That's a doug fir. It's not tone wood, it's CONE wood:)
HAHAHAHA
I hate that this made me smile lol
Dad humor at its best.
"The truth will not set you free. The truth will just make you hated by people on the internet."
Best quote I've heard in a long time.
Great idea for the 2x4 guitar. Draw a grid pattern on it to allow everyone that takes your guitar building class to sign it. Once it is filled up, front and back, you make another 2x4 guitar and start having it signed. Just make sure to put another layer of finish over the signatures so they will last for decades. The guitar would be like a cool instrument yearbook.
That's a great idea!
You say "No Ads", but this video is essentially an ad for Stew Mac....great video, Matt! I like how much fun you have doing these.
I would argue that all of my videos are ads for my shop.
I think you may be pleasantly surprised at how good a guitar this will be, Especially the neck. It should be fairly light weight and if the neck is quarter sawn it will hold up over time with a durable finish on it.
You are right... I would be surprised if this turns out to be anything other than acceptable
Love the workstation. It got me immediately looking for something similar for my workshop!
Great to hear!
Cool idea on the tool carts - planning on a class in 2025.
I think there are a few things to consider when looking at using "home depot" or "found" wood for a guitar project. What type of wood are you dealing with. Keep in mind the same woods that are used for construction can be used for building guitars, e.g. Spruce is used for acoustic guitar tops and is undoubtedly a "tone wood" by any definition, and it's also used for construction. Similarly pine has been used by Fender to build Telecasters (some knotty ones even selling for ridiculously high prices). Another question is the quality of the specific piece of wood. Often construction wood comes from smaller trees (e.g. acoustic guitar tops might be from larger older growth) and is generally just random "run of the mill" wood. If you know what you're looking for you can select pieces where the grain looks better than others. As others have noted construction wood often isn't really that dry, it's dried but not really all the way, i.e. you should assume that you need to dry it for a fair bit longer before you use it. There's the question of form factor, 2x4 means making a multi-piece body which may or may not be desirable, mostly from an aesthetic perspective but it can also be extra work to joint all those pieces. Keep in mind manufacturers like Gibson and Fender sell 3-piece bodies. Another factor is the specific wood vs. the application. Necks need to be fairly strong as they're under string tension, if the grain does funny stuff they'll also be prone to warping if humidity changes, so a wood like pine is usually not a great neck choice (though specific types of pine like southern yellow pine can be used and laminating different woods can improve the strength and stability of a neck, i.e. use a multi-laminate neck). Similarly a fretboard needs to be hard so you can fret it properly and so it doesn't wear. All that said, using "found" or recycled or unusual woods can be a lot of fun. I think this Douglas Fir (which is actually not a fir but a pine) guitar might turn out great if the neck wood ends up good. Other builders use Douglas Fir, I've heard good things, I'd love to get some but it's hard around here where they grow all over the place (Western Canada) for some reason. Another thing is that soft woods can be annoying to work with because they dent so easily. Even after you put a finish on them they'll dent more easily.
There is a lot to unpack here
I'm going to stick with it is a terrible idea to build a guitar from 2x4s
@@TexasToastGuitars Let's see what it sounds like! It makes sense that for *you* it's not the right thing.
Man these workbenches are cool. I feel like I must return for another workshop just to try them.
Please do!
Wish there was a slight burst on it at least :(
Can’t wait to see how this thing changes over the next few years…keep updating!
Also, one drawer should be a cooler!
We have a refrigerator. Since the tool boxes are on wheels you could roll it close to the fridge
I know it's an absolutely stupid idea...but I freakin love the 2x4 guitar...It's just something every guitar builder needs to see done right at least once
You might be right my friend
Very nice. Thanks for sharing this with us
Thank you my friend
I dig the idiot proofing on the bench. If anybody’s fumble fingers would knock something off the bench it’s me.
Aw man I really hate when I miss the live - enjoy the chat with all the guys! Looking forward to using the new work bench see you soon! - Cheers from Canada
I'm looking forward to it too Dan
Thanks for making the mistake so we don't have to. Even though some of us will! I might have painted the ends of the guitar red and stapled a bar code to the end so it looks like a proper 2x4!
We can still staple one on there 😃
Matt glad you made it so we dont have to.😂
Some people were having trouble with that part my friend.
hi matt i built a a total hollowbody strat solidbody style from a slab of pine and a pine top. no bracing. it came out quite good pine stain stabilizer and some light stain and clear laquer. i d send you a pic but you cant on you tube
I support your fireworks PSA, and am in awe of your show if you can believe it. At ease. Carry on.
Thank you my friend
I love how you keep telling us not to do this while holding an increasingly beautiful guitar that shows you totally can.
You know how it is my friend just because you can doesn't mean you should
@@TexasToastGuitars This is the point really. If you make a guitar, it costs you more in time than anything else. The price difference between pine and the lower cost hardwoods is not that huge but a hardwood is so much nicer to work with. There is no need to use mahogany. Gibson probably only first used that because in the 1950s it was dirt cheap. Furniture, window frames, you name it, they made it out of mahogany. That's why there's none left!
