I made a guitar out of firewood

- I made a guitar out of firewood for the guitar I will be using on my future album. The guitar is made from common firewood you can get at any store. It is made out of birch and white oak. The parts I used were ones I had lying around the shop. I take you through the process of building this guitar.
I prefer to use things that most people would throw away when I build guitars for myself. In this case firewood. I did this build in between the time I have been building a few custom guitars and doing restorations. The total time was weeks, but maybe 12 hours in labor. It was a side project. The neck was one I had lying around I had no use for. I didn't feel like building a new neck.
I did what I call an organic build. These are builds that have no plans or vision. They are completely improvised builds, and there are no mistakes. All accidents or parts that are imperfect become incorporated into the build.
It is much like a blank canvas and you just start painting until you have a finished masterpiece. It allows your creative nature to take over the build where you are not judging or trying to copy someone else. It is pure expression.
to get my luthier course you can find it here www.GelvinGuitars.com/shop it is a great course for those who want to learn how to repair and build custom guitars or basses.
I would very much like to see your organic build by posting it here on RUclips and placing the tag #organicbuild so I will be able to find it.
I usually go the other direction: start with a guitar and end with firewood. Nice work.
Hey so cooL! Organic builds are super fun. Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂
Just awesome....🎉
Love the orange rust lines ❤
Glad you're up and running. An acquaintance of mine also has MS and and has had major relief of all of his symptoms by slowly elimination of plant products and going full animal products. I did it for a year and had great success, and plan on returning to it soon. Great vid too.
Nice to see a new video from you.
Tell you what, I love them organic urethane but what I love even more is Will's Easy Guitar putting out videos and making beautiful guitars.
Excellent! This guy is pure gold !!!
Will, I've always enjoyed how you stick it to the big manufacturing companies who try to swear by the lies they've crafted to keep the little guy from doing what they want with an instrument. Simply phenomenal what you can do with some patience.
Looks pretty cool Will. It was interesting when you were finishing the guitar I noticed you added dobs of clear to help fill the grains and then add another layer straight over the top. Never thought of doing it that way! Would probably have saved me me using extra layers of paint.
I've been finishing off a build I did a while back on an ash body and had the same issues with a deep grain to it. I used a thinned out fence paint for the green so the grain came out, then hit it with loads of clear to even it out. Now the tedious task of rubbing it back....again.
Nice to see you back. Hope you're OK dude X
Yo will! Nice to have you back! Lovely build, keep it up, cheers
Awesome Build!!
FABULOUS BUILD. VERY IMPRESSIVE.
Happy New Year, Will! Thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure!
That was just killer. Gotta watch it again.👍👍🤘✌️
SO SO SO fricking kool I sooooooo want one big time. You sir are awesome.
Great build Will!!! Love the guitar.
Thanks!
@@WillsEasyGuitar you're welcome. Look forward to your album.
Wow amazing build. Came out great. Keep us posted when the album comes out! 🙏💪
For sure!!
I work in the marine industry and if I could conceptualize a guitar that represents it, this would be it! Unbelievable work can’t believe it’s firewood. Glad you’re back. Hope you’re feeling well. Great content as always.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you, Will. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
HEY MAN! Hope you're makin a comeback. I've been full tilt on the guitars but it hasn't been the same without ya.
thank you.
ive done this before too. i keep the pieces in a whicker basket for a year and by then its dried out and hard as a rock, its like torifying the wood without heat.
Very cool build, looks awesome. Glad to see you still goin even with your ms. I remember one day you prove you have it by having a shot on camera 😅
Great guitar man!
Also a life tutorial! 😊
Re upload your rambling man tracks . . walking or going to fix your sisters tiles on the road . . they were entertaining
Oak wood..
Brian May also used oak wood in his original Red Special.
May is a eugenics by pointy thing in arm enemy
@@benwinter2420 Yes, Brian is a genius.. 👍👍🇪🇸🇪🇸
😅😅
Now I understand why custom guitars cost so much and rightfully so.
Absolutely beautiful brother. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have been able to watch that build. Thank you for allowing me to watch that.😊
Stoked to see a new video Will! That guitar looks badass, who would think old oak firewood could look like flamed maple great job man!
Beautiful work, can’t wait to hear about your new album. Longtime subscriber and love your content. I’ve learned so much from your videos. Best of luck in the New Year.
That is so awesome that you did a build like that. Such artistic creativity! It takes a person with ultra-special talent to produce a beautiful, one-of-a-kind work of art like this! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Killer build Will glad to see you back doing videos and Happy New Year!!!!
I just watched. And I have to say……incredible build. I want to build my own for sure!
