I use Bitterroot truss rods. Love them. Fender later added the glued wood bushing at the nut side of the neck. The nut pushes outward against the bushing creating the second direction of neck travel so the neck is bidirectional.

I've been using the Bitterroot rods ever since you first turned us on to them. I like the one with only the rod covered because the nut end isn't as large. So less material removed to fit rod. Plus I like to use a bull nose cutter so the bottom of the channel is round. I figure why have the square corner rout gap. That's known as SCRGS in luthier circles.

These rods are quality. Recently got a 5 pack of the type with the heat shrink on the active rod only, and am very pleased with them. They're every bit as good, lower profile, and a fraction of the price of the rods I was previously buying from Stewmac.
I just bought my first thing from Bitterroot! I had to find a bone nut to replace the one on the guitar on my avatar. Seems they're the only folks that had one big enough to fit. Mine is like 1mm wider in 1 dimension than what everyone else carries and Bitterroot had it!
It was only like $7 and so I left them a message on my order saying "I had heard of them from Matt & Chris @ Texas Toast and thanks for the new bone nut because I couldn't find the specific size I needed anywhere else except Bitterroot!"

It seems like an additional advantage of the fully heat shrinked rod with full sleeve over the nut is that you don't have to be concerned about getting glue in the slot. You can go wild on the glue! I have three truss rods in stock that I don't want to use now after seeing these Bitterroot rods.

I can't say enough nice things about Bitterroot. I had a question and got a quick email response. I eventually called and did not end up talking to somebody in India. Unheard of! I talked to the main man in charge. Bless his heart, I talked his ear off.

I like this truss rod design. Is there anything like silicone caulking needed to absorb vibrations? Do these just get covered by the fingerboard, or is any glue used in the channel?
I'm not fan of that dual truss rod with the rotating nut. I had to replace original truss rod in my 8string guitar, where was originaly that inner nut type, but was kinda round for the allen wrench. I replaced it, it was my first time, so lots of mistakes, but that is different story...:D Anyway after I put everything together and put new strings and was making setup. At the end of the setup when I was making final adjustments of the truss rod the screw or whatever it is called behind the nut broke...:D So I bought that with the inner nut and I hope it will last longer...:D I installed some carbon reinforcements so we shall see.:)

Great video Matt!! You gave a Master Class on 2 way truss rods vs Dual Action truss rods. When John Suhr was on Tone Talk he talked about the early days when he was having his necks made for him. He said the supplier switched from vintage, curved channel truss rods to the modern 2 way without telling him. When he got the necks with the new style rod he said they sounded dead and he switched back immediately. What are your thoughts on that?
With all due respect to Mr. Suhr, I think that if you aren't' making your own necks you aren't a real guitar maker

Watching the open example pieces where you just slide the truss rod in and out makes me wonder how do get the truss rod to stay in place once in the guitar? I know tension from a truss rod adjustment would probably hold but when you adjust to zero seems like that truss rod would just slide back and forth.

Would love to see how much torque it takes to break double trussrod hex part off. Would need to sacrifice one trussrod tho.
He has a video where he tries to break a truss rod and can't do it.
I did make that video
I use one of the short Bitterroot truss rods with the exposed bar stock to do strings-on fret leveling with 400 grit sandpaper attached. Picked up that technique from Sam Deeks here on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/MDRfd3MCBIo/видео.html
Does the fully wrapped rod still work if you somehow got glue in the truss rod channel when glueing the fretboard?

Gibson rods do not have to be curved, but rather straight with a taper. Shim up the nut area ≈ 1/8”, cut channel, and you have a channel that’s progressively shallower as you near the nut. This is the way they were made in the “golden age,” and how many ‘59 Les Pauls have useless truss rods?
The idea of a truss rod is to counteract the effects of the strings, and the strings are straight, but they have no problem flexing the neck.
I know this is the tribal lore of the Les Paul forums.
I have built both and you will not be able to convince me that the vintage style single acting rod does not need to be in a curved channel.
Fortunately the world is big enough for both of us and we can agree to disagree
@@TexasToastGuitars I’ve yet to build a LP where my straight/tapered channel didn’t pull a neck straight after string tension. But yeah you can build yours however you like
