Hey Justin informative video will help used tractor buyers. Listen to your gut for advice it's always right. This Peter has redFlag issues, do not buy for any price.
17K - your anticipating doing the "in-frame" anyway so the compressor & the head bolts can be done @ same time (no longer downtime). Same with the air chambers - figure 2 weeks downtime for the whole job and you got a good running spare. ABS most likely a sensor - cosmetic work can be done at your leisure. I agree, the Volvo a sharper truck!
When buying something used, you never know what is wrong behind what you find wrong. I think you should look for something else and only come back to this truck if something better can not be found. Good luck with the purchase you make and I will see it when you do.
I wish I knew more about trucking after I retired from the army in 2003. That was back in the dark ages of the internet. If you were around then I would of pulled the trigger and went for it. Your videos are very informative about the life of a trucker.
Petes are nice trucks, but I'm not a fan of all the retro "steam gauges." Personally, I prefer Volvos (yeah, I know a lot of guys are gonna laugh at me for preferring Volvo over Pete) Freightliners are good trucks too, but the dealers don't always treat their buyers right after the sale if you have a problem with the truck.
I agree...this truck is pretty rough. Justin seems like he's got his shit together professionally. I would think he'd be looking at tractors with less than 500k.

Man I noticed that exhaust leak right away same with them bolts missing 😂 sounded like a early 2000s Ford F-150 that’s about too send the rods too the stratosphere 🤣😂 good luck buddy
Fix the check engine light issue, new door panel, fix the air leak issue, get the truck fully detailed, remove all the decals. And you would have a completely different truck on your hands. Probably would command a LOT more money as well.
@@emeyer6963 That actually would make a good flip if you could get it for cheap. Clean it up, fix all the issues and tack on another $10k and resell it.
I think the average person trying to sell a vehicle would have at least taken an hour to clean it up. The fact he didn't reflects how he must feel about the truck, he just didn't want to go near it. The fact people have worked on this Truck who had such a low standard as to not address the broken or missing bolts and resolve this properly on such an expensive part, say's a lot. Then the amateurish door handle repair. There is nothing to indicate quality work has been done to this truck. Nice looking on the outside, but totaled on the inside. I bet the matresses and interior will stink on a hot day. This is an in-frame and interior replacement job.
You're right. It's junk. No pride taken in this vehicle. Just a throw away now. Instead of taking the door panel off and fixing the handle, they took a saw to it. He'll go thru that truck and find a thousand different hack jobs like that. HARD PASS!
@@heinzkitzvelvet Yeah...I'd stay way far away from that Pete. If the guy couldn't bother with that very easy to fix air leak and never noticed bolts missing from the exhaust manifold...there could be all sorts of traps waiting for the unwary. Wow, my truck looks brand new compared to that, it’s 2016 579 Pete with MX13 Paccar with 600500 miles that I’m selling! It’s been babied and and clean. Well maintained and since we haul tankers, it got Dual air dryers with PTO pump. Just had the 9 round packing seals changed (no leaks).

Justin I don’t know anything about the actual trucks themselves I’m in the trucking business in the sense that I provide risk management and insurance services but that aside while I’m no mechanic that Peterbilt looks rough... I would steer or at 16.5 maybe it’s worth it....But if the truck itself looks the way it looks kind of a lack of pride of ownership and I would imagine the interior that engine is not gonna be well maintained
not a driver, not sure how i got here but i have to say you know your stuff, you drive the rig, repair the rig, your a straight shooter, good job my friend.

I've been looking at a lot of things this year, cars, trucks big and small, backhoes, tractors, and I'm seeing that "American made" is meaning lacking thereof and little to no luxury...
You should do a give away with your old Volvo. I’m an electrical engineer but always wanted to be a truck driver. Justin, keep looking! This truck is the RAM Tradesman of Pete 587's, very few options. What sticks out most is the lack of pride in ownership. Too much jury rigging to keep it on the road. It's going to need an in-frame plus head work to get that exhaust manifold fixed. Guaranteed those manifold bolts are snapped off in the head and they stacked gaskets to get it to seal. Air compressor, turbo work, air line work, door panel, a lot of cleaning, seats recovered.... It's a long and EXPENSIVE list!! Seeing how the truck was maintained, it would be a hard pass IMHO.... He was asking 30K originally??? LMFAO!!

