The Fender Tele in the video was a Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster. The control plate comes reversed. I just got use to using it that way, so I did the same on the Kit Tele. @32:08 you had it right the first time. Toggle switch goes toward the front (neck) Awesome looking guitar!
Thanks Edge. M~
You are correct however some players like it backwards.
I actually did mine backwards when I relic'd my Tele
If you flip the control plate, what he is calling the neck pickup is actually the bridge. Unless you flip the 3 way switch around.
@@litemetal when i flipped the plate, i just flipped the pickup wires so moving forward was neck and moving back was bridge. The wire length prevented me from just flipping the switch around.
When i was 6 my dad gave me a little gibson parlor guitar. I sanded it and coated it with linseed oil. It turned out pretty. I did it all myself so i felt real proud of it. I learned to play on that guitar. I love that thing. Carried it with me everywhere i went.
That's awesome. Thanks for the story, love it. M~
Man - Killer guitar build! That is one awesome Telecaster right there. And great tones and playing too. That was some down-home, down-south swamp styling you closed it out with, and man that sounded sweet with this guitar and amp! Love it love it love it. I gotta build one of these now!
Thanks Jimmy. It did come out great. You should git ya one. 😎
She’s a beaut ! Loved your idea of sanding off the chrome to get that nice pink patina. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Much. M~
Just found you
Thanks for allowing us to share. Lovely Tele.
Thank you kindly!
You continue to amaze me! The barncaster looks and sounds great! You play pretty darn good too!
Thanks Dan. M~
I'm a full-time guitar repair/setup/ luthier and I've done a few 'kits' for customers who didn't want to pay £1500/£2000 for a fully custom made guitar! All I use out of the kit is the neck and the body most of the time. To do a full custom kit build is around £800 ( including custom wound pickups and nitro finishing and stainless steel frets )
Thanks that's awesome. M~
I like your choice of color and the brass-ish hardware choices. Just right for a teley style.😊
Nice job on your guitar build. I have never seen a tele style guitar finished that way. Your guitar really
looks sharp.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. M~
What a great job you did with that $ 220 guitar and the guitar you used to copied the guitar I had never thought about ever playing or owning it but now I know different because of you breaking it down by you telling us about each part of the instrument thanks for that. I’m impressed with your results of the instrument you have rebuilt and how well it is performing. Keep up the good work and keep playing.
Thank you Michael. M~
Really great job on the kit build. I love the finish. Just an observation... "I," think that it would enhance the finished guitar if the pickguard were more of a matte finish as opposed to the high gloss. I believe it would be more in keeping with the antique feel;.Totally great job.
Thank you William. Its funny you say that, cause I was thinking about sanding the pick guard with some fine grit paper to take the shine off a bit. I may still try that. 😎🎸
Love that guitar!! Nice work!
Thanks Charles. M~
Looks great! Glad you put the torch down for this build🤙🏼
Thanks 👍
I take a 10” piece of chain and put 3 or 4 3/16” bolts/nuts towards one end, then smack the wood with the bolts. Makes great impact dents for distressing.
That's a great idea, Thanks. M~
I was skeptical when you started to distress it with the screws and thought oh my this might not look so great but you totally pulled it off. It really looks really cool and easing that edge really was a great idea and it looks awesome. Definitely one cool and great sounding guitar. If you did use the strings that came with it means once you put some good ones on it will sound even better. Great Job Michael and glad I some how ran across your channel and I’m excited to buy a kit for my grand daughter and I to put together. She’s learning and taking lessons from a teacher that has her reading and playing notes and not just cords by memory and he has been teaching over 50 years and is thrilled how well she is doing. She is very smart and catches on really fast.
That's awesome, Thanks Ron. M~
Very nice and when they chrome they polish the part then clean it then apply copper then nickel then the chrome which I understand is clear and makes the nickel shinny.
Great tip, thanks M~
Love your relic and finish work, really enjoyed watching. You are very talented sir, looking forward to seeing you do more guitar builds!
Thank you kindly!
I found a found a cheap Gibson took all the wiring out bought Seymore Duncan pickups had every screw nut bridge saddle tuners all replaced and my little guitar rocks I love it
Sounds aweome. good deal. M~
So AWESOME !!! I know how I'm going to finish my kit when I get it !! Thanks so much for this video !😀
Thanks ddavis. I think that finish came out awesome. You should try it. Fun. M~
@@SouthernFireGuitars Oh I'm gonna for sure !!!! I can't wait to see how mine turns out as you know all woods are different so I hope I get one as good as the one you made !!!
