    My wandering jew plant was having a really hard time growing in soil, perhaps because I live in a really arid place. Anywho, I took a cutting and placed it in a single serving wine bottle (cute little thing) filled with water. It has been doing great ever since!

      I let branches grow old and they start bending downwards under its own weight. Trim secondary branches to let the main branch grow long without shadowing your aquarium too much. I grew Wandering Jew like mad from one tiny cutting, but grew it in dirt. I propagated it like mad, too. But the vines would always get very long, and the pant would die at the base. Wonder it that happens when planted in water. I'll try it.

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад

      EWKification I never let it grow long....trimming grown ends forces brunching. With many branches the plant became bushy and gives you option to trim it into desirable shape.
      I deem the plant has natural limits for how long the stem can grow...plants grown potted in soil generally seems to be stronger.

      Winogradsky column is a cool tool for microbiology.
      I have interest in larger organisms and do some experiments trying to build sealed aquarium ecosystems. So far I get semi-sealed ecosystem with seed shrimps and snails. It seems that adding larger organisms such as fish would require building larger aquarium. I am planing to share results of my experiments on this topic in a couple months or so.

    • @4me
      @4me  7 лет назад +1

      No Brenda. I've seen this plant, but decided to leave it for later. I noticed that leaves of plants with different than green color often cause of discoloration in water once they submerged. Aquaponics is cool and many plants seems to grow rather well with roots in water, but I am looking for land plants that can grow underwater ;) seems more fun to me. By the way, I tried Wandering Jew to grow underwater too. On my first try leaves that were underwater get pale and water gets darker too. I stopped this experiment for now - have other priorities to take care urgently and need make room and more nurseries for them ;)

      Yes - though, I it is not a problem at all - I make fish food flakes with snails as additional ingredient ;) Here is a video for details: ruclips.net/video/186RslKYkJY/видео.html
      All species are subject of population density rules. Bladder snails are not exempt from that rules. They are actually very good example of such rules that every one can observe! I am working on a video to show it ;)
      The population of snails goes up and down all the time. It is self regulated by available food, space, oxygen and so on.

      I don't change water in my aquariums since 2016 - no issues. I add dechlorinated water as necessary about once a month or so to keep roots of land plants in water.
      No insects in my apartment, except those that I keep in terrariums for feeding my guppies, Endlers and pets that I plan to keep.

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you very much!
      All aquariums with fast growing moss go through the stage of "tons of moss" - I have to trim the moss off to make swimming space for fish.
      Though, if you mean tons of different types of mosses in one aquarium then no. I have 2-3 types of mosses/ plants in most of my aquariums. It's hard to fit more in my small aquariums ;) though, it would be nice and more beneficial for aquariums.

    I bought this plant after watching this video but I don’t have a cutting branch but a small one with its stem and I wonder if it is bad to put its stem inside water because I don’t have option to cut and get a branch because it is very little

    • @4me
      @4me  4 года назад +1

      Thank you for the question!
      Generally I prefer strong plants.
      Nevertheless, there are two possible ways to go. You can wait for the plant to grow large enough to make a cutting (with good care it grows very fast) or put the stem as it is with roots or without them in the water. Either way make sure to have 3 or better more leaves and wash the dirt of the roots thoroughly (if it comes with roots). The plant should be fine either way you go with it.

      @@4me Thanks for your reply! It has 2 leaves and a leave which is about to grow and looks like tulip.
      Most probably mine is not grown from seed but from a little cutting and I thought it is grown from seed but when I investigate it looks like it is a cutting. I put it inside aquarium but stem is just touching the water from the end of it and 4 roots are inside water some of them has root parts above the water. I cleaned them thoroughly some traces of dirt is still on the roots. I thought it would be better to grow it in the water to make the adaptation easier, I hope I will succeed.

      Suman Khadgi not in my settings. Every time I tried submerged underwater leaves get discoloration and die shortly.

    Is this water special?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 лет назад +1

      I use dechlorinated tap water in all my aquariums. There is nothing special about it. Check this video for details: ruclips.net/video/8ItBA19CrtQ/видео.html
      Though, if you asking about color...check this video for details about background: ruclips.net/video/OcL-9Z8-1Uk/видео.html

    It looks like it is growing slow, I had one and it gained 30 cm in 5 months

    • @4me
      @4me  3 года назад

      The plant growth faster in soil than in water for more nutrition is available in soil. Though 30 cm in 5 months is as fast as it is about growth for plant growing with roots in water. Check out ending of my recent follow up video: ruclips.net/video/W67BimgimXk/видео.html

    I've tried rooting with tap water. But after a few days, the stem only rotted. Did you add anything to the water?

    • @4me
      @4me  7 лет назад +1

      I don't add anything to the water. Use dechlorinated water.

    • @meinardv3412

      Michael Langerman thanks! Will try it out again.

    • @4me
      @4me  7 лет назад +1

      You may need to cut off the rotten part. Also, it would be better to use water from an aquarium or place the stem in aquarium (water in aquarium is full of nutrition for plants ;)

      I did it to check if it would increase growing of secondary roots - it did not.

    what is the light demand of this plant?

    • @4me
      @4me  5 лет назад

      I keep my aquariums with fish next to the window but away from direct sunlight. You can see it at the beginning of this video: ruclips.net/video/eKDWgUO4VsM/видео.html

      Plants are as people - everyone is different...may be your plant needs more time. Just keep it in water as long as it is alive, try to change location - move it closer to light or other way.

      i just got a tiny cutting of a wandering jew plant and i had it in a small glass baby food jar for about 2 weeks and it developed lovely long white roots , i put it in some potting soil and it seems to be doing wonderful. i did seem to dry out a part of one leaf, but that was my mistake because i left it outside for a day (because i intended to have it grow outside for a while until i realized though research from today that direct sunlight is actually bad for them ) i was actually looking for a way to get the plant to look more voluminous and luscious and i found out through this video that it basically grows new branches on its own.