Happy Independence Day!
I have looked at those tool boxes many times for my shop. Not that my opinion means all that much. I just think they are a good hight and the fact that they are mobile. Very versatile . Have a good fourth Matt and Chris.
They are going to be great for our workshops and I think that if you have a small space they make a ton of sense too
That 2x4 idea is interesting! But I totally understand! That stuff is still wet to a degree when you buy it! #Boomerang !
Yes, there are a ton of reasons to not use this material and that is a big one. This particular 2x4 was really old and it isn't moving around that much. Still a dumb idea
@@TexasToastGuitars Thanks for all the great info & for your responses Matt!
i appreciate your effort here. as i've said other times. i'm learning a lot from this. and now i don't need to make all the mistakes :)
That is a nice thing for you to say my friend
" Stickys and Pokies are essential for all guitar and amp repair tool boxes .
Oh yeah you better believe it
What I'm getting from this is... If you want to use cheap wood (2X4s) to practice woodworking skills (sawing, routing, sanding, shaping, etc.) that's probably a good idea. But if you're building a guitar, go for the good stuff.
That is absolutely correct in my book
Make one out of Balsa wood next hahah
2X4SG iron branding burnt into the guitars top would be nice.
Maybe on the next one
Even if it's a bad idea, I think the SG looks really cool. People are going to want legit Texas Toast SGs after this. The TTSG
I do love that body style, especially when it's a neck through
@@TexasToastGuitars hell yeah. A run of TTSGs would be badass
I’m liking the SG big time!
At least it’s (well!) made out of wood…not colored pencils or some other nonsense…!!!
Hahaha I like your style
Where can an amateur guitar builder get Mahogany for a neck and body, a rosewood fretboard, a maple cap, in "guitar" quality, for $20-$30? I would think the price difference is much larger than what you're suggesting. By the way, Douglas Fir is a pretty nice wood and even professional instrument builders have used it. It's even used in acoustics. I would suggest that people can learn some skills with cheaper materials where messing things up isn't a huge deal before buying really expensive woods, I built my first body using 2x6's that cost me $0. I love that guitar and still play it. I wouldn't use a soft wood for a neck regardless (but that's not a tone wood thing).
Okay
I completely understand that the 2x4 guitar is a stupid idea but I hafta know! I wanna hear it! And YES! Of course tonewood is a real thing. Weather you can hear it through the amp or not, I believe you can and i can proove it, doesn't even matter. You can FEEL it in your hands and against your body. A guitar that you can really feel will always sound better because of inspiration! When you connect with an instrument you play better, and playing better sounds better. Just sayin!
I fully intend to string it up and let y'all hear it
I’m still curious how it holds up under tension.
Matt if you need comic books I collect them I could give you some
Now yer talking!
Oh!!! It all make sense now. SG stands for "stupid guitar"
It certainly does
"I'm doing this so you don't have to..."
Matt clearly underestimates the hypnotic monkey-see-monkey-do power he wields as an online personality. 😂
I don't have that kind of juice
Why is it that every time you say don't do it, I just want to do it more:)
Forbidden fruit maybe
I don't know where you got that price difference between good stuff and bad stuff. Here in Europe construction pine/fir 2x4 costs 3€/meter. Let's assume that you buy 4 meters is 12€. Should be enough for a guitar. Same with "good stuff", body blank Khaya mahogany 70€, neck blank maple 39€. Together this is 109€ including shipping. So, the difference is whopping 97€!. Maybe things are totally different in America.
I can't up with that in Colorado
That explorer in the background really deserves to be finished 😢
I think so too
Do you think the neck is way worse of a idea ? More so than the body?
I really think that building a guitar with any 2x4s is not a good idea
Home Depot link did not take me to the toolbox
Hmmmm let me see what I can do amigo. I'm pretty sure we still get credit but I want it to take you right to it.
Me either…🤷🏼♂️
Looks like Home Depot's website is down at the moment
LOL, TTG broke the Home Depot Internets.
Hopefully, using your link first will work
Yay LETS GO!!!
Right on!
@@TexasToastGuitars hey I'm pretty sure that 2 by 4 is gonna be just fine!
@@chadwilliams8583 I like your style and enthusiasm
Take a shot every time he says it's a bad idea and not worth the cost savings.
Yeah do that
Tone is in the knob that’s why it says tone duh 😅
So obvious
Is that an sg in striped natural over your left shoulder in the beginning of the video?
That is a really old guitar made with zebra wood
Ok. Good to know you're not stealing my ideas.
If only the body was made from 2x4s, this would be actually a great guitar.
What?
Link for the tool chest doesn’t take me to it…🙁
What’s the model…?
It is the husky 9 drawer rolling tool box not sure the model
Matt, I tried to use your link to buy a tool chest like yours, but the link does not go to a tool box, it only goes to the home page. Can you give me the model number of the one you got...I need a new tool box/chest and have for a while now. HD has too many choices to just guess at it.