I ‘m a woman owner operator along with my husband. And I was in my 2007 Kenworth W900 with an end dump trailer on 5/30/24 on hwy 93 outside of wickenburg AZ when another semi hit me head on. My truck burned to the ground in 18 mins and half the trailer burned. My truck was basically brand new. All in the last 9 months we rebuilt engine. In the last 2 months we replaced the turbo, AC compressor, clutch, new seat, All new tires on truck and trailer, abs on trailer, brakes on both truck and trailer and the list goes on. All gone. This truck was special because we were the only owners. No loans. Heavy duty truck most likely was one of the reasons I survived. Man that caused accident died on scene. Now we found a truck exactly like ours. Freshly rebuilt but not all the parts we replaced. And they are still asking $64,000 for a 2005 Kenworth W-900. We have to replace truck out of our own pocket because the other side is taking their time. I’m just grateful I’m alive. I’m hurt badly but I’m alive. I have to stay positive.
You know your stuff Mr.Just Truck'in 🚛🚚 .. Wow , Question.. Do you learn all the truck parts during the 2 & half of driving a truck and doing mechanical repairs when needed to upgrade parts .. This video was a learning experience of the item is worth the price for additional investment.. Job Well Done Mr Justin 👏
I am a Pete man through and through. Really did not like the look of that Truck, But for that sort of money you will be lucky to get anything better. Truth is if you are not looking to expand your fleet then stick with the Volvo, better the devil you know.
The missing bolts and 'patch-job' seal they did. That would be a pass on me. Not 'just' because the Bolts are missing (if that's all it was, you can easily get new ones). But that if a mechanic working on the truck considered that 'good enough', what else did they work on that you cant visually see that they considered 'good enough' ?
When buying a secondhand car I always look at the quality of tyre the owner has put on, ok not definitive, but many people can afford the monthly but just not the cost to maintain it. Goodyears and Bridgestones are a good sign.
my 2 cents is stick with the truck you have. you know the current status of everything and it is still getting the work done. plus it looks nice and seems to have a good amount of space.
I’m a mechanic and the tell tale sign of someone trying to unload a truck with serious issues is new paint, new tires and new coolant. If you are buying a truck, pull an oil sample(if the owner doesn’t let you, run away.). Check the coolant. If it’s been recently changed, it could be hiding a serious issue, like injector cups or worse yet! Another way guys try to screw private buyers is a thick coat of paint underneath the truck. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen guys come in with a beautiful truck cosmetically, but everything else wasn’t checked thoroughly. I have a freight liner Columbia sitting in the shop right now with a bad cam, bad followers, bad injectors and honestly the guy can’t afford it, but he should do rods and mains as well. Guy bought this truck, which in his defense is clean, but the previous owner knew he could sucker the right guy into buying this truck. Took it out for the maiden voyage and it fell right on its face, no engine lights. He bought it for $15,000, and I just ordered $15,000 worth of parts just to get him on the road. First red flag after popping the hood was fuelant, not coolant in his pressure tank. This truck had bad injector cups all around and especially in #3&5. Dumped fuel into the coolant passages and hence why you now have fuelant in your radiator. Another red flag to me as a mechanic is a truck sitting for an extended period of time and gets bought at a discount price. DONT BUY TRUCKS THAT HAVE SAT. TRUST ME. THey will nickel and dime you to death.
I drive a 2020 Volvo VNL760. It’s a decent truck for what it is. Don’t care for automatic tho. On trucks like this Pete, the secondary usually starts climbing after primary reaches around 90psi
Door card / door mechanics, brake pots, compressor, air leak and vgt not too bad. The missing bolts on the manifold probably broken in the block, that would be my biggest concern. In general, the condition tells me the mechanic working on that truck was not very good or the owner doesn't take care of his truck. I would probably pass on this one
I'm a flooring installer and unfortunately do to back injury (s) I'm forced to start a new career at 50 years young.. thinking on buying a truck and becoming a driver.. what's your opinion? First video of yours I've watched and subbed!
I bought a brand new 2005 Volvo 780 with Cummins ISX in May 04. I still drive it today 48 states and NEVER in 1.8 million miles has been towed or needed mobile mechanic. At 1.1 mil I had oil leaks ($2,000 estimate to fix) and I decided to spend $10K for a complete inframe, because I didn't know anybody with more miles on similar engine back then. My friend bought a similar truck 3 months after I got mine and just sold his at over 1.8 mil with no work done on engine !!! I know 3 other Volvo with ISX 06-07 with 1.3-1.5 million miles with no major issues..most comfortable trucks out there.
I love how you line up the cigarette lighter plug symbol. OCD much? The best part is I was mentally thinking it was out of whack and you fixed it as I was thinking it. I have the same affliction. Love you channel. Thanks for taking the time to do what you do.
