. We need to compare the femur motion to the pelvis motion. The point i think is that looking at the femur in space, it looks to be externally rotating. However, the pelvis is turning the same direction in space and MORE than the femur is. So, the net motion at the pelvic femoral joint is internal rotation.

But am trying to wrap my head around your system and customizing a swing based on the swing catalyst system which may take into account the player’s lead/rear foot dominance. Does this system promote a singular pattern of feet pressure in the swing while foregoing feet shearing force? Hope that makes sense. Appreciate your feedback.
We just see pressure shift in the feet as not the best marker. If you understand ribs and pelvis matchups, then the pressure shift tends to take care of itself. Nothing wrong with using the data, though
Another great video. Big fans of you guys and of Milo. Question: I like to think of where I CAN be active in the swing (i.e. where I can tell my brain to apply force/effort). In your system where do you send that signal? Is it actively moving in a way that stretches the spiral line in both directions (back and then through the ball), symmetrically, and the rest of the body is passive? What’s the best way to think of that? I now know not to actively push off of the trail or lead foot, but to let them respond. Hope that makes sense. Thanks! PS I’m a definite “jump off the ground” victim and I will now be stopping that!
Active spiral line stretch early in the backswing, chillll in transition, active spiral line stretch through the strike (relatively mirror images). Hope this helps 🙏
Rolling ankles- Nicklaus method, however he reset his front foot as you demonstrated and had a backward motion often thru ball with driver and long irons. Interesting… Lots of hip issues???
Watching many Pros hit their irons as best that I can tell the right heal seems to move just after the ball is hit and as part of stroke completion. Please comment. Great site!
As an orthopedic surgeon, it is easier to think of the pelvis rotating more externally through contact than is the femur. This results in the left hip is rotating internally in the hip socket.
Yep, and we can definitely talk feels (which are personal to the player) compared to studies that define healthy, reliable movement. Definitely never wanting to argue anyone’s personal feels AND people are more than welcome to move any way they would like to. That’s the beauty of learning within various systems 🙏❤️
Excellent content and explanation. I’m struggling to integrate a honey hole ‘feel’ with some of these new thoughts. Does it make sense to focus more of trail knee & upper leg, then down into trail foot if honey hole is my transition feel?
Hilarious that as a complete beginner I used to have similar foot leg patterns. But after countless lessons and instructions elsewhere, I’m the prime example now of the unhealthy pattern and bad maps 😂
No matter how hard i try to do this my left hip slides towards target. And from down the line, if you drew a line on my head it moves away from the ball. But if you drew line on my butt it appears that the hips work properly where i keep the left hip on the wall. Yet at impact, impact position screams early extension. Ive tried everything cant achieve the proper feels and positions as this.
Your suggesting that a golfer should be in hip flexion at and past impact? In this video at about 18 minutes, TJ is shown going through impact (in slow motion, without a ball, and exaggerated) and it appears that at and just past impact his head is closer to the target than another part of his body, except his lead foot. This is a bit mind blowing for me! So many instructor and systems suggest your hips thrust toward the target with impact. Am I understanding your teaching correctly? I tried it and was pleased with my results. However, I would like you know from you if I'm understanding your teaching correctly. Thanks!
Does your right leg flex (right handed golfer) remain consistent from address to the top of the back swing or does it slight reduce it's flex as compared to the address position? Thanks for your help.
Y’all talk a lot about GOATA movement, when you are in your stance (at address position) before your shot do you instruct your students to be inside ankle bone high? Basically do you recommend your players start out at address position with their Love all your videos by the way. They’re the best RUclips instruction I’ve been able to find and apply directly to my game with positive results. Honesty better than some in person instruction I’ve received. Can’t wait to see what y’all put out next!
GOATA is great for general movement principles in every day life. In general, better to pressure more outside edge (IABH) rather than inside edge. However anything can be overdone 👍🏼
I've drawn Hogan's seqence countless times so my eye has it's bias.( I don't find any modern swings aesthetically appealing.) Sadly, your representings as to the ground, foot, leg matrix to my eye appear cartoonish, pretzely and ungainly. I suppose my arse is sucking wind( golf DOES bring out the whack job in the soul). I think one of my favorite part of your videos is no offense to TJ but he doesn't seem like an athletic freak who is able to do things just because of some god given talent(which im sure he has plenty)! Certain youtube golf coaches show themselves doing what they think is right without realizing they are gifted and 95% of normal golfers who were never to a 3 handicap or better will ever have a chance to do and they end up chasing the dragon because of a few outliers that teacher tends to show to quantitate his desired preferences... anyways long rant good job guys keep it up

Which is so difficult for me to do, you explain the opposite, which is what I do, but you explain how to do it correctly. What do you think about the 3 o'clock motion on the downswing.?.

