    Chassis:
    Nexon was test for EV so it carried over with existing frame.
    Tiago was test for mass market.
    The new platform (used in Punch) would surely be under development when Nexon EV Max came out (it takes time to build, test and get approvals).
    So it is less about they fixed mistake but more like "lets first see if people are buying it".
    I heard this in one of the recent interview from senior Tata person.
    Battery and Range:
    For range, Tiago EV in general consumes 130Wh/Km and with EV understood driving this can be 110Wh/KM. It being 24kWh battery the range would be 184KM and 218KM respectively. (In winters it can further come down to 100Wh/KM (240KM) and we have achieved 85Wh/KM (282KM as well)).
    So with 35kWh battery of Punch the numbers can 150Wh/KM, 125Wh/KM and 100Wh/KM mostly translating to 233KM, 280KM and 350KM.
    Build:
    I have Hexa and I still see the build issue in cars of that cost 😅

    May be they perceive this as pure city car, where puncture shops are easily available. Perhaps that is why they skipped spare wheel.
    In all my 13 years of car driving, I had a puncture only once, and that too when it was parked in my office parking. For an EV, I guess this should be fine.

  • @advitiyan

    Another point about having the charging point where the fuel filler cap would usually go is that when parked, the car now takes up extra room on the side which is not the case when the charger is mounted up front, extra space that can be taken up by two wheelers for people with small garages.

    What I feel 5 lac upfront cost is higher if we compare current battery price from china. In india this approximately 12000 per kilowatt so for 25 kw cost of battery should be approximately 3 lac. Futhermore, their is no engine and other extra assembly and the price of motor I think should be lower than a engine. So this 3 lac extra justify the real cost in India for present scenario. Correct if i am wrong

    I think we used to have the same conversation about whether I should pay ₹2L extra for diesel over petrol and the answer would be if your daily driving is more, you would recover the extra money paid for the diesel engine in the long run. The same applies here. If your daily driving is 50-100 km, you can recover the extra premium of an EV quickly. The only caveat is that EV has the range issue that diesel engines never had. So from an economical POV, EV is suitable if mostly you have a daily driving of 50-100km in the city and occasional road trips to nearby picnic/tourist spots. IMO, EVs make much more sense for cab drivers because they can easily do about 200 km daily in the city, charge the passengers the same amount as other ICE cabs, and recover the invested money quickly. For others, you are investing the extra money more for the experience and less for savings.

    • @motorinc
      @motorinc  7 месяцев назад +3

      Spot on Ameya! But we think the daily use has to be closer to 100 than 50.

      @@motorinc
      That does it, then, doesn't it? If someone drives 30,000km in two years, there is the cost recovered right there - in two years! And after that, it's a steep downward curve on every km travelled - ₹3 per km (worst case scenario, commercial charging, some states/outlets charging more for stations, best case would be ₹2/km) as compared to ₹4.66 per km (best case scenario of 25km/L and assuming oil price at ₹100/L, ₹10,000 in annual maintenance).
      What's crucial is to weigh whether people are willing to take 1 hour breaks every 3 hours to charge the battery for longer trips.
      My dad drives a Tata Punch AMT Creative and he gets 13km/L in city and 22-24km/L on highways. However, he drives less than 8,000km in a year now and EV isn't really a cost effective solution from there. One can make the case for added comfort in even the base Punch EV, but that base model severely limits my father's drive to the hills on weekends.

    Very nuanced, useful conversation. I was interested in this vehicle as soon as i came to know about it. I would rate it the best in India right now for the city car role. Automatic, powerful, safe, high seating, narrow footprint, robust and absorbent suspension, the suspension is specifically made to be 'gunned' on the worst of roads. Add to that the electric vehicle benefits, instant power and torque, and the super low running cost, and you have a winner, which is unbeatable right now. It's a mini-tank, which is fast and exciting to drive too, with almost nil running cost!