We have one at work, always problems..The slightest cold you have to jump start even with new or recent batteries, the rear leaf springs rust stress frame bad. I would pass, cant turn for world.
Great video Justin! After seeing this I would definitely stay with the Volvo. In New Zealand here I ran Scania's, and I'm not really a fan of mixing up your fleet. It's better to keep them in the same brand, it just looks better and much easier to maintain because the parts are all matching.
I was wondering where you were going when you said about 20 miles up Interstate 22. I don't know where that guy's house is, exactly, but I know where that is. I grew up about 10 miles from that intersection at the end of the video. Some background information for you. That county was coal mining country. Mines are mostly shut down, now. Lots of logging, still. There are all kinds of people around Walker County that know how to work on diesel engines. There are also lots of people in that county that dog out their equipment and repair it just enough to keep it running. That look like a typical Walker County repair. I don't know the person who was selling the truck, but if it is like other equipment from that county, you want to walk away from that sale.
I heard some rocker arm knocking. And here in Canada, we don't touch a Schnieder, they are very poorly maintained. You can see that in the bolts missing, that is evidence of the level of care.
BRING A WELDERS MIRROR AND A FLASHLIGHT WHEN INSPECTING A TRUCK. You should keep both in your tool box that you keep under the bunk in any truck you drive. A few specific tools in a small box are just as important as your fuel card. Well in my opinion at least. Could be the difference between turning a profit and going in the whole on any given week. Also check drive line slack, pick up on the slack adjusters to check the s-cam bushings, check for slack i the steer axle pins/bushings and bearings, clutch play/adjustment (no more than 2" of pedal take up) check the cab/hood bushings, check the levels of the trans, steer hubs and both diffs. ask if they have had any spindel work done "re-worked or replaced'' (all 6). You may have to borrow a tool, i built my own. supper simple if you or a buddy can weld, but be sure to check the slack in the 5th wheels. none of the things are deal breakers by themselves **except for low oil in the trans** but can turn a great deal into the worst if you buy a $20K and have to spend another $20k on repairs/maintenance before you ever get to leave your home state. idea being, you want to make a few shake down runs locally before you deadhead 250 miles to pick up that good load headed out west somewhere. Not Cali, because why would you ever do that unless your dedicated, but any 3 day run where a simple road call turns into a week long stay at the motel 8, just down from the closest dealership whos on day 3 and can't find the problem or is waiting on a part from canada!
All the Pete's problem's is why it hasn't sold already , don't let your desire for a Pete fog your mind . You'll find the right truck at the right price in due time .
Thankyou very much i just bought a 2010 volvo 1.2 miles Truck & trailer now i kniw that the engine will need some work done it's okay do Thanks for your information 👍🙂
How can you look at that door every day and not get a replacement panel from a scrap yard? That's just on the surface. What about the repairs that have been done that you can't see?? Every repair appears to have been done as cheaply as possible, with no follow-up to have the job completed properly. $30k to $22k to $20k and is now down to asking $16.5k...that's a price reduction of 45%! >>>RED ALERT
I drove a 660 Volvo 4 over a year, I drove a kw 680 for about a year & 1/2, so I can say I have experience with both. The KW is a much better quality vehicle than the Volvo. You ride a Volvo so your gonna be a lil partial when it comes down 2 it. I drive a freightliner classic so I'm definitely not gonna compare my ride 2 either 1 of those. It's about the care that was given 2 the that peticular truck. I have friends who have trucks that are 20 yrs old but they are the only owner of that truck & I promise you it still rides great. Didn’t know you were running 10:speed now. I’m a big Pete KW guy but you have a sweet truck now and already been through it. Pray on it
I drive a volvo just like that one and love it. The thing never gives me trouble and she just runs and runs. Really a great truck.
On peterbilt it always builds air in the primary first and once primaries full it starts secondary buildup
same way with kw
Sir, to determine the value of this Peterbilt, I will need to know exactly how much fuel it has in the tanks, lol
Petes are nice trucks, but I'm not a fan of all the retro "steam gauges."
Personally, I prefer Volvos (yeah, I know a lot of guys are gonna laugh at me for preferring Volvo over Pete)
Freightliners are good trucks too, but the dealers don't always treat their buyers right after the sale if you have a problem with the truck.
Have you ever had a freightliner? Are they easy to work on? I’m thinking of one.