Not sure they can say “preferred model” in their video more often. They even say other patterns will work. They prefer a pattern with far less club head rotation at impact. Cant argue there, this is basically victor hovlands pattern and Ping has tested him to have the least amount of club head rotation during impact on tour. A pattern worth using imo.

If you can incorporate more drop, or “sink” in the pelvis, that generally helps 👍🏼

I have never used force plates while teaching but would your movement pattern produce a lighter reading on them as there is no pushing off the ground? Or would the numbers look similar? 🤔

Loving this Channel!! Might I suggest a clarification with background as a physical therapist. Your explanation about the front leg internal rotation is technically correct, but logically a little confusing. When deciding whether something is internally rotating or externally rotation, we are talking about a joint, not a bone. So, we are looking at the joint of the femur into the pelvis. We need to compare the femur motion to the pelvis motion. The point i think is that looking at the femur in space, it looks to be externally rotating. However, the pelvis is turning the same direction in space and MORE than the femur is. So, the net motion at the pelvic femoral joint is internal rotation.

But am trying to wrap my head around your system and customizing a swing based on the swing catalyst system which may take into account the player’s lead/rear foot dominance. Does this system promote a singular pattern of feet pressure in the swing while foregoing feet shearing force? Hope that makes sense. Appreciate your feedback.
We just see pressure shift in the feet as not the best marker. If you understand ribs and pelvis matchups, then the pressure shift tends to take care of itself. Nothing wrong with using the data, though
Another great video. Big fans of you guys and of Milo. Question: I like to think of where I CAN be active in the swing (i.e. where I can tell my brain to apply force/effort). In your system where do you send that signal? Is it actively moving in a way that stretches the spiral line in both directions (back and then through the ball), symmetrically, and the rest of the body is passive? What’s the best way to think of that? I now know not to actively push off of the trail or lead foot, but to let them respond. Hope that makes sense. Thanks! PS I’m a definite “jump off the ground” victim and I will now be stopping that!
Active spiral line stretch early in the backswing, chillll in transition, active spiral line stretch through the strike (relatively mirror images). Hope this helps 🙏

Rolling ankles- Nicklaus method, however he reset his front foot as you demonstrated and had a backward motion often thru ball with driver and long irons. Interesting… Lots of hip issues???

As an orthopedic surgeon, it is easier to think of the pelvis rotating more externally through contact than is the femur. This results in the left hip is rotating internally in the hip socket.

Yep, and we can definitely talk feels (which are personal to the player) compared to studies that define healthy, reliable movement. Excellent content and explanation. I’m struggling to integrate a honey hole ‘feel’ with some of these new thoughts. Does it make sense to focus more of trail knee & upper leg, then down into trail foot if honey hole is my transition feel?

Hilarious that as a complete beginner I used to have similar foot leg patterns. But after countless lessons and instructions elsewhere, I’m the prime example now of the unhealthy pattern and bad maps 😂
Often times we are taught out of good natural movement as a “bandaid fix” rather than a permanent one. We’ve all been through it!
No matter how hard i try to do this my left hip slides towards target. And from down the line, if you drew a line on my head it moves away from the ball. But if you drew line on my butt it appears that the hips work properly where i keep the left hip on the wall. Yet at impact, impact position screams early extension. Ive tried everything cant achieve the proper feels and positions as this.
Your suggesting that a golfer should be in hip flexion at and past impact? In this video at about 18 minutes, TJ is shown going through impact (in slow motion, without a ball, and exaggerated) and it appears that at and just past impact his head is closer to the target than another part of his body, except his lead foot. This is a bit mind blowing for me! So many instructor and systems suggest your hips thrust toward the target with impact. Am I understanding your teaching correctly? I tried it and was pleased with my results. However, I would like you know from you if I'm understanding your teaching correctly. Thanks!

GOATA is great for general movement principles in every day life. In general, better to pressure more outside edge (IABH) rather than inside edge. However anything can be overdone 👍🏼

I think one of my favorite part of your videos is no offense to TJ but he doesn't seem like an athletic freak who is able to do things just because of some god given talent(which im sure he has plenty)! I just saw a video where a coach was saying to turn the right foot (right-hander) to a 3-clock position on the downswing. Which is so difficult for me to do, you explain the opposite, which is what I do, but you explain how to do it correctly. What do you think about the 3 o'clock motion on the downswing.?.

Not sure they can say “preferred model” in their video more often. They even say other patterns will work. They prefer a pattern with far less club head rotation at impact. Cant argue there, this is basically victor hovlands pattern and Ping has tested him to have the least amount of club head rotation during impact on tour. A pattern worth using imo.
