I know this is an old video. I just put a Standard Grip Cutting Mat on top of my scan n cut mat. "NO CUTTING OUT! The mat saves my brother scan n cut mat from scratches and getting waisted. My mat stays like new. I love it I also stock up on these mats. I also purchase the circuit cutting mats it works just as well. What I need is a 12 by 24 mat.
Oh my gosh. This is brilliant! I don't like the Brother mats at all. I never would have thought of this. Thanks for sharing. And I love the name of your series, "Jeff plays with stuff." You and Miss Kate are awesome!
OMG, I am doing this tonight! What a fantastic idea. I hate that the BSC mats don't last. What a great supportive husband. You guys are great crafters.
I’m a Zig two way glue user. The jumbo tube has a 1/2 inch wide applicator that is super easy to apply evenly -just let it dry until it is transparent. I think you might not have gotten the best outline cut because of the transparency of the Miss Kate mat and perhaps a bit of shadow between the mat and the white paper below. The packing tape will probably last forever. That’s what I use to ‘heal’ cuts thru the mat. I loved your video. I held my breath when you put the paper under the mat. Seeing it shoot out the back was a revelation. TFS
hi there Jeff I've had lots of time with scan and cut you had a problem with cutting outside your finger so what you do is scan it to save pick first option one line save restart go to saved object bring it on screen should be just outside cut line all you do is shrink it to inside line easy thank you for mat showing good Dave
There is actually a feature on the ScanNCut to cut inside (or outside, which is how the border would have been added to the sticker image in the first place) of the scanned image so many points, by using the minus setting. Even the way you did it though would have been perfect, if you had recalibrated the positioning in the settings of your machine, it is obviously a little off in your machine (which they have a tendency to do, from time to time)....
Omg.. I was so nervous as you were cutting the mat. Thinking to myself. Hope it works🤞. I think I saw that video you are referring to of Ken creations. I think he glued it in top of an old mat If any body is going to try this, my suggestion is to put a white stockpaper or whit mat underneath clear red mat before taping it.. by the way.. I just want to say, I have been using the mat my machine came with for over two years 1/2 now and it still sticky and it works fine. What I do is, after every use is wipe down with clean moist paper towel Or babywipe, Scrape any remaining excess paper from project from the mat , let it dry and cover with clear sheet it came with . if my mat is losing it's stiicky, after wiping it down with baby wipes or moist paper towels and scrapes any remaining excess paper. I let it dry, then applying the Ziggy 2 way glue. I only apply glue only on the grind square line its recommend to not go over it, then let dry for at least 15 mints, cover it with your clear sheet. Boom! You have a sticky mat. All over again!. Warning the first few time after using the Ziggy glue. Mat will be super sticky. There are a few tutorials out there. For Me personally in these two 1/2 years. I only had to the Ziggy 2way glue 3 times on same old mat. The glue does stay for a long time.
Thank you for the great info! I just ordered my glue I can’t wait. The mats from sac don’t last and I need to hold down my fabric it’s a total mess when I try to cut it so I have to cut it out myself.
Thanks, Loretta! I really give Ken credit for the idea, I just did it a little different. I don't know what way is better. My way seemed like a fun challenge for me. -Jeff
hmm, since we have all cut into our scan n cut mats at one time or another, and had to patch it up, I ask why didn't you just put your mat in and let the scan n cut cut out the square for you?.... or, since I haven't tried it, won't it cut that far? I haven't seen Ken's video either, but I think he just taped it on. To clean my mats, ... or re stick them rather, I just use a baby wipe and clean it to some degree of happiness, then I apply that zig double sided ????? glue, leave it for as long as possible, then if it is too tacky, I just roll a man's singlet (old one of course) in my hand and rub hard on the mat, I have mats crappier than yours and that has worked well for me. :) great ideas though, it helps to share as what works for one, may not for another, thank you for sharing your video...:)
First time on your channel. Very helpful. I don't think I dare, but it was brave and it worked...Lol Great job! I really DIG MissKateCuttables, so I am super happy I found the channel. Look forward to watching more videos. New subbie for sure. Thanks so much for sharing. Arlene
Thanks for doing this. I had been looking for that video of Ken’s also and I couldn’t find it. I think he may have glued one mat on top of the other. I was wondering if that would make it too thick though. Just got my first Miss Kate matand and will be trying it soon. I don’t like the scan and cut mats even when they’re new.
Thanks for your comment! This worked great. I don't know how long the tape will hold up but that is easy to replace if you keep an eye on it! Let me know if works for you! -Jeff
