- Adjusting the truss rod on a guitars neck is an often-misunderstood procedure. Not all guitar necks are created equal but Guitar players, new and old, are concerned that they are going to break something. We have abused this Amazon guitar neck to see if we could break the truss rod and now it is time to cut out the rod with great vengeance and furious anger.
For everyone who is still hunkered down in the house or just looking for a little bit of infotainment we are doing a lot of extended videos so you can zone out a little bit.

If you over tightened to a point of neck fracture ,then the truss rod was good enough .

I bought one of those necks for my dad three years ago. It was a cheap Chinese made bastard exactly like the one that you showed in this video. Only I painted it surf green to match the body that I built a guitar for him. It didn't sound stellar but it works and the trussrod in it worked too. I bought stuff from China until the Corona Virus came along and now I don't buy anything from them. Either way it works my dad is happy and so am I. I said to myself when I first saw the beginning of this video to remove the fretboard which is exactly what you did. I see that you know what you're doing. Thank you for sharing this with us. The neck looks a lot like the one that came with a okoume Tele kit I assembled recently. Mine was quite good, no warping and good fret work although the plastic nut was awful (I replaced it).

That was great. Very surprised to see a decent truss rod buried in there.
I've ordered quite a few Chinese cheap as chips necks. They're very useful for practicing fret leveling, reshaping, refretting and any operations you would not want to practice on more expensive necks, and a few of them are ok for a home budget build.
How about a video on how you determine the wood isn't good on the neck? How do you inspect for twists, bends etc. Is it just visual, do you use measurement tools etc.?

I, for one, don't find truss rod videos boring, I've always wondered why and how they work and wouldn't mind a "deep dive"...
Slightly OT: I have two necks from Goodwill salvaged guitars and the fingerboards look like nice rosewood (but what do I know) and would like to salvage those for future builds. What would be the best way to remove (intact) the fretboards? Use a heat gun to loosen the glue or bandsaw? (Of course I'd be pulling out the frets also)...

Very cool video. I'm actually surprised that the access hole to adjust the truss rod looks so traditional, and yet they could use the modern style flat truss rod.
Cool vid. I've ordered a few necks from China. The wood is really cheap, could be maple, but maybe not, really lightweight and has a plastic feel to it. Neck pocket tenons are way out of tolerance, usually too small. Tuner holes were fine, but metric spec. Surprisingly, the fret work was pretty decent. Some fret sprout, but not in need of leveling.

I know this is probably a dumb question, I’ve seen you put a piece of blue tape over the truss rod before you apply the glue to glue on the fretboard, do you remove the tape before you attach the fretboard?
I would assume you do, but then I wondered if the glue got on the truss rod would it impede it’s performance.
Again, I always learn and am entertained by your posts.

@@TexasToastGuitars I think I would listen to it to be very honest. About three years ago I thought truss rods were some sort of magical voodoo. Now I adjust them unabashed! You need to do a video on it I guarantee you I would watch it start to finish and I would stand and applaud you at its’ conclusion!
I get my truss rods at Bitterroot too! Perhaps you can call those guys and have them give you a (remote) shop tour? It's possible they are resellers though, which is fine as I can buy a dozen at a time instead of a thousand piece minimum order.
Those are great truss rods and like the ones I use myself, fender use the most hopeless rods just a single rod which shear the threads off the end. I’m sick of repairing them. I’m unsure if they have changed them but the older ones are crap.

I've been working at guitar teching for live bands over the past 20 years.and I can tell you with 100% accuracy that ever since smartphones were invented and it was easier than sitting down in front of a PC and I could just have my phone on my lap and my guitar and amp and my other hand and amp sitting on the table in the front of me? My playing after 30 years has jumped leaps and bounds as far as quality wise and preciseness and having a better ear for Melody.I think this reins surgeons with all the guitar kids learning to play these days cuz they're cooped up has also reignited that fire I had under my ass when I was 15 and I'm pushing 50."everything music and guitar shenanigans official channel"I leave everything up that I play the drunk stuff the good stuff the sloppy stuff the great stuff the absolutely mind-blowing to me sometimes stuff I can't believe I even pulled off but I definitely suggest giving it a check out and sort the videos from oldest to newest and watch them get better and better.

I would say that these necks should be avoided and are unacceptable at any price.

