We Hack Into The Cheapest Amazon Neck To Inspect The Truss Rod

- Adjusting the truss rod on a guitars neck is an often-misunderstood procedure. Not all guitar necks are created equal but Guitar players, new and old, are concerned that they are going to break something. We have abused this Amazon guitar neck to see if we could break the truss rod and now it is time to cut out the rod with great vengeance and furious anger.
For everyone who is still hunkered down in the house or just looking for a little bit of infotainment we are doing a lot of extended videos so you can zone out a little bit.

Here at Texas Toast Guitars we understand that the world is a mixed-up place right now… Even more than usual! We joke around a lot about “Safety Third” but the fact is that maybe laying low isn’t the worst idea? Of course, that is easy for us, we spend a lot more time with the beloved pin router than we do people.

@The Emperor one day i went to the front of my Porsche, opened the hood to check the oil and ... there was no engine . Amazing European enginuity, eh ?
@@carmineredd1198nice statement but it isn’t relevant here. Maybe you are the one missing the engine , eh?
This has the making of a great new series.....I like the demonstration of the movement. Thank you. I learned something and that's what counts.
Thanks for this one. I have always wondered how those things work. It's kind of like the day I watched that 20 minute video of a guy cutting open a "Magic 8 Ball" because I had to know what's in there.
That was a good homily, short sweet to the point ! thanks Matt Chris
That was indeed fun Matt! Always interesting to see what's inside!
@Keith Clarkthank you man. Matt reply’s a lot of times. I actually thought he did on this one. I watch a lot of guitar related content just love to see what people are up to.
I bought one of those necks for my dad three years ago. It was a cheap Chinese made bastard exactly like the one that you showed in this video. Only I painted it surf green to match the body that I built a guitar for him. It didn't sound stellar but it works and the trussrod in it worked too. I bought stuff from China until the Corona Virus came along and now I don't buy anything from them. Either way it works my dad is happy and so am I. I said to myself when I first saw the beginning of this video to remove the fretboard which is exactly what you did. I see that you know what you're doing. Thank you for sharing this with us. Carry on!!
Thanks for watching my friend
That really was a very informative video. Thanks guys.
Glad you enjoyed it Robert
Finally a video show how the trust rod works when you tighten not loosen it great thanks man appreciate the videos you guys make
Our pleasure!
That was fun. Low key. Informative. And 7 minutes 54 seconds well spent.
Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend
Great video as usual. TYVM. How about a dissertation on single action vs two-way vs PRS two way truss rods professor Matt?
Coming soon!
Thanks for sharing. Do you have any video of a comparison between a twisted neck and a not twisted one? From the video, I can not detect the twist. Thanks in advance.
The neck looks a lot like the one that came with a okoume Tele kit I assembled recently. Mine was quite good, no warping and good fret work although the plastic nut was awful (I replaced it).
Great video!
Very informative.i enjoyed the video.
Great! I just bought 2 truss rods from A. and I was wondering if I made a mistake. Do you take the plastic off before installing? I know you would on a 1 way truss rod, if there was plastic on it. You have answered this issue for a lot of us! Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz
I do not take off the plastic
This type of vid is so helpful
All us Paul Harrell fans would love to hear your tedious truss rod lecture, the tedious bits are the best part. :)
That's some brutal work right there! All in the interest of science.
That was great. Very surprised to see a decent truss rod buried in there.
I've ordered quite a few Chinese cheap as chips necks. They're very useful for practicing fret leveling, reshaping, refretting and any operations you would not want to practice on more expensive necks, and a few of them are ok for a home budget build.
How about a video on how you determine the wood isn't good on the neck? How do you inspect for twists, bends etc. Is it just visual, do you use measurement tools etc.?
That was cool homie.
I had previously posted a snarky remark about the mating glue bottles in the background but I thought "that's so jr. high" and deleted it ...
I, for one, don't find truss rod videos boring, I've always wondered why and how they work and wouldn't mind a "deep dive"...
Slightly OT: I have two necks from Goodwill salvaged guitars and the fingerboards look like nice rosewood (but what do I know) and would like to salvage those for future builds. What would be the best way to remove (intact) the fretboards? Use a heat gun to loosen the glue or bandsaw? (Of course I'd be pulling out the frets also)...
Thank you. Informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it Patrick
Very cool video. I'm actually surprised that the access hole to adjust the truss rod looks so traditional, and yet they could use the modern style flat truss rod.