@@ddavismusic2176 Yep, you never know how the wood is going to be in these kits.
Beautiful finish, Michael 👍 Love the stressed look and the natural finish.
Thank you Ot. 😎
Use those strings to align the neck, then put decent ones on. Pull the frets and sand a better radius into it.
That's awesome thanks. M~
I like the design, it's like a thunderstorm coming at you.
Thank you, Troy. M~
Just a lil fyi, when u string up the guitar n tune it to pitch, loosen the 4 neck screws and the strings will pull the neck into the neck pocket, and set it deeper, it, gives the neck a solid joint w/ the body!
Cool, thanks for the tip
Sounds awesome from my ears
What a beautiful guitar. Great job.
Super cool guitar: I love the antique distressed look you came up with. Awesome tone and great style of playing. Thank you, brother!
Thank you too!
I would have to say absolutely perfect because you don't see many people doing things the old way anymore nor do you see any body playing the guitar with the classic cords any more sir.
Thank you, Amy. I like the classic chords. M~
Nice work- this is a great look for a Tele that you just don’t see, I get the feeling that other people might try for this style of finish. You made some good choices and I’m including your wife! You got a good thing going brother- thanks for sharing 🎸
Thanks Man, I appreciate that. M~
Cool Vid. Just yesterday, I took a HB TE52 (lefty) and based on hearing that a righty bridge plate (where the bridge pup is slanted in in reverse) softens the high E and tightens the low E, made the mod...had to drill/chisel/Dremel out some body to fit the pup. Easy. I think it does make the bridge pup less ice-picky at least. I also always remove the neck pup from the tone pot to improve clarity and increase output to match the bridge (on Squiers and MIMs anyway...and the HB too). You married a good woman.
hello! the guitar sounds really
good I like the way you put it together cool color too
good job on it
Thank Al. M~
Thank you so much for a really cool and inspiring video. I am definitely gonna give a kit a try
Thank you, Do it, they are a lot of fun. M~
You really put the "IT" in kit. Looks and sounds great.
Thanks Allen. M~
Beautiful work!! You've given me some ideas for my next kit. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Bruce. I'm looking forward to another one my self. :)
Tx for showing and sharing. Looks like I should be able to handle this a build one in the future. Stay well.
Your welcome, Ben. They are pretty easy to build and a lot of fun. M~
My wife did the same thing for me Christmas 2022. I got a double neck 6-12 string. Still have not built it yet but am planning to soon.
Cool, I may do one of those soon too, Ive been looking at them. M~
Great video. Keep in mind, if you reverse the control plate, the proper pickup selection will be backwards to. I took a Bullet Tele and upgraded it. I installed a 4 way switch. Have a great day.
Thanks, Good tip. M~
Awesome job Brother!! That piece came out beautiful and sounds the business!! I should have you build me one!!🤘🏻🎸
Thank you Randy. M~
I've been wanting to see someone put one of these kits together and review it
I don’t have a t-style and after seeing yours I'm going to try building one, yours looks fantastic and sounds great. Thanks 🤠
Thanks Harold, Yes, you should give it a go, they are fun to build. M~
nice build video! finish is awesome!
Wow the finish looks amazing. Nice job!
So original and cool. Like how you don't over do the worm holes or crack relicing . Your "Barbara" wire logo is very cool looking. Only thing I didn't get was why you reversed the control plate.
Thanks Steve. I bought a Fender Special Adition Deluxe Ash Telecaster, the control plate comes reversed, And I just got use to it, and kind of like the volume knob at my fingers. So I reversed the one on the build. 😎
@@SouthernFireGuitars That explains that. I have seen a player that does that because he likes to do the violin ,volume knob swells. Thanks for the quality content videos.
While you're working on this beautiful guintar, we can hear the chickens laying their opinions back there... that is definitely a plus!
yes, they are always doing that lol
Wow! I really love the finish and like the wormwood effect you did. While watching the video near the end, your logo was superimposed on the guitar body for a second. It looked really good almost like a whiskey barrel. I like the distressed look you did to the metal components as well. I have a kit tele that I am waiting to build after I decide on how to finish the body. I really like this and think I may have found the finish for me. Cheers for all the effort and info you shared. I am now a subscriber.
Thank you brother, good luck on the kit build. M~
Wow, you took a tele and turned it into a...tele. Who could have guessed that 😂
hello Michael, that was a great video. I also ordered a kit and built it in the same style. looks good. Greetings from Germany
Thanks Peter. Its a lot of fun building these things, for sure. M~
Dude, that is sick, love how it turned out. I wish you would have showed how you burnt that vane through the body, that is the play. I really dig that with the finish color and all, super awesome looking guitar. I friggen want to make me one now dang it.