Unfortunately I’ve had to buy some of these necks because of the price for an American made neck but the main problem with them are usually at the headstock because they don’t adjust from the forth fret to the nut but every once in a while (great while) you actually get a good neck and if anyone’s interested in getting one that isn’t the cheapest thing you can get but good for a good price Edenguitars has some really good stuff anyway good luck out there and thanks for the great video dude

Would it come apart if your steamed it with like a cloths iron heat brakes glues seal or would it be a major pain that way idk you channel looks awesome I’m subscribing
The fret board certainly could have been removed more cleanly, however there was never any intention of using this neck since it was a knock-off, had a big twist and was 39 dollars. I really just wanted to see the truss rod. Speed was what was required... not finesse

I guess the fact it cracked the neck is a sign the truss rod is up to the job. That was good to see it in there. Do you think it was deliberately glued in or splooge from the fretboard getting in there?

If i was going to build a Tele neck from scratch how would i know what would be a good piece of hardrock maple???

I bought one of the cheap Amazon telecaster necks and the mahogany truss rod stripe (aka. skunk stripe) was painted on 🤣 Interesting to see the truss rod itself is functional in this test.

I just bought a cheap Telecaster neck online. The neck heel was so much deeper than it should have been I couldn't use it
One of the most ubiquitous Chinese manufacturers, Kmise, consistently make their neck heels about 3mm too high. I've written to their customer support and described in detail why that is a bad idea, suggesting they should adapt to Fender standard neck heel height etc. Not sure if it will help.
Sand it down, It's part of the fun!

why would you remove the fret board from a warped and unusable neck with a hot knife? Would you want to reuse a cheap fretboard on something good? do you enjoy the slow trip around the barn? Is your time worth nothing?

I am quite surprised that it had at least a decent truss rod in it.
Different does not make it worse. It looks ok. I have bought a few Amazon necks and they work just fine. At 30 dollars they work well for your own builds builds. I had one that twisted but it was my fault. It was in a hot then cold then hot car for over a year. I forgot it was there lol.

Warmoth modern side adjust trus rods blow! I have had two that twist when tightened. Should have went with your daily driver kit.

Its go to know the ShartCaster will have a somewhat decent truss rod. The body is great, but the neck, I think, came from a Chinese Amazon kit. I cant remember to be honest. My son will have fun banging it around anyhow lol

Amazon doesn't deal with lots of sellers, amazon is just offering their platform to sellers, they have no clue what kind of shit they're selling. Tons of scammers on amazon, especially in electronics.

I honestly believe most of the typical suppliers are resellers of Chinese guitar parts and likewise a lot of North American guitar companies bolt on a lot of Chinese parts. I see too many similarities in a lot of the better castings and designs on places like Amazon.

Hi guys. Here's an idea for a video. Take an old Kay guitar (60's ish) , remove the neck, remove the fret board and replace the old steel bar with a truss rod!

Stuart Stevens the neck had a big twist in it. It got worse the longer we had it. Truss rod won’t fix that problem.
Why is a double acting rod of any use ?
When I look back at forty years as a luthier I may recall three ocassios when the dip/extra relief could have been useful.
The negative acting mode in these rods is a redundant feature. The extra weight and depth , the seductive possibility to fit the rod badly and the small hex key stripping while being impossible to replace are also down sides.
The drooped rod with fitted wooden cover strip is still king and sorts the luthiers from the monkeys.
Gibson , Yamaha , Maton , PRS aren't sucked in by the duplicitous wand.

I don't think the single acting rod is all that. Hamer had it figured out but most companies don't. I look for durability and action of the rod more than vintage spec. You got to do you man.
Nothing too surprising here. A truss rod is a simple device and they are manufactured by the million, so it's probably as easy for the manufacturer to use a standard inexpensive product from a catalogue as to try to save a few pennies by looking for someone to make a cheaper one. The wood is a different matter: there, you get what you pay for, and bottom-of-the-market is going to be barely adequate. After that, it's how the neck is assembled that is going to determine how stable the finished neck is before any truss rod adjustment is made. Having to make extreme adjustments is usually an indication that something more fundamental is wrong.

If the neck was twisted then it was a Gibson.
1970s Gibson LPs had plywood bodies , but they marketed them as ''pancake'' bodies to those who do not understand the meaning of 'plywood' . Gibson began boring holes in all their Les Pauls in 1983 even some custom shitshop LPs have holes .
