    Love the color. So much can happen painting outdoors with spray bombs. I encounter them all. Sometimes when I heat up spray cans, I’ll get orange peal. I try to make sure both paint and part is near the same temp.

    • @SouthernFireGuitars
      @SouthernFireGuitars  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Jackman. Yeah. it was a bit cool outside as well, so the lacquer was warmer than the wood. Sometimes you have to work with what you got :)

    Great video and fun to watch as ever. When you said you;d never done a sunburst before I thought " try it out on a piece of scrap wood first..." lol .As for the disaster along the way, Ive never done a thing that didn't need re thinking and rescuing half-way through from the mess I'd made of it - after that it went fine! Great job, and you learned some important painting tips!!! It’s odd that there was side binding but not top binding? Might have considered doing the amber in stain to give you better control of the amount of amber… also I don’t believe you did any nitrocellulose which may be why it’s more of a flat matte look. Also consider putting earplugs or some type of wadding for the bridge posts and tuner holes when you paint. Pro tip; a lil wax on your screws, I believe it helps seating the screw and less chance of damaging the wood! Great video, nice build! Happy birthday!!!

    Hey, new sub here. Your tobacco burst is truly fetching. I might have made some other choices with other parts of the guitar, for instance I would have made the sides of the body almost ebony black, and gone with a glossier varnish but there’s not question about quality of your careful work. And I am glad there are kits so different choices can be made. Sounds great, too! Cheers.

    I guess you gotta trust that the neck angle of the slot is perfect so your action isn't too high or too low. I'd be wanting to check that angle before gluing it into place, so that if necessary, adjustments could be made. Looks Great. How does it play? Did you have to dress the frets ends and stuff like that?

    I remember when I was building mine, a kit from "Bulldog Guitars" on the Ebay, set-neck project like yours the most nerve wracking part for me was scraping the Binding, especially the top portion...I did mine with a flat-edge Hobby Knife. It's funny too, I was trying for a Cherry 'Burst, and wound up with what looks like a Greeny Les Paul...go figure? But instead of Lacquer I finished the entire Guitar with Tinted Tung Oil, and it really gave it a Vintage look, which was completely accidental, but enough about me, nice job on your first 'Burst...came out WAY better than mine did!

    Hi Mike. First I would say you did a very good and commendable job here. I have done bursts in the past and they are very hard to get right.
    If I were to offer some constructive criticism here ( And it is but no means, it is not meant to be harsh) I find these kits, mostly coming out of the far east, this species of Mahogany had a lighter color with yellows and pink tones to it. I think I would have used a mahogany stain on the back and side before the clear coat. I would use stain over color coating and any chip in the paint would show up very bright, while staining goes a bit deeper and is easier to touch up.
    Just my two cents worth, again, you did a great job and I hope it gives you years of pleasure playing it.

    I think your burst turned out great! I am going to have to disagree on your choice on the black tuning machines, though. May just be my OCD talking, but, just my opinion mind you, if you did black for the tuning machines, you should have replaced the bridge and strap buttons with black as well. How many coats of clean satin did you apply and how long did it take for it to cure?

    • @SouthernFireGuitars
      @SouthernFireGuitars  2 года назад

      I added about 6 coats of clear satin, I put it together the next day. If it was a gloss finish and I was going to be buffing it out, I would have gave it a few more days. M~

      @@SouthernFireGuitars wow it sure cured quickly !When I made my Green Tele kit I used Duplicolor Ford Pacific Green and six coats of clear and I had to wait a month for it to cure enough to buff out!

      @@SouthernFireGuitars I know and generally I don't have patience so I had to force myself to wait. It was worth it!I put Wilkinson pick ups in it and a six unit fully adjustable bridge in it and it is one of the best guitars I have ever owned.Looks great too with the Tortoise Shell pick guard that really sets off the green body.

    Don't get me wrong the satin flat black with the mostly black chrome hardware except the gold switch plate and the switch and the bridge was gold was definitely a look just not necessarily one of my favorites..

    I have 3 custom shop Les Paul’s a R7,R8 and a R9 , thinking about building one like you did Sir……….
    Does it come with 500K pots ?
    Can I put in my own humbuckers in it ?
    Are the instructions easy to follow as in how to solder the pots up correctly??
    Hopefully you see this and give me some good feedback
    Thank you Sir

    I’m building this very kit after watching you do it,I’m going with a cherry red finish on the entire guitar with a gloss finish,I’m goin with all black hardware and EMG pickups (upgrading in advance😂)

      That's awesome. I like that cherry red finish too. Maybe on my next one 😉🎸

      The cherry red went on nice but upon spraying the clear gloss apparently it was satin,I reached out to Stewmac but yet to hear back,as you know their lacquer is expensive,do you have any idea of a compatible brand that I maybe can continue the satin finish or just go with the six coats and cut my losses
