Hey, I have 27 years and I learned a few things!
Great interview, with my friend Melvin Murphy, aka Hard Hustle!
I met Melvin in December 2015 and he helped me after I had broke down, in a previous truck and wasn't able to fix it. I started off where he was leasing a truck and made enough money to get out of debt, save $300-$500 a week as I watched him pursue his dreams.
The information he gives out is always honest and right on point! I've never seen anyone that was so knowledgeable about so much from money management, to painting, and being able to hear things in a engine better then a mechanic. I once saw him tell someone what was wrong with a guys truck by listening to it over the phone.
Melvin doesn't like to see anyone paying extra money on things that he can help you with. I once found out that he has helped plenty of drivers change a alternator or starter to help them get back on the road for no charge.
We've been pretty much talking about 5 years almost every day and never miss talking to each other for over a week. I ask a lot of questions and he has given me plenty of knowledge and understanding.
Melvin won't just tell you something to be telling you, he will tell you what he knows to be facts!
More to come
God bless him!
Melvin Murphy Nice rig and good advice. Hope they listen.
I am a mechanic and i feel you about the mechanics. So many just show up and want to do nothing. Most of the work i do is from previous mechanics failure to do their job. Far to many mechanics go through the motions.
Sir! I'm looking forward to seeing you on the roads.
I could listen to him talk for days I'd love a mentor like him!
There is more to come!

I’m so glad you did this interview. Take the contracts the company gives you and go to your bank. Talk to the lending officer, they will be real with you. Why would a company lease a truck without them having the upper hand? It’s all common since.

Being business savvy is something you learn. In any industry no matter what you do. You can't be a boss with an employee mindset.
An employee mindset is exactly what you need to be a boss.
@@LinwoodPowell an employee mindset puts you in a perfect position to be used and abused for the benefit of the company you are working for. They offer you a 401k and baseline healthcare. Maybe even a 3% increase to keep up with inflation. They make 10s of 1000s off you and give you pennies. Being ok with a company having you by the balls for anymore than 10 years and you're not actively working on being your own boss is beyond me. I'll never have that mindset and feel bad for anyone who does. Life ain't about working 40+ until retirement age then being to old to actually enjoy life. Own your own! This is why the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor.
@@VeniFettiVici Well said, my friend, I totally agree with you 👍👍

Excellent interview! Only thing I'd add is that just because your making great money as a company driver and see all the nice new equipment the company owns, don't assume you'll make money as an owner operator there. I've taken just wages and fuel out of load rates and it comes out negative. You'll scratch your head how these companies remain open seeing the rates when it's your truck.

I tell you this. It might have taken him this long but in todays world with all this technology we have and unlimited information available 24/7, it dont have to take 26 years . You can get thier in less then 5 years or sooner .
26 years ago you were pretty much on your own.
Now we have a huge help from every trucker in the community
I agree. Hes just proud to have his new truck and trailer and to really be able to make money with it.
Help from every trucker in the community is called a congested and consolidated marketplace. Or more competition and lower profit/pay, its well known trucker pay has been stagnant for like the last 40 years.
And like you said it ALL THIS Technology, trucking is a dying field of work, it will be automated in the next 10 years. I'd bet $50,000 on that right now and no of you would take me up on it because its true.
So, every truck driver should be learning new skills and pivoting into another career in the next 5-10 years.

