- Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs battle it out in a back and forth playoff game. This was Game 2 of the WCSF series from 1998. Stockton, Malone, and Hornacek vs David Robinson and a Rookie Tim Duncan. Enjoy.

Jazz fan here. Thanks for posting this. The 97-98 Jazz eliminated the Kobe-Shaq Lakers (twice), the Drexler-Barkley-Olajawon Rockets (twice), and these Spurs before falling to the Bulls (twice). Those were the only teams to win an NBA title between 1991 and 2003. Holy cow!
Would love to see the Jazz get one this year. Hopefully with a full capacity crowd by the Finals
Excellent point. The 1997 and 1998 Utah Jazz beat all of the teams who won championships over that 12-year span except the Bulls. I always felt the Jazz were the better team against the Bulls both years and although they didn't beat the Bulls, I'm super proud to be a John Stockton and Karl Malone fan because they are true Champions because they never gave up, they always came back year after year again and again and defied all the odds. They are the oldest starting players ever to reach the NBA Finals for their first time. At their 12 and 13 year marks in the NBA when they reached the 1997 Finals most legends are retiring at their 12th and 13th years whereas in comparison Stockton and Malone were leading the Jazz to the Finals at the same point in their careers. Not to mention they each played 19 seasons and played at All-Star levels every single season. Non one ever played longer and stronger than Stockton and Malone.
1997 and 1998 Utah Jazz went 7-1 against the Shaq-Kobe Lakers in 2 playoff series, 4-1 against the Robinson-Duncan S.A. Spurs in 1 playoff series, 7-4 against Olajuwon-Barkley-Drexler Houston Rockets in 2 playoff series, and 4-8 against the Chicago Bulls in 2 NBA Finals playoff series with 6 of those 8 losses being decided in the last seconds. The Jazz beat all the teams in these 2 years who won the championships from 1991 until 2003 except the Bulls. This makes the Stockton and Malone and Hornacek 1997 and 1998 Utah Jazz team one of the greatest in history.
And if Utah won Game 6 against Chicago in '98, that would have forced a Game 7 at home with a Scottie Pippen who had a hurt back and a Michael Jordan who was exhausted. The Jazz probably would have won Game 7 and the championship. Very competitive series with the Bulls both years. Great basketball between the 2 very competitive teams.

Jordan's Bulls
Hakeem's Rockets
Duncan's Spurs
Shaq's Lakers.
In their playoff runs in 97-98, the Jazz went head to head with all of them, and came out with a record of 5-2 in the series and 26-14 in the individual playoff games.
He faced a rookie Duncan, declining Hakeem, and pre-Phil Lakers, so it didn't count
They wouldn't have beaten the Spurs in this one, if the Spurs had Sean Elliott.

@@ericruiz1036 Spurs were literally 1 possession away from winning each of the 1st 2 games in Utah. Then they absolutely annihilated the Jazz by like 30+pts is in Game 3. It was kind of too late at that point, aside from the Spurs still being w/o Sean Elliott. I know there's chaos theory, but to me, Sean Elliott as an elite wing (not mega superstar or anything), is worth way more than just 1 possession. Throw Sean in there, and it's basically the same Spurs team that won the title the next yr, and this series was much closer than your typical gentleman's sweep. Without getting at least 1 of those 1st 2 games @ Delta Center, the way those games ended, Spurs had really no chance.

Sometimes fans forget that all 19 years in row Duncan’s career he made playoffs. Very rare now for any superstar now.
Stockton and Malone never missed the Playoffs either.
Even in this rewind you can tell Duncan is playing Center position as David Robinson plays against Karl Malone and Duncan defends Greg Foster at Center position.
I think it was more a matter of the particular matchup rather than a position switch. Malone used to defend the likes of O'neal, Robinson or Longley while sharing the court with Greg Foster or Antoine Carr too.
Actually they started Duncan at the 3 at this point. He starts defensively on Russell but as Will Perdue (starter next to Robinson and Duncan) doesn't get as many minutes he switches to the "Big-Matchup"

Exactly, Malone had to go up against Phil Jackson but Duncan had to see Phil Jackson almost every year in the Western Conference. Yet Duncan did get past him once, more than Malone did.

Hum ...He came into the league in 97 and played against Malone at his best obviously (MVP 97 and 99), then He faced the Shaq (Duncan often played center) in his prime and was the only player who could resist him. Then, in the 00's, he played against Garnett and Nowitski (2 future all of famers) at their best, plus very great other pf such as Webber, Rasheed Wallace, Jermaine O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire etc. I think he would have dominated the same way in the 90's, had he been born 10 years sooner.