Killer scratch build bro. I mean that's phenomenal dude. It looks beautiful and I'm looking forward to hearing your album man. I'm actually working on mine right now. I'm trying to push mine out by about April. I wish you the best on your endeavors. Great video! Thank you much
SWEEEEEEEEEEEET❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
So that guitar looks sick. I am completely going to steal the idea of using the glow in the dark powder on a build. Love the idea of having no rules. I have done 4 complete builds so far. Three 6 string electrics and a bass for my father. I do not play bass. On each one I have had to cover up some screw up, and it ended up a cool part of the design. Hopefuly I stop screwing up soon.
Happy New Year!
May you release your album successfully
Nice ax!!
I got his Luthiery course many years ago. LOVED IT!! If you have a vision, his course will help you create it :)
Very interesting build & great vid. Heard your MS comment. I'm 58 and played for over 50 years. Also built Martin copies for 10 years. I've had RRMS 30 years.
That's a beautiful guitar. Wish I had the machinery and equipment to do but I'm getting too old.❤.
Man! You still got it Will! Beautiful!
When the video started, I thought you were joking. Building a guitar from firewood, what a troll. But the result looks stunning. Like a lightning storm over the ocean. I hope it plays as well as it looks. Good luck with the recording!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work Will! Absolutely stunning looking.
Where you been?
I'm new to building guitars.... Was there a clear coat that you would suggest avoiding? I'm really wanting to get a natural wood grain, blond, avoiding colors this time around? Went completely Satriani acrylic pour on the last one
avoid polyurethane like you use on furniture and doors. Urethane is fine, not poly.
That is the most Beautiful guitar I have ever seen. Imperfections where? I’m serious if I was a wealthy man I would try to buy one exactly like that! Wow!
Wow, thank you!
What a great build mate. Very enjoyable and as you say very Bob Ross as well.
I loved the build you did with the mesquite fire wood that guitar was badass to watch be built
Hey long time viewer. Thank you for all of your content. You have provided tons of info over the years, which has served me well on a couple of occasions. Several years ago, you did a parody cover of Hall & Oates "Rich Girl". Funnily enough, my wife and I really enjoyed it. We would listen to it and laugh. She would even listen to it on her own time. She really hated it when you took the video down. I totally understand why you removed it, but I am curious if you possibly still had the audio file of that song I could purchase from you? I assure you I would not repost it anywhere online, this would be for a middle aged white couple from nc to enjoy.. If it is possible let me know what would you feel would be fair compensation for it. , I can paypal you or whatever works best for you. Apologies for posting this here. Thank you very much for your time, and i look forward to watching this new video!
I still have it somewhere. it was during the time I was going to war with another channel and I was singing about him. lol
@@WillsEasyGuitar It was an epic diss for sure! If you happen to run across the audio one day, feel free to get up with me. Thank you very much for getting back. Happy New Years!
Whats the color name bro? It looks sick build. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey, Will!! I haven't got a notification from you channel in ages.
you probably have to click the bell 800 times and then another 430 times if you really want to subscribe to a channel.
Great video! You really found a format I like!
(Being curious but not sure how to phrase it without sounding like an ass) Why do you need a new guitar for the album? Is it a need that is a really big want? I think it’s a cool concept to make a guitar and then make an album with guitar. But I know you’re very methodical so I feel like there could be a reason where you actually need a guitar. I’m excited to hear the music you record with it!!
I only have a few guitars for myself. I dont collect them. my main one broke and I didnt want to build a new neck for it, so i retired it.
@@WillsEasyGuitar got it! I'm definitely going to steal the idea of building a guitar for each album future me writes, such a cool concept
Holy Jumpin Jesus Christ! Look who decided to make an appearance! Love the outcome of this build bro.. Hope all is going well with you medically speaking. The last time I heard from you it was touch and go and you had zero extra time on your hands.. Peace my bro..
how are you man? long time no talk.
@@WillsEasyGuitar I can't complain, everything is status quo here. I'm just glad you made an appearance. I was worried as hell about you, and I don't have your cell number anymore because of my last cell phone upgrade. It totally got rid of my entire phonebook. I miss the shit out of talking with my friend in Cali though. We had some of the best conversations. They still stay with me..
yeah, I have been working in the real world so much that I dont have time for anything. right now I am on a LOA because of a surgery I had a couple weeks ago. I supposed to go back in a few days.
Much of the time Necessity drives Ingenuity
Amazing what you did with firewood!!! Looks killer. I do have question, bc I've run into this and didn't5 know how to approach it. At 14;42 seconds you put some rather heavy blobs to fill in the open grain. What did you use there through that whole procedure? CA glue, followed by activator and then more clear coat? Thanks in advance if you actually read this and respond. Great build!!