      @@motorinc Despite Cancelling the booking I still don't have a confirmation on when I would get the refund. I feel they are still trying to convince me.
      The questions I had was -
      1. Would be practical to have it as the first and only car?
      2. How would the service be?
      I'm only gonna use the car outside the city and would probably ride 50k kms in 8-10 years. Mileage is not an issue at all, But range is.
      The service issue on the other hand is that, if I had a petrol car and the service centre people are irresponsible, I can go to any mechanic and get it fixed in a petrol vehicle. I can't go to anyone for an EV. I have to rely on Tata. That reliability is not something they have earned today. Also software issues scare me more. The bad service experience comes from my brother's Tigor EV. If anyone from tata reads this and thinks they can improve his experience, reach out to me and I'll connect you with him. Had charge stations brick the vehicle. Tata does send RSA? But it takes time. If this happens in any remote areas, at odd time, though the chances are very narrow, you'll feel the stress.
      They really need to have better people in dealerships.
      (This all night just be my pessimism for anyone reading. But if I'm spending 15 lacs on a car, I'm not supposed to in fear and anxiety. Just not my cup of tea. I put my peace of mind over anything else)

    I am one of those guys who listens to this podcast on Spotify while doing other stuff. Like on last Sunday, I was cleaning and polishing my motorcycle which got a bit dirty. I put on two podcasts from motorinc first back to back, and started doing my thing. By the time I was done it was already two hours up, my motorcycle was all cleaned polished and lubed and looked like this thing just rolled out of a showroom, yet during this entire process I was neither tired nor bored like everything I did was on autopilot mode. So as far as any improvements are considered, in my pov this podcasts lies strictly within "it ain't broken don't fix it region." So please keep up the good work, because looks like my vehicle's maintenance routine somewhat depends on it.😜

    In one of your previous videos I had mentioned how on Oct 6th 2023, I had given my Harrier XZ (the OG first gen) to the Lakshmi Tata OMR (chennai) to repair a rat bite. When you mentioned "service" I had to give you an update. Short version spoiler. I still don't have my car back. Long version, after pongal holidays they did give me the car and you know how after a heart surgery a human just looks 5 years older and other organs are affected, my car feels 10 year old even though it's 4.5 year old. They changed couple of wiring harness and airbag module and somehow managed to add these issues:
    1. Steerling alignment is off by 10-15 degrees (yes they delivered it like this). I don't know how the delivery driver drove it like that to my office.
    2. Battery drains overnight
    3. Airbag indication still persists intermittently
    4. AC works but can't change temperature and many other software errors and issues in drive mode, traction control, hill hold, etc.
    On top of that, they lost my original RC which was in dashboard storage (I know, stupid of me to keep the OG RC there). Somehow they've also my battery cover but the bolts are there in the glove compartment. At this point, I guess any customer would go to consumer court but with everything going on in my life I just don't have the time and energy to go through that so I got the regional customer care head involved who put me in touch with the GM of this dealership who is supposed to solve all issues.
    I know you can't do it but if you could, I would want you to ask the TATA leadership "should I buy a TATA EV?". Because their engineers aren't trained to handle the electrical components of lesser sophisticated cars that they have. I mean why spend so much on R&D to build a chasis that's comparable to RR Phantom when in one repair their service engineers can turn a fully functioning car with couple of wiring issuees into a completely non drivable car?
    As I am writing this comment, I am wating for the GM who is on my case to give me an update with another excuse of why he can't deliver today because I am supposed to get it today.

    I dont get the logic. Price delta for ice to ev delta is 5lakh which doesn’t seem fair but 16lakh top model makes sense because it has more. But then price delta increases to 10lakh. Basically you can buy 2 ice models. And considering evs have 5% tax compared to 29% on ice the price delta increases to 6lakhs for base models.

    • @ub678
      @ub678 7 месяцев назад +1

      Comparison was manual base ICE vs starting EV range. With all the bells and whistles in the EV, a delta of 2-3 lakhs makes sense.

    • @outlawfromeast
      @outlawfromeast 7 месяцев назад

      Automatic punch ice top model is priced at ~12 lakh. Still leaves a 4lakh delta. On top of that there are govt subsidies on manufacturing and importing ev technology. Even if we consider the ev cost i.e. price before tax to have a 2lakh delta after taxes ex showroom prices should have ~1lakh or less delta

    • @outlawfromeast
      @outlawfromeast 7 месяцев назад

      6lakh ex showroom translates to 4.65 lakh + 29% tax
      So if we consider ev price to be 2lakh more i.e. 6.65 lakh its ex showroom comes to 6.65l +5% which is about 7lakh
      Govt is providing subsidy to make evs more affordable so that it is more lucrative option but these companies have turned it into money grabbing game.