Cool vid. I've ordered a few necks from China. The wood is really cheap, could be maple, but maybe not, really lightweight and has a plastic feel to it. Neck pocket tenons are way out of tolerance, usually too small. Tuner holes were fine, but metric spec. Surprisingly, the fret work was pretty decent. Some fret sprout, but not in need of leveling.
Thanks for doing this guys, interesting.
Another round of delicate luthiery.
You know it
Nicely done.
Thanks brougham
@@TexasToastGuitars My pleasure, brochacho! 😁👍
Thanks Matt! I’ve always wanted to see just that. I would like/ watch your 20 minute, low point of a guitar build class video on truss rods.
I know this is probably a dumb question, I’ve seen you put a piece of blue tape over the truss rod before you apply the glue to glue on the fretboard, do you remove the tape before you attach the fretboard?
I would assume you do, but then I wondered if the glue got on the truss rod would it impede it’s performance.
Again, I always learn and am entertained by your posts.
Thanks,
Steve
Thanks Steve, but that truss rod lecture could go long :)
We do remove the tape
@@TexasToastGuitars I think I would listen to it to be very honest. About three years ago I thought truss rods were some sort of magical voodoo. Now I adjust them unabashed! You need to do a video on it I guarantee you I would watch it start to finish and I would stand and applaud you at its’ conclusion!
I get my truss rods at Bitterroot too! Perhaps you can call those guys and have them give you a (remote) shop tour? It's possible they are resellers though, which is fine as I can buy a dozen at a time instead of a thousand piece minimum order.
Those are great truss rods and like the ones I use myself, fender use the most hopeless rods just a single rod which shear the threads off the end. I’m sick of repairing them. I’m unsure if they have changed them but the older ones are crap.
Right on
I've been working at guitar teching for live bands over the past 20 years.and I can tell you with 100% accuracy that ever since smartphones were invented and it was easier than sitting down in front of a PC and I could just have my phone on my lap and my guitar and amp and my other hand and amp sitting on the table in the front of me? My playing after 30 years has jumped leaps and bounds as far as quality wise and preciseness and having a better ear for Melody.I think this reins surgeons with all the guitar kids learning to play these days cuz they're cooped up has also reignited that fire I had under my ass when I was 15 and I'm pushing 50."everything music and guitar shenanigans official channel"I leave everything up that I play the drunk stuff the good stuff the sloppy stuff the great stuff the absolutely mind-blowing to me sometimes stuff I can't believe I even pulled off but I definitely suggest giving it a check out and sort the videos from oldest to newest and watch them get better and better.
Thanks man, I'll check it out
I just stumbled over your vid today; nicely presented. I'd never even considered it before, but now I have to ask: would you recommend these necks as what, decent? reasonable acceptable? good bang for buck? solid all-round value? I'd appreciate your feedback...
I would say that these necks should be avoided and are unacceptable at any price.
Does Texas Toast have a Web Site? I want some details on the Soul Bass. How much is one for instance? What are my options and how much fun can I have with it. Please do a RUclips video on the soul bass.
www.texastoastguitars.com
Greetings from Fort Lupton, fellas. Pretty cool what y'all did there. It's nice to see a truss rod in action on both sides. And you can still reuse the neck!😂😂😂
Thanks Brian but we will use the neck for our truss rod lecture
Damn... I really like this Chanel!
Thank you Sean
Unfortunately I’ve had to buy some of these necks because of the price for an American made neck but the main problem with them are usually at the headstock because they don’t adjust from the forth fret to the nut but every once in a while (great while) you actually get a good neck and if anyone’s interested in getting one that isn’t the cheapest thing you can get but good for a good price Edenguitars has some really good stuff anyway good luck out there and thanks for the great video dude
Thanks Lee
I for one would love a truss rod video.....
Would it come apart if your steamed it with like a cloths iron heat brakes glues seal or would it be a major pain that way idk you channel looks awesome I’m subscribing
The fret board certainly could have been removed more cleanly, however there was never any intention of using this neck since it was a knock-off, had a big twist and was 39 dollars. I really just wanted to see the truss rod. Speed was what was required... not finesse
Time for the truss rod deep dive
Cool experiment. I say do more stuff like this if possible
It was pretty fun
I think not many know about the workings of a 'truss rod'................I took your advice and 'built it myself (Jazzmaster)'.......works/sounds great !
