As in U2 fan since Unforgettable Fire in 1984(yes I am old), this is the only cover of any of their songs that in my opinion elevated the track. I absolutely love the fact that Jack had the balls to take this song apart, lay all the pieces on the table, put it back together, and make it feel *unmistakably* like his original work while somehow *still* tipping his hat to the original. Hardly anyone is capable of doing that effectively. He nailed this. The first time I heard this cover was in a movie theater in the trailer for Great Gatsby. I bought the album while I was still sitting in the movie theater.
Thx for the heartfelt comment - perceptive and mostly accurate. I agree on the vocal parts, etc...But when Edge, say on the Sydney recording, takes the solo, I don't think that's surpassed...still a creditable cover (that he had the balls to do).
@@btragal This track live from the Sydney show is absolutely the peak. Completely agree with you. I was referring to the studio versions. I should have been more specific. But I find that to be the case about all of U2’s work. They’re one of the best live bands ever. Especially during the 80s and 90s. Nobody could touch them.
This is one of my U2 favourite songs (I even saw them playing live). I've always been in love with this song. U2 interpretation shows sadness. Jack White's version is haunting. It may not be for everybody's taste. For me his version his out of this world.
Massive U2 fan also and this was always the high point of the Zoo TV shows for me and while I dont mind this cover and think he done a great job, for me, The Damn Truth version is the cover to trump any, it is raw and passionate and sung with absolute conviction and omg her voice...... completely nails it and makes it her own. you can find it here ruclips.net/video/kvuH5qijOBo/видео.html have a listen as love to know what you think
Aidan Arevalo , saw him in Pittsburgh a few days after NY. I always say once you see Jack White live, you will never miss an opportunity to see him again , not if you can help it. He is that GOOD!
Thanks. Saw your U2 version from Sphere, that's awesome too. Never get tired of this song. I also really wanted to see and capture I'm Shakin' this night but he didn't do it 🙂

100%. Big U2 fan. This version makes me forget the original version. Feels like a Hendrix “Watchtower” moment. Full ownership of the song. Goosebumps.
i was there, i still can’t believe how hard he shreds on acoustic strings. it was one of the most amazing concerts i’ve been too
It’s a that new-ish fender that can bounce back and forth

They’re electric strings. The guitar is electric that makes emulated acoustic guitar sounds with its pickup selector switch.
I 🙏 to hear this song at the many shows I attended this tour after he did it here... he never played it again. so happy you took this video. ❤
