    I'm glad I refreshed myself on this technique for the first time in a while. It reminded me of some mistakes I'm still making (namely, trying to hard to see clearly). Even achieved a completely clear moment, with my left eye, 7 lines down on the Snellen chart during this video. I sometimes struggle to see the second row with that eye. Nathan explains this better than anyone I've ever come across.

      Wow great job! Experiencing clear flashes is critical to eventually embodying that type of clear seeing more permanently. The fact that it happened as a result of relaxation and movement should be a big clue for you! Keep it up and keep us in the loop with your process.

    Holy moly. After watching I went to the comments and held my phone just outside the point of legibility. I pretended to read a comment over and over, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. And i could feel my eyes attempting to focus and its causing my sinuses to pop. But sure enough the text is very slowly coming more and more into focus but just not quite there yet.
    Thank you for this, my head hasn't felt this relieved in some time.

      Unfortunately, I haven't really. Things got a little weird later that day. I put my glasses on a couple hours later and got a hard cramp in my left ciliary. And since I've picked up outer eye muscle tension I'm unable to completely get rid of, if I do it just shifts around. And also got posterior vitrius detachment in my other eye mixed with silent migraine symptoms. So it's been a fun time, lol.
      That feeling at the time though felt amazing. And I've learned that I've had a lot more tension for years than I realized

    Aa Aldous Huxley written in his book, others example about how "awareness" tends to fade out without we notice. When we hold a pen for example, our tactile sense will no longer notice the pen after few seconds.. The smelling, after few seconds or so, we can't notice the scent
    The hearing, you can't stop listen to something but it will not call your attention after some seconds (if you are focused in something else, it does not apply to sleeping time) The vision is the only sense that sends us a signal when we are losing its awareness; it gets blur.
    So shift is basically put the awareness into the vision sense again and again and again andagain....
    We can boost this thing by turning on other awareness senses

Thank you again for the clarification will definitly practice it !

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  3 года назад +1

      Just to clarify, Dr. Bates said "constant shifting is necessary to maintain central fixation." Sometimes people see that word "fixation" and think it means "staring", but that is incorrect. There is no need to inhibit your eye movements, the Bates Method actually encourages us to allow our eyes to move freely.

    Please demonstrate the long swing versus the short swing. Thank you.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  2 года назад

      If the Long Swing is approximately a 180 degree swing, the Short Swing might be approximately a 10 degree swing or less. You simply move your body/head less, while still noticing the subtle "oppositional movement" that occurs as a result of your movement. Once you get better at seeing the oppositional movement during the Short Swing, then you can start to look for it while doing the Optical Swing, which is essentially Shifting like I explain in this video. Have fun and stay relaxed!

  • @MindDrip
    @MindDrip 4 года назад +1

    Thank for your work Nathan. I've always been a bit hesitant to perform the shifting exercise because it's kind of confusing. When I do it, it feels like I'm kind of engaging my peripheral vision to simultaneously look at the position I shifted from, while looking at the new position, if that makes any sense. Would you say this is the wrong way to go about it? I don't really see how to go about doing the exercise any other way, because it seems to me that the purpose is to "notice" the world shifting/moving slightly as you move your focus of vision.

    Does the Bates Method help to correct astigmatism? My 5-1/2 year old grandson wears glasses to correct. The optometrist says glasses may help to eliminate the condition; eventually glasses will be needed no longer. Can you comment on the effectiveness of Bates in this case and the use of glasses for correction. (It seems to me that glasses restrict the visual freedom this young and active person has.)

    Hey, I bought your book but unfortunately I bought it before you released the new one.
    The main issue is that’s did the exercises to really work you need to takeoff your glasses at all times but it’s hard for me to see without it in school I can’t take it off while I’m driving I can’t take it off that’s my biggest issue
    My eysight is approximately -2.5 or so
    How bad was your eye sight before you started and how is it now?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад +5

      That's not true, you don't have to take off your glasses at all times... when I was training my own vision I went without my glasses as much as possible, but I still wore them when I needed them to see in the distance, to drive, to work, to socialize, etc. It's not about quitting glasses cold turkey, it's about gradually weaning off them and becoming less dependent on them over time... and also using weaker prescription "training glasses" that are slightly undercorrected to your full prescription. In your case, that might mean -2.25 or -2.00 if you're starting at -2.50. I started around -4.00 when I began and worked my way down to -3.75 glasses, -3.50 glasses, -2.00 glasses, and then no glasses. If you send me an email with a proof of purchase of my book I'll be happy to send you the eBook version of the new edition.