That is awesome my friend
Low point of the day? That's it, I want to hear the lecture now.
I'm an amateur DIY guitar guy (mostly partscasters), and learn as I go. I suppose a decent truss can help make a cheap guitar more playable at least for a while, but then...? Good demo and my kind of channel.
Thanks for watching Fred
Oh we are in trouble now
Maybe but I don't think it's because of a guitar neck
I guess the fact it cracked the neck is a sign the truss rod is up to the job. That was good to see it in there. Do you think it was deliberately glued in or splooge from the fretboard getting in there?
I think it was installed properly
watched ... enjoyed
Thanks for the visit Sam
I have gotten some inexpensive necks from eBay that were amazingly good!
wow, if the neck was made with some better (stronger) wood, it would be a nice neck!! They got the truss rod right just used the wrong damn wood! Lol... As always great video guys, thanks!! 🎸🎸👍
If i was going to build a Tele neck from scratch how would i know what would be a good piece of hardrock maple???
Like say im at Lowes and im looking at top notch maple, ok...
So what do i look at?
How would i actually pick the strongest most solid piece of maple??
Cheers!! Have great day!
Vern 👋
Hi Vernon, I would not buy from Lowes, give Dan at Guitar Wood Experts a call
@@TexasToastGuitars Thanks i will check that out..
I bought one of the cheap Amazon telecaster necks and the mahogany truss rod stripe (aka. skunk stripe) was painted on 🤣 Interesting to see the truss rod itself is functional in this test.
Interesting show Matt. Say hi to Chris and Mrs. Toast.
Will do brotherman
I’ll listen to your truss rod lecture
Why not removed fretboard by heating/steaming and save neck and fretboard?
Takes too long
Ill take a seat in the truss rod lecture, rather be better informed then missing something!
We will probably do it soon
I just bought a cheap Telecaster neck online. The neck heel was so much deeper than it should have been I couldn't use it
One of the most ubiquitous Chinese manufacturers, Kmise, consistently make their neck heels about 3mm too high. I've written to their customer support and described in detail why that is a bad idea, suggesting they should adapt to Fender standard neck heel height etc. Not sure if it will help.
Sand it down, It's part of the fun!
I like when guys show how bad they are at doing something and proudly show that on youtube
Your sister
@@TexasToastGuitars My SISTER would have removed the fretboard with a hot iron and sharp knives. You have all the credibility of one of those house flipping shows where they break the walls out with hammers.
@@robertowen1956 enjoy your Cheetos
why would you remove the fret board from a warped and unusable neck with a hot knife? Would you want to reuse a cheap fretboard on something good? do you enjoy the slow trip around the barn? Is your time worth nothing?
I like when hacks fail at talking shit. Good job corky
I like this fun stuff!!
Thanks Dan
film your truss rod lecture , I'll bring the coffee and I'll stay awake -- I'd really like to hear what you say
You got it man
What kind of wood is that neck?
Some craptastic maple
I wasn't to cheap it was almost tougher than him 😂😂
I am quite surprised that it had at least a decent truss rod in it.
Different does not make it worse. It looks ok. I have bought a few Amazon necks and they work just fine. At 30 dollars they work well for your own builds builds. I had one that twisted but it was my fault. It was in a hot then cold then hot car for over a year. I forgot it was there lol.
More necks for you
I don't remember the trussrod lecture. It must not have been to bad
Or too long
you couldn't unglue the fretboard?
I did unglue the fretboard... with the bandsaw
Warmoth modern side adjust trus rods blow! I have had two that twist when tightened. Should have went with your daily driver kit.
The Warmoth side adjust only move the rod a tiny bit
@@TexasToastGuitars also only moves from the 2nd fret to 8th fret. Total garbage
Its go to know the ShartCaster will have a somewhat decent truss rod. The body is great, but the neck, I think, came from a Chinese Amazon kit. I cant remember to be honest. My son will have fun banging it around anyhow lol
YA TOAST!
Oh damn, I cut the wrong neck! 😱🎸
I was 1/2 expecting there not to be a truss rod when you cut it open. Maybe just a hole to make it look like it had one.
Me too
Ok, Mr. Luthier! Why didn't you remove the fretboard and then remove the truss rod?
I did exactly that
You should have pulled the frets and used your trusty pin router to just plane off the fretboard. ;-)
Next time!