I got tired of it around more than a decade ago. I started to have an old cellphone that I could get for free from friends that otherwise would have been scrapped. Took the money and bought a used Swiss watch every year (Breitling, Rolex etc.) and since I had many I didn't put much wear on them, all in great condition. Last year I started to sell them, all of them so far has increased in value and made me a sweet profit.
Watching these videos are saving me years of having to find out the hard way glad I can do my homework at 18 before I hit the road in 6 months 👌🏼
In 26 years I’m gonna have a fleet of automated trucks! But hats off to him for his hustle!
Whenever I tell people I am getting into trucking, they always ask me: Well what are you going to do with all those self driving trucks? I always ask them, when is the last time you saw a self driving truck on the road, actually hauling a loaded trailer? I could be wrong, but I highly doubt we will see that in our lifetime.
The technology is not solid enough. We're talking about 80k pounds going down a road. No time for glitches etc.. Only way I see it is maybe 15 years from now *with* a driver still in the seat watching
@@bricklayerlzdp9825 I just find it funny the general population thinks we are on the horizon of self driving rigs, lol. I think it was Elon Musk who came out several years ago and said that fully autonomous vehicles are just not possible with the quality of roads in the U.S.
@@lucasw2880 that's what I'm saying everything would need to be so perfect. Trucks don't drive in 1 road condition. 15+ years atleast till they can even get it to the point where a driver only has to watch it
@Abay Mine I have no doubt they are working on it. And of course they want it to happen. If you had a business you would want to keep your costs low so you could generate as much profit as possible. My point is I doubt we will see it in our lifetime. No technology can make an 80,000lb vehicle stop on a dime when some idiot pulls out in front of the truck and slams on their brakes. In the mean time, people still need their stuff...

Hey guys, been in this business for 44 years, owner and company driver. Don't think I'll own another truck again. Taking home 1300 to 1600 or more a week as a company driver pulling a tanker at 55 cent a mile, loaded and empty, plus 27 by the hour when on the clock for unloaded and getting loaded for as many hours it takes, as well as breakdown time. And 85 dollars for 10 break. It all adds up at the end of the week. There are good company jobs to be found in this business of trucking and having a good clean safety record. God bless you all.
I've never met a wealthy person that didn't have to sacrifice!
As long as they didn't come FROM GENERATIONAL WEALTH!!!!!!!!
I like it when someone talks honest about money. For example the cost of his truck and the payments. Most times people don’t want to share that info. Other great info as well. Thanks for a superb interview!
I always hear drivers shouting out numbers of how much per month on a note however I never hear all the details...ie term, money down, etc. Not every company has the same lease program either. You have to take the lease term, terms of lease, end of lease residual, year of truck, etc etc into account. Retail sale is never ever the same as lease and serves a different purpose. Just speaking from bank finance experience in bank industry now with lease and retail funding. Asian Mai, I'd like to hear all the details if the drivers will share. Always enjoy your show.

Start as a driver and jump into a lease operator for a year, build credit for your LLC and look into getting a used or new truck lease purchase outside of a mega carrier and go on your own as actual owner operator. By then you should have build business credit, learn some Ins and outs of the industry etc.

I bought my truck 2 years ago, I’d NEVER lease a truck! They’re ONLY going to allow you to make enough money to pay the truck payment! BUY YOUR OWN TRUCK!!!!!
This info was well needed. I have 6 yrs under my belt. A little Otr and the rest in the northeast with a concentration in the nyc boroughs. Owner op is definitely my next step now that I know more about the leasing hustle.
I hauled out of the rail yards in Massachusetts for five years as an owner operator. That was back in 2002 to 2007. I made some money but I got burned out.
I watch lot of videos but the people who want to come to trucking listen to this guy each and every word and learn what he want to say try to understand him,he got knowledge being an owner operator from last 4 years and in trucking business from 10 years I know what he is saying and everything is truth. Learn what you want to do in future it’s not like you work as a driver on dry van and suddenly you think of getting your own truck and start pulling Reefer/ flat bed. Make up your mind stick to your goal and accomplish it. I would like to say Hustle Hard is perfect name after being 26 years into industry and now owning Pete 389 2020.
Finally someone gets what I'm putting out there! No thank you SIR
I jumped too a lease 6 months in. Best decision I ever made. I went from $700 a week to $1,400. No more sweating while I slept because the company trucks didn't idle, saving money because I had a fridge and inverter in the lease truck. I went too a company that only had lease drivers. Honestly I don't want the hassle of owning a truck. I'm good with the bit more freedom and money in the lease. In the end its what makes you happy not what makes the next man happy✌️