    Listening to you for a few days I realized i never understood anything of the Bates method. Because i didn't find explanations like your before.
    I do the exercises that you explained and get a lot of clear flashes. Also a lot of eye tearing, almost like crying and a burning pain. Is that the muscles not used to work in that way? Is it a good sign?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад +2

      That's good to hear, because the Bates Method is often misunderstood as just "eye exercises" and one of my goals is to share the actual original Bates Method as it was taught by Dr. Bates himself. It's awesome that you're experiencing clear flashes, that's a sign that it's working. And it's normal to feel some strange sensations when you're first re-learning how to see clearly again. Like you said, those eye muscles have been dormant for a while, so when they wake back up and start working again it can feel odd. Stick with it and it'll feel more normal and more relaxed!

    Hey Nathan! Quick question - If I am shifting with nice soft shifts and I get a very slight clear flash should i blink or should I try to hold that blink and make that clear flash clearer by even more shifting and holding my blink? Am I trying to hold that stinging sensation in my eye for better results?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад

      Jag, it's important to learn how to blink through the clear flashes without them disappearing. Do not be afraid to blink when you get a clear flash. And actually, blinking is a powerful way to bring a clear flash. Watch my video on blinking and reverse blinking for more on that - ruclips.net/video/GwwphDB6Ze0/видео.html - and although the stinging sensation is often a normal accompaniment to clear flashes at first, it's not really about holding onto that feeling... we want our eyes to feel soft and comfortable, not stingy.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  2 года назад

      Yes, technically it's sort of impossible to not be shifting (unless you have a very strong staring habit that slows down the shifting significantly)... but what most people are not aware of is the "oppositional movement" that occurs as a result of our constant eye movements. So by bringing our awareness to seeing things moving all day long, it keeps us present, connected to our surroundings, and allows central fixation to occur and sustain.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад +1

      I doubt the vision problem is just from sweat getting in your eyes. When you say telephone do you mean looking at a smartphone screen? Because it could be linked to excessive screen time on a phone, tablet, or computer and not giving your eyes enough rest time. Smoking cigarettes is not only bad for general health, but the smoke can irritate the eyes and lead to dryness. You could try doing a cold compress, when you soak a washcloth in icy cold water and lay it over your closed eyes... could relieve the burning and dry sensations.

    I have a question. I’ve been reading Bates book, and have been doing a lot of palming and shifting, but I can never see images in my mind with my eyes closed. I can’t look at an image, letter or a period and then close my eyes and hold onto it for more than a second. Am i the only one? How do i fix this?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  3 года назад +1

      When your eyes are open and you are attempting to see something clearly, the harder you try, the harder it gets. A very similar thing happens when your eyes are closed and you are attempting to visualize something clearly... It's a little paradoxical, but the less you try to visualize, the more images you start to receive. Have you tried utilizing your other senses to help? Some people are visual, others are auditory, others are kinesthetic. With your eyes closed, say the letter out loud, so you "hear" the letter instead of just "seeing" the letter. If you are visualizing a nature scene, see if you can imagine the sounds of the birds, or the texture of the bark on the trees, or the smell of the flowers, or the taste of an apple you pick off a tree. Sometimes when you're more focused on your other senses, a mental picture will appear more easily.

    Dear Nathan, when we are reading, for example, are the eyes alone supposed to be shifting back and forth, or should the eyes be relatively still and our head does the back and forth movement? I guess this is really a question about shifting in general - does the head or eyes do the shifting? Thanks in advance! :)

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  3 года назад +1

      Both! Instead of your head staying still and just your eyes moving, or your eyes staying still and just your head moving, it's a combination. Ultimately it is your mind that leads the way, with your mental attention and interest making its way across the page/screen from left to right. Then it is about allowing your eyes and head to follow along easily and effortlessly. I like to pivot my head as I read and allow my eyes to stay nice and soft so they can shift rapidly. I let the act of reading take care of the shifting for me!

