Hello Kev! Over the past few months, I've been faithfully studying your amazing videos and have tried my best to implement all the pieces of golden advice you have sprinkled, so generously, throughout your videos. Today, I populated my first ever small pond with 4 freshwater shrimps, and although it is too early to tell; I feel immensely proud of what I have made in my backyard. This is all thanks to you, your channel and its stellar content! Mate, your an absolute legend, you need to be nominated as Australian of the year. Thank you!.. I couldn't have done it without your channel. Sincerely, Kevin :)
After a couple of months of delay, the guys are coming back to finish up my pond build, can’t barely wait 😀. Your videos have always been a great source of information and educational materials Kev 👌👌👌. Thanks so much.
@@Ozponds thanks heaps mate 👌. The guys will be ordering the pump from your Amazon link too. Do you have any affiliation with anyone for pond liner too Kev?
Ummm not for the liner. I buy mine from all over the place. More often than not “rock around the block” gives the best price on Firestone epdm. If you google: pond liner rock around the block, they will pop up 👍
Excellent video and great advice same as your others. I'm a fan of the jeboa pumps my first XTP 8000 has finally stopped working after 6+ years . I've replaced with a OEP 12000 very pleased with output considering my pond is 5ft deep & filters are 2 metres higher due to garden being on a hill I'm still running an XTP 8000 running my 2 bakki showers while I purchase another OEP 12000 to power showers and a bog filter. Eventually . Living in UK have to wait longer for them to be delivered from China .but much cheaper than buying from UK supplier .look forward to seeing your new project running
I used 2 of these pumps in my pond 1 was a jebao 7000 and a 4000 the 4000 wire broke near the pump i wasnt happy to solder it they lasted 8 years in my pond and 2 in my reef tank the 7000 is still going good choice
Sorry for commenting on all of your videos today... but with a dc pump, you can add an appropriate pwm to control the speed of the motor. Good way to regulate flow without using valves 👍
you really do make beautiful ponds.... I want to have one, but I will have to break bank a bit, I want to have a koi pond, with a small as possible filter footprint. Unfortunatelly, bog filter demand the sort of space that I won't have... but lovely videos! I'll keep on coming back
Hi Kev, my pond suffered a major pump malfunction recently and that led to an algae bloom. I used the tips I learned from your channel to sort it all out quickly. I made a video about it on my homestead channel and gave you a shout out. I'll post a link to it, if that's alright with you? Either way, thanks for all the pond knowledge you're sharing.
It is good stuff. It’s funny almost every time I dig a pond I need more soil. The only time I had excess was in the courtyard. It just gets used up in the landscape.
Hi Kev, Learning so much from your videos. Thank you! I have a small pond of 1000 litres. I experimented with a small 30 liter bog filter build with a few fish and it works ok. But def needs upsizing. I know you say the bigger the better for a bog filter. I have a 1000 liter IBC tank that I can utulize for a bog build. Would that cause any problems to have the bog as big as the pond itself?
another pond Kev! there is no stopping you - how many will you have now? and will you still be planning a few more once this one is done, or will that be all?
Hi Kev, great, helpful videos! I'm so glad I searched for DIY pond filtering and hitting your channel. I sort of inherited quite a large pond and I'm having a lot of fun with it (the dogs love it too😉). The pond has essentially stood still for the past 4-5 years with nothing but rain interacting with it. I'm planning on adding a bog filter once I've worked out the surrounding area. I'm a bit confused about pump calculations though. The head height, is that just the difference in water level height between the pond and the bog or is that the distance from where the pump intake is and where the water is discharged into the bog? Or is it something completely different even? And does the amount of water in the bog not create backpressure that should be factored in? Or is that just what the "volume x 6" is for? And what if I need too much flow for one reasonably prized pump, can I just add another pump? Cheers
“Head height” is pretty much all the factors you mentioned combined. Yes if the bog needs more flow than one pump can achieve you can use multiple pumps.
hey bro! been binging all your vids, great info and your vids are calming :D how come you didnt put the bog at the start of the stream but rather have it just beside the pond seperated from the stream?
Not essential. It can help with keeping the water clear as it provides more surface area for bacteria. But if you have good filtration (surface area in your filter) you can still have clean, clear water 👍
wow, thank you for including the link to that pump you bought recently. I cannot believe the cost of the pumps from this brand. How is it that Aquascape and others can charge three times this. What am I missing. I haven't bought my pump yet but I'm just about to I looked at the Aquascape Aqua surge 5,000. Could you tell me how to determine which of these pumps from Jeboa would be an equivalent?
A few differences. The aquascape aqua surge pumps have a longer warranty, longer cord, aren’t low volt and aren’t variable speed. The jebao pumps you’ll need to keep the controller out of the weather and extend the cord yourself, that’s the only downside. There’s lots of other dc pumps coming to market now, so it’s only a matter of time till you can get a longer cord or extension and a weather proof controller. There is a 18000 & a 20000 model that will move around the same amount of water as the aquasurge 5000.
I understand your calculating bog filter size to the water pool and I get pump head height, but how does the volume and construction within the WHOLE bog filter factor in to these calculations? If head height is to the top of the tubing into the top of the bog filter, what of the extra tubing and water path through the substrate and its exit through any outlet?
I don’t really understand the question. Knowing roughly the volume of the bog helps determine how much water needs to flow up through the filter. I hope that makes sense.
@@Ozponds , I guess...it means that the extra volume of the filter must also be factored in when considering how big a flow rate one has to calculate when looking at pumps and GPH and head height. Not ever seeing a bog filter in use, the idea of considering water volume leaving a pump and traveling up to the filter inlet, there will be additional restrictions, between: substrate, how you construct your plumbing, plant material, and outlet size, as to what your outlet flow rate will be, so that if you look at, flow rate at the inlet tubing into your filter, there will be a significant drop in outlet flow leaving the bog filter, such that, calculating pumping needs simply on pond volume and filter volume, won't fully result in what one will see...i.e., more pumping in is going to be necessary, to see an outflow that you can anticipate. Excuse any "tone", I'm only writing out what I'm trying to picture in my head, how things work. There needs to be an X multiplier in figuring how one's pond filter flow out compares to the volume of water in to the filter, it won't ever be a 1:1 ratio. I guess that's what I've been driving at....👌
That’s why I just keep it simple. If I multiply the volume (when empty) by 6 and use that as my guide. Every time I do this I get great results. You can absolutely figure out all the variables if you wish that’s your choice. But then it’s going to be a different formula.
Hi Kev.. I used exactly the same pump, i'm having difficulty finding the right fitting to connect the head with the pipe, can you share what kind of fitting you used...
Hey Kev, I would like to buy the uni seals and piping at the same time as the pump you recommend here. Im going to get the 15000 one as well. Could you please tell me what some piping diameter this pump uses? I can’t find it one the Amazon description/reviews. Thanks!.
Great detailed information, thank you! I have no qualifications on how to pronounce Chinese names, but it's Jebao with the a before the o, so I'm pretty sure it's not pronounced like the snake, lol.
Great video Kev. Do you think having ponds has increased the number of adult mosquitoes in your yard? I'm sure fish and frogs eat lots of the larvae, but it seems like many would still survive and become adults.
Absolutely not. If anything it’s decreased. The ponds bring in heaps of extra bird life. The fish get a free feed on any larvae, the birds get any adults. And I just drink my wine 🍷

I’ve got no issue with that. You might like to just half fill it with rock and pebble, then you could keep a few fish and some plants in the “filter”.