That's revisionist history, the majority didn't take Portland seriously until they had a 3-1 lead against Utah, and even then some thought they would've blown the lead. Did you forget that Duncan had a tough time getting past the Lakers when Phil Jackson was the coach there. He didn't have it easy at all.

ballhandling too. Duncan will occasionally run the break & can drive to the bucket using either hand, things Malone couldn't do. His drives consistent of bulling his way into/through defenders & getting to the line.
Brian Grant was tough as nails. He could've played in any era. Davis too, my point is these guys had the strength & skill to guard any 4 or 5 & at least hold their own. If they weren't all-star players so what? I listed 5 perennial all-star PF's before I mentioned them. The whole reason the West was dominant over the East from 1999-2004 was the amazing collection of big men in the conference, and Duncan was the best of the bunch.
I wish utah could of won at least one ring in the 90s THEY had hot players and a coach

The Mavericks had a superstar PF, the Timberwolves had a superstar PF, the Suns had a superstar PF, even the Pistons had an All-Star caliber PF at the time. If anything Shaq played against nobody, he didn't make the first team until the Knicks and Rockets fell off in the late 90's and the Spurs go-to scorer was Tim Duncan.

Duncan debuted during the 1998 season and played well against veteran forwards like Malone, Barkley, Oakley, and McDyess. While Barkley, Malone and McHale are great forwards, I still put Duncan ahead of Barkley and McHale. Overall Malone's numbers are far more impressive but Duncan is also a very clutch player and Malone struggled with consistency during the both the 97 and 98 finals. Also, Tim Duncan did have some legit talent to match up against such as Garnett, Webber, Wallace.
Alamo Ranger Dennis Rodman was just so good, he gave Malone fits. If you replaced him with anyone else he probably would've did amazing.
Duncan was already NBA ready by his 3rd year at Wake Forest and he only kept getting better from there. He's a once in a life time type of star so of course he was going to be able to match up well with NBA bigs right away.
He smacked Shaq in 99 for playing against 8th seed Knicks, smacked Shaq again (Plus Kobe) for playing against barely mediocre Nets, killed Amare&Nash's Suns with 26-13 4blk for playing against subpart Cavs. You've mentioned about missing layup but you forgot Duncan played 30-17 in game 6 and 24-12-4 stl in game 7 although HE WAS 37 YEARS OLD

@AnEn Yeah, Duncan was sometimes carried by clutch role players on the big stage, like Steve Kerr, Mario Elie, Big/Cheap Shot Bob, Bruce Bowen, Kawhi Leonard & the likes, but he was definitely the anchor that kept putting his teams in positions to succeed.
Malone was the MVP in '99 yet got shut down against Portland, while Duncan torched them in the WCF 4-0. Don't just blame the Bulls, the Jazz were the favorites against the Blazers and '99 and Malone couldn't get the job done. In the elimination game the MVP scored only 8 points lol.
Duncan had a game against Portland in the 1999 playoffs where he had 5 points. The Spurs still won, which indicates that the Blazers could hold Duncan down and the Spurs would still beat them.
Further, Duncan averaged 16.8 points and 9.8 rebounds against the Spurs in the 1999 playoffs. Not exactly historic or superstar numbers, despite your rhetoric.
Malone? Averaged 20.2 points and 11.5 rebounds against the Blazers in the 1999 playoffs.
They lost Horace Grant that year, which made them a weaker rebounding team. Jordan coming back saved their season but their PF weakness showed in the playoffs that year.

Duncan is a PF.. David Robinson was the starting Center from his rookie year in 1997 until he retired in 2003. Then from 2004-2006, Rasho Nesterovic started at Center for the Spurs. Then fro 2007-2010, Fabricio Oberto started at Center for the Spurs. Both of those guys are nothing close to PF's. The only time Duncan has played Center was 2010-2012, when the Spurs didn't really have a legit starting Center on the roster. Finally, Splitter was ready to start in 2012 after a couple years of development, and he's been starting at Center ever since.
Duncan is a PF who is capable of playing C. Similar to Chris Bosh for Miami the past 3 seasons. Bosh is a PF, but he started at C a ton for Miami when Lebron was there. Just because he's capable of playing the position, doesn't mean he's a Center. Duncan is a true PF.
Difference w/ Bosh though, was/is that his game would never be mistaken for a 5-- he plays out on the perimeter like true 4s do. The boxscore position labels and those bigs u name don't fool me, we all know who was controlling the deep post at both ends.

Also when he lost in the 1st round on the Lakers the team had a worse roster than the Bulls in '95 did. Phil Jackson doesn't necessarily know how to build a team from the ground up but he knows how to control egos. Before he showed up the Lakers were an immature team that had a 1-12 record in series where they were eliminated.

When jazz got rid of Morris in 1999 they fucked up. When they got hornyseck, new stadium, esley, sanden Anderson, ostertag, Morris that was there last chance and only chance from 1997-1999. Had they kept Morris in 1999 they would have had better chance. Technically the only season that the Utah jazz could actually win the NBA finals was the 99 season and they blew it. The problem is that these kids like yourself keep watching youtube videos instead of real basketball of 80 and 90s. Jordan played against 18 of the 50 greatest players of all time (like Malone). MJ was not just shooting guard. He was way more than that. Duncan and the others were doing NOTHING at that time. People like to increase the value of the 2000s in which we had no viewers, no hall of famers (just a few) and scorers. Duncan did it great but Malone did for 19 years with excellence.

