Shadow of the Colossus - Killing Malus after death

  • Note: I changed the title from 'Climbing Malus after death' to 'Killing Malus after death' - more appropriate I think.
    Here I take the camera to Malus, kill it then return the camera to Wander. Then I turn off the rain and dark clouds so you can see Malus in the daylight... however the storm is still active!
    You'll notice Wander and Agro are standing on a stretched out save stone at the beginning, this will be explained in a later video.
    I jump up (not climb) onto the colossus and kill it - normally this would crash the game but in this video it doesn't happen?
    In any case, hope you enjoy it ; )

    Climbing on dead Malus and seeing all the Colossi light beams off in the distance gave me the heebie jeebies. Something so wrong about it all, yet still SO interesting and fun to watch. Thanks for the amazing content as always Nomad!

      I like to think that lord emon and his tribe built him in this position specifically so he can see every colossus die as a warning that someone is coming to end them all and after the 15th colossus, malus can only ready himself, for his end is coming by a mere human

    I've always wondered about this. In the credits when we see the dead colossi returning to nature, it would be extremely eerie and sad to ride through that lifeless land.

      I believe the colossi are already returned to nature if you ever revisit any of the corpses

      If you go back to a colossus you already defeated, you will see their bodies forming to the earth. I noticed it on maybe my 3rd or so playthrough, I saw #2s remains while I was traveling to a later one and it prompted me to revisit all of their Graves. It's so interesting to look at, especially since there aren't really any other reasons to revisit their areas. (You can pray and enter "renessance mode", a battle mode with an old timey film filter on top)

    In this original opening cut scene for Malus, I like the way the lightning illuminates the front of Malus. In the PS4 remake we just see lightning in the background & some flashes of light going through some of the clouds, but the front of Malus does not light up. While there is no denying that the PS4 remake was/is awesome, there are still some nice little touches from the original that didn't carry over, this being one of them.

    • @Shmandalf

      Yeah, the original was lightning in a bottle and I'm not certain we'll see anything like it again :(

      @@Shmandalf Yeah I'm aware of the "Beyond The Forbidden Lands" project & while I'm excited, I'm not sure how a lot of people are going to play it as it requires (as far as I know) a physical copy of the PS2 game & most computers sold now don't have a disc drive (again as far as I know). What I'm really hoping is that for the 20th anniversary of the game in 2025, Bluepoint Games will release a Definitive Edition of the game that will put back in some or all the missing colossi.

    Given Malus' location, and also considering its ability to fire these flame bombs from its hands, and also taking into account its static nature by design, it may be possible that Malus' duty was to defend the forbidden lands from foreigner/enemy ships coming from the sea. I am pretty sure the 'cursed lands' had to be reachable in some ways by sea ( just think about the gorgeous, De Chirico inspired, expanded artwork with the ico and sotc cover arts)

    • @reddemon6668
      @reddemon6668 Месяц назад +3

      I Know this is late but I hope you don’t mind. I don’t think that logic works, his back is against the sea.
      The arena you’re in when you fight him also seems to be constructed like a battlefield, with trenches and shield walls set up. He’s facing the battlefield. These trenches and shield walls also seemed to have been made for humans as the opening on the walls allow for living beings of a human stature to see through it while the underground trenches seem to allow enough room for humans or a small cart to fit right through.
      The colossus also seems to be grounded and held in place by the shoes and tower structure in its lower half of the body.

    • @ethanpayne4116
      @ethanpayne4116 Месяц назад +1

      It's a nice theory, but I think in this world seafaring abilities are probably not nearly sufficient for an attack by sea to ever be an option. Rather the sea and the cliffs make for an impervious obstacle requiring that the final colossus need only worry about defending itself from attack from a single side

    What an awful sight. Here lies this exquisite being, this lone remaining sentinel of a forgotten era; powerful, beautiful, terrible, an imprisoned god forever imprisoned by shackles of stone, even in death.
    One by one, he watched his brethren be exterminated. What dread must he have felt, seeing those beams of light pierce the sky?
    And now he is, broken, gone... Like killing a beautiful, endangered crane and leaving its body, nothing taken, nothing gained, just pure, empty loss. It's madness.

    I always found Malice the most tragic of the Colosi. It is positioned in a purely defensive position. It's back to a cliff face. The landscape out front blasted bare, either out of frustration or previous attempts to approach it. I expect the latter.

    Seeing Malus die immediately after being roused without even being attacked, as if he were just smote by god, felt so tragic. It's as if Wander finally met a foe he could not defeat but his quest was nonetheless destined to succeed, so the powers that be simply removed Malus as an obstacle. Malus almost looks like he doesn't even understand what hit him.

    I thought you were actually going to climb dead Malus from feet to head. _Kinda bummed that wasn't it._ 😕
    But still cool to see him up close when he's down, I'm still confused on why the hell his legs are "petrified in place" and never bend or loosen up even when he dies.
    It's like Malus is actually just the torso part and the legs are simply decoration!
    _I wonder if, back when they were sealing Dormin, Lord Emon's ancestors also cast a spell to try and freeze Malus completely in place_ and make sure he never leaves the hardest to reach place in all the Forbidden Lands.

      There's a few points in this video (e.g. 2:20-2:40) where you can see that his legs did buckle when he died. He's just being propped up by the metal contraption around him (and possibly the fittings around his feet are preventing them from just sliding out from under his corpse).

    Hi Nomad, I remembered something recently which might interest you and other fans of shadow and ico.
    I have a very clear memory that back in the day when I bought ico, it came with a information booklet (as games did years ago) which had some lore on it. I don't know if its been preserved or anyone has made a video about this. its from the ps2 version in a physical box.
    I'm sure I remember some backstory that said when a child with horns is born the village is blighted with bad harvests and other ill omens and that once they reach 12 years old they are taken to the castle. that's all I can remember. Perhaps someone still has a copy of this booklet because it would be great for fans to see a video on it. Dunno if you might find it on a website these days, but I've never heard anyone talk about it. I'm from the UK so mine was not an original japanese copy.