Volvo is the only way!! Smart people wouldn't laugh at you🙂
Good information. More important when buying a truck, find one that hasn't had a recent oil change and do an oil sample
Shade tree mechanics got a hold of it. Relying on that Peterbuilt emblem to sell it.
Peterbilt*
@@sharpshooterj.r9637 spell check there Jr
@@fredg8834 that's literally how the brand is spelt PETERBILT
Spell check didn’t let me spell it right. I should have been more clear
@@fredg8834 sorry that's on me 😂
I would walk away from this one. Much nicer cleaner trucks out there. Go with the 579 for the $5-10,000 more.
I agree...this truck is pretty rough. Justin seems like he's got his shit together professionally. I would think he'd be looking at tractors with less than 500k.
Enjoyed the video. I got a great education today in what to look for in buying a used truck. You are thorough in your assessment and inspection of the tractor. Thank you for the instructional class.
Keep the Rubber down & The Shiny side up brother! 👍🚛👷
Thank You Craige
Man I noticed that exhaust leak right away same with them bolts missing 😂 sounded like a early 2000s Ford F-150 that’s about too send the rods too the stratosphere 🤣😂 good luck buddy
Sounds like a 2021 chevy Silverado with the 6.2 about to throw blow up at around 5000 miles ..
I would bet the two bolts missing are broken off and they didn't want to fix it and just patch it up to get rid of it.just my opinion but I would pass
Agree - and it clearly shows the attitude of the owner that he would accept this 'repair'. Run, not walk away from this truck.
Yea for sure the rest of the truck was ruff to clearly it wasn't maintained correctly
@@oscarjonesxxx2893 you are correct. There is no way that is an acceptable fix.. Horrible work by any person who wants to call themselves a mechanic
Top notch film work. Very informative video.
Ive been stuck at home for the past 5 months with a severe back injury but almost clear..... and watching this... god i miss my job
Prayers for quick return 😎🙏🏽
Looks like a fleet truck that was slapped together to sell it.
Fix the check engine light issue, new door panel, fix the air leak issue, get the truck fully detailed, remove all the decals. And you would have a completely different truck on your hands. Probably would command a LOT more money as well.
@@lucasw2880 Agreed.Needs to be standing proud to get all the money out of it.
@@emeyer6963 That actually would make a good flip if you could get it for cheap. Clean it up, fix all the issues and tack on another $10k and resell it.
@@lucasw2880 Would have to get it cheap enough.
Smell like Feet and Ass for sure man!!
That being said, it did run nicely and manifold bolts are cheap. Probably a good deal for 12.
my dads first truck of his own was a 2015 Peterbilt 587, he loved it. bought his next one brand new. Hes peterbilt for life
I love the Volvo I learned on a 97 with 600hp it was easier to drive than the brand new freightliner.
@Hello D beck how are you doing?
Cant complain. Just trying to make it happen.
What are you up to.
@@lydiaanderson582 what are you doing .
Keep looking. Wishing you all the best.
Hi Justin, I’m a driver in the UK and no mechanic but my Detailing OCD was going into overdrive lol , I think you could do better , no rush keep looking have faith 😉👍🏻
🙏🏽agreed
Justin I don’t know anything about the actual trucks themselves I’m in the trucking business in the sense that I provide risk management and insurance services but that aside while I’m no mechanic that Peterbilt looks rough... I would steer or at 16.5 maybe it’s worth it....But if the truck itself looks the way it looks kind of a lack of pride of ownership and I would imagine the interior that engine is not gonna be well maintained
not a driver, not sure how i got here but i have to say you know your stuff, you drive the rig, repair the rig, your a straight shooter, good job my friend.
justin just stick with the volvo far better truck i think your gut is telling you no and your just trying to convince yourself other wise. Dont go against your gut .
Best video, I watch all these guys. Much respect to all yall. Keep grinding. Much love
Wow, I learned a lot. I have a semi I bought 18 mos ago that I will be renting to another trucking company. Thanks a lot for this. I just subbed.
Thanks for doing that pre-trip. Helps remind me of what needs checked. Granted knowing how our trucks run, we tend to get lazy with it after awhile
check the air dryer bracket. Mine broke level with the bottom of the frame. Yes that was a ride from 70 mph to stop in 7 seconds.
Yowzers 😑🙏🏽
From $34k to $12k. It is good to have either the expertise or the right person when it is the time to buy the truck.
Why y’all youngins gotta be driving in the passing lane all the time?
VGT stands for variable geometry turbocharger, AKA variable-nozzle turbine.