Great idea. I wanted the new SNC, but I recently found out about Silhouette’s PixScan feature which does the scan and cut. I’m curious how good it is. Have you ever tried it? I would love to see videos on this from you guys! 😀
Hi Beth, I have both the Brother Scan n Cut (original machine) and a Silhouette Curio that uses the Pixscan feature. I find that Pixscan is more flexible as you create the cutting lines in the Silhouette software and so you are able to manipulate the image as much as you need before sending the cut file to the machine. The Brother Scan n Cut scans the image into the machine in two ways, either direct cut, which gives you only limited ability to manipulate the cut line, or scan to cut data which scans the image before saving to open in your software for further manipulation. Direct cut is good for stamped images instead of buying matching dies for your stamps and you can create an offset to mimic the cut you get from the matching dies. Which is better? Well it really depends on what you want from your machine, Brothers direct cut function is quick if you don’t want to mess with the cut line, but I do like Silhouettes software better than Brothers. Hope that’s of some help!
Beverley Hollis - Wow! Thanks for your response! Good to know. I will play around with the pixscan. I’m still learning the ins and outs of the silhouette coming from the Cricut. Although I find the design space software to be easier and more intuitive, I believe silhouette studio offers so much more! Now if I can just learn it all. Lol! Thanks again!
well that is one way to do it... you could always just wash your mat, and then use ek Tools Zig stick glue. Wet is permanent and dry is not. So you can just apply - let it dry and wala - good as new mat.
I had to laugh when I saw all the work you put into keep using your Scan N Cut mat. Here's the secret. The only symbols that are scanned by the machine are the 2 little black dots on each side of the top and bottom of the mat. All I have to do is glue, with a few strips of double sided tape, an intact Cricut mat, (available on Amazon for 3 for $14.97) on the grid lines. Fits perfectly. These mats are a lot more durable than the skimpy mats that Brother puts out. They're a rip off if you ask me. I've told them this, but they don't care. So I've purchased my last Scan N Cut mat. I've got lots of useless ones that I can use with the Cricut, or any other one that might fit within the margins of the Brother's mat. Try it! You'll see! The only adjustment you might have to make might be the needle depth, but so far I haven't had to do so. Millie
Ok, I just saw this and appreciate the video and effort into what he was doing. But why did he have the shifty eyes like he was going to get in trouble. 😂😂😂
Nice video but why U did this? Why do you cut your mate? I live in Brazil and all supplies for my scanncut are much expansive. Here we clean up and Re sticks with glue. You can use a 3m spray glue or a water based liquid glue. To clean up as a friend here already sent the tip, baby wipes are great. If you want to see the step by step try to make a search in Portuguese. Use this “como limpar esteira scanncut” to see how to clean up and “como aplicar cola esteira scanncut” to see how to re stick with glue. I use the same mate on past 3 years.
Try changing the settings for the cutting to no border(in the machines language ) and it should work thanks for this just bought the scan n cut also have the silhouette but for cutting out my stamped images this was great but I know the stickiness wears off...going to try the Kates!!!!
KMSCRAP! You are very observant! Yes, it picked up the Miss Kate logo and I had to figure out how to isolate my sticker. I cut out about 10 minutes of me unsuccessfully playing with settings and left in what worked. This is was the first time I had ever really used the machine. Thanks so much for watching! -Jeff
You don't have a SCANNING MAT. OK, The scanner uses a BORDER not a photo. Put the photo on the cutting mat.. then scotch tape a bigger piece of acitate on it on the top side. Then use a sharpie to OUTLINE what you want to cut out of the photo on the acitate. THEN put a bit of white card or paper UNDER the acitate hiding the photo, so the scan can only see our sharpie outline NOT THE PHOTO. THEN 'scan to cut' on the machine.... let it do it to recognise the OUTLINE... then remove the acitate and the white card so the machine can only cut your picture. Send it through to CUT. it will now cut the outline that you drew with the sharpie upon the photo that was on the mat to begin with. It will cut out the 'sharpie' lines that you drew on your photo now. See.. it's that simple. It's DONE!
Ken just stuck his to the top. I think it is worth mentioning that this ONLY works on the Older Scan N Cut 2 or before. The new Scan N Cut DX this hack does not work.
WILL have to try this, but why dont' you guys make one for brother machine so we don't have to go through the hassle of doing this?
I just put a cricut mat on top of the scan n cut mat with double sided adhesive, works like a charm.
magoo181 will try that. Thanks