    • @motorinc
      @motorinc  7 месяцев назад +1

      There is also taxes. The EVs on-road cost doesn’t increase all that much compared to ICE.

    • @outlawfromeast
      @outlawfromeast 7 месяцев назад

      @@motorinc agreed. The registration charges are quite low compared to ice cars. But not enough to offset the huge sale price delta.
      Punch ev has a registration charge of 12k compared to 50k on ice. That only shortens a 4-5lakh delta by 40k.
      Ps: i got the numbers from the internet so feel free to correct me if i am wrong 😊

    Thank you for yet another detailed review! I have a question: If I'm considering the top model of Punch EV, its around 16L, and yes it feels like a more well-rounded package. But then I think about the XUV 400 EL Pro which is about 2.5 lacs more and that one feels a lot more premium, more spacious, and I loved the audio on XUV a lot better than the one on Punch top (may be the unit I TD had an issue, but it felt lower quality than the one on my 2022 Tigor EV). And given the issues of not tuning the drive modes properly on XUV - I am not able to decide if it's better to save those 2.5 lacs and go with the Punch, whose driving experiece will be good, at the risk of repeating of the many service issues that I have seen with my Tigor EV), along with the possible niggles with the tech or actually spend the 2.5 lacs and get a more premium experience with more power which i will need to manage manually rather than relying on the car to handle it and a little bit more range on the 40KWH battery pack but at the cost of missing some features, and also I'm not sure how Mahindra service is, especially for EVs? So not sure if the additional 2.5 lacs is justified Please help!!!

    Test drove this a couple days ago for my sister's daily commuting vehicle.
    My biggest problem with the car is the lack of physical buttons. Almost everything is touch now. It's terrible. When I pointed it out, the guy said, "Sir, everything is voice controlled now, here's how." His voice command failed 4/4 times. It was embarrassing tbh.
    I had this weird conversation at the very beginning of the test-the guy was explaining variants and that there's a long range variant and there's a medium range. I was surprised and quickly said "wow 3 battery sizes!" It was awkward as he explained the smaller battery is called the medium. Well done TATA.

    I think there's a logical thinking behind why Tata decided not to include spare wheel as standard.
    Most people are going to drive an EV in cities only, where puncture is rare if you keep your tyre in good shape. And even if you got one you can repair it with puncture kit or simply use a tyre inflator and drive it to nearest shop easily. And even if you got a puncture beyond repair you can still call a mechanic in cities easily.
    But you have to have a spare one when going for a tour outside city.

    The frunk could have been practical if the bonnet had
    1. gas struts
    2. A more solid and more spacious area than the mere 5-6kg plastic shell it comes with
    One thing I missed, are both versions of the punch powered by the same motor as the nexon? So in theory you should be able (hack basically) to downgrade / upgrade power from 80-140ish hp? So if you tune down the power to 80 in city mode could in theory squeeze out more range in the LR?
    I think Punch is a 'right size' for metros, especially it your primary usage is 2 adults /2 kids or 4 Adults. Similar features as nexon, a more mature ride and handling package, lower range of course but also lower price point. I think it can make a case for itself in the EV world.
    Now coming to Nexon.EV, with all the benefits that the platform brings, shouldn't Tata have moved Nexon to Acti.ev platform first instead of a mere facelift? Especially when you consider Nexon is the flag bearer, that basically made EVs mainstream in India, not just for Tata but as industry itself? Why the step motherly treatment? Are they playing safe by testing it first on the Punch instead of an established product?
    When buying an EV, along with the facts that you mentioned about investing the savings upfront, EV also technically have lower maintenance costs. So its savings on fuel costs and maintenance that need to be considered. But the counterpoint is, clearly just my opinion, the EV will depreciate faster in terms of value than ICE vehicles i think. Its easier to judge a used ICE vehicle in terms of condition than an EV. Also if an ICE version performance dulls down, in terms of engine, parts to improve it would be cheaper than replacing the battery pack (i assume motor performance wont go down significantly compared to battery efficiency) which could cost 40% of the value of the vehicle.
    I have only driven the EV Max and that too once and I loved it. But I would rather enjoy the dinosaur jiuce as long as it lasts. 😬

