  • Is it possible to break a Guitar Truss Rod by hand? Here is a slightly different video about a Guitar and Bass guitar myths that scares a lot of musicians out there.
I did a lot of research about this interesting question and at the end I tried to figure it out myself by exploring the "Fear of a breaking Truss rod". In this Video I will explain the working principle of a one way Guitar Truss Rod, make some experiments and at the end of the video I will try to break one by overtightening the nut. I love doing stuff like that - if you are interested in more of my Luthier life Projects, please feel free to check out my other extended Workshop Videos on this channel.
    Enjoy watching and sharing.
    Best Regards Nik

Very interesting Nik. As you were upping the torque, all that went though my head was that the threads would strip, rather than the truss rod shear, due to the lack of thickness of the adjusting threads. Thanks for having the bottle to be the one to try the experiment Nik. Kindest regards, and happy Luthiering. Cheers, Dave 😊 🎸🎶

Thank you so much for your positive Feedback Dave. This was quit interesting for me to...but if you wanna break a 6mm Steel Trussrod you really have to apply a lot of torque on it... Best Regards Nik

I've broken one truss rod in my life, and I am sure there were many factors. It was old, a fairly cheap import, probably damaged by cross threading, etc., etc., It's not even worth worrying about with most guitars IMO. Stripped nuts, I see those galore. I think using the wrong alen key is the real issue with hobbyists like myself doing their own work!

Would be interesting to see how a guitar with an aluminium or carbon fibre neck would react to using a whammy bar.

I think people are not so much afraid of literally breaking the rod, but they are afraid that it will stop working. And to do this, it’s enough to strip off the thread or strip the head of the screw and you don't need much force to do so It is enough to not insert the key all the way or use the wrong size key

Thanks a lot for your Feedback. Yes you are absolutely correct. Using the wrong key is also a very common issue that cause a male function of the Nut. Best Regards Nik

@@petrekguitars I ripped off a part of the trussrod. It's shorter now. And doesn't have a nut anymore.
I plan on bringing it to you sometime 😉