Thanks, I burnt the vane with a soldering iron. 😎
👍👍 nice build sir.
I just put fender Yosemite pickups in one of my tele's
(ash/maple/maple) with the 920D 4way control plate.
It's hard to put a good tele down. they make you want to play ☺️
Thanks Thomas. M~
I kind like the reversed controls. Great build
Fantastic video and fantastic build Michael. I was glued to the video through out! When I saw the body of the guitar I literally said ' Wow 😲. I'm sooo sorry to hear about the squirrel Michael 😔 that's too bad 😆 💜
Thanks Liesl. It came out great, I was very happy with it. I was sad about the squirrel..😎
I love the finish ! I built mine in early 2019, has a bone nut, realized that I made the same mistake as you and put the control plate backwards too ! I might have to leave it that way, since I don't want to solder the pickups back. I painted mine TV yellow, with acrylic according to DIY Gene !
If u install the control plate wrong, dont fret! Alotta Tele players flip the plate around to use the volume knob as a volume swell with thier pinky! Cool mod!
Thanks, I got use to the plate being backwards lol
Surprised you didn't hammer the plates, great vid, have one of these on the way
Next time! :)
Actually the selector switch on a telecaster is the original way you had it. The switch is forward of the knobs. That being said, Bill Kirchen, who played guitar on the song "Hot Rod Lincoln" always reversed his switch to the way yours is. He would rewire the first knob as volume, and the second one closest to the bridge as tone, because of the switch, but he did this to all his telecasters.
By moving the volume to the top, he was able to make all those cool sound effects by manipulating the volume with his fingers as he played. There is a cool video on RUclips about how he did it, and he demonstrates how the mod helped him make those sound effects.
If anyone is interested, if you search RUclips for "Bill Kirchen Hot Rod Lincoln Tele mod" a series of videos will come up. Its the first one with Dan Erlewine. Its a great video!
I will have to check that out. Thanks. My Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Tetecaster came that way, and I got so use to playing it like that. I like the volume knob right at my finger tip, so, I turned it around on the kit guitar as well. You can see them here. reverb.com/p/fender-special-edition-deluxe-ash-telecaster
Dang you’ve done it again…another masterpiece!!!
Thank you, John. It was fun. M~
Looks and sounds amazing good job
I like the look of that sanded down bridge
Thanks brother. M~
Glad to meet ya, brother. I like the life you got for yourself. This is the second time I found you, so I got your channel saved this time. Hey, I was surprised by the way you sanded the chrome for a finish that might just be a bit more expensive. On my screen it looks like a cross between rose gold and rainbow. The dark cracks in the body are frankencool too. FYI, them chickens aint no bother at all. Anyway, great video. Your show’s a refreshing change of pace. Thanks! Oh, yeah, lol. It sounds great too!
Thanks Dude. I appreciate that. M~
Very nice build, like the finish, very simple and unique
Thanks Jerry, M~
These are great! I watched that other barn one you made and I loved it.
Have you ever thought of making one where the finish is all smooth and the wood grain is completely smooth??
I watched a video on RUclips where the guy used a product called tru oil which is a gunstock oil and he was able to polish the true oil to a shiny finish. He painted his and sealed the grain first with a product called Plastic Wood. He used that as a grain filler. Shoot it actually worked really well. I wrote to him several years after the video was made and he said that the guitar finish still looked as good today as it did several years ago when he first made it.
I haven't done that with a kit, but I just built a Solid Body 3 string from a slab of Sweet Gum and did a smooth natural finish. It's beautiful. You can see it on my website under Solid Body Guitars www.southernfireguitars.com/
Thanks, good info. M~

Good job there buddy, lucky man too having such a cool wife buying you this beauty! Sounds great. Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
Thanks brother. M~
You did an amazing job...that is a beautiful looking Tele...however....on all of my Teles, the control plate is the other way....pickup selector in the front and volume and tone knobs in the back. You do very nice work.
Thanks. I bought a Fender Deluxe Special Edition Natural Ash Telecaster and the control plate was turned around, I just got use to playing like that, so I built the kits like that as well. I kind of like the volume knob at my finger tips. Sounds and looks great. Would have looked good with that high voltage method too.