    Hello Nathan...I have a question...
    Will not wearing our spects for most of the time... will it help in improve our eyesight...??

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад

      Yes, when working on improving your own eyes' ability to learn how to focus again without the help of artificial lenses, it is beneficial to spend time without any glasses or contacts on. Some people also like to use weaker prescription training glasses to help wean off their original strength glasses instead of "quitting cold turkey".
      Keep in mind that it will only work if you are relaxed though. If you strain at all without glasses or with weaker glasses, your vision will not improve.

    • @NathanOxenfeld

      The Bates Method is ideally done without glasses or contacts, but many of the good vision habits can still be practiced/maintained even when you have glasses on. It's meant to be a 24/7 kind of thing, whether you have glasses on or off, if that makes sense.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад

      Yes, the blindfold is a nice supplement to palming but not a sufficient replacement because it lacks the human connection... the skin to skin contact of your hands on your face can transmit a powerful healing aspect that a blindfold might not... so I encourage you to do both.

    One of the eye exercise s : Focus far,then focus near...and your method is contradiction....so which one is right??

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад +1

      There is no contradiction... you're simply describing near to far shifting, which is partly what this video is about. The main difference is that my approach to teaching near to far shifting is more relaxation-based rather than exercise-based. Do not treat it like an "exercise" to strengthen your muscles or anything... instead think of it as a habit that infuses into your everyday activities. For example, if you have to work on a computer for 3 hours, don't focus on the screen for the entire 3 hours... glance up and away from your screen very frequently for short breaks to let your eyes readjust their focus in the distance, and then come back to the screen. Think about what other daily activities encourage effortless and automatic near-to-far shifting. Driving is a good example, because you are constantly shifting from your dashboard to the road ahead, checking your mirrors, etc. What's important though is to identify the activities that don't include as much near-to-far shifting innately... like computers, phones, and books, which sometimes lead us into staring at the same distance for too long. Even the time it took you to read this entire comment is too long to focus at one distance... if you look at something farther or closer than your screen at the end of each sentence (even if for only one second), you train your subconscious to get into the habit of doing that automatically without having to constantly remind yourself... but it takes time. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      Thanks

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад

      You should re-watch it because reversing astigmatism is not about "exercises", it's about recognizing where your functional/muscular imbalances are and finding more alignment in your daily activities. All the general Bates Method practices like swinging, sunning, palming, centralizing, etc. benefit astigmatism, but don't think that you can "exercise" the astigmatism out of your eyes. It is that type of strain that probably caused the astigmatism, so it's actually a matter of prioritizing dynamic relaxation and releasing the strain and tension that exists in and around your eyes.

    if i read a passage ,which is in a column , from a distance , is it shifting as i go on to read?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, shifting happens when you read... but your job is to become more aware of the apparent "oppositional movement" of the letters and words moving to the left as your eyes shift to the right.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  5 лет назад +2

      I'm not sure if I fully understand your question... could you reword it for me? Shifting can be done on the entire Snellen eye chart. I'd recommend doing it at all different distances... very close, within arm's length, at a moderate distance beyond arm's length, and even further too. Just notice that the point you just shifted from (the letter you're no longer looking at) looks less clear, less black, less distinct, than the letter you just shifted to (the letter you are looking at). This is centralization.

    • @NathanOxenfeld

      You may experience flashes of 20/20 vision in a very short period of time, but it may take a little longer to learn how to maintain 20/20 permanently. Be patient with it and just keep working on cultivating and allowing temporary improvements in the short term, and it'll only be a matter of time before they start lasting longer and appearing more frequently.

    Can you show what shifting look like?

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад

      Shifting is simply the physical movement of your eyes. Shifting can either be a pursuit eye movement or a saccadic eye movement - ruclips.net/video/rRDDKKqkdTg/видео.html - but it's tricky because we can have both voluntary and involuntary shifting. Dr. Bates advocated involuntary shifting, but mentioned that we sometimes need to practice voluntary shifting first in order to achieve involuntary shifting.
