  • Coral reefs are some of the most biodiverse and economically valuable ecosystems on the planet. They sustain about one quarter of all marine life, including thousands of fish species. They are also home to invertebrates, marine mammals, sea turtles, and algae. Corals are not rocks or plants-they are actually animals. They live together in large colonies, creating coral reefs by attaching themselves to rocks and reproducing via cloning.
Coral reefs are very important to the environment and to communities. They prevent flooding, lower the risk of tsunamis, and reduce erosion. They also provide sources of food and medicine and attract tourism. They keep water clean and clear as they consume particles that create murkiness. Coral reefs also help mitigate climate change, as the algae that live in reefs-and the coral themselves-remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Tropical coral reefs thrive in warmer temperatures, including on the coast of East Africa. Unfortunately, many coral species are endangered and may soon go extinct. The decline of some coral reef-dwelling fish species is an issue for people in Africa who rely on it for food and income. Without coral, fish will continue to decline.
Fisherman and coral expert Katana Ngala Hinzano, with Oceans Alive and supported by IFAW, works to protect and restore coral off the coast of Kenya. Protecting coral reefs benefits animals, people, and the planet.