Back with a stunner, what a great looker.
Awesome guitar man, that came out fantastic.
Happy to see you back and this guitar is beyond amazing brother it pops from every angle it is truly a work of art wish you the best and can’t wait to see more
Hey Will that is a beautiful guitar. Very cool, and inspiring. I don't play guitar, i play drums, bass, and vocals. It always fascinates me how things are made. Whether it's individually made or mass produced. In either case someone had a vision for what they wanted to build. Sometimes it just comes together.
Have a great day. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. 🙂
Nice dude. Seems like you feel decent, you have a lot of motivation
looks can be deceiving. during half of this i was recovering from surgery and feeling miserable.
Super interesting! And I guess the last 30 secs of the clip, when he was testing the pickups & then finale shot of the guitar, it looked SO different--from the angle of testing the pickups--to the complete product. For me, it had that "WOW" factor.
Oh! Man that guitar is so cool looking.
You have no idea how happy I was to see you posted a video, let alone it’s a full on organic guitar build! Too cool! Can’t wait to see what other videos are in the works, I’ve learned so much from you and I’m getting ready to work through my first full build myself
Rock on!
Happy new year 🎉
That's a great looking guitar man.
Happy new year!
Greetings from Algeria. Good to see you back with building videos. Great stuff. I got better at guitar repairs especially refretting thanks to your course. Many thanks Will.
Firewould is the best toanwould.
To be 100% sure, build it with a scalopped fretboard. Less toanwould required.
That is one hot guitar!!!
This is just amazing, I am on a project rightnow with a ol Jackson dinky that was found in a dumpster and given to me. If you dont mind my asking what brand of dyes do you use, this will be my first time using dyes ,other than stains. Awsome video.
Man that's an awesome build!
Super cool !
Interesting build Will. Make a guitar from a couple of bundles of firewood, and use the scraps for the fireplace. Definitely an efficient use of the wood. Look forward to the album.
So good to see you building. Been watching you for years. I love everything you do. Only you could make a guitar that gorgeous out of some firewood! 😂
Wow, that is beautiful Will. You do amazing work. You've got to be proud. I know I would be if I had those skills. Can't wait to hear it!!
Wonderful build! I love the way the glow in the dark turned out, it looks almost like lightning on an ocean! What did you do to fix the messed fret at the end? Did you file it down?
Thanks for a video. When I started playing guitar in 2016 your channel was one of the first I subscribed to. You were debunking tone wood. Keep up the good work even it is one video once in a while.
The guitar came out great !
As always a fantastic looking guitar man
Weekend Wood. Yep. I remember that stuff. Never thought about building a guitar with it though.
Great video and results Will. The close mic voiceover commentary works really well. Would be great to some more builds presented this way though I appreciate there are a lot of hours and editing involved in producing just 20 mins like this! You seem to have your mojo back these days, good to see 😊
Stoked to hear your album. You have less of the allergies atm it seems. The commentary this way works really well with the video.
The building course is so worth it! I come back to videos before I build something, diagnose some issues, get ideas for templates.
Really enjoyed to watching, guitar looks great too. I'd love to make a guitar body.
It turned out pretty good. Like the paint job a lot. I also like the concept the way you went about coming up with the design then implemented it. Good work.
This reminds me of the creation of the Platypus, venomous claws and all.
It's so relaxing watching this, like the legendary Bob Ross!😀
That looks spectacular 🤘
Very nice, what kind of finish is that? Polyurathane?
automotive paint and clear. it is a urethane
@@WillsEasyGuitar thanks a lot 👍
Happy to see you back again love your videos and your work. Stay healthy as possible.
Absolutely phenomenal build my man! You're very, very talented!
Ho.
Lee.
Sh.....
uh...
THAT'S GREAT!!!!
I'm glad to see you back for even one video. Your body of work has been informative and entertaining.
More to come!
Very cool 👍
It’s great to see you back on the platform will. Can’t wait to see more 👍🏻
Anyone quoting Bob Ross can't be all bad. Sweet build.
Does the Gelvin Guitars username work on new website? I bought some stuff off you in 22. New website login doesn't recognize my email. i can't find where to create new account.
Glad you're back, please do some lives.
it probably doesn't recognize old user names. It was corrupted and I needed to reinstall everything. The accounts are created after purchase.
I’m glad to see your hands are rock steady… no sign of intention tremors!
Good to see you back.
Wow that's a very cool guitar! Tonewood people better look away!
Nice work William. You got mad talent my friend!
thanks holmes. What have you been up to?
@@WillsEasyGuitar not a whole lot. Just working mostly.