Your check for crankcase pressure was perfect! Simple and effective. I really enjoyed watching this video, and learned some things too. I’ll look for more of your work. Thank you.
I’ve been talking to my wife about starting my own trucking company, that way all of my kids could work at the company. Also I wanted something to leave for my kids! Thanks for your positive attitude!
Love your informative video. Great job. I felt like I was in a classroom. I’m planning on buying a truck. This helps bro. Thanks again
LMFAO!!
Shade trees should have more pride than that...too many short cuts.
Which details clearly the type of ownership....Run.

Dirty truck
Mucho loco tu
Pretty big red flag with the missing bolts. Looks likely bigger issues lie deeper - maybe patched together to get rid of.
Great video ! To me when I look at something and find something that I felt they knew and didn’t disclose I go on to something else.
That trucks worn out. You won’t like 10 speed with heavy loads in mountains.
Appreciate the advice...51 year old teacher ready to leave teaching for the road...all the advice helps!
Good luck out there!
I am a Pete man through and through. Really did not like the look of that Truck, But for that sort of money you will be lucky to get anything better. Truth is if you are not looking to expand your fleet then stick with the Volvo, better the devil you know.
Justin in my opinion that truck is worn out. I would keep looking.
That was a base model 579. People think just cuz it's a Pete it's top notch & pay more than they should
The missing bolts and 'patch-job' seal they did.
I just put Primewells on my 2004 Accord. Goodyears where a bit pricey.
my 2 cents is stick with the truck you have. you know the current status of everything and it is still getting the work done. plus it looks nice and seems to have a good amount of space.
Good video , been driving OTR for 5 months. Just turned 22 and want to buy my own truck in the future.
Stay with it
What do you think your going to get
I’m a mechanic and the tell tale sign of someone trying to unload a truck with serious issues is new paint, new tires and new coolant.
This is always why I inspect repair work done by shops on my semi if I can. The two bolts missing is ridiculous.
Peterbilt builds to 100 psi and then the bypass fills the sec air. Love your videos keep up the good work bro
I am gladened that you were able to get a new truck but sad to see another owner operator come off the roads.
I drive a 2020 Volvo VNL760. It’s a decent truck for what it is. Don’t care for automatic tho.
On trucks like this Pete, the secondary usually starts climbing after primary reaches around 90psi
Luckily you went to see it in person, truth is revealed
Interior on Pete sucked. You could dump $ into upgrading it. But why.
I love how you line up the cigarette lighter plug symbol. OCD much? The best part is I was mentally thinking it was out of whack and you fixed it as I was thinking it. I have the same affliction. Love you channel. Thanks for taking the time to do what you do.
Ohh mannn I haven’t watched your videos a little over 6 months. A lot changed and a lot of more subscribers and viewers 🤙🏿💪🏿👏🏾🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
😎🙏🏽
Stick with the Volvo for now J, it’s a good looking reliable truck and it’s making you money....best of luck brother👍
One of the best informative videos I have ever seen. Keep up the good work.
Volvo does a good job. Driver comfort is great. I drove something from all the big manufacturers and Volvo wins for me.
Great info bud thank You 🙏🏽
If it was a Schneider truck i would run away from it i think if you want a Peterbilt you can find a nicer one
All the Pete's problem's is why it hasn't sold already , don't let your desire for a Pete fog your mind . You'll find the right truck at the right price in due time .
Thankyou very much i just bought a 2010 volvo 1.2 miles
Truck & trailer now i kniw that the engine will need some work done it's okay do
Thanks for your information 👍🙂
How can you look at that door every day and not get a replacement panel from a scrap yard? That's just on the surface. What about the repairs that have been done that you can't see??
Every repair appears to have been done as cheaply as possible, with no follow-up to have the job completed properly.
$30k to $22k to $20k and is now down to asking $16.5k...that's a price reduction of 45%!
>>>RED ALERT
Not a trucker but enjoyed watching. Thanks for posting
Thanks for showing us potential new truck drivers how to fo it.
Dude is knowledgeable and thorough.. appreciate the video as a new trucker

Man i just got my LLC and have been looking to buy my first truck.. This information from your video is awesome!!! Thank youuuu
Good luck man
I drove a 660 Volvo 4 over a year, I drove a kw 680 for about a year & 1/2, so I can say I have experience with both. It's a lot more involved of a process. I like your thought process but take it from someone who's been driving 4 quite a while, I by no means kno it all but I have a lot a experience wit driving different trucks over the years. Good luck my friend on the hunt 4 the right truck 2 meet your business needs 👍🏾