Thank you, Jack. Maybe next time with the high voltage :) M~
Really nice job especially the “cracks”. How did you get them the darker colour without getting any area around them darker. I just finished putting a kit guitar into an Artuero Fuente box and it sounds great. The guitar kit was missing the body.
Thanks Bob. After cutting the groves in with the razor knife, I darkened them in with my soldering iron. :) I like those Arturo boxes. That sounds pretty cool. M~
Happy Father’s Day dude.loved your build give your wife a tickle and say thanks lol
Thanks! Will do!
Awesome looking guitar!! I couldn’t find the neck radius or nut width in the spec’s on their website, you wouldn’t happen to know those measurements would you? Love the way that body turned out!!!! 🎸
Thanks Tim. I don't know the neck radius or nut width, didn't really care for that price. I saw the same info you did. I guess they figure a beginner building the kit isn't going to care what the radius is lol
Thanks for the video, never thought of doin a build like that, you just gave me some great idea,s,think i,ll buy a strat kit build.

GREAT job!!! Looks and sounds beautiful. I'm looking to do the same thing just not sure which BYO company to get it from. I believe Stew Mac has the Wilkinson DIY's. Pricey, but nice. Definitely a Tele style.
Thanks, My wife bought me the StewMac Les Paul style kit for my birthday. I have a video on it as well.ruclips.net/video/Q2cqR5RW3TY/видео.html Definitely a little more $$$ but it was better quality for sure. Their Tele kit looks very nice, but yes, pricey.
Good guy! Perfect channel for my taste. Nice work. Greetings from Germany.
I like the way the wood turned out, I hate the color of the hardware! LOL, the control panel is backwards 😂
That's a beautiful guitar! Awesome work sir!
Really like the raw natural wood look. You scored the body but did you fill in the scores with some black paint or something else? - Great looking Tele. Sounded great on low open chords - very southern rock or ballsy country to my UK ears! Nice looking natural Tele - the way I like 'em. Thanks.
Thanks Rob, I used a soldering iron for fill in the cracks. M~
Beautiful Tele Michael. Sounds great as well. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Dennis. I'll keep em coming. M~
That Wilkinson neck pickup sounds SHHHWEEET!
After watching this, I'm tempted to try boiled linseed oil on the next guitar I mod. Cool build! I live south of you and the afternoons are just way too hot in the summer!

Lovely looking and sounding Guitar Michael, really unusual mate, Terrific Job, Lot of work but really, really worth it, Out of curiosity, That nice Fender you've got, is it vintage or newish Michael? Coming back to your wonderful kit build, This Guitar is really special and the sound was exceptional, your playing, Well, Brilliant, Great Video Again, Thanks Michael, Stay Safe and God Bless to you all.
Thank you, Peter. It was a lot of fun to build and finish. I am happy with it. The Fender Tele I have is not vintage, I wish it was. :( It is a Fender Tele made in Mexico. ( MIM). Its a Special Deluxe Ash model, The volume and tone control plate is upside down from a lot of other Telecaster models. Plays and sounds great. M~
Thank you Michael Clapton Bianconi, lol.
What is the body wood? Just saw the link ASH..Thanks for the video its nice to see another grown man excited like a kid at christmas.

My Grandpa used to tell me about the hot summers in Indiana. He said that one day back in 1930, it got so hot that all of the corn in the field started popping. The cows thought it was snowing, and they all froze to death.
Thanks. Great story 😀
@@SouthernFireGuitars since you said you like the antique wood look, let me share something cool with you.
The next time you feel like experimenting, brew up either a pot of coffee or tea, but make it about 5-10 times stronger than anything you would drink. Put this aside.
Get some fine steel wool and some white vinegar, and put the steel wool in the vinegar. Leave it overnight, and it will dissolve.
Rub the wood with the coffee or tea that you made. You won't notice a dramatic difference in color, but the tannins will soak into the wood. Let this dry, and rub in your steel wool vinegar mix. The vinegar and iron oxide will react chemically with the tannins in the coffee and the wood will start to turn gray, like an old unpainted barn that's been in the weather for many years. The more steel wool vinegar mix you rub into the wood, the darker it'll get. If you combine this with your worm holes, you might be very pleasantly surprised with the results. Practice with small amounts of the coffee and vinegar mix on little scraps of different kinds of wood. It costs almost nothing, and you get the same weathered look as old wood left out in the elements.
Have fun, and see if you like what happens.
Nice work, Fun video, lovely Tele.... That's 3 out of 3 Boss. How Cool is that?
(Answer?) .. Very cool. Thanks Boss, you are appreciated