Duncan came in 00's when there was NO huge talents in PF like Malone, Barkley, McHale and goods like Johnson, Kemp, Oakley. Duncan played against nobody. If rings meant talent Steve Kerr would be a genious while Isiah, Hardaway, Stockton and Payton would be "ordinary".
Kevin Garnett, Pau Gasol, Chris Bosh & Chris Webber weren't huge talents? I love 80s & 90s brand of basketball the most too, but Duncan meant every bit to the Spurs what Bird meant to the Celtics.

Btw, I just watched game 6 of the 1997 Finals. The Bulls eked that win out off of multiple Pippen goaltends -- uncalled -- and Jordan kicking Stockton's leg out from under him so he couldn't rotate back to Kerr on the go-ahead shot.

Well Duncan guarded Shaq plenty, and since no PF on the Lakers could guard Duncan, Phil Jackson was forced to put Shaq on him & they still couldn't stop him. No good bigs when Duncan emerged? That's just plain wrong: Chris Webber, Rasheed Wallace, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Alonzo Mourning, Brian Grant, Antonio Davis & Anthony Mason made all-star, Antonio McDyess was an athletic specimen, Kemp was with Cavs/Blazers, Bo Outlaw was a great defender, Marcus Camby, Dale Davis, Robert Horry, etc.
Duncan had a huge problem with being able to get buckets at the end of big playoff games. He just could never score consistently like guys like Shaq , jordan, lebron, Kobe, bird, Olajuwon, magic, Kareem . He’s a great great player but he’s a step below those guys. He needed Parker and ginobli to be the offense in big games down the stretch. U just could not go to Duncan at the end of games to get buckets.. I watched every game he played in the playoffs almost n that was a glaring problem with him.. but he’s definitely a all time great player
Take off the blind glasses, Duncan went up against plenty 1st/2nd Team All NBA PF's when he won his championships, what about Shaq? No one was saying Portland was better until after the series was over. Portland had zero superstars on that team.

LOL Malone constantly lost in the 1st round in his prime even when he had HCA. Duncan didn't lose in the 1st round until 2009.

Duncan also was drafted onto a team that, when healthy, had been winning between 55-60 games in the mid-90s.
Furthermore, when Duncan did lose in the first round, it was historic: one of only three western 1st seeds in the entire history of thr league to lose the opening round series.
This happened in 2011.
Duncan also played absolutely horribly in that series -- far worse than numbers you'll find from Malone in any of his first round series (particularly through his prime -- to the extent that Duncan was basically humiliated by a frontline of Gasol and Randolph.
The Spurs certainly had better roster depth than, say, the Jazz of the late 80s or early 90s in their 2009-2011 incarnations. That's also a rather key detail.

In what ways was Malone better than Timmy, scoring? That's it. To me it's not that much of an advantage because Duncan can score in more ways than Malone, especially regarding post moves. Malone was a volume shooter who ran the floor better than anyone his size and proved that hard work can overcome lack of superstar talent/athleticism. Didn't pass, rebound, or block shots nearly at Ducan's level.
David Stelter I think Duncan's style was more effective for his era, the funny thing is, this is a rookie Tim Duncan and he won the finals the following year.

Did you even watch any of this...Stockton made two passes to Malone...One for a 20 foot jumper..and one on a pick and roll where Malone drove to the basket in traffic against Robinson for a score and a foul. Nothing about it was spoon-fed. All of it was created by Malone. Those were routine passes that Malone turned them into assists. I think Malone made Stockton look better a lot more than vice versa.

1998 is the only time a Duncan led team faced Stockton and Malone in the playoffs and they lost. Then there was the lockout season in 1999 which screwed a lot of things up for multiple teams and that Jazz core kept getting older and older from there yet remained in the playoffs every year.

In all fairness, I felt that Michael Finley was robbed, similar to how Dominique Wilkins was robbed in the 88 contest, cause it was in Chicago. I think that a lot judges were amazed to see a white man be able to take off from the free throw line to dunk, like Doctor J, Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen, similar to how so many were amazed in the 86 dunk contest to see a 5'6 guy in Spud Webb being able to dunk w/ actually some style, so Nique got robbed then too. Heck, Clyde The Glide Drexler who was a fabulous in-game dunker, could not perform the dunk from the free throw line in the dunk contest when he tried it. I still feel that both Nique & Finley's windmills from the baseline had more impressive creativity, w/ still decent distance, more impressive overall acrobatics & spins, plus nice power, so I would've rated those a hair higher than the free throw ones w/ a running start, as impressive as that feat is in of itself to be able to do. Of the successful dunks from the free throw line, I like Jordan's the best, cause he had the nicest hang-time of the 3 that have done it, and most grace. Maybe another's done it, but those are the only 3 that I remember. Overall though, Vince Carter to me is the greatest dunker that's ever lived, dunk contest & in-game combined. If it's just in-game, I'd go w/ Shawn Kemp. If we're only talking about white in-game dunkers though, I'd go w/ Tom Chambers.
