  • We are on the beach fishing with our own homemade chum rig. We have never seen this used for beach fishing before, and we are curious to see if this can give us an advantage while fishing. So using a medicine bottle we drilled holes and created a small chum pot to attract fish. You may be asking “ Is this a joke?” Just wait and see the power of the MEDICINE BOTTLE CHUM RIG.

Suggestion, get bunch different fish parts, blend them, then as a liquid put them in the freezer in ice cube trays. Use the fish ice cubs inside the bottle, they should dissolve every 3-5mns and sent should do the trick 👍

Try drilling larger but fewer holes. Rather than a lead weight, I use 1/2 X 1/2 Square or round solid bar steel cut to about 2 or 3 inches and place it inside the bottle with my homemade chum. Attach the bottom of the jar to your line leaving the screw top unobstructed.

Dude! Thanks for the idea! I made 3 and they were SLAYING it at the SC and FL beaches I used them at. As a test I always had one rod with just a high low rig and one with the Chum rig. Every day the Chum rigged rod out-performed the regular rig. Holding onto this one! Thanks again man!

Nice! Many years ago I used to take pieces of pantyhose and wrap fresh crushed mussels in it along with the sinker. It provided fresh chum and made the sinker less prone to snags when fishing around rocks. The small cloth bags that the bubble gum that looked like little gold nuggets came in works well too!

Ive done this same exact thing as my inlaws have lots of these empty containers. My best result is from catching fresh bait then ground it using a handcrank meat/sausage grinder. Fill the container then FREEZE it immediately. It allows for a slow release of the chum. This works much better than just putting chunks in there from my experiments. But both work well. Thanks for sharing.

  • @theheck5176

I found an old cylindrical film container from back in the 1980s. It's a little smaller than the medicine bottle and has a snap on lid. Perfect!
I'll try that with whatever bait leftovers I have, perhaps even a sprinkle of old orangy Gulp juice perhaps... ew!
    Thanks Skipper

In the UK we call these "swimfeeders" it's pretty much how we all fish and have done for decades. More so in freshwater you can buy them in tackle shops here. I use them on rivers all the time.👍

To save fish that you want to throw back from serious injury, you can also crush/bend the barb on the hook down. If you keep pressure on the line you won't lose any more than you'd lose normally and removing the hook is easier and does less damage.

Quick comment. Great idea with your chum container “bomb”. If you plan in advance and use a blender or salsa mincer with your fish pieces, you can add fish oil, sardines in the can, etc. to the mixture to really spruce things up. Then when you plan on using it on the beach you can fill the container 1/3 of the way with contain balls, 1/3 of the way with your slurry, and then top it off with the remaining 1/3 again with cotton. The cotton balls hold the scent for a very long time and since you’ve minced the pieces in the blender you don’t need to use quite as much in the container. I also add my favorite commercial scent at times (especially Pro-Cure in shrimp, clam, squid) which also prolongs the life of the scent “bomb”. Consider using the narrowest diameter container you can find to minimize the slowdown effect by the water as the rig descends on the cast. My favorite are the cheap tin cigar containers that hold one cigar at a time and have a screw-on top. Just my $.02. Hope this helps!

kind of a newbie error using big chunks of blood worms. i used to burn through a lot of blood worms until an old timer straightened me out. A 1/4 inch on the tip of the hook is plenty, just make sure one end is past the barb and then kind of hide the tip in the other end. actually catches more fish than using big chunks with less cost. same thing with shrimp...a dab will do ya!

I'm gonna make one just like it but to be thrown in on a light rope with a sinker, that way I can retrieve it by hand when I need. Might not bring fish right to the line but maybe it will still bring fish to the area. Benefit would be not having to cast it all the time.

That's a super cool DIY project. I wonder thought if it'd just get mangled by crabbies since the scent source is so close to the bottom? I'd totally use it though. Would be a great way to use old bait or even old bits of gulp bait that won't rig up anymore.

I am going to use this off the boat. I am thinking of make a hole in the top and bottom and running a surgical tube through. Then you can freeze them but still get a line through. Also adding some blood, from the butchery, to the mix. Should give off a nice scent trail as it thaws.

Yes it looks crazy but it works when you need a crummy bad. It’s work great from my kayak. I also make with hole on the top and bottom.
Remember you will fell the weight of it also.