Terry! Thanks so much! Let me know how it works! -Jeff
This is brilliant! I laughed all the way! This is what crafters do - PLAY and you made us all feel so much better about it. Thanks for sharing
Hi Sylvia! Thanks so much! I have way too much fun playing with this stuff! -Jeff
I’m a Zig two way glue user. The jumbo tube has a 1/2 inch wide applicator that is super easy to apply evenly -just let it dry until it is transparent. I assume its a CM machine, not a DX with the auto blade correct??
hi there Jeff I've had lots of time with scan and cut you had a problem with cutting outside your finger

thank you for mat showing good Dave
my brand new Scan and Cut mat was lousy. I had to use tape to hold things on it right away. And its supposed to be the sticky mat. Awesome fix.
There is actually a feature on the ScanNCut to cut inside (or outside, which is how the border would have been added to the sticker image in the first place) of the scanned image so many points, by using the minus setting. What fun was this today watching you doing your experiment? So entertaining and fun TFS - I do not have a Brother Scan and Cut

perfect instructions with clarity, thank you

Lol I so love that you guys are on RUclips great to see the faces to match all of your great work you do. Smoochez Gloria
Gloria! Thanks so so much! We are loving this new RUclips thing! -Jeff
IT IS SUCH A GREAT TIP!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! It is simple and easy!
KEN! Thanks for the inspiration! We need to do a collaboration video on trying to hack the Scan n Cut DX mat! -Jeff
Great job being an inventor.
Thanks, Loretta! I really give Ken credit for the idea, I just did it a little different. I don't know what way is better. My way seemed like a fun challenge for me. -Jeff
I seriously enjoyed this video.

I, like many others, am a visual learner. Can you make a video since you have better ideas?

I use krylon easy tack adhesive spray if it loses the stickiness
That is SO Brilliant!
I did it and it worked!!! Thanks!!!
I’m a newbie and want a Scan and Cut any recommendation on which to buy. Please help 😂😂

Millie Taylor do you have a picture you could share? Your method sounds so much easier lol
can anyone please help me my scan n cut mat bent from top left side so its not loading now what i can do
Thank you so much for doing this. The brother mats are awful. Thank you once again.
Hi, Monica! Thanks for watching! -Jeff
Ok, I just saw this and appreciate the video and effort into what he was doing. But why did he have the shifty eyes like he was going to get in trouble. 😂😂😂
Hi Jeff. I don’t have a brother scam n cut, but I watched anyway. You are so funny! Thanks, Katz Baugh
Hi Katz! Thanks so much! Stay away from those Scam n Cut machines! ;) You are awesome! -Jeff
Thank you, I will try this!
Thanks for doing this appreciate the video
funny how I did the same thing,,,lol....I just cut the top and bottom straight across...and taped it to the mate piece I wanted to use..it is easier
Try your mat wit Zig glue memory. Watch other you tube videos. It’s amazing
so.... now that you've successfully hacked the mat issue, are you going to start making replacement blades? Keep Playing With Stuff!!
Lee O! Thanks! I have thought about making blades but was not sure if there was enough demand.
Yes we could use replacement blades
What if you photocopied the mat paper 🤔
Nice video but why U did this? Why do you cut your mate? I live in Brazil and all supplies for my scanncut are much expansive. Here we clean up and Re sticks with glue. You can use a 3m spray glue or a water based liquid glue. To clean up as a friend here already sent the tip, baby wipes are great. Have you tried the deep cut of scan n cut to use in a thin metal plate?
Try changing the settings for the cutting to no border(in the machines language ) and it should work thanks for this just bought the scan n cut also have the silhouette but for cutting out my stamped images this was great but I know the stickiness wears off...going to try the Kates!!!!
Next time you cut a sticker, take a pencil and out line were you want it to cut. Then erase the pencil line when you are done, with a white eraser.
When you scanned before putting down the piece of paper, did it pick up the logo on the mat?
It's DONE!
love my cm250
Ken went missing shortly after he posted the video on how to make your own mat.
Ken just stuck his to the top. I think it is worth mentioning that this ONLY works on the Older Scan N Cut 2 or before. The new Scan N Cut DX this hack does not work.
Well that's no fun. The new mats are even worst.
Love the ideas but quicker to cut by hand lol
See Below... You are tring to make a CUTTING MAT into a SCANNING MAT. See below!
Cool
Oh my goodness, you are too funny
Dad you need to credit the artist you got the sicker from
I totally agree! The artist is amazing, I just don't know who it was. Maybe the artist should have stamped their name on the back.
A new brother mat is under $20. Smh.
Your mat stick
Omg you have just and remick