    Actually Battery density and power frigures have gone up significantly over the years, so much so, that we are seeing a massive shift from NMC and other Nickel based cells to LFP based cell worldwide, which are supposed to be less power/energy dense. And yet, these new breed of LFP cells and the new battery pack architecture with a combination of electricals/electronics and software is delivering similar range/performance as the nickel based battery cells. 2023 was the first year when total LFP battery cells usage crossed the 50% mark, and it's only gonna go up. The plus is, LFP cells have 2-3 times longer life, are much less fire prone, not explosive, the only downside is they lose more range in subzero/near zero climate, but are better in withstanding heated conditions, so really a plus in all front in Indian driving condition.

    Watched the entire review thinking about just 1 thing. Who is the Nexon.EV MR for?
    Comparing it with the Punch.EV LR
    Punch seats the same number of people (albeit in less comfort for the rear passengers)
    Has a slightly bigger boot
    Has almost the same performance numbers (Power, Torque and 0-100)
    Has a bigger battery and hence quite a bit more range
    Is better in the city (smaller footprint)
    Is more usable on highways due to the higher range
    Costs about 3 lakh less while offering a lot more features starting from the base LR variant that Nexon.EV MR doesn't get.
    Punch.EV LR in the base Adventure persona out-equips most 11-12 lakh sub-4 meter sedans for about 2 Lakh more. 2 Lakh Rupees buy about 1900 liters of petrol and about 25-30k km of running. After you have run those 30k km, this one will run at less than the amount it costs those sedans to service. 30k km is not a big number. Does anything else even make sense anymore?

    Punch doesn't take 50kw DC fast charging. It's a sleazy marketing trick tata does "10 to 80% in 56 minutes on a 50kw dc fast charger".
    When you do the math, it means 75% in an hour. that's as slow charging rate as gen 1 tata cars. In punch's case it's only 26.5kW.
    Tata tricks by saying "on a 50kw charger". It doesn't mean it takes 50kw, it means on a common 50kw charger you find, punch LR takes 26.5kW.

    "MEREKO KATO PIAA" (Come bite me, love.)
    Thats what I heard whenever you said that track name. And yes I've never been more confused. I thought you guys gave it a nick name because it was so bad and going there is as bad as getting bit by something.

    Saw the TATA TVC after watching your review. I think TATA knows its youthful audience - they travel light - just sunglasses, baseball cap, phone and a spray can - which is what the Punch Frunk was designed for. Those without an Instagram account can buy a Tata ACE. And those weaned on un-hip-hop music can buy an EV 2-wheeler.

    From my experience owning 2 tata cars, the mechanical parts are good, like body/suspension. But the electronic components, especially sensors used are of low quality. My Altroz has gone into limp mode 3 times while during normal driving due to fault in Air flow sensor. I used a BLE OBD to check the error code. I went to Tata ASS and as usual they were 'not able to find any issues' and just cleared error codes whithout solving anything. The issue occurred 2 more times after that. Just imagine When you are driving 60 or 80 km/hr and car suddenly goes into limp mode without any response. It is a dangerous situation that can cause accidents. But hey..that's how one get to use those 5 stars.

    I have 2018 Nexon xx+. I always had AC issues. Going to Goa or Banglore from pune the AC stops working after 5-6 hours of driving. Neither Tata nor the service centers want to acknowledge the issue. This is the only fact I am leaving Tata and m&m from choice for the next car

    While sad but true.. I wanna work and be at a level where i can afford to have an ICE Car or Bike with me and fill it up with petrol for my joyrides 50 years into the future.
    Sure commuting will change.
    I mean our family is already looking at EVs as a means to travel/commute everyday. The boring stuff.
    But i dont wanna lose the Yamahas and the Swifts which i use for joyrides on a sunday!

    We ended up buying Punch ICE in 2022 instead of Nexon because of the sloped roof at the back, my Dad felt a bit claustrophobic. He felt more roomy on the Punch because of th headroom in the back. So I will have to disagree that the Nexon is roomier. Test drive is a must.
