You actually have to give a lot of credit to John Saxon here for selling the role. Saxon trained with Bruce Lee and was one of his students, so I know that helped. But unlike a lot of fights where the aging actor has no clue, John Saxon made it somewhat believable. He had good movement and had surprisingly quick hands with his jab. However, Bruce Lee said that Steve McQueen was his best student out of all the actors he would train. That Steve had grit and that "son of a gun's got the toughness in him," according to Bruce.

He moved away from the combinations of punches and wide strikes that would move him in closer to Bolo and as a result make him vulnerable to counter moves and grapples. At 3:15 you see him switching over to jabs that allow him to strike quickly at medium range and keep enough distance from Bolo that he would have the time to react and defend against any attacks Bolo threw back at him. Just a single jab at a time and keeping his distance to wear Bolo down until the time was right to go in and take Bolo down with a hit combination.
