On occasion I have heard those types of comments from part 141 program graduates who somehow equate 4 years of school with less hours needed to be CFIs and less hours needed for RATP minimums as somehow being better/more experience than 61 program grads. I still haven’t figured out how my extra 500 hours of time needed for ATP minimums somehow is inferior but maybe I’m bad at math or something 🤷‍♂️

I have several pilot friends with 30+years experience flying ga, prob around 2,000 hrs total time, some with more. Exceptional pilots. Much of their experience has been gained from years of making go no go decisions, hanger flying with other pilots, dealing with maintenance issues, flying many different types of aircraft, weather and seasons and having a deep understanding of weather. Better SA and ADM than younger guys (like me) Lessons taught over many years are far more valuable than those taught over a short period of time. The brain takes time to soak in what it has learned. They have spent many more thousands of hours on the ground thinking about flying. This is valuable. Also, the type of flying maters. Your not learning much flying an xc with the autopilot on.

A little about my My background: i flew for fun for 7 years, built around 500 hours TT flying VFR locally as well as across the country. Thats where i learned a lot. I then left a lucrative career to pursue an aviation career. i got my instrument, commercial single and multi, CFI, CFII and MEI all in a year. I flight instucted and landed contract gigs flying everything from a C206 to Citations and everything inbetween. i got hired by the airlines with around 2,000tt and now have almost 5,000 hours in almost 40 different airplanes, all within 15 years. The flight instructors and pilots i have learned the most are military aviators, corporate pilots, and airline pilots aka industry professionals.

I agree it looks like people envy the fact that you got it done in a short amount of time. However, flying 8 hours a day in a 172 is not the best idea when it comes to safety. I have an anecdotal experience to share. A former student of mine chose to attend another flight school to build hours as rapidly as possible. Tragically, he lost his life in an accident that, like all aviation accidents, resulted from multiple factors. What struck me the most was that he had been flying intensely, almost every day. This relentless pace likely impaired his judgment. One night, his aircraft experienced an avionics failure, and combined with Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), he lost situational awareness. His fatigue likely played a significant role in his inability to navigate out of the situation, leading to the fatal outcome.

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  2 месяца назад

I definitely do not fly when I’m fatigued and eight hours in a cockpit does not make me fatigued because it’s not eight consecutive hours. I have plenty of breaks during the day as a we landed various airports and I switch from student to another, take lunch, etc…

The problem with that comment is that everybody's saturation point is different. Some people can handle long durations of learning new tasks and concepts while others reach the point of diminishing returns much sooner.
That is why hours doesn't mean a whole lot, what matters more is a person's ability to absorb, process, and retain knowledge and the ability to convert various amounts of short term memory into long term memory.
So yeah, you can be just as well trained and competent at a year and a half or whatever as a person who's been training for twice as long.
There are numerous factors that determine a person's ability to learn and retain knowledge in a short amount of time, both biological and environmental.

  • @ragzpar

The ones flying rarely over many years only tend to fly in the best conditions. They lack experience imo compared to ones flying daily for eight hours as they fly what may and tend to improve their personal minimums and have overcome various scenarios.
I have seen part 141 CFIs struggle to go new airports and do XCs. It’s tough to get them out of their comfort zones (their usual practice areas and usual goto airports).

    It depends on the pilot.
    A) 1500 hour pilot, done very quickly, DOES OR DOESN’T consistently reflect for better performance.
    B) 1500 hour pilot, done at a slow pace, DOES OR DOESN’T consistently reflect for better performance.
1 flight hour DOES NOT always equal 1 flight hour. It depends on how the pilot reflects/interacts on/with that flight hour. Performing to the minimum is just that. The quantitative measure.

I dent remember what it's called but there is a known phenomenon that learning can plateau when doing too much practice at once. For me, I might equally trust the pilot with 1000hrs who did theirs full time as a halftime pilot who kept a regular schedule.
I might trust the half time pilot more who supplemented with study and spent their fewer hours actively flying challenging conditions than the one who cruised and gotterdun!

  • @chusett

I think many critics of these fast zero to hero programs just assume everyone is rushed to all their check rides and barely have enough ground school and overall just fall apart. Which to a degree is true. But at the same time, the individuals that DO get through it and do succeed in a fast accelerated training, they arent any worse or incompetent than another pilot. Because in the end, checkrides still must be passed. And 1 hr = 1 hr.
I will say though perhaps a person that has gone through such fast training may not have seen enough take off or landing scenarios. Compared to a person who flies shorter hrs and makes more flights. 🤷‍♂️
But thats a can of worms I dont think people want to open. Because then we can start nitpicking about the region and weather of some schools. Flying in perfect weather versus more realistic turbulent weather.

Research by Anders Ericsson, a leading expert on expertise, indicates that deliberate practice, which is highly focused and structured, is most effective when done in sessions of 1-2 hours, with breaks in between. Ericsson's work suggests that top performers typically engage in about 4-5 hours of deliberate practice per day, divided into shorter sessions.
Cognitive load theory, posits that human cognitive architecture can be overwhelmed by too much information at once. Studies based on this theory suggest that spreading learning over multiple sessions, rather than cramming, leads to better retention and understanding.
Not saying I agree with the comments saying you're not qualified, I think your cert speaks for itself. But I can see an argument being made against the idea you're presenting in this video specifically. 8hrs a day is not necessarily better than 4hrs a day.

There’s a big difference fm a pilot who is just a technician, than an Aviator obsessed with flight! @@trent_dyrsmid Absolutely love your content. Please keep it up! Would you FaceTime or watch a video while driving? I put making a video while driving, since your eye contact was often on the phone, as contrary to good pilot decision making. My comment was not to be snarky, whatsoever. It was a literal request and recommendation for your safety and those around you. Please reconsider. Even while mounted, using your phone to record or stream video falls under the distracted driving laws. Some states have now specifically included it. It's even now illegal to check your phone directly while stopped in traffic or a red light (OK on integrated vehicle screen). I would like you to be safe and flying/driving for a long time. Would love to fly with you if passing through Houston. Take care!