When I start building i'll be making my own truss rods I think, and using carbon fiber reinforcement too
More power to you Curtis
Glad to know that the companies Amazon is dealing with are at least installing a decent truss rod is those craptastic necks !!! LOL
Amazon doesn't deal with lots of sellers, amazon is just offering their platform to sellers, they have no clue what kind of shit they're selling. Tons of scammers on amazon, especially in electronics.
the low point of the day ... uhhh ... "I've got friends in low places" ...
HAHAHA
Recommended for "low point of the day."
Lecture! Lecture!
Maybe some day
"It's definitely the low point of the day" and you said it with fish-eating grin.... LOL!!!
I honestly believe most of the typical suppliers are resellers of Chinese guitar parts and likewise a lot of North American guitar companies bolt on a lot of Chinese parts. I see too many similarities in a lot of the better castings and designs on places like Amazon.
I think you are right my friend
I find building guitars interferes with my drinking.
(In my best fake German accent.) Very interesting!
Wow
am i the only nerd that would enjoy a 45 minute lecture about truss rods?
I would dig it the most
If you would have baked the neck would the glue have come loose on the fretboard? Curious what would happen.
You can steam them off but it takes a long time compared to the bandsaw
the f
just melt it apart with your heating pad or whatever like everyone else does
Sounds really fun
Am I the only one that actually wants to hear the full truss rod lecture?
One day brotherman
A truss rod lecture would be like being in school and listening to a 45minite lecture on athletes foot. Shudder. 😵
Please the next video...destroy a fender custom neck..for make more subs . Thanks. I love this channel.
I'd be happy to
@@TexasToastGuitars then go buy one and do it full send
Hi guys. Here's an idea for a video. Take an old Kay guitar (60's ish) , remove the neck, remove the fret board and replace the old steel bar with a truss rod!
That is a great idea
Duh.. made well, works just fine at the price. Surprise, surprise.
Well, the truss rod works well. the rest of the neck... I guess you could use them on your guitar?
Plot Twist: He did put that truss rod in someone's guitar! 🤔
*
Damnit, now I HAVE to take the course, just to get that truss rod lecture....
How to remove a fretboard lol
One way
Now do the same to one of your own built necks. What are you trying to prove?
I'm not trying to prove anything I'm just making a video.
THEY JUST DON'T MAKE EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE !
I guess not
So , your point is that these are good necks? Based on your video that would be my conclusion.
You are encouraged to come to any conclusions you like. I lay it out fire y'all to play it out.
Stuart Stevens the neck had a big twist in it. It got worse the longer we had it. Truss rod won’t fix that problem.
Why is a double acting rod of any use ?
When I look back at forty years as a luthier I may recall three ocassios when the dip/extra relief could have been useful.
The negative acting mode in these rods is a redundant feature. The extra weight and depth , the seductive possibility to fit the rod badly and the small hex key stripping while being impossible to replace are also down sides.
The drooped rod with fitted wooden cover strip is still king and sorts the luthiers from the monkeys.
Gibson , Yamaha , Maton , PRS aren't sucked in by the duplicitous wand.
Okay? Kick the bi-acting rod for touch.
I don't think the single acting rod is all that. Hamer had it figured out but most companies don't. I look for durability and action of the rod more than vintage spec. You got to do you man.
Nothing too surprising here. A truss rod is a simple device and they are manufactured by the million, so it's probably as easy for the manufacturer to use a standard inexpensive product from a catalogue as to try to save a few pennies by looking for someone to make a cheaper one. The wood is a different matter: there, you get what you pay for, and bottom-of-the-market is going to be barely adequate. After that, it's how the neck is assembled that is going to determine how stable the finished neck is before any truss rod adjustment is made. Having to make extreme adjustments is usually an indication that something more fundamental is wrong.
Totally
(hand raised) if you did a video of THE trussrod lecture, you wouln't have to say it again! win win!!! work smart, not haaadh
could've just hit the fretboard with a good old clothes iron for a few minutes and it would've popped off with a knife once the glue softened
What's the fun of that?
C'mon...they have POWER tools!
The neck had a big twist in it, and was junk.
If the neck was twisted then it was a Gibson.
1970s Gibson LPs had plywood bodies , but they marketed them as ''pancake'' bodies to those who do not understand the meaning of 'plywood' . Gibson began boring holes in all their Les Pauls in 1983 even some custom shitshop LPs have holes .
@@carmineredd1198 Yes, and holes were filled whith balsa plugs , this bulding was to lightened the guitars.
